I only automate my calmeg and silica in 5 gl buckets(homegrower) weekly. Feed by top dressing and hand watering compost teas monday-friday. Neen seed meal tea on saturday to control gnats.

I would argue that automation allows one to be much more hands on the plants as so much time is saved with daily irrigation labour
