right? i love going to malls but whenever i go it seems like there's not a single store that i like. either they were weird cheap stores, or expensive luxury stores for the rich. even the restaurants aren't as good, and they've "modernized" mall designs and i think they look so boring now, especially without any arcades.
Fun fact. The reason why the mall was created in the first place was because of Minnesota's notoriously harsh Winters. People needed something to do indoors.
I live in a regular town, maybe on the smaller side, in Ontario and the mall here is still doing well even with the restrictions due to covid. But then, the middle class here in Canada do thrive 😌
FLoof :D I live in London and yeah the malls are always busy here. There’s only one big mall that’s basically dead but only cause there isn’t much there.
FLoof :D Yeah there’s Masonville, White Oaks and another one called Westmount. Westmount is the dead one but it used to be packed as well like 10 years ago but all the good stores moved out so no one goes there that much now. Also White oaks mall is mostly crowded on weekends.
Same here. There was a massive Toys r Us store that closed down near where I live and it was purchased and is currently being turned into a gym / sports complex.
@@oyster3145 That's a great idea. There is one that closed where I live and then was turned into a furniture store right before covid hit and now it's an empty building again.
Theres was an abandoned mall near where I lived as a teenager and we used it as a drifting circuit. I also crashed my car in there and had to declare to my insurance how I crashed.....yeah I didn’t get paid out for it
I think a big part of the problem is that stores have become to utilitarian and boring. That's ok for big box stores in shopping centers, but it doesn't work for malls. Malls need the type of stores that are fun to browse and just hang out in, even if you don't intend to buy anything. Remember stores like Natural Wonders or the toy store Zany Brainy? Or Halloween stores that felt like a haunted house exhibit? You felt like you were visiting a fun interactive children's museum when you went in one of those kinds of stores. They had all kinds of fun, unique merchandise that was out on display and you could just go in there to play with the stuff. That's the kind of thing malls need to have, especially the smaller ones that aren't able to put in things like indoor amusement parks. Unfortunately, I guess those kinds of stores can only profit in a boom economy and in the world that existed before the internet. (at least in the U.S, anyway)
Remember the Discovery Channel store and the Imaginarium? No better places to find cool gifts. I re-visited my old favorite mall for the first time in a decade, and was pleasantly shocked they still had a Spencer's and a Claire's in there. But even that visit was like 2 years ago, so who knows now.
This! Everything feels so sterile. Off white paint and no soul. Same with outside the mall too. I remember pizza huts and taco bells had unique buildings. Now they're all square and plain.
Mainly laziness of the ruling business class. They can make millions doing virtually nothing- just copy paste the same old designs- send jobs overseas, make money. The rent is insanely high for mall stores. Yet I don't see how it can cost that much to build or operate a mall. Seems like they expect insanely high profit margins simply because they made them in the past- then everyone wants in on it so they built too many malls. Then the second thing is mainly its all clothing stores. Even if an arcade or something opens up they eventually go under because of the insane rent. It would make sense to put a bowling alley or Dave and Busters or something at the end instead of a SEARs or whatever. The mall around here the restaurants are the only thing doing well in it. The business class aren't smart enough to figure out that activity based shops would do well also. Even the clothing stores I seldom see interesting clothes. The items they order seem to all be on auto-pilot- no thinking involved. I could go online and find more interesting outfits to put on display at these places in many cases. Similar when I worked at restaurants- none of the managers would actually managed, even though they got paid good salaries. The workers get paid poverty wages and have to both do all the work and also take on all the management duties. If there is a problem you have to resolve it yourself- manager doesn't manage. Schedule aren't written right- either too many or too little schedule so you have to adjust when you get there- some go home- or call in extra help or do the job of two people, bad workers never get fired, good ones never get promoted. The "manager" just copies and pastes everything they did last week- its all on autopilot. When I contact the business owners like- your business is being severely mismanaged. It means a lower quality product when I want to buy something, it means I make less money and have a miserable experience when I work there and it means you make less profit. The owners just get annoyed at me- they could care less since they make huge profits sitting back and doing nothing except own the business. Then they pay big salaries to manages who sit back and do nothing and the little guy is left living homeless while working a full time job and expected to constantly compensate for the lack of leadership anywhere. I'd say we need to tax inheritance so that more of the ruling business class get there by merit instead of inheriting the position. And then also pay people a living wage and offer free or affordable college to anyone who keeps good grades. And offer $2,000 checks for anyone who is on welfare and will get their tubes tied so we can limit the amount of idiots being born each year. Then have a merit based immigration system. It would manifest itself in non-obvious ways such as the fact that we'd have more businesses that are well managed and less malls dying.
People "just hanging out, even if they don't intend to buy anything" is what leads to store closings. A store doesn't make money off people hanging out, and that's what most people did at malls. Guys certainly didn't buy much at malls, because they were 90% clothing and shoe stores.
"I'm going to start up a store where people can just come hang out and not buy anything," said NO PERSON EVER. You millennials are so dang cute, though.
I remember when I was in middle school and high school in the late 80's early 90's the mall was THE place to be. Everybody would go after school to hang out. It was a great time.
Once this country recovers from the pandemic and opens its northern border again, I'm moving to Canada, their middle class is still going strong, and they have many more shopping malls per capita.
@juan mateus too true. i live in a third world country and even in this pandemic and social distancing measures, malls are still up and running as usual.
Thats cuz you cant actually hang out and have fun anymore. Too many karens and people angry with their own lives so they don’t like seeing anyone else have fun.
I wish that malls had something more than generic clothing stores, generic jewelry stores, or the usual restaurants we all see everywhere. And do we really need 5 different stores that sell bath salts and soap?
THIS! This is the real reason why malls are closing up. The mall near my house, I never go to unless I'm out and about working side gigs (Uber, Grubhub, et all) and need a place to use the restroom due to a grocery store being further away. My mall is still up and running (was closed for awhile due to the pandemic.) and ALL it has is clothing stores, jewelry stores, and food stands. Oh and the odd shoe store. The only store that I'll even walk in to browse is FYE. Back in the day it was gamestop, etc. But now that they are the most hated store on the planet, there's really no reason to go to a mall. Malls are for highschool girls, and their accompanying boyfriends/friends who just want an excuse to hang out with a hot girl. As that's literally the only crowd they cater to now. HS girls going on shopping sprees and the guys go for eye candy the entire time. Once you get out of highschool, the mall is an extremely boring place. Well, until your a senior. Then you spend all day at the mall at JCP, or Macy's. (Seriously the amount of senior customers I see at my local mall macy's could fill a damn nursing home.) Hell that's the only reason why I go to a mall in my off time for a bit. People watching. There are still quite a bit of girls 21+ who frequent malls. And just like walmart, girls seem to dress extremely slutty. Almost as if it's a requirement to enter the mall. "Um, ma'am, I'm sorry but you don't look slutty enough. We can't allow you inside. Please change."
@Kurogane -sensei Back in the 90s, used to be the same way here in the US. At least in the areas I've lived in. You could guarantee a really unique stand was waiting for you at the mall. Hell there was this one stand that sold anime figures. I'd convince my grandfather to buy me one every time we'd go to the mall. And I'm not talking cheap figures either. I'm talking $100+ each visit. Absolutely loved that stand. Of course being a kid, I destroyed or lost all those figures. And of course, given who's company I was in, I wasn't allowed to buy the risque figures. But I'd definitely look at em out of the corner of my eye.
Yeah when I was younger, malls I went to had book stores, record stores, better quality clothing stores, a whole bunch of variety of different stuff that catered to lots of groups of people etc, now most are not available
Malls are a bit boring in my opinion. Most of them no longer have book stores. They sell the same kinds of low quality clothing and shoes. There isn't much interesting to do there. I can buy stuff from home. I'd rather spend my time elsewhere.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Malls are eventually occupied by much smaller home grown businesses, rather than the chains you usually associate with large malls.
I doubt it. Malls are now mostly places to hangout or look at clothing and purchase items in person. We can now purchase anything online, so why would anyone go to a home business when a mall would be much funner? Yes malls are closing down, but the biggest and more central ones are still thriving
Yes I remember a time when malls (we call them shopping centres in the uk ) had more independent stores back in the 80s, shopping was kind of more interesting experience back then as each store was unique. Would be nice to see them again and independent shop keepers rather than chains.
@@lakeatman504 Yes. For some reason, multi-story parking garages are not popular for malls. Off the top of my head, I can only think of one suburban mall that has one... and even it still has extensive parking lots around it as well. I can sort of get that it doesn't "look pretty", but honestly, acres of feet blistering asphalt isn't attractive either, even with the rare forlorn tree here and there.
I grew up in 1980s USA and lived in Moscow, Russia for the last 6 years. Their huge, fancy malls are very much still packed. It's clearly a cultural difference.
Nowadays Majority of us r shopping in online ...My parents used to take me to malls to buy me clothes and shoes ...now I buy it Online and, it’s pointless to go to malls ....
Thats just because we got it here much later. Ours are fully packed with migrants who pay nothing just sit at food court. Middle class shops online since the COVID. Malls in Russia have not much time left.
@@bikmaharjan9497 They're also at major transport hubs. They have car parking, but teens can get to them via walking or public transport too & basically if teens in particular want to go out ANYWHERE with friends, they will be passing or in very easy access of a major mall in teh process, so it motivates them to go there. The US on the other hand builds malls in the middle of no-where, with nothing but what the mall provides accessible if taking a car trip there, so no wonder theirs are dying!
Same here in Chile, but not right now with the pandemic. I think that is about were the mall is located. Here in Chile the malls are located in the city center or close to important commercial zones and I think that malls in USA are away from them. Pd. Sometimes the malls are close to important mass transit station.
I went to a mall in Vietnam, back in January and it was so crowded that it was impossible not to rub up against someone. I cannot speak for the rest of the world, but Vietnamese malls were not experiencing this problem. So it may just be an American problem.
@Takeda takahashi Millennials and gen Y are the same group so this is only half true because the older end of the millennials still mall shop because that's how they gew up.
Abandoned malls could be used as hospitals or homeless shelters. Either that or just use them as big skate parks so we could live out our pro skater dreams.
Here in monroe county, Rochester regional health has been using parts of the malls for emergency care. While it’s nice the space is being used, it feels more like a locust infestation rather than a revitalization of vacant space
@@MrCleitus feel free to deal with as much crime as you bring on yourself by failing to support policies that prevent people needing to rob you to survive. SO glad I dont' live in the US with such selfish people!
Yea I live near a outlet mall and many people go and hang. Maybe because they adapted to modern day standards, clean, benches. Would love to see a video about their success
For hanging out and just relaxing, yes, these malls are fine. But in terms of actual sales, I would say they are decreasing. Most people have switched to online shopping for better prices, selection, etc.
@@thepeoplestightend1939 You see people with tons of bags at outlets. Maybe because they have alot of stuff you can't find at other stores or because there's tons of sales but it takes forever to pay for items due to the long check out lines at outlets .
Can't find any cute clothes at malls. The new aesthetic, influenced by Instagram, TikTok and other social media apps makes it hard for fast fashion brands to keep up, since they still think, that people are interested in skinny jeans and graphic t-shirts, when in reality- people want something stylish for affordable price. Therefore, people choose internet shops as an alternative. And as a designer myself, I see no problem in making stylish affordable.
In smaller countries with crappier online shopping, the mall isn't dying as quickly. I love the mall. If you're not an off the rack fit It's great to be able to try on clothes.
Here in the Philippines, so many malls are awesome, mainly because of affordable prices as well as entertainment leisure. Not sure why people still care only about shopping in a mall rather than having fun in a mall like watch a movie, playing at an arcade or playing Bowling. Heck, many Bowling centers in the Philippines aren’t dying too because they’re in malls as well and even the ones aren’t in malls were still in good shape til this day.
You have that reversed actually. Amazon has invested millions, if not billions, into major local warehouses in various countries, so as to try to make a dent in the shopping market, but no matter what they do, they simply cannot compete with the convenience of well placed & managed malls. Online shopping only takes over in countries that have crappy malls, ie the US
In the 70s every town/city had it's mall, and it was Air Conditioned. And they were different from each other. Different stores, snacks and products. It was fun to drive to a different city/mall on the weekend to see what they had. Pretty soon they became the same, the same shops and food outlets took over. Soon all the clothing stores at the mall were owned by the same head company, same with shoe, jewelry and music stores. Once you knew there was no competition and the prices were fixed you felt cheated and manipulated. There was no reason to go to any but the biggest malls. McDonald's, Burger King, Dairy Queen and KFC chased out the cool international snack places. Rents kept going up chasing the last of the small unique stores/food places out. The fun was gone, and the mall became a place to go when you just needed a new pair of shoes or jeans, nothing more.
Brands, I think? If you're going to buy Michael Kors, most people wouldn't go to target. Same thing for jewelry, perfumes, etc. At Target, you expect cheaper, everyday things. Though I would say, online shopping is nice at Macy's because they often have great deals on expensive stuff (like getting a $300 jacket for $50).
I love malls! I love the smell of Cinnabon & auntie anne's. I love the mall around Christmas time & the Christmas music. nostalgia. It’s not the same vibe.
I actually love the fact that my country is a little behind.. my hometown opened it’s first big mall a year ago! Online shopping isn’t used as much yet.. I’m glad :))
as a teen from Turkey, Malls of the 80's from the movies seem like genuinely cool places for gathering when there was no social media... Malls were much more aesthetic then, i kinda miss that even though i've never seen them
As a teen in the 80s, I can tell you you missed out on a lot of fun and friendships that could only be found in that setting. Not on social media or some app. People really are spending their LIVES looking at their "smartphones."
and with middle class essentially dead, who is going to be able to afford all these luxuries? The wealthy only makes up less than 5% of the US population. Seems like a waste to me.
Kevin Fernandes well what I mean is if I get a prepaid debit card they have no way of tracking what I get if you know what I mean. But at least there is Safeway
Filipino malls will never die because of the job opportunities people benefit from. The demand is good, therefore they sustained great success over the past few decades.
I'm older with a young mind and I still love malls but there are too many worthless or silly stores or ones that are too high-priced, sorry, expensive fast food places and modern designs that I don't like. Also I counted 8 to 12 empty spaces for stores that are out of business for years because rent is too high at $10,000 a month is what they tell me.
I never understood charging so much that no one's paying. like how is that a good business model? No wonder every time we build something new it's just a matter of time until it goes vacant and then someone gets the bright idea to tear down some new land and build something else because "this time it'll work out"
In Asia gyms, parks are inside of malls. It has to do with the fact that US is sooo spread out. It's more convenient to have it delivered rather than driving far away just to shop. But in Asia you live above a mall.
Irondequoit Mall in Rochester shown numerous times in the shots that are credited “they proper people”, I remember when it opened in the early 90’s , it failed quickly and was pretty much empty within 10 years

I'm Gen Z and absolutely hate what is happening :'( I absolutely love going to the mall and hanging out with my friends/ finding things to buy. I know most in my generation love online shopping tho :/
I am also Gen Z (23), I don’t enjoy going to malls. They’re pretty far away from my house and they aren’t that fashionable in my opinion. Cost probably $20-$30 to get an Uber ride to the mall from my house. I’m also plus size so there’s no guarantee that I’m going to find something to even wear since there are max 4 stores I can shop at and two of them are grandma stores. I’d rather shop online because I can take my time and save my money, compare prices, plus there’s always returns.
What I've noticed throughout the years is that before social media was big, people used to go to the malls to SOCIALIZE and nobody does that becausw of snapchat. Sad times

Last summer, I was visiting family in Jamestown, NY, when we decided to go to the movie theatre in the mall. I hadn't been in years, and I remember everyone being there, the candy machine, and these little animal scooters you could rent to cruise around. When I went, there was practically no one there, almost all the stores and stands were gone, no more candy, scooters, or massage chairs. It was quite sad to see a place that I spent a lot of time in like that.
There's a mall in Malaysia called Sunway Pyramid with an Egyptian theme & aesthetic with an indoor ice skating rink, a man-made surf park, waterpark, outdoor theme park safari zoo (yes, with white lions and everything), bowling alley, archery rink & laser tag. The mall is also connected within walking distance to its own university & hospital and it also has a elevated bus route around the entire area for people to travel from one end to another. It's in the top 10 biggest malls in the world & the place is still packed when I visited last week. It's like an alternated universe for malls in America lol
when you have social media malls need to fill an experience rather than just shopping no one goes to just hang out and shop anymore people go for an experience.
jnxe I believe that’s a joke, you know how some Africans don’t like people using black to associate with African American people? I believe Eddie W is using it ironically to make a joke about that.
It's so much trouble to go out, drive, go to stores, have to or try to talk with people and find items, struggle in the heat or cold from one outdoor entrance to another, no place to sit down....Before COVID I did a great deal of shopping online and I don't expect it to change. Being able to pay for something and have it shipped directly to the recipient, price checking, etc. are so much easier to do at home. I didn't realize how much people drive me batshit crazy until I didn't have to go around them anymore.
And that's what will ultimately kill off malls, covid just accelerated how fast it happened. Like why spend a few hours at the mall dealing with the frustration of finding parking, walking a lot, and navigating through large crowds when you could just buy that thing you want online and have it delivered in a few days
Absolutely! Why would one shop at a mall when there's so much more to browse from home? The only reason I go to my local mall is for groceries and toiletries - the mall wisely has a Trader Joe's and a Target, two stores I'd go to anyway. But I don't browse the other shops in the mall.
they should just do what my town is doing. when we closed the one mall in town, we decided to turn it into senior housing on one side and then the rest into a shopping plaza rather than a new mall.

I worked in a mall and I currently work across from the mall I was in. Granted our mall was outdoor, it was still somewhat booming as one of the few close malls in between the areas where I live. However, one of the malls that used to somewhat flourish in my localish area is completely dead. I re-call going in once or twice inside the mall and the first time was pretty busy with people shoping, but the second time, probably around 2017-2018 (possibly earlier) was dead. It had barely anyone in there and now it has a few anchor shops open, but that's it. The mall is Fiesta Mall in Arizona. I was told in the 80s it was the place to go to, but now it sits as a reminder. I think the decline of malls and shops in general are to a few things: Internet (mostly) as its just easier to order online and not leave the home, too many malls located near one another, decline of middle class, better "hang out" areas for younger crowds.
It sure is! I was surprised to see it as well haha They used older footage. Now there’s a bridge that connects to the upper floor from an adjacent parking garage.
How much office space is needed though? I recently moved from the city to the suburbs and there are so many office buildings, and I would imagine some of these people could work from home, but why are so many office buildings needed in a place where there is little to do.
Here in Arizona I have learned that the only malls that still thrive A LOT are malls that are either mainly Hispanic or malls that have hundreds of trendy stores inside them like Starbucks, Apple store, Nike, and etc.
Here in NC, that’s all you see at malls are a few Hispanics here and there, and just a few of them. It’s not crowded at all. That said, many malls are on their last leg.
I think People from that time would have never believed you if you went back and told them all these huge malls would close down some day. They would look at you like you were crazy. Nothing lasts forever. This sounds crazy and most here won't believe it but in 40 give or take years people will be making videos about Walmart stores going out of business because even Walmart won't last forever. I believe online shopping will last because different people can open a online store without spending millions of dollars to build a store. Love it or hate it online shopping is here to stay. Thank you for the video.
E-commerce is a huge player in taking market share obviously, however, Millennials value experiences and attractions higher than previous generations and because of this the "attraction" malls in nice areas are doing very well and will carry the "mall" into the future. Attractionless malls, outdated/bland malls, and those in rougher/questionable areas will close. It is simply the free market determining what malls are viable into the future in an oversaturated and competitive environment. The idea of what the mall is is becoming more narrowly defined. Sure there may not be a widespread culture of the mall ingrained into the American psyche anymore but this ongoing free market determinism of the "mall" will ensure a higher quality mall experience in the future for any mall goers for the few times a year they may go there..
The mall still has one great purpose tho, and thats movie theatres, which i strongly believe will not go away because even though streaming is now a thing there is nothing like seeing a movie in theatre.
All the malls where I live or where my parents live don't have any. I went to one many years ago, South of Springfield I think, and thought that is what these other malls should try. The only mall that I go to with a somewhat built in movie theater is in Gurnee, and it's mostly for the 4DX movies.
Most malls don't have theaters anymore. Theaters have wised up and separated themselves from the mall industry. At least in my state. I think there's ONE theater in a mall and it's located 4 and a half hours away from my city.
Here in the Philippines malls are the place to go to watch movies, I've never seen a stand alone movie theater here. My mom says there have been stand alone theaters before but they're now all in malls
There are 6 reasons off the top of my head 1. Crime 2. Too many malls in close proximity with each other 3. Less disposable income for Middle Class 4. Online shopping/ cheaper prices online 5. Bad/Lazy mall management 6. Teens/ Young Adults aren’t going to the mall to hang out as much anymore
You forgot to mention security and safety as a reason for old enclosed malls declining. They were designed with limited entry and exit points so you would stay in them longer and go from store to store shopping. That worked many years ago but not now. Post 9/11 and with mass shootings becoming commonplace prior to COVID-19, no one feels safe in a building where you would have to run a tenth of a mile or more to escape a dangerous situation. Eventually all such malls will close and be redeveloped.
That’s so weird. That in other cities malls are so empty. My local mall, Potomac Mills, is always so crowded. It actually felt unnatural to see the parking lot so empty during COVID shutdown.

I went to some mall in Rochester MN in 2017 and like most malls, it had a few anchor stores, in this case: JCPenny, Sears, and Macy's. The sears was closed and covered the sign and entrance with particle board. The Macy's was creepily empty with only a few employees. And the JCPennys for some reason was packed with people and employees. The vending machines were empty, the claw machine had stuff from movies that came out years ago. And some stores were open but had these HUGE closing sales like there was some local video rental shop selling VHS tapes for 3 for 1$ and the guy said they were not renting at this time. He was also very eager to see me and my aunt come in, like "Hello would you like to browse our many DVD sets, or maybe check out our new Blu-Ray selection!?" Like dude just let me walk around ok?
Well i dont think i would call 2000s the decade that start killing malls most mall in 2000s became megamalls and a lot malls became modernization in eastern europe the shopping malls have biggest boom in 2000s
I think this all depends on the outlets inside the mall. My local mall is still thriving and is a place that local teens (myself including) still love to hangout on the weekends with friends.
America: Malls being abandoned Philippines: Malls erected here and there 5 miles apart. People in malls even on weekdays. People in malls during weekends, so many of them that fast foods and restaurants inside have long lines.
Yeah. No one wants to keep spending and spending more and more money in malls lol. I just go to the mall to do shopping and thats litterally it. Nothing else.
Malls started dying with wellbeing of the suburbs they served. That was the late 1980s where I lived. It was the early to mid 1980s in suburbs that were closer in to the city than my suburb. By the time I was out of high school, I had noticed a negative demographic shift in the people at the local malls. Less money spent, more petty crime, less friendly culture.
1.) Decline of middle class

3.) Internet and e-commerce

Fun fact. The reason why the mall was created in the first place was because of Minnesota's notoriously harsh Winters. People needed something to do indoors.

Short answer: The economic decline of the middle class in the USA.
Once this country recovers from the pandemic and opens its northern border again, I'm moving to Canada, their middle class is still going strong, and they have many more shopping malls per capita.

(Seriously the amount of senior customers I see at my local mall macy's could fill a damn nursing home.)
Hell that's the only reason why I go to a mall in my off time for a bit.
Malls need to be experienced driven and they will be in the future
Yeah when I was younger, malls I went to had book stores, record stores, better quality clothing stores, a whole bunch of variety of different stuff that catered to lots of groups of people etc, now most are not available
Malls are a bit boring in my opinion. Most of them no longer have book stores. They sell the same kinds of low quality clothing and shoes. There isn't much interesting to do there. I can buy stuff from home. I'd rather spend my time elsewhere.

maybe make them homeless shelters. maybe low income housing.
Can you see the mall investors allowing a 90% decrease in rent? No. The land will be sold and investors paid out to reinvest in Tesla.
Yes, I just open little kiosks
Would be nice to see them again and independent shop keepers rather than chains.

the short answer: the internet
Online shopping
Amazon
Can't find any cute clothes at malls.
The new aesthetic, influenced by Instagram, TikTok and other social media apps makes it hard for fast fashion brands to keep up, since they still think, that people are interested in skinny jeans and graphic t-shirts, when in reality- people want something stylish for affordable price. Therefore, people choose internet shops as an alternative.

The fun was gone, and the mall became a place to go when you just needed a new pair of shoes or jeans, nothing more.

great idea, but let me think about that a little bit
Yup. Theatres, Storage Rooms. Water parks. Almost anything that is Big.
@Master Of puppets why don't you turn YOUR house into a homeless shelter? Oh is it because YOU'RE too greedy?
@Master Of puppets oh so your house was the one the homeless guy was talking about where he was not let in, so you're still greedy at the end.

@@juanzambrano1760 Ecuador as well, especially Guayaquil.
I live in Asia and our country just built ten new malls in 2017/2018, and I'm like "How you gonna sustain that shit in the age of online shopping?" I loved hanging out at the mall in the 90s and the 2000s. But now I just go in to get one item or to watch a movie at the cinema and get the hell out asap.

@@PraiseworthyNobleman I live in Malaysia and I think we only have 1 mall that has amusement park inside. That's Berjaya Times Square and from what I hear it's not doing as well as it used to when it first opened.
I literally buy clothes to wear to the mall to buy more clothes. It's a nonsense cycle but it works.
It is a nonsense cycle. Don’t be enslaved by it and live miserably because of it.
We spend most our life time in work clothes and pjs. However we spend the most money on clothes to go out a few times a week/month.

Jea rite. Your comment is like from the 80’s

I am surprised that BI missed the one of biggest reason for the decline of malls. Rise of E-commerce.
Mind you that online shopping is as much prevalent in other parts of the world, yet still only US malls are in decline (from what I've heard)
@@lucia-di-lammermoor Because the American suburb is mostly dying, along with the malls.

That so great! Proud of yall
I saw an idea for turning vacant malls into retirement villages
How great!
Add affordable housing to that as well... No sense in wasting good space.

@@Dleefrlula True. Very grey area. Not easy on anyone.
Is that footage of Macy's at 6:02 at Serramonte in Daly City, CA? Gosh memories from 20 yeas ago in middle school are flooding back...
It sure is! I was surprised to see it as well haha
They used older footage. Now there’s a bridge that connects to the upper floor from an adjacent parking garage.
why aren't these malls used for office space?
Exactly, they could have legit repurposed these spaces that are abandoned but are still in decent shape.
keep the foodcourt, rent the stores to use as an office (amazon headquarters? the irony)
@DD217 i forgot which state is doing that but there is a state in the us doing that rn
They are being converted into Amazon distribution centers. Not joking.
How much office space is needed though? I recently moved from the city to the suburbs and there are so many office buildings, and I would imagine some of these people could work from home, but why are so many office buildings needed in a place where there is little to do.
It’s really sad when you have something that’s been with you your entire life, but you’re just watching it die and you can’t do anything about it.
You forgot that malls typically had very favorable tax agreements with cities that eventually expired.
Here in Arizona I have learned that the only malls that still thrive A LOT are malls that are either mainly Hispanic or malls that have hundreds of trendy stores inside them like Starbucks, Apple store, Nike, and etc.
Same here in Las Vegas
Here in NC, that’s all you see at malls are a few Hispanics here and there, and just a few of them. It’s not crowded at all.
That said, many malls are on their last leg.
yea, fashion square is still going strong
Another reason for the decline of the Shopping Mall in America has been the revitalization of the Downtown areas in major cities.
USA: "shopping mall"
UK: *laughs in shopping centre*
Personally I like Sheffield shopping centre it’s so nice
I think People from that time would have never believed you if you went back and told them all these huge malls would close down some day. They would look at you like you were crazy. Nothing lasts forever. This sounds crazy and most here won't believe it but in 40 give or take years people will be making videos about Walmart stores going out of business because even Walmart won't last forever. I believe online shopping will last because different people can open a online store without spending millions of dollars to build a store. Love it or hate it online shopping is here to stay. Thank you for the video.
The mall has this oasis like no other. The smell, the food, the fresh clothing,uh it's just euphoric stepping into a mall.
The mall still has one great purpose tho, and thats movie theatres, which i strongly believe will not go away because even though streaming is now a thing there is nothing like seeing a movie in theatre.
but you can have movie theatres without a mall
^ yup can agree about the philippine malls
There are 6 reasons off the top of my head
1. Crime
2. Too many malls in close proximity with each other
3. Less disposable income for Middle Class
4. Online shopping/ cheaper prices online
5. Bad/Lazy mall management
Starbucks claims to be a “third place” but it so doesn’t fit me.

Not The Rise And Fall Of Mall because Mall still booming in Asia.
