Well, I have been listening a lot of metal and classical music and a lot of metal musicians have background and education in classical. Lots of other metal music enjoyers seem to like classical too. I would personally guess that it's the range of expression afforded and encouraged by genre. Also people have been mixing those together for long time. You can check out Children of Bodom video here in TH-cam from 18 years ago of two guitarists playing Vivaldis Summer from Four Seasons or Metallicas S&M where they play with orchestra. I would also like to argue that Metal is so expansive genre as there's huge amount of experimentation that is being done and has been done for decades and there's not as much of a burden to try to force others to some tradition which leads to new ground being broken more than in more established genres of music or others where some other restrictive elements may be present.

I feel like there is a difference in the way DOOM and Ultrakill express their "anger" through music. DOOM's music feels like violent, unstoppable rage. Like there is no rhyme or reason to it, they are just *angry*. Ultrakill, however, feels like righteous anger. Like someone who has been pushed into a corner for long enough, and they are finally shattering the restraints and paying back for everything they endured.
hey man idk if you've ever played doom but like, that's doomguy's whole thing lol, so the songs are probably pretty similar for basically the same reason, ain't nothing wrong with that
For Smiles from Juran, what she described: " the aftermath of doing something very wrong for the greater good, and grieving over it". A sacrifice. She just described a sacrifice. The name of Excalibur Umbra's quest, where that song plays.
Listening to "Extras" and realizing that there was only one vocalist who was doing both the pop and metal vocals was absolutely insane to me. Like, who even has that kind of range? (Well, Molly Daisy, apparently, but you know what I mean)
Another suggestion is Opeth. Though they've moved away from heavy vocals almost entirely now, Mikael Åkerfeldt is excellent both at harsh vocals and clean. Sonically the band ranges from a black metal sound in their earliest works through progressive metal, and their most recent stuff is closer to heavy rock than anything else.
Wow the energy of Hilary is awesome and I like every answer she gives to the "Do you like it?". She is honest but also tries to find what caught her attention. My favourite guest of the channel.
In my opinion, Bloodborne is when Fromsoft’s music department and the composers discovered the secret to the creating the absolute greatest music in video games.
"If Phantom of the Opera had an onlyfans" is something I never thought I'd hear, especially from an opera singer 😂 I also get the feeling she would've loved 'One-Winged Angel'.
God. As soon as “To Zanarakand” played I was immediately overwhelmed. This piece is the keystone piece for the whole series. Like this is the piece that all the other songs go back to. Because it’s about the loss of a people, but it’s also a love story. Between two people , between a team of found family, between that team and the world.
When the Sadness category came up my first thought was, "Well if it's Sadness, To Zanarkand has to be there, right?" And then it wasn't. I was a little disappointed. When it came up in Calm later, and she said it leans harder to sadness, I did feel a little vindicated, I won't lie. But it's a melancholic song, for sure. There's calm there, too, but not peace.
"It was was a lot of pain and grief, like an innocent person died senselessly" The way that's literally the inciting event for Bloodborne's story is insane. That's incredible.
Oh man, Pokke Village is probably my favorite video game song. Such a restful vibe that was honestly important to me during high school. Love that you covered that.
Lots of people probably did this already, but i wrote a song to go with the Pokke village theme (and Seliana too.) It's not up anywhere, but i'm gonna see if capcom wants it in time for Wilds. Themes like Pokke village deserves lyrics that come from the heart that also love every hunter who has played Monster Hunter.
Totally did not expect to hear Exceeding Love (Suikoden 3 opening). One of my all time favorite themes from a video game. It gives me chills every time. The language is fabricated but you feel what the characters are feeling, the passion and the drive to protect what matters. So wonderful to see it here.

Gherman the Last Hunter hit right in the feels. "It was was a lot of pain and grief, like an innocent person died senselessly" Yup, nailed it, that's quite the meaning of the hunter's dream and Gherman's role. Damn this music made me hurt
Love this series Marco, and Hilary was a great guest. I'd love to have heard her take on Lady Maria or Brinstar Depths. Thanks for the efforts and looking forward to seeing and hearing more.
I am going to sound like I am trying to be a hipster but I am not really: After having been "That weird metal head" for so many years, the one that love Babymetal and Maximum the hormone and Melt-bana band, and things all the way from the blackest black metal from the deepest garage in the most distant forest and the most heavy hitting Grindcore all the way to Jazz, classical and Game soundtracks, it is so fun to see other people realizing that there are some truly interesting stuff out there, and that it IS strange, but fun and nice.
I love these videos because they really explore the variety of music that comes from video games. My sister-in-law states that she hates all video game music and I've given up trying to explain things to her, so it's nice to see people willing to take the time to properly listen and think about it. If you want any recommendations, one of my favourite songs is 'The Decision' from Xenoblade Chronicles 2. It would be interesting to see how people react to this one.
Only two minutes in and I just NEEEED to comment that I am super happy you chose to listen to the Suikoden III intro. I have loved that song for years now and it goes under the radar so often because people obssess over Suikoden 1 and 2 so much that they overlook how amazing of a game and OST Suikoden III is. Thank you!
It’s always fun to watch the reactions when somebody who could be considered an expert in their field experiences something new related to that field, and Hillary has some of the best reactions so far! I hope she explores more game music on her own, because with the breathtaking expanse of options we have, there’s guaranteed to be something for everybody here! I don’t know if you take recommendations, but my father and I have a few songs you might enjoy if you aren’t already familiar with them: Wounded Warsong - Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill 4) Room of Angel - Mary Elizabeth McGlynn and Akira Yamaoka (SH4) Chou - Tsukiko Amano (Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly) The Battle for Everybody’s Souls - (Persona 3) Rivers in the Desert - (Persona 5) Theme of Lu Bu (Warriors Orochi Remix) - (Warriors Orochi series) Izanagi Cavern - (Okami) Reset - (Okami) Devils Never Cry - (Devil May Cry 3) The Viper - (DMC4) Devil Trigger - (DMC5) (from same game, also Bury the Light) A Toccata into Bloodsoaked Darkness - Michiru Yamane (Castlevania: Curse of Darkness) Balmung Appears then the Virus Bug - (.hack//) Hillian Suite - Christophe Heral (Beyond Good and Evil) Doom Upon All the World - Trevor Morris (Dragon Age: Inquisition) Battle with the Five - (Baldur’s Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal) The Glade - (Dust: An Elysian Tale)

Again, such a great guest! Hilary is super curious and open-minded about this! You definitely bring in super interesting people to share this music with! Their point of view and interpretation is super cool!
Seeing an opera singer break out the stank face when the metal hits hard was not something i expected. I love this woman. lol and I would have liked to see what she thought of the ending theme for FFX, as it takes "to zanarkand" to its epic and heart breaking conclusion. Do still love stuff like this, and I would love also to see this done for fan music, too. I listen to alot of pony fan music and the huge variety in styles and genres of music, combined with the level of talent on display i feel would lend itself nicely to something like this. but i feel both fan music and video game music really don't get the kind of love and respect they deserve outside their respective markets.
Okay, Hilary is awesome - I always love these reaction videos, but _man_ I love her takes and the perspective she approaches these songs from. That comment about her wondering how calm music might sound in what is usually such an objective-driven experience like videogames touches on an spect I definitely never really thought about in such concrete terms. I hope she knows how fun this was to watch! (You as well, of course) Very much appreciated!
The analysis of "to zanarkand" is great in my opinion because that piece is meant to be experienced two time. once at the start when you are introduced without context, with the main character narrating over "listen to my story" which does convey calm, and the second time around, when you have more knowledge of the world, and the key context that lets you know, you're walking to your death. it is both calm and sad.
Sup Marco. Love your videos. When she brought up Phantom of the Opera, it reminded me i don't think i mentioned it in past comments that the OG Phantom, the late, great Lon Chaney was my great uncle. That only fans comment had me in tears i was laughing so hard.
Both of the songs you picked for the Happy segment are incredibly nostalgic for me, those two games were incredibly foundational to my beginnings with video games. I teared up listening to them again, almost sang along with the Brawl theme.
it's awesome Hilary called out the Trent Reznor influence in the Doom soundtrack. Trent worked on Quake where he linked up with the people who would go on to develop Doom 3. He was brought on for the project, but eventually he left because of time/career restraints. Regardless, the creators remained NIN fans and the music shows it.
The "best" calm pieces I can think of are "Peaceful Moments" from The Witcher OST and "Calm at heart" & "A far and warm memory" from Scarlet Nexus. They are very different in mood, but induce calmness in me.
Not only were all of these songs amazing bangers, the guest was so into all of them and looked like she had so much fun was really exciting! Amazing video Marco!!!
Suikoden 3... you introduced me to a bunch of new music/ songs that I now will forever listen to, but that opening is AMAZING I don't know why but watching the remastered version of it (you can look it up) made me almost tear up. Thank you!
I feel like "God Shattering Star" from Fire Emblem: Three Houses would fit perfectly under the opera category, with "Funeral of Flowers" from the same game under Sad. I also think "Engage the Enemy" from Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition could go under sad or possibly even anger as well.
Going to try to use up all my good luck for the year and ask Marco if he can get an Opera Singer to react to Ironmouse doing Opera. She's a vtuber who planned to pursue a career as a coloratura soprano opera singer, but was diagnosed with common variable immunodeficiency. She sometimes struggles just to breathe, but still sings as often as she can because she loves it. I'm sure her fans could go into detail about how hard her life is. Much love to you, Marco, either way.~ th-cam.com/video/chXKCqMM3E4/w-d-xo.html
"Extras" was the first time in a long time i was offset by the song for quite a few listens. I usually go to a different mood when i listen to metal music, so going from this to basically pop was just messing up my brain. But then i realized the both parts are actually the same when it comes to the mood. Same message, same tone - just a completely different genre. And then i have listened to almost solely "Extras" for like a week, non stop. God bless Daisuke (and Molly). Edit: also, im not sure if "Extras" should be representing anger, but w/e.
Man i really like the Doom OST and i love how Mick Gordon does his stuff, every time i play a pvp game i put the Killer instinct Soundtrack in the background it makes me feel so badass
Ultrakill reminded me so much of Master Boot Record. Pretty sure may have covered at least one of their tracks in their extensive catalogue. Edit: Looked further and turns out KeyGen Church (the artist who contributed this track to the OST) is actually a side project of Master Boot Record explaining why thought was similar.
I was watching this video thinking how interesting it is watching opera singers analysing music from the perspective of understanding the emotional storytelling of a piece... And then you two directly commented on literally exactly that. 😂 Also coming to this as a fan from watching Guilty Gear OST reactions, I absolutely love that Queen was the first thing to come to mind with Bohemian Rhapsody in response to a Strive song.
@@MarcoMeatball thank you so much for the reply. I’m a lifelong gamer and classically trained vocalist so I adore the conversations. If there’s one really oddball suggestion I could make it’s some splatoon discussion, the music in those games is excellent
I would love to see her back for a round 2, but with some more varied music styles. I'm talking a mix of various songs from Undertale (get some classic 8- and 16-bit music in there) and Kill God from Silent Hill (music with very unorthodox tones and instruments).
Serious question. Why does the track, Days When My Mother Was There from the Persona 5 OST go so hard? I'd like to know the music theory behind it. It's an instrumental track, but every time I hear it, I get all up in my feelings.
If you want to see a similarly ridiculous tonal range like the one in "Extras" I'd definitely recommend finding the full version of "Kumo Desu Ga, Nani ka" because Aoi Yuki just goes absolutely nuts on that one
Just found out that they are performing Nightsong and Xaxas from WoW at the Gaming x Symphony (Danish National Symphony) in May, HOLY SHIT. And I'm gonna be there experiencing it live. Can't even believe my own luck. If any orchestra can pull off Nightsong properly it's them...
4:16 fun fact: NIN was a fan of Id Software and helped them with sound effects and music for the Quake games. Also, Doom 1 and 2 music had some bases on NIN, alongside Metallica and Pantera
I get goose bumps everytime i hear Smiles from Juran. I remember playing the sacrifice and just being overwhelmed by how well the story and music went together. I will never forget how I felt healing Umbra and just hearing Ballas talk about the tenno and how the music just melds it all together. Warframe will always be one of my favorite games for moments like this.
btw, while many of those songs come from actuall video game composers, "Tenebre Rosso Sangue" is from a project called Keygen Church by Vittorio D'Amore (or Victor Love) i think that was his first step into Video game music. But Keygen Church itselve is an incredible project with many songs. He has a second project, called "Master boot record" and while it is more techno heafty it is also something incredible uniqe.
The metal to opera/classical pipeline is very real (and the reverse). Mainly it's because a lot of metal artists borrow heavily from classical and operatic theory, stylings, and thematics.
Not sure if I can agree with To Zanarkand being placed as calm rather than sad. Like, in my mind it's always been THE sad song, kind of like careless whisper is used to instantly evoke romance. On another note, if you're looking for more calm songs to use in future videos, I'd like to recommend Valheims "A Place to Rest" which is very beautiful and very serene.
Amazing guest to review game music! I was pleasantly surprised when the Opening theme of Suikoden 3 was featured. I hope you can listen to the OSTs for the Suikoden series especially that the Suikoden 1 & 2 Remastered Versions will be coming out soon!
im so happy you included Pokke Village. That theme gives me so much nostalgia, so many good (and painful) memories of MHFU. Still play it every now and then, doing a no armor run of it currently
I still to this day find myself humming on pokke village theme, my first MH game was on the psp and oh man i got stuck and stopped playing, came back a few months or year later and got hooked. Did everything, i love that song and you playing it in this video gave me such strong goosebumps.
Hmm... the way you titled the sections here. It made me think what could be done for a seven deadly sins of music tracks. Doom track would already be an obvious Wrath.
Oh man I wish he had shown her "An End Once and For All" from Mass Effect 3 for 'Sad.' One of my all time favorite videogame pieces. It still makes me well up a little when I hear it.
The thing I always find cool about watching people listen to Smiles form Juran, they almost always "seek light" where they look for the brightest light source to look at, and the feeling of hope behind it shines so well
My jaw dropped when I saw you put suikoden 3's opening in here. Been a gamer for 20 years and it's still one of my favorite bits of gaming music ever, and the game that made me fall in love with pov based storytelling. Too bad you had to cut the best bits probably because copyright or something, anyone who's curious should ABSOLUTELY go check out the original song.
Man Smiles from Juran still gives me goose bumps. "--We had created monsters we couldn't control. We drugged them, tortured them, eviscerated them... we brutalized their minds, but it did not work. Until they came. And it was not their force of will, not their Void devilry, not their alien darkness... it was something else. It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly broken thing...and take away its pain."

to zanarkand was such a core memory for me from secondary school days it was so melancholic for my angsty teenage soul XD
I can't hear that opening piano without immediately getting goosebumps and chills
Im glad she recognises that music like metal aswell as opera is taking their sides of music to their extreme
You heard it here first people, these videos are all just a long con to get Uematsu to write an opera. Well-played Marco.
The funniest part is that Partitio actually has a montage with his ost in the game.
Pokke Village brought me back to my early teenage years man, late night psp sessions when i was supposed to be asleep, good times..
The "best" calm pieces I can think of are "Peaceful Moments" from The Witcher OST and "Calm at heart" & "A far and warm memory" from Scarlet Nexus. They are very different in mood, but induce calmness in me.
Listening to a piece you are blind too is a very cool idea
Not only were all of these songs amazing bangers, the guest was so into all of them and looked like she had so much fun was really exciting! Amazing video Marco!!!
Oh she's just delightful.
"Tenebre rosso sangue" is italian for "blood red darkness"
Suikoden 3... you introduced me to a bunch of new music/ songs that I now will forever listen to, but that opening is AMAZING I don't know why but watching the remastered version of it (you can look it up) made me almost tear up. Thank you!
I feel like "God Shattering Star" from Fire Emblem: Three Houses would fit perfectly under the opera category, with "Funeral of Flowers" from the same game under Sad. I also think "Engage the Enemy" from Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition could go under sad or possibly even anger as well.
Honestly for sad or anger in xenoblade 1, the theme that comes to mind for me is Unfinished business.
Much love to you, Marco, either way.~

That's not exactly his field with these collabs. She's not video game music. He's more likely to react to her by himself
Pokke Village gave me goosebumps. Beautiful sounding and so many memories attached to it. 🥰
Makes me tear up
Man i really like the Doom OST and i love how Mick Gordon does his stuff, every time i play a pvp game i put the Killer instinct Soundtrack in the background it makes me feel so badass
Killer Instinct 2013 has one of the best soundtracks ever, Mick Gordon deserves more praise
Also coming to this as a fan from watching Guilty Gear OST reactions, I absolutely love that Queen was the first thing to come to mind with Bohemian Rhapsody in response to a Strive song.
:) happy you enjoyed it
I really love these videos :) please don’t ever stop making them
Never will
@@MarcoMeatball thank you so much for the reply.
If "Days When My Mother Was There" hits so hard, you probably should check out the cover by J-Music Ensemble band, especially from their rehearsals.
@@kogorun I have!
Pokke Village just feels like home. I unironically listen to that track when I’m having trouble sleeping.
To Zanarkand is not calm for me, just because it always makes me suffer a lot every time I remember that scene. lol ToT
If you want to see a similarly ridiculous tonal range like the one in "Extras" I'd definitely recommend finding the full version of "Kumo Desu Ga, Nani ka" because Aoi Yuki just goes absolutely nuts on that one
Tenebre Rosso Sangue always gets good reactions
Just found out that they are performing Nightsong and Xaxas from WoW at the Gaming x Symphony (Danish National Symphony) in May,
HOLY SHIT. And I'm gonna be there experiencing it live. Can't even believe my own luck.
If any orchestra can pull off Nightsong properly it's them...
Gusty Garden Galaxy is so good man
4:16 fun fact: NIN was a fan of Id Software and helped them with sound effects and music for the Quake games.
Also, Doom 1 and 2 music had some bases on NIN, alongside Metallica and Pantera
it's so weird how music is so powerful in evoking emotions. why can we feel the sadness dripping from a pure instrumental piece?
Gusty Garden still gives me goosebumps to this day.
Gusty Garden Galaxy always leaves me with tears of joy.
I wanna gift Hilary the Guity Gear Strive soundtrack now 🤣
When she started talking about songs exploring styles, I was thinking "someone get this lady a copy of Drift"
All these years later and I still get chills every time I hear Gusty Garden theme. What a game Mario Galaxy is.
Amazing guest! So enthusiastic 🤩
Hearing you guys listen to To Zanarkand and Pokke Village was such a treat
I swear, looks like every opera worker he invites love metal, lol
The metal to opera/classical pipeline is very real (and the reverse). Mainly it's because a lot of metal artists borrow heavily from classical and operatic theory, stylings, and thematics.
Not sure if I can agree with To Zanarkand being placed as calm rather than sad. Like, in my mind it's always been THE sad song, kind of like careless whisper is used to instantly evoke romance.
On another note, if you're looking for more calm songs to use in future videos, I'd like to recommend Valheims "A Place to Rest" which is very beautiful and very serene.
I’ve always viewed To Zanarkand as nostalgic. It evokes the same feelings I get when listening to Nostalgic song/song of mana from Legend of Mana.
Amazing guest to review game music! I was pleasantly surprised when the Opening theme of Suikoden 3 was featured. I hope you can listen to the OSTs for the Suikoden series especially that the Suikoden 1 & 2 Remastered Versions will be coming out soon!
18:24 This and the music of older pokemon games, always bring a tranquil feeling inside me that I can't describe 🥲
music can mean so many things to every one, i feel like hearing someone explain what they hear from a song changes the aspect of music in general
Speaking of "primal screaming" in opera as you called it, Ar Tonelico series is one to take the cake
Mick Gordan is still the only artist I know that sells a game attached to his soundtracks
"Trying to explain Final Fantasy is complicated" as a Type Moon/Fate fan...I relate
Oh cool I didn’t know Ms Maisel was also an opera singer!
(Loved this episode btw Hilary was a great guest)
Huge compliment! Thank you! This was a lot of fun 😂😊
That ULTRAKILL track would be right at home either in any CASTLEVANIA game or a Manheim Steam Roller Halloween themed concert.
im so happy you included Pokke Village.
I'm so glad you showed her German, the First Hunter - it's so good and it cuts so deep every time
Oh man I wish he had shown her "An End Once and For All" from Mass Effect 3 for 'Sad.' One of my all time favorite videogame pieces. It still makes me well up a little when I hear it.
More. Just more of her honestly. She's a GREAT addition to the team ❤😊😊
Oh man Marco, REALLY loved the editing on this one, obviously I've been missing out
Man Smiles from Juran still gives me goose bumps.
