The game has a settable difficulty level. I am playing on hard the first time through and the combat can be quite difficult at times. You have to craft the best items you can to stand a chance, whether it is healing / recovery items, weapons and armor, and attack consumables like bombs, missiles, etc. But people who have been playing on easy report the combat is much less challenging. So really it's up to you if you want combat to be a challenge or not.
For sure. I was playing on Normal, and compared to the other Atelier games I’ve played, this one gave me the most trouble in terms of needing to spend time crafting better gear and items. But compared to “hard rpgs,” it’s not too difficult.
While I do have some minor gripes, Atelier Sophie 2 was an absolute delight to play and it should be played by many more people! Time stamps are in the description. Share the Atelier love with fellow fans and those you think would dig the series!

'Atelier' is not French. Many countries use this term, including Romania. It actually has Latin roots so every Latin country uses it.
Atelier IS french, the latin root is Fabrica or officina.
