Holyoke is a tough town, and you can say what you want about Puerto Ricans, but most of them are hard working and have a sense of honor and loyalty that you don't find in other groups. I have never had a bad experience with them in Holyoke. On the contrary, they saved my ass many times. I finally visited PR after the hurracane and I love the people and culture.
Exactly! people are people, and you will find both good and bad! I have been here for 5 years, and get along quite well with them or they leave me alone which is fine too!
Boricuas are mostly all good people. I grew up with many in Waltham back in the day. Boricuas are generally always cool & hospitable if you are cool to them

Yeah, and also some of the best housing costs because of the crime. People needing a home after theirs was destroyed by a hurricane will do what they need to do. Puerto Ricans are good people and good neighbors. My neighborhood in Waltham (South Side) was probably 1/3rd Puerto Rican when I grew up. Now Puerto Ricans are like the #3 Latin group in Waltham, behind Guatemalans & Salvadorians. Why? Because the Puerto Rican people moved on & up economically/educationally, and left an opening for new Latin immigrants to move to an accepting city. And I can't wait to see those hard working people get ahead too.

It was a community in decline and has been for years. The ONLY reason why poor immigrants could afford to move here was BECAUSE it was already in decline!

Thats why democrats are slow to make real changes or give away free phones instead of giving more meaningful things. Republicans are capable of this too, but for Democrats, who exclusively run the inner cities this seems like their bread & butter. if the powers-that-be REALLY wanted Holyoke to move into being a middle class town, they could make it happen. its only 40,000 people here.
