- After looking through random pieces of trivia about the Pokémon franchise, I’ve realised a lot of facts about Pokémon are, more or less completely useless pieces of knowledge that won’t ever come up in your everyday life. Kind of like algebra. So I decided to share 20 of them!

If I may submit a fact of my own:
The move “Splash” is a mistranslation. The original Japanese name actually means “Hop”. This is why Hoppip is able to learn it as well as Magikarp.
It’s also why, in the earlier games, Splash is a Normal-type move instead of a Water-type move.

Another useless fact: In Finnish the word "johto" means two things. The first one is cord, but the second meaning for johto in Finnish is "continuation". Since johto is a continuation of kanto, i think it is kinda cool that this hidden easter egg exists. (Even though game freak probably didn't intend that.)

There *IS* one instance of an actual devolution in the anime: Gladion's Silvally being "devolved" into a Type: Null. Of course, it's really just Silvally getting the helmet slapped on to it, and it later "evolves" by breaking off the helmet, but as Type: Null is treated in-game as a separate "pre-evolution" that can actually use Eviolite, it probably counts as a "devolution".
In pokemon journeys in particular the dialga & Palkia arc pokemon actually did devolve because of dialga & palkia were fighting causing issues in the spacetime continuum
Eevee, Girafarig, and Ho-Oh all have palindromic names.

The reason Mew is listed after Mewtwo in the Pokédex is because Mew was never planned to be in the original games (Red and Green). Shigeki Morimoto programmed it into the games two weeks before game development was finished. Even Nintendo was initially unaware of Mew's existence in the games.

Maybe with the mewtwo number thing, Mewtwo was kept a secret and Mew wasn't discovered yet. So Mewtwo would be catalogued first what his whole "Imma get revenge on humanity" thing.
And because Mewtwo says he's a clone it implies Mew exists, but is yet undiscovered. So Mew gets spot 151 as a hypothetical.
The Brock = Kaiba one was a huge shock. I also found the protein name one cool.
As for the movie fact at the end I am not surprised at all. I remember being a kid and going to see the movie. Every pokemon-loving kid who had cards HAD TO GO as they advertised getting a card for going or something along those lines (Been ages so I don't recall specifics).

Uhh, no actually. The first Pokémon Movie ever released was : Pokémon: I Choose You. I was expecting this was the fact but never mind.
3:02 I think it's because Mew was snuck in a shortly before Red and Green launched in Japan. And with the fuss that came about with it, it resulted in some events being held where players can have a chance to have a Mew added to their copies of the games.
When I found out Brock is Kaiba I really did drop a load. 2 absolute childhood legends.

Late to this discussion but I believe Mew coming after Mewtwo is because although Mew was known to exist hence the DNA sample being used to create Mewtwo, the Pokemon simply wasn't actually discovered and seen (plus the whole memory wiping) until after Mewtwo was created and thereby being after in dex entry
For that Mew Vs. Mewtwo fact, it’s actually because (according to the manga for sure) that mew was undiscovered before mewtwo was created, and mewtwo was interacted with before mew got fully registered

Here's a fun speculation (Which happens to be quite true):-
The Pokédex numbers are given in the order of when Pokémon Master Red found and caught them. (In Gen 1)
So, it kinda does make sense for Mew to come after Mewtwo.
I've never seen Yugi-Oh but when I heard Brock's voice come from that face I almost burst out laughing.

Probably the azELF bit.
Today I learned that chatter lets you record audio outside of battle that becomes the chatots cry, and the volume of the audio affects the chance of confusion the move causes.
I wish I'd known that, imagine using chatot in a battle with your friends and then it just yells at you.
That could be the reason smeargle can't learn it, but it shouldn't really matter because all they'd need to change is smeargles cry, which they'd have had to do for chatot anyway so it must be possible
I think they stopped that cuz obviously someone taught their Chatot how to scream swear words.

Here are some more (mostly) useless Pokémon facts:
1. Despite being a genderless Pokémon, Cryogonal can learn attract. It always fails if used.
2. With only a whopping 1HP, Shedinja can learn Substitute.
3. Ekans and Arbok are Snake and Kobra spelled backwards.
4. Magmar's Japanese name is Boober. No joke.
5. Delibird's two abilities are Insomnia and Vital Spirit. Who needs sleep, amirite?
6. Lunala and Solgaleo's signature moves, Moongeist Beam and Sunsteel Strike, have a secondary effect that ignores abilities from preventing their moves from hitting. This is only applicable to Mimikyu's Disguise and both moves hit it Super Effective. Coincidence?
Actually, if a genderless pokemon learn attract, it can use it on other genderless pokemons it i'm not wrong. I tried with my mew
Shedinja can also learn Final Gambit, which is it's weakest move at a whopping 1 base damage.
Minior can also learn Attract, but I don't mind because it's super cute and if contests still existed I would use it in every one. Also nah, attract *always* fails when used by a genderless pokémon, regardless of the opponent's gender, @pixeon pkm.
I'm pretty sure Sunsteel strike and Moongeist beam (Who thought these are good names) penetrate all abilities. For example, if you use Sunsteel strike on someone with fur coat, it will do normal damage.
pixeon pkm You must be remembering wrong, attract /always/ fails when used on or by a genderless Pokemon.
