  • In her talk, Maddie reflects on her journey of mental health recovery through memories of a remarkable friendship. Maddie also suggests that there is a difference between what we need and what we want to need, and that this can help us understand our role in rescuing ourselves. Maddie Cross-Kaplan is a senior at William & Mary majoring in History with the intention of going to law school or getting her M.A. and Ph.D in history. Outside of class, she is the Logistics Chair of the Mock Trial Team, co-President of Project HEAL, and editor for the James Blair Historical Review. She hopes her talk helps to reframe mental health struggles as a common human experience and shows that while others cannot rescue us from these challenges, acknowledging what we need is imperative to helping others help us. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

You are truly an inspiration Maddie! I am so grateful that our paths crossed. Keep reaching out and answering the questions from others "what do you need."

So proud to know you Maddie! Sorry to hear you've had setbacks in the past few years, but you're still one of the bravest people I know.

Mental health recovery is a journey that requires active participation and engagement from the individual. It is not a passive process that can be achieved by simply taking medication or attending therapy sessions.
