Gloria Swanson wrote all her own dialogue for this film. She also delivered the last line of the film. This was her first movie in twenty-two years. She explained, "I was holding out for a picture I could take my grandchildren to see, something exciting and contemporary without senseless violence."
"Miss. Swanson, what is the secret of your eternal youth? I will not eat poison food, I don't like it' She was such pioneer of healthy eating, she knew the dangers of poisonous food decades ahead of her time.
Filmed May 1974 simultaneously with Earthquake, hence Charlton Heston and George Kennedy were juggled between sets. Gloria Swanson looks better here playing herself at 75 than she did in Sunset Blvd. aged 50. Ironically this film was released Oct. 18th, 1974 even though it was called Airport '75.
It's a funny inside joke that she says the pilot of her plane was Cecil B. DeMille when as Norma Desmond she said the iconic line "Mr. DeMille I'm ready for my closeup."
Anyone notice it's Linda Harrison aka Summerland from planet of the apes as Nova. Charlton Hestons love interest but now Heston has Karen Black. This is almost a first speaking role I've seen for her and it's incredibly mind blowing.Such a figure hiding in the business suit. I was only able to recognize her by her beautiful brown eyes behind the brown hair put up. Wish I could see her now.
She ended up being in this film after her then husband failed to get her the role of Brody’s wife in Jaws. Stunningly beautiful. Which actually hurt her chances for the Jaws role, ironically.
The best part of all those disaster movies is the spoof versions that continue to amuse us. How many of us can quote lines from Airport '75 and how many can quote lines from Airplane (and sequel)? Too bad they didn't get Gloria Swanson for a cameo in Airplane
The makers of the movie originally hoped to get Greta Garbo for the part, playing herself, but had to be satisfied with Swanson. It's funny to watch her wax lament over her old Hollywood days in front of Myrna Loy, of all people, who could all but do the same thing. Loy always looks so unimpressed with the "ingenue" in a movie whose beauty is just so stunning, or with Swanson in this instance. She just seems to say, been there, done that. Funnier still, Joan Crawford was wanted for the Myrna Loy part, initially. Joan Crawford and Sid Ceasar? I can't help but think they wanted someone else for Ceasar's role.
Loy states in her memoirs they were cast together because there was no script & producers hoped they'd be funny together, but Caesar was shy & needed writers (who all went onto great careers, Reiner, Brooks, Allen). Loy didn't need dialogue to kill, watch her side-eye in The Thin Man & bacting in BYOOL.
Funny a true star, “ to hell with the jewelry, let’s put my book in this, I never wanted my book to be published while I was alive anyway.” Great stuff here.
It's so funny when she talks about healthy eating because she had this to say about filming this movie in a 1975 interview: "On my first day, I bumped into Myrna Loy & was stunned. Her skin was like parchment. I ordered her to eat nothing but bean sprouts and chamomile tea for a week and brought over a large jar of my own ointment and in a week, those lines as big as the Grand Canyon were gone. Sid Caesar asked for some too, but he was beyond saving."
I love how Myra Loy is looking at Gloria like “Wow. You really are mediocre.” And she’d be correct. Her star hit its height with Billy Wilder and “Sunset Blvd”. It was all downhill after 1950 for her….guest spots on Lucille Ball’s later, dreary sitcoms, I think she replaced the original actress playing the mother part in “Butterflies Are Free” on Broadway. Her voice barely projects. Amazing she was able to do any stage work at all. A dreary end to a career that would have been better left in the era of silent films.
"Every morning is beautiful. You're just too young to know it!" Damned right, Gloria!
It's the last line of the movie too!
She's dead.
Gorgeous woman. Even in her 80s she was striking. Those eyes, that million dollar smile and cheekbones.
Gorgeous Gorgeous beautiful Woman ❤
That 3 foot height. Which was handy for screen tests & auditions, off & on screen.
Those eyes
She and Valentino were great together in "Beyond The Rocks. " 🎬

There is no dialog, she's plugging another book.
Lol! That's funny considering most of her films were silent.
Gloria Swanson is the definition of class.

Yes, I did.
Like Botox.
surely this is a joke?
@@unowen-nh9ovthey didn’t have Botox then.
Yes. She did.
Gloria Swanson was such a class act.
Because it was an act, duh.
Its a bit Dark that she names her two friends as Carole Lombard, and Grace Moore. Two stars who died in plane crashes!
So they couldn't contradict or compete with her.
Just love her so much
She was just beautiful. Timeless beauty and class.

Classic young fella...
The Great Gloria Swanson!
It's a funny inside joke that she says the pilot of her plane was Cecil B. DeMille when as Norma Desmond she said the iconic line "Mr. DeMille I'm ready for my closeup."
She knew De Mille for years and did actually make several films with him, long before they were reunited in Sunset Boulevard
That was probably an anecdote, not a joke
I like all the airport movies
Well...THAT'S A STAR !!!
Epic!!! Love her. This movie is a timeless gem 💎 she actually flew in a Fokker Dr.I in 1917..
Swason is great playing a fantasy version of herself

The ultimate movie star
The only person in this dated movie worth watching
Yes, 1975 is a date, congratulations.

Linda Blair (Exorcist) being wheeled into the plane
& her career into the grave.
Her assistant is Linda Harrison (Nova). Miss her long hair.
I wonder why she's billed in "Airport '75" as Augusta Summerland?
@@goodowner5000
l believe Linda was involved with a guru at the time, and this was the name she assumed.
Love her

Garbo in Airpor 751 Actually any old classic movie star would have worked Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Mae West
"The Mountains.. we're so close!" Garbo would have killed that line! 🔥

Swanson & Garbo both should have stayed silent & in silents, Garbo was too busy stalking Manhattan telephone poles to make a comeback.
5 days omgggggggggg
I was in Madrid !!! look there !!!! omg !!!
The original Young And The Restless Jack Abbott actor, Terry Lester, helping her on the escalator.
@Keith He died of multiple heart attacks.
@@wheninrome345From helping Gloria?
It looks like both the jewelry and the tape recorder would have fit easily into the bombproof case.

1:34, I would like to see Whitney Cummings in this role.
So what happened to the box with her book/interviews?
Miss Swanson did publish her autobiography, about 5-6 years after 'Airport '75'.
Remaindered. Had a double for the audio book. Stunt double, like here.
For a second I thought it read airplane.

Indeed it is the late Jerry Stiller
@@mario0318 fun fact: Jerry Stiller improvised his lines in this film.

Yet Loy continued to be hired.
Pasadena ????? omfg :O
Sounds like BS to me. There weren't any airports in Hollywood. Must have been Burbank Airport.
She was soo short
Lol
