- José Rubio, an acclaimed baritone, has captivated audiences worldwide with performances at prestigious venues. He has made operatic debuts in Germany at the Berlin Staatsoper, Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie, and Vienna's Ronacher Theater, and is among the few Westerners to sing leading roles in contemporary Chinese Operas, gracing stages like the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing and Shanghai Grand Theater. His repertoire spans from classic roles like Don Giovanni and Figaro to contemporary pieces like "As One." Rubio has also showcased his talent in recitals at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, as well as performances with symphony orchestras globally. Future endeavors include world premieres, such as "Tres Minutos" with Music of Remembrance and a cantata based on "A Wolf Called Romeo," along with debuts at the Boise Philharmonic and Lincoln Center's Chinese New Year concert with Orchestra Now.

Please get these singers to react to NieR and NieR: Automata music!
City Ruins, Shadowlord, Amuesment Park, A beautiful Song, Weight of the World, BiPolar Nightmare! All tracks are an emotional experience
This is my comment from the full video : Marco, a good place to look for music that may answer the, is all video game music entertainment as opposed to art (definitions as were used in the discussion) would be inde games. For instance Toby fox made undertale because he wanted to and it could have flopped or been amazing but his music would still be in it and for it either way. Another is Stardew Valley, Eric did all the music and it could have gotten him nowhere but instead it is part of the revitalization of an entire genre of games. This is the proof in the pudding that art is there using the definitions as described. Also, as others have said, most of the great pieces of art that we think of now were commissions when they were completed. So, sometimes time may have more to do with it than purpose. More things to think on in your quest to promote the greatness that is the work, dedication, and skill of the video game composers.
"there's no such thing as bad music" Let me introduce you to the Resident Evil Director's Cut basement theme.
Just going and listening to that "song" is the hardest I've laughed in a long time, and the comments under the videos of it are pure gold. xD
You made me search for it and... man that was an experience. Thanks for that LMAO
Spider Man Pizza Theme is obviously the best OST i haver ever listened
dooooooooooooooctor coooooooonnnnnnnners isssssssssssss gonna kiiiiillll meeeeee...

Bitcruahed Funiculi Funicula my beloved
It is the best for PTSD i mean freaking jostling.
Lol
This dude asked thoughtful questions and made insightful observations, love it. The best guests on these segments are the ones willing to give notes and criticize while also trying to find the enjoyment in them, hope he can come back sometime!
I don't know how fluent Marco's Italian is, but I think that helps a lot with with his Spanish
Fluent :) and yes
I've got the biggest smile hearing Marco speaking Spanish, I'm Mexican and to hear him speak was amazing
One thing about the entertainment versus art discussion is that especially with video games I think since many people still think gaming is a hobby for children that it isn't something to be taken seriously. Heck, even with lots of successful streamers of all types, some still have the stereotype of a sweaty fat dude in the basement or some frat boy in the college common room skipping classes. Then there's the image some people have of opera and classical being mostly for the rich/elite to enjoy and that it's potentially boring to boot. Some people simply wouldn't even think the two world could connect in such a meaningful way which is way discussions like this are vital in showing the possibilities and what people are missing out on.
Very well said.
god i cant help but tear up every time i hear dearly beloved

¡No lo hablo nativo pero aún lo hablo!
No soy el único en verle, que bien! Ya Marco tiene una gran carisma.
Aguante MarcoAlbondiga.
Jose was really cool, loved his insights. He very much describes these musical soundscapes and motifs just like you.
The sad thing about Sonic Chronicles music is the music is based on previous Sonic music so basically you're listening to tracks you're familiar with but it's mangled and ran through a midi processor. The tracks the songs are based on are so good
21:00 - He nailed it. The game grows in difficulty the longer you stay in the area, that's why it steadily ramps up.
ah yes, the game on which you have to go fast has 10 minute songs in it lol
21:22
José (and you) are making some very interesting points here about the way we classify music and the inherit need to put labels on everything we interact with. I'd love to see more "anything goes" type of events that aren't strictly restricted to one kind of music genre. I bet smth like this would help people broaden their musical horizons by a lot if they gave it a chance. Almost no one exclusively likes ONE type of music and nothing else, we just gotta keep an open mind and venture out some more.
that conversation about entertainment vs art at 18:20 reminded me of Terry Cavanagh(VVVVV) and Justin Stander(Katana Zero), both of them originally made (extremely high quality) freeware games, but they were relatively unsuccessful until they realised that people were more interested in buying games that cost money and that those types of games have more reach
It's far more likely that paid games find an audience, because pricepoints not only set expectations, but also because monetizing a game via, say, steam involves things like licensing, program security, and publishing, which are all things that suggest professionalism
I think Jose is the best guest you've had on the channel so far, very thoughtful and interesting questions which led to a great discussion which makes me want to check out the full vod for more, great selection of tracks too!
honey cant come to bed yet new marcomeatball video dropped
"This is what you are" plays in my Orbiter on a loop. Gets you hype to get into the game.
I love how he had an almost _identical_ reaction as you to Zero. First time listeners to that song just get blown away every time.
Also, very interesting thought on how speakers lose something about the human voice. I viscerally want to disagree and say there's nothing wrong with having a recording or simply amplifying the volume, but I was _in_ an orchestra (I high school one, but still) so I've felt it myself. Not just the choir when, but the instruments, too, have an entirely different... _feeling_ if not necessarily a different sound when witnessed live.
My favourite rendition of dearly beloved is made by a fan, search "dearly departed". It turns the song really melancolic and sad by just changing a few things.
His point about not wanting to sing through a mic is valid in a sense, but I play in a symphony and it’s sad when we have a very intense section and we’re told to play piano because there’s a soloist in the choir. If they had a mic we could go hard and make the whole thing so much more epic. I love that you addressed this in this video.
I love this guy, very insightful, very thoughtful and he brings great points to be brought into the conversation, but on the entertainment vs. art discussion I feel like he might be correct in what might be the vast majority of the time, but he still has that "are video games really art" misconception. A lot of games are products meant to sell to everyone and make money, but there exists games which have a strong vision and message like Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice which was made to push the player away in some way and a ton of indie games weren't lead by the need to make money, but by a strong artistic vision, although they're obscure and weird itch io games and can't think of any memorable game soundtrack atm.
DEARLY BELOVED!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOW!!! One of my favorite pieces of music, I get teary-eyed when I hear it. Kingdom Hearts has some of my favorite scores ever. Yoko Shimomura is an amazing composer.
I love all the versions of dearly beloved. Awesome how they can modify a great piece.
Loved José's insight into the music! Would love to have him back!
I always love these discussions that you have with your guests. Thank you for sharing!
Jose was awesome!
Que increíble escuchar a Marco hablar en español, no saben como me gustaría que la comunidad hispana vea tus videos, así también dar a conocer el arte de la música en videojuegos en los hispanohablantes ya que hace falta aquí también.
Next time somebody dares you to bring up bad video game music, then show them the Basement theme from Resident Evil: Director's Cut.
Or the Crazy Bus main theme!
Remember, RE:DC still had the original soundtrack, they changed it in the "Dual Shock ver." which, AFAIK you can't even buy on the PlayStation Store.
So glad you reacted to the Halo theme! Halo 2's rock take on the theme was so good and very fitting for the mazing sequel it was to Halo CE.
Van Halen was on the guitar
@@iligyf Steve Vai??
YEAHHH DEARLY BELOVED!! Ahhhh I'm glad to hear it here and the reaction/opinions on it were so fantastic as well.
I've watched all of these, and this is my favorite so far. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do!

Has he ever listened to the Killer Instinct OST by Mick Gordon? Village of whispers, Hinnamatoom, Warlord, inferno and Type-03 are certified bangers, the whole OST is.
I like how Marco and his colleagues talk about music, it's easy to understand what they're trying to say about the music, especially since many other music channels talk like music teachers teaching music theory so when they're like "oh this song does really well with its triplets" I'm immediately lost. This is easier to understand
That was a great video! Interesting topics from Jose too!
I love the spanish bit the beginning! Got me on the floor laughing
I can't believe you dissed Spider Man Pizza Theme. It's so good at conveying such a specific feeling.
Anxiety.
Another video where I'm kindly waiting to watch Marco reacting to Zero from Granblue Fantasy.
I'm not really a big Kingdom Hearts fan (sacrilege I know) but Dearly Beloved is breathtakingly beautiful, maybe one of my favorite pieces of game music of all time.
Since the theme was latin music, makes me wish they had the midi power pro 6 arrangement of "wandering spirits" from castlevania symphony of the night. Surprising lack of castlevania music on this channel, whole series is a collection of bangers.
La cara que puse al entrar al video y escuchar al bola de carne hablar español 😂😂😂
I absolutely love god shattering star, fire emblem three houses has the strangest mix of genres and it's all very fun and experimentational.
glad you're showing it to others!
":D Mi hombre! mi, mi,... what?"
"Hermano, hermano. No soy tu hombre."
XDXD I didn't expect that spanish intro and that "my man" made me spill my water xDXD
José was awesome, would love to see him again!
I highly recommend the Trails series, Bravely Default/BD2, and Library of Ruina/Limbus Company instrumental tracks for future videos like these, ALL of them have pretty powerful orchestral pieces and Ruriko Nakano KILLED it in Eyes That Gaze Into The Nexus.
Incredibly interesting conversation!
DIOS, soy un seguidor tuyo español DESDE HACE MESES, y no me esperaba para nada cuando hablaste en español JAJSJS me parecio muy divertido e inesperado ❤
If you ever want to play some bad video game music, just remember the basement theme from Resident Evil Director's Cut.
I’ve watched every episode of this series of videos I love it so much!
I appreciate you
Even just that small clip of Divine Damsel, I'm crying TToTT
The sound of it just moves something in me
The erhu is such an amazing instrument. No other instrument has such innate emotion to it.
Best episode yet
I didn’t realize Chinese opera had a mixed reception. I’ve always loved the stuff.
Omg, when the erhu comes in at This Is What You Are, it always makes me tear up a bit... So beautiful
I loved your guys back and forth on the philosophy of music, art and entertainment. When you brought up Central City from Sonic it put a grin on my face lol. So that melody is from Diamond Dust Zone from Sonic 3D. Sonic always recycles music and remixes them, but it was definitely an interesting take. But man... that first second with the scale down is burned into my mind that I immediately have to go listen to a few tracks from my childhood lol.
I know the Lost Ark video didn't do the most amazing viewership wise, but I don't think you understand how much I appreciate that you show Astalgia of Phantasm to these guests multiple times. I do really hope you get the chance to check out some of the other tracks, which unfortunately I don't know the names of the tracks themselves, but two specifically for the boss Akkan (or Illiakan in Korean), his "act three" theme is incredible, or the boss Thaemine's theme.
This is really interesting, it's fun that professionals outside of the video game sphere can also appreciate the music, and have their own interesting takes on it. I must ask if you know of Tim Follin? He did music for the early game consoles - NES, C64, Megadrive etc - and he always pushed the hardware way beyond its usual limits, and liked to write multi-layered prog rock tunes even on machines that normally had nothing of the like. And he did that as a teenager. Maybe it's more interesting from a technical standpoint, but his tunes are usually very groovy. Play the NES 'Solstice' intro to one of your guests and see what they say.
Pizza theme is amazing, what are you going on dude!!
love seeing these reactions so much, i hope that for LoZ youve also heard the 25th anniversary concert version of Gerudo Valley! It tickles my brain in the best way
Words will never capture the sheer nostalgia that crashes into my bones whenever I hear that Halo theme, finding out someone has never heard that before is wild
Heyo Marco, have you checked out lies of P music? For a souls like, they really nail the music. I recommend "devine service" for a beautiful piece, and "romeo, king of puppets" theme, which is just super sick writing and composing. Thanks for reading ❤
About art and entertainment,
i personnally think that nowadays writing a piece be it a command or not is made for entertainment but for me art comes in when you play the said piece, because it's the people who play the piece like we saw in the lost ark live performance who gives life to it and let the people experience emotions.
So for video game music i think it's art because the player need to experience an emotion at a certain moment and it's the musicians and artists that need to transcend the entertainement for the piece to become artistic. Ultimately i don't think it's necessary to seperate entertainment and art i just think you don't really have to categorise one another because music move people differently, some people will listen to something and think it's entertaining and other will listen the same be moved and think it's art, so for me art and entertainment are the same think it's just the perception of the people listening or watching that make the change.
P.S. : i write this message just after watching the full video ^^'
Hey, Marco! I don't know if you check the comments for suggestions, but I really think you should check out music from the pirate game Sea of Thieves. The main theme music and the shanties are a great place to start!
Dearly Beloved❤❤❤❤
If you haven't already, I heavily recommend listening to the full soundtrack of plighting because some of them are extremely well made.
Remnant from the ashes and remnant 2 has a stellar soundtrack and almost nobody has reacted to it since it hasn't been officially released. Every track is amazing that is if you can enjoy it while the boss is chasing you around.
I gotchu
I would love if you show mechanicus musics to opera singers
would be so cool to see their reaction haha
Con lentitude ponderosa is peak ROR
Some bangers in here!
I’d love to see a Genshin-only episode with him! Just going through the different regions of Teyvat with their different musical and regional influences with his thoughts on it would be great!
Yeees!!

Jose: I haven’t paid attention to video games since the 1990s.
Marco: you know, Halo main theme (Halo 2 rendition)
🤣
You should always play them one "bad" one, something like Resident Evil Director's Cut - Basement
Just be sure to specify the "Dual Shock ver.", the original Resident Evil Director's Cut still had unchanged OST.
Jose mentioned that he wanted to see someone do God Shattering Star. Joe Zieja (the voice Actor for Claude in Three Houses) has done a cover with FamilyJules, both in the language they used originally and in English.
Con esta son 3 veces que oigo a marco hablando español
I've always wondered, can your guests see the visuals, or that's for us?
I think they're watching normal youtube videos, and the edit we see is specific for this video. But I can't really confirm that.
Yes!
If I hazard a guess, I'd say the guests often don't see the trailers and clips unless it's vital to the experience.
@@MarcoMeatball Mr. Meatball don't do me like that, I asked "One or two?" and you answered "Yes!" lmao.
I know you mean they can see the visuals but my brain is funny that way.
@@SpoopsAHoy Marco's answer...doesn't really answer anything but I think me means they can indeed see them.
I think.
On the subject of manufactured music I think there is a music theory so the effect is that most of them hits a certain floor where they aren't really bad, like it doesn't take a genius to make something that doesn't sound bad, but the actually great ones I doubt were made to appeal to the most people, they are simply just great.
The discussion about game music *needing* to sound good for sales is - in my opinion - a disservice to the composers. I get where he's coming from, and it could absolutely be a factor in massive AAA games, but the problem of music pretention goes far beyond that. I think people are always just looking for a reason to be seen as more sophisticated as others.
Edit: to be clear, I don't think he is doing that. At worse he may be justifying them, but I don't care to put that on him.
He def was just playing devils advocate due to a convo with our professor - just something he wrestles with. I agree with you. It’s an interesting topic of discussion at the very least
@@MarcoMeatball Good to hear. Yeah that makes sense.
Conductor on Astalgia of Phantasm must've gotten a whole workout out of that one
Morning light Hymnus is goated
I really enjoyed the discussion. I am really interested in his take on the happy chaos theme or the elphelt theme. Personally, I'm not a fan of those songs and you play them a lot, but I don't think you can tell me that those pieces were curated to be enjoyable.
You really should check out rayman legends and origins soundtracks, i recommend “when the wind blows” and “fiesta de los muertos”
gerudo valley... sniff, been a while. :D
Chris said that he wants his song to have a clear progression because that fits well the main premise of the game: more time = more difficulty!
I'm kind of a weird case because in my head; whether it be writing, music, acting, video games, art, or anything else, I'm just someone obsessed with storytelling, but.... I also have a business degree because I was told I needed one for the future. So that gives me kind of a weird perspective on the worlds of art and business.
When it comes to the part about "Entertainment" vs "Art" there was an interesting book I read a while back apparently based on the artistic philosophy of Jim Henson that basically talked about how the artist wants to use EVERY resource at their disposal to create the GREATEST thing they possibly could create with the largest impact while the businessman wants to create the biggest gain for the least cost (and in that paradox lies majority of the conflict between the two worlds) Yet at the same time you NEED both worlds.
The artist needs to have the financial/resource gain in order to create better and better works, and without the artist's desire to push the boundaries and create something new, the medium will stagnate and people will lose interest. People are RIDICULOUSLY good at noticing patterns, so the more you try to just "Make a system" or "Make a procedure" the less attractive and more overwhelming it will begin to become. Humans tend to LONG for that primal unpredictable chaos that can only come from organic sources.
So the main thesis from that book was that "You need to make art that will make the money you need to make the art you WANT to make" Whether that be Jim Henson doing more classic works so he could eventually make his dream show of Dark Crystal that was a bit more abstract and hard to pull people in with, or musicians making a banger or two so they can create something REALLY out there that they pour their feelings into... at the end of the day BOTH are needed.
Honestly that's just my take on it. Though I will also say IMO music is BEST when it's used as a way to pour out our hearts. There is something about the emotions that can be communicated through music that just CAN'T be said through the written word... and at the end of those days, those true emotions will resonate with people far more than just doing a I-V-vi-IV chord progression because that's what sells :P
Sorry for the essay! Keep up the great content!
Love this bit about Jim Henson. Great insight, thanks for sharing!
Ima be honest, there was so many good songs in here that it felt like I was edging cause the songs always got cut off before ending 💀

Marco hablando español (O_o) sorpresas que no sabia que necesitaba jajaja
I heard Sonic Chronicles and felt every bone in my body shudder in fear for my eardrums
So because video game music accompanies the game, it's when the music ruins the game moment, in a more objective sense (taste is subjective of course) that that happens imo. That's when "bad music in video games" occurs.
There's also the absense of feeling, when the music is neutral towards the game moment when it should invoke something. There's alot of feeling and nostalgia in video game music, and usually the best tracks are those.
Exception to these are when the music is so badly that becomes comedically good and when the game itself is bad but the music carries it.
In the discussion on They Might as Well Be Dead and this idea of music without a through line I did have to think of RTS sountracks again.
I keep plugging AoE any chance I get but while AoM and AoE3 which I consider the best soundtracks of the series have some dynamic music, most of it still designed in a way that has to sort of work no matter what is currently happening/not happening. AoE3 is particularly good for its setting I feel, usually carrying some level "grand adventure" feel, but less in the sense of say RPGs where it is characters adventuring, but more Nations question for glory and the pomp, uncertainties and military action that they finding and taking in the Americas.
So what I feel is that a lot of these tracks can't be tied to what is happening like film music or more linear games, but can really only invoke a certain feeling/emotion or drive.
Also for a Piece of music I very much like, but wouldn't call good by usual metrics it would be Morning Star from the Binding of Isaac Repentance OST. It's not bad as in badly made, but it feels very unstructured in some ways? Hard to exactly describe for someone without musical training.
Will definitely be looking to check the VOD here and take in some more of your guys discussion. He was another fantastic guest to have.
This is coming up a lot so AoE is definitely on my list. If anything but for the nostalgia bomb of realizing a game I played when I was like 12 had phenomenal music and I just didn’t know at the time
There's a green cartoonish looking parrot at my door. Someone send noodles.

If you wanted to hear a bad OST track, should has checked out Basement Mansion from Resident Evil: Directors Cut.
Talking bad vidja game music and forgetting The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends on the NES.
If your friend hasn't heard "A Beautiful Song" from Neir Automata then I think you should recommend it. I have a feeling they would love it, especially if you tell them that its sung in a language that was made specifically for that game world/music
One of these days you and someone else HAS to listen to the COD perk jingles and rank them
I think now has been long enough to start requesting for you to listen to the big Undertale the musical video by man on the internet so you can re experience that incredible game in a new way.
Im not going to cover it because I don’t do covers. I know it’s great. I’ll maybe consider asking them for permission we will see! Plus Undertale anything gets copyright claimed and after the BS that Undertale yellow went through I just don’t think it’s worth it. I had to fight to get some claims removed from my gameplay streams that I consider “educational” so I’m really tired of dealing with it
@@MarcoMeatball Oh damn didn’t know about all the copyright stuff that happened, that’s such a shame. I wish that stuff doesn’t happen all the time for no reason. I can only hope you don’t have to experience that again if you do happen to do it.
Also fair that you don’t do covers for your main channel and just want to focus on the original and offical stuff. But I do have a random idea I’m just gonna throw out cause why not, how about a second side account for stuff like covers and maybe even fan songs that you do once a week or 2. Might be fun seeing what the fan bases can create. You don’t have to do it if you don’t want to of course.
But anyways keep enjoying yourself while listening to music and playing games.
I haven't played ace combat and never will (air combat not my thing), but their soundtracks are just bangers all the way through.
Uauh, oír hablar a Marco en español ha sido toda una sorpresa XDD
