  • Airport 1975 star Susan Clark reveals the behind-the-scenes secrets of filming the classic 1970s airplane disaster film with TV Time Machine host Jim Benson.
Susan Clark discusses working with cast members Gloria Swanson, Charlton Heston, Karen Black, Sid Caesar, Jerry Stiller, and Dana Andrews. Ms. Clark also talks about the challenges of filming on location in Salt Lake City, Utah, and at Universal Studios in Los Angeles, California.
Released on October 18, 1974, Airport 1975 told the harrowing tale of a Boeing 747 and its passengers fight for survival after a mid-air collision kills most of the flight crew, forcing the head stewardess (Karen Black) with no flight training to take control of the aircraft.
Airport 1975 was part of a series of popular 'air disaster' films produced by Universal Studios in the 1970s, following Airport (1970) and preceding Airport '77 and The Concorde: Airport '79.
Filmed on location at Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C. and Salt Lake City Aiport in Salt Lake City, Utah, Airport 1975 was produced by William Frye, Executive produced by Jennings Lang, and directed by Jack Smight. The all-star cast featured Charlton Heston, Karen Black, George Kennedy, Efrem Zimbalist, Jr., Gloria Swanson, Susan Clark, Martha Scott, Sid Caesar, Jerry Stiller, Nancy Olson, Erik Estrada, Roy Thinnes, Dana Andrews, Larry Storch, and many more.

This is a gem!! Airport 75 is total guilty pleasure for me. I absolutely love the film. A 70's landmark. I wish there was more behind the scenes stuff on it.

Likewise! The best behind-the-scenes resource for Airport 1975 is the magazine that was published in 1974. There are still a few copies in existence floating around on the internet.

What? magazine? I want to find this. There is a very cool behind the scenes shot of them filming the cockpit mock up with the dummy going out the side. We met the DP Phil Lathrop in 85@@thetvtimemachine

I love this movie, as a kid I loved it, as a teen, and even now as a 59 year old. It's always been special to me. Thank you for the upload.

You're welcome! We're around the same age, I saw Airport 1975 as well when it was originally released in 1974. Since then, I've seen it over 200 times!

The whole Mormon temple story with Jerry Stiller was quite interesting and unfortunate. I thought they liked Jewish folks, but this isnt the place to talk about that. Great information from Susan and good job!
