- Is our food safe? A red alert question that Ramanjaneyulu, puts out to all of us. Hear him talk about the quality of food we are eating. Listen to the reasons we need to adapt to organic farming as a results of excessive use of chemical pesticides and horrifying facts and statistics, surrounding them. He alerts us to the damage we are doing to our ecological footprints. In his heart wrenching talk, Ramanjaneyulu, highlights the plight of farmers and the reasons they commit suicide and the many reasons that farmers and farming should not die.
“We are what we eat and plants give us what we feed.” He is waging a war against the use of pesticides in agricultural activities and has challenged the traditional methods of farming. Apart from running the Centre for Sustainable Agriculture as the Executive Director, he also runs a small outlet, Sahaja Ahaaram, which stocks pest-free products from farmers. After leaving his full-time government job, Ramanjaneyulu dedicated himself to the benefit of farmers and his campaign, ‘India for Safe Food’.

its been more than a year now, i am on the track of being mindful of my surrounding.
some of the ways i have already inculcated are:
- grow my veggies (whole winter i did not buy tomatoes from the market)
- minimizing my consumption so that we can reduce consumerism
- use fuller earth(mulltani mitti), gram flour(besan) to wash my body and hair. that means i dont buy soaps and shampoo
- dont use refined oil and cook in locally available oil like peanut oil, mustard oil or coconut oil
- make my own garam masala thus dont buy packaged masalas for cooking

Yes, 60% of the world's food is produced by small scale farmers according to the Grain Report. We can obviously, make educate them about natural methods of farming with prudent use of resources. It is possible. Our ancestors were very clever to include domestication help in our farming practices. The trouble started when the tractors and chemi fertilizers began penetrating. I live in the USA and coming from India let me tell you the milk doesn’t taste like milk at all. The vegetables doesn’t taste like how they were back in India. You cant understand seasonal vs non seasonal food coz Americans like everything across the year. Sad. Unfortunately food is an “industry” here. Health and growing healthy food is overlooked for profits and meeting the demand. Genetically modified (GM) produce has become so common. India is far better in terms of food production. Large part of Our farmers are innocent and not much educated or aware, and i believe the corporation have taken advantage of that. I am sure India will bounce back in implementing organic farming. I appreciate all your efforts Mr. Way to go. Its a long journey!

In the USA you can still get good milk, fruit and veggies, you need to find a local farmers near you that produces organic products. If you can't afford that, look for the small farmer that isn't certified organic but uses organic ways of doing things. ( The org. Certificate is expensive and time consuming). If this is too expensive, grow your own food. Plant fruit and nut trees, plant a vegetable garden, that will be the freshest food you can have.
You are right about Americans eating everything all year, and disregarding seasonal eating. I learned as a child not to eat everything. Definitely don't eat foods out of season.

Taj Mahal's real name is Tejomahalaya, it's a Hindu temple built by raja Jai Singh for Lord Siva but the Muslim man named shajahan stole it from him and built a mosque kind of building on top of it. Before commenting such an irresponsible comment one should do proper reading of how much of the budget is spent on space exploration, be it NASA or ISRO, and then compare it with the "military budget" Of the both countries, then you would not have made this conclusion.

The current agricultural practices based on mindless and excessive chemicalisation has to stop and your blessed space exploration will not help achieve it. North Indian farmers are wild and cunning. They're not even farmers more like landholders ie zamindars who are holding these protests. The farmers who work at their farms are basically labours mostly from Bihar and some from Punjab itself. They have no comparison with farmers from South or maybe other regions as well.

Go Andhra! I am a Tamilian but I did my graduation from Vizag and have a lot of fond memories of that place. Andhrites are really simple people but despite their simplicity, they speak their mind. Vizag was, and still is, I'm sure, one of the safest places for women. I remember being out alone in the city late in the night and not at all worried about my safety. Vizag has consistently been one of the toppers in the clean city surveys. I'm sure now Andhra will lead the way in making Indian crops and farms pesticide-free. There is so much Andhrites are doing right. Kudos and so so proud! Let's end the menace of pesticides and processed foods by eating regional, seasonal and local. Let's reduce the amount of plastic-packaged foods we consume. Let's reduce our carbon footprint. The effort needs to happen on an individual level. Whom to be blamed to the most is agriculturalist.. The reason is they are only doing many high breeding activities and give corps without any expectated vitamins and minerals.. Soil got spoiled.. Not all but few do this.. And become millioners.. Formers are different from Form owners..

I know that I'm going to get a lot of hate for this, but I have spent 17 minutes of watching this, so I am entitled to share my opinion on it.
This is not how you should do a TED presentation. This is how you talk to people in your friend-circle knowing that they share your opinion, your thoughts, your biases, know your preferences, conventions etc. In a TED presentation (or any presentation at a formal setting), you are supposed to come with a story, structure, arguments & findings, data points to back those arguments and findings, draw conclusions from them and suggest solutions if relevant. He had a story and message for sure, but little else. All I heard was mostly a rant, one particularly directed at an unclear villain, most likely the various governments involved.
There were many "facts" shared but mostly without any data points. Even the data points quoted didn't share any sources at all, and some data points were just very unclear and subjective, like the ones about farmers low income and the high farmers suicide. In the name of solutions, he gave couple of examples, but no explanations at all of how those solutions were achieved and why those solutions worked etc.
In the end I'd like to clarify that I am not questioning his intention or his knowledge, just the way he prepared and presented. It was very demoralizing, and one point I even started thinking that the only safe option for me is to just start growing my own food.

well, cancer increases but it all depend on one's karma. Some people who eat non veg and drink all their life die of natural causes than people who are vegetarians. Can you explain why?. it all depends on our karma. If our karma was to go out because of disease, we would go regardless of how healthy we are.

I salute this person with all my due respect and try to convey message to my village friends.
I watch this speech every year just to see if anything has changed in the few years since I first saw it. And I have to report.. nothing has changed for the better, or things have become worse in some areas. We could not even get the agricultural laws passed though anyone who has listened to both sides of the argument understand that they were favorable to everyone in the livelihood and/or business of agriculture, the environment and the GDP of the country. Politics, apathy and ignorance as usual stifles our thinking and action, until its too late. We have to let science lead the way and break these barriers. This is one area we cannot afford to delay action in far less not do anything
Those laws were just opposite of what he's saying he want to keep farming far from industrialization but those laws were opening market for big companies and they only care about their profits not about your health.
