I Went To Springfield, The Most Dangerous City In Massachusetts

  • It's saddening to see a once-great place look like this today.
Massachusetts. The most liberal state of all. Now, we’re not going to get into politics TOO much here, but there are some interesting dichotomies here. Massachusetts does excellent in education, and is actually one of the safest states you can live in. Some rankings (not mine) have called Massachusetts one of the top 5 BEST states you can live in. So, whatever liberalism exists here, things could be worse. I mean look at California.
However, there are some BIG problems here, too. If you asked someone in Massachusetts where the worst places to live are, some will say Lawrence, you’ll hear Holyoke and Brockton or North Adams. And, of course, there’s Springfield.
For this video, we’re going to drive through the worst parts of Springfield, so you can see what is essentially the worst area to live in this whole state. We’ll talk about why this place is so bad and talk with someone who lives here to get additional perspective. As we’ll see, Springfield has improved, but is still in a bad place right now. And there’s no optimism things will get better.
Every state has a bruise. Even the best places to live have bad sides to them. In the case of Massachusetts, it’s here. Springfield has a population of 155,000 people, but that number is down by 17% from its high in the 1960s. People are leaving here for various reasons - the poverty, the crime, for better opportunities. And word is out about how badly this place is doing. At a time when home prices are astronomically high, Springfield is one of 13 cities where home prices are going DOWN. That’s not a good sign.
Back in the day, this place was jammin. They still call Springfield the city of firsts. They made the first dictionary, the first gas powered car, and basketball was invented here. This place was home to many large manufacturers and inventors. They made bread, cars, motorcycles, guns, brass goods, chemicals, watches, toys, engines, books. A lot of stuff was created and distributed here. There were once big downtown department stores.
But like many of our other formerly great cities, things went downhill in the last half of the 20th century. Factories closed down, Springfield city made a series of poor planning decisions, and industries just left the whole northeastern part of the US. We’ve seen similar declines in other cities out this way - places like Rochester, Buffalo and Hartford.
By the mid 1980s, Springfield was known nationally as a place with high crime, political corruption and poverty. A lot of the factories and manufacturing centers here are decaying and have for lease signs up. Companies don’t need to base their operations in these large urban centers. They don’t need to even be in America anymore.
This place almost filed bankruptcy, though it seems to have recovered from near disaster.
The biggest claim to fame for Springfield’s attempt at a turn around came with the opening of the MGM Casino in downtown. But as you probably know, casinos usually bring in additional revenues, but also bring in their share of crime and blight.
Today, nearly 1 in 3 residents here lives in poverty. This is the second poorest city in the whole state.
Springfield certainly isn’t unique. Lots of our former great cities declined over time. And those with greater aspirations have moved into shinier, newer communities. A lot of people took their families into areas nearby - places like West Springfield, Agawam Ludlow and Longmeadow.
So Springfield’s stuck in a rut. And it can’t really grow, either. Much of New England has no unincorporated land, so it’s not like Springfield can absorb nicer nearby communities to springboard growth.
Crime is terrible here. Violent crime is three times the national average, and some of the worst offenders in Massachusetts live right here in Springfield. There’s lots of drugs and gangs and lots of kids roaming the streets without guidance.
Although things have improved here - I mean crime has peaked somewhat, though not in some neighborhoods like the one we’re in right now. Graduation rates are going up, and a new train manufacturing plant gives folks hope.

If you keep to yourself, trouble usually doesn’t find you. I will admit, the city does need a lot of work to fix it up. We need to hold property owners to a high standard of keeping their properties clean. There are many gorgeous homes in Forest Park, East Forest Park and 16 acres. Springfield has a lot going for it. The cost of living is very affordable, compared most of the state. Where can you buy a 2-4,000 square foot house for less than 300k.

My husband and I recently moved to Springfield from eastern Mass. We fell in love with a beautiful historic home. We both work corporate jobs and have a comfortable income. It's been 9 months since we moved to Springfield. My observation is that there is a stigma from nearby towns and others. I've observed it at my child's doctor's office, where there seems to be an assumption that if someone lives in Springfield, they are automatically considered poor. This video was biased, and you failed to show other parts of Springfield. Every city has its trouble spots, but you generalized Springfield and failed to interview others.

Being from Boston, I know first hand that wanting to move to Florida goes back generations, even in good economic times. It's kind of engrained into a lot of people up here that Florida is a better place to live. So people continue with this 'the grass is greener' complex, even though in reality things have been changing for the worse down there for a while. But with that said, Springfield has been a worse place to live relative to eastern Mass. for decades. Apparently even in the '60s when I had relatives that lived there.

It's the same in Vermont. There's no more industry so they want only rich people and welfare. The rich will support the welfare...there's no industry so middle class doesn't exist. Springfield used to be bustling fifteen years ago but has gone down a lot since. With such division in today's society, I can't see Springfield ever being as it was. A lot of industry and jobs have fallen victim to overseas and local small businesses can't survive because of Amazon's and Walmart's. Online shopping has closed a large percent of Mom & Pop shops in New England.

Some parts of springfield are ok, but most places (especially the main metropolitan areas) are horrible, as someone who has lived here they're whole life, moving from apartment to apartment, i can say that springfield is the straight definition of the ghetto, the amount of times i seen people get shot or stabbed over a bag of chips or a soda is incredible.

The problem in places like Springfield in Massachusetts isn’t high taxes or Welfare. You can get welfare anywhere. Literally anywhere. And no, Mass can’t get someone money by the end of the day. It’s access. They centralize resources in areas like Springfield and North Adams and that’s attractive for people who need those resources. They have everything they need right there. Hospitals, access to affordable food, child care, wic, DTA, copious public housing, shelters, etc. If they got rid of access, took out public housing, and got rid of affordable food then places like Springfield wouldn’t look so attractive.

As the gentlemen who was interviewed mentioned about knowing people who were advised to forgo increased hours and promotions to avoid losing their benefits, it is apparent that some of these people receiving these benefits indeed do work albeit part time or full time with pittance of earnings. They get a pittance of a wage and no benefits from their employers whereby the employers are shifting the labor costs of benefits (insurance, retirement, sick pay) onto the government. Now if they were to accept the increased hours or promotions, they do get better pay, but lose the crucial benefits and whereas even with the additional pay from the extra hours and promotions they still simply still not be able to independently on their own afford utilities, rent, food and healthcare all instrumental for their survival. I know this as all too well as the home healthcare aides who took care of my late mother all worked full time doing hard work taking care of her and multiple elderly clients but were paid poorly and had all EBT, Masshealth, Section 8 and other benefits as they could not survive on the pittance of the wages they received. Corporate greed of underpaying and exploitation of labor is a large problem contributing to this so it is not always sheer laziness and freeloading.

I lived in Springfield for 6 years and can honestly say it's not that bad of a city. Especially when compared to some of the other ghetto's you've visited on your channel. It's a great place to buy a house if you want to live in ultra expensive Massachusetts. Like any city it has really nice sections and others you wouldn't want your worst enemy to live in. I live closer to Boston now but wouldn't rule out living in Springfield again.

I agree to an extent. It has a bad reputation for good reason. The violent crime rate each year always ranks amongst the highest in the state. The city is so big and diversified tho that you can escape it depending on where you live. I’d say Brockton, Lawrence, Lowell, Fall River, New Bedford, Lynn, Worcester, and Haverhill are also some bad ones. Boston obv has bad areas too.

I worked in Springfield on the ambulance for several years, we had lots of calls relating to gang violence around the downtown area and southern neighborhoods. Overall not horrible, majority of days were just quiet. As soon as you leave downtown it's quite decrepit but the further out you go the better it gets. The area isn't overly violent just poor, lots of homeless and people living on social services. Unfortunately you missed the sketchiest drug den streets of school, high, and temple. As well as the street of the shelters- Worthington. Worst streets, open drug dens and tweakers

I worked in some of those projects you showed as a social worker. It was very interesting work. I saw a lot. I saw worse things in NYC as a social worker. My most memorable case was an old fellow who was a victim of crimes against humanity. He was the sweetest man you will ever meet. Always super happy to get a visitor and always beaming. Only, he had not bathed in 40 years due to pure fear of past abuse. I really loved working in Springfield I met the best people. Downtown is much better now and safer than it was 6 years ago.
