Chevy / GMC Truck: No Cooling Fans & Engine Light On

  • In this video I have a look at 2007 Chevrolet Classic 5.3 that came in with the engine light on and a customer complaint of no cooling fans. I found a P0480 and P0481 stored in the PCM. This is a pretty common issue with the cooling fan relays on this year. Let's have a look. -Enjoy!

This fella is willing to travel to a junk yard to salvage parts for customers. In my part of the state, if it can't be ordered on a phone or online, then it doesn't get repaired at facility. Eric is one of a kind.

I screwed up removing a bad strut, and limped it to the tire shop around the corner, to have them finish the removal with a smoke wrench and put a new one in. About to leave, I said "oh wait, before I go, I need to grab the new strut out of the trunk and return it to PartsStore". The boss said "Oh, you already have a new strut? Lifetime warranty? You'll warranty it yourself with PartsStore, not through us? Yeah, just leave it - we'll put that one in for you." Never expected that!

It's actually a nice trait that GM sometimes has. Certain manufacturers absolutely love redesigning parts multiple times throughout a certain model's production years and makes finding the correct part a massive PITA. It was hilarious watching the parts guy try to figure out which part number you need for a late 90's Ford Ranger. It's not good when production year and engine option isn't enough, so you have to look for the manufacture date or serial number stamp in order to find the right part.

I love junk yards! When I was in college in the early 70’s my future wife was going to college out of state. When I went to visit her I would call (before cell phones) and let her know I was on my way. I was in Florida and she was in Alabama 7 hours away. I would show up at her place 10-12 hours later, and she was upset thinking that I had been in an accident. Driving through Georgia / Alabama in those days there were a lot of junkyards in the rural areas. I would spot one and end up walking the rows of cars forever. There were tons of Mopars, Chevys and Ford’s muscle cars and I would just lose track of time.

I've been using Boeshield T-9 for decades. I've never seen any in your shop but it's good stuff. There are reviews comparing it against Fluid Film . . . The T-9 is thinner coming out of the can so it penetrates and then dries fairly hard. Perfect for this application. It does not sag or drip when it gets hot. Ive used it on head bolts on the engine of my boat that I used in the ocean to prevent rust. It does not burn off either.

Excellent idea on this repair, going with a salvage/used part and wiring. Way better than going with a new box and then having to deal with repairing existing wire terminals (likely going to run out of wire length in that process) or going with a new wiring loom which would likely be delayed due to parts not in stock/COVID etc. Rather amazing those connections/interfaces find a way to oxidize themselves. That really makes one wonder if their new truck purchase wouldn't be better off spending a few days in treating all of the wiring interfaces with electrical grease just to keep the grim reaper snot from forming. Nice salvage yard, very organized unlike the many I have been in !

I don't know of any good junk yards like that in Southern California. There were a few back when i was young but I haven't seen one for 30 years. They pull the parts they think are good and send the cars to the port to be cut up and shipped to China. And they would have sold that fuse box for 1/2 the price of a new one. A simple plastic air filter housing cost me 82.00 for my 02 Jeep Wrangler at the "junk yard" in Wilmington. I might have found one cheaper eventually on Ebay but I was in a hurry.

I believe you're right about the after thought on the fan relay center. Looks like one of those what I call an "OOPS" addition. The truck was probably assembled and test driven only to find it was overheating and the A/C didn't work because the fans weren't operating. That relay add on was a quick fix to a design flaw rather than redesigning the original fuse/relay center. In my opinion that makes sense because why else would it not be incorporated with all the other fuses and relays. Nice repair and great dedication on taking the time to go to the scrap yard and save the customer money.
