I think if BMW engines could RELIABLY handle 1000hp the F1, a some flagship M series BMW, would have touted it long ago. Realistically, being a german made 6 cylinder engine, forced induction engines are only going to sustain 500, to 750bhp before needing beefed up internals, and possibly cylinder liners. As those numbers can be achieved by Mk4 Supra 2JZ, without ever opening the engine. The 2020 Supra will NEVER have the straight line potential of the mid 90's models. However, with modern suspension, LSD's and traction control technologies, the 2020 Supras have vastly greater technical track capabilities, and their "track day" potential far exceeds that of the Mark 4's. That having been said, there is no real way to compete the two vehicles fairly, they're 2 completely different animals. The Mark 4's were built solely by Toyota. Toyotas "bullet proof" engine designs were perfect for nitrous and turbo driven exploitation, by the 1/4 mile race centric, car culture of the 1990's. Whilst, on the other hand, as superchargers have become the more favorable method of forced induction, providing instant power, perfect for acceleration out of the turns. Technical race tracks, and drift racing, have come into favor. Reducing the demand for 1000+ horsepower by car enthusiast, and moving their focus towards more balanced vehicle specifications. The same types of specs found in the new 2020 Toyota Supra, making it a better sports car by todays standards. One was the king of the 90's straightaway, the other an up and coming prince of track day. Both born of noble Toyota blood, with equal claims to the throne, but within the new Supra beats a BMW heart, giving naysayers reason to contest it's ascension to the throne. Meaning only time will tell if the 2020 Toyota Supra will become the new king or become just another member of the Toyota Supra court. In closing; Neither car is "better" per se. Either car placed in the others timeline, would fall by the wayside. The only real comparisons that can be made, are reliability and popularity, and with both, only time will tell...
The 1994 Supra is the best hands down, I have an 89 Supra, but the MK IV is by far the best Supra ever and the 2JZGTE engine was one of the best engines ever made.

@@shogoracing4294 I made the huge mistake of buying a Mercedes R230 350 SL. It's a beautiful car and the body, chassis, engine and performance are incredible and almost as fast as the supra but the quality of components is deliberately garbage. And with such a complex design, any faulty component can give false errors. Endless money pit. I miss the reliability looks and practicality of the mkiv. I'm thinking of getting a GT86 which is what the new supra should have been but with a new 2JZ engine
I read somewhere that the earlier models of the Lexus SC has a Supra engine. One draw back: Most of these earlier models of the Lexus SC came with automatic transmission.
A pretty good automatic.. it was built as a luxury car first which for toyota meant automatic.. also few manuals ever sold. It’s a great daily driver with better interior for daily driving.
Exactly! Every BMW M for the last 30 years have been a total, unreliable disaster. From poorly designed engines to the brilliant (cough) and well executed SMG gearbox ...
Yep. Since the mid-90's BMW started going downhill. From that problematic V12 on the very early 8 series to the problematic ZF 5 speed to the V8 timing chain issues. These were the problems that plagued BMW from the mid-90's to the early 2000's.
Scotty, gotta say you're the man bro but the vids with the cam on you talking in your office and in the cars you're working on are the best. History of car brands are so-so
Great content.... THe Supra is legend... My ex wife had a new one in 1984 , 2 Tone Maroon Metallic... Automatic but it was a looker for sure back then... had super fat tires for that time, may be 225 mm wide . Coool content !
@rockn roll no, what I'm saying is that Toyota used to Supra name for publicity to spice up their "boring" image. It drives like a BMW because I own a 21 Supra.
To me the proportions look wrong. As the Z4 is a small car to begin with, trying to fit features of the Supra on it were always going to look out of place. The large headlights almost meet in the middle, a bulging body with curvy lines and intakes just doesn't suit the slimline chassis. No matter how you dress it up, it's not a Supra in my eyes. This was a wasted opportunity to bring back an epic car into the 21st century. Such a shame 😞
I just love the feeling of the 90's JDM design. Nothing beats that. Nice video and all but...I laughed so hard at the brake calipers spinning around in the animations hahahaha
Great video Scotty! I can understand the economics of the BMW partnership. It's a sad sign of the times, but we (old school gearheads) should be grateful for the development of 'any' new sports cars with ICE. And yes, automatics are quicker, but I still mourn the growing disappearance of 'row your own' gearboxes. I just traded my '18 Mustang GT (loaded with perf pack, 10sp, active exhaust, etc.) It had 2900 miles on it! I traded it for a new Tundra, but still have my lightly modded '12 Mustang GT with a manual. It's just more fun for me than my faster and better handling '18. But hey, at least I still have the greatness of the Coyote engine!
BMW or non-ICE vehicle? Don't make me choose. It is a far too easy choice not to have to work with BMW technicians ever again. (Note: Technician, not mechanic)
@@wburger2178 they're all "techs" these days - no matter the brand. Electric Supra or ICE bimmer/Supra? Easy choice for me - though I'm not interested in the car either way.
i know why they did it, but nothing is going to beat the 2JZ-GTE in my opinion. Reliable, sounds great and can handle a TON of power. What more could you want?
I own a 21 Supra in the Netherlands, with the 8 speed automatic and 340 hp, and its a great car! Over here the speed limit is 100 km during day time and 120 from 1900 on, and that’s only for the high ways. The others are 80 only , day and night. So , never driving on track I leave it like that, also everywhere else in Europe, except some routes in Germany , it’s the same regime. Thanks Scotty, for your interesting videos.
Opinions change as you learn more information, when I was young, I hated to drive in cars because it was boring. Now I love driving and riding in cars regardless of the make/model
Your most informative and educational video of the Supra's history, Scotty! Sure the current model has a BMW inline six and will have its haters but I may consider buying it someday
I've been telling Scotty that exact same thing for months now.. he gives an very good presentation that is easy to understand and keeps a person interested the entire time.
i'm on the fact that they went to BMW for an engine when Toyota is one of the most popular car companies in the world. your telling me they honestly couldn't put money into building their own engine.
I'm farely certain they didnt because it would have made the car too expensive on the back end. Having to sale it for 100k+ decreases the amount of customers so they cut the cost. They didn't want to make the same mistake twice and not reach target sales. I definetly feel you though, hopefully they implement something on the next gen, just doesnt feel like a pure Toyota if that's not what under the hood.
The 1jz was a Yamaha engine and Toyota used the Yamaha 1jz to make the 2jz. So yeah, they really haven’t made any performance engines without help or by themselves.
@@destruxandexploze2552 Only the 1JZ head was designed by Yamaha, the rest was by Toyota, including the 2JZ. Other performance engines like the LR used in LFA were mostly Toyota (Yamaha helped a bit too but Toyota still is huge and had the resources to make it) plus the new Supra is just completely BMW.
Scotty has said many times before that BMW makes great engines. And they've always been masters of the inline six. So it makes sense that he bought one.
white 82 supra here bro.. no wing though... I Really wanted that wing! fun car, I thought the world of it back then and. getting it used, was a dream come true.. the reality is though, that it was slow and those recaro lookalike seats were the worst torture for ur lower back ever designed by the mind of man.

How reliable will the b52 BMW engine will be? What do you 🤔 about the 2020 BMW m340 I? Is it a good buy ? since it has the same engine in the Toyota Supra?
I almost positive that the 2020 Supra won’t live up to its 25 year old predecessor. It’s only holding onto the name, reliability and power are still on the table. It won’t hit 2000hp, it’ll be far from it. Toyota not putting the effort in designing the same engine for a new era means it won’t be the same, bmw is good... but there’s no Toyota knowledge in it.
It's a shame they didn't offer the MKV with a manual gearbox option. Yes I'm aware of all the arguments in favor of a fast shifting positive feeling slushbox. It still (imo) takes a little s'more of the driver out of the experience of the drive.
I personally don't even like the body of the new Supra... don't like the overlapping Hood Fender line or the rear end ... No Targa Top so for me it's not just because it doesn't have a 2JZ engine for me it's the whole package
Planet Earth If you like your car then why keep it forever till it’s all used up and worth no money. Instead you could have sold it when it was still worth a lot. It’s smarter financially to sell the car you’ve owned for one year, to basically get your money back and put it towards your next car. Which can be the same model but with lower miles, since you like that model so much.
@@Big.W. You will still be paying several thousands even after trading in a used vehicle. If you get a toyota or a lexus and hit half a million you're literally saving money. Because of that it doesn't matter if the vehicle is worth nothing. The very fact that you haven't payed a penny for any vehicle during that time gives you a massive profit over trading in when the vehicle has lower mileage. During such mileage (500k) how many trade ins would you have done in your book? 5, 6, 7? Multiply that by the additional amount of what you'll pay during the trade in (plus taxes, processing fees, and bunch of other nonsense). Keeping a high mileage vehicle just saved you 10-20 grand, if not more. In addition when you constantly switch models, especially in the used market, you'll run into issues due to changes and inconsistencies. Reliability, dealerships and other stuff that'll cost you money, time, energy and needless stress due to high variation in brand, make, and technology difference, rather than sticking with that one vehicle that you calibrated around and set up your maintenance and finances for.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully the guy/gal you sold it to is taking good care of it. Btw, what kind of car(s) do you own these days?
Mine was an FC RX7...
@@shogoracing4294 I made the huge mistake of buying a Mercedes R230 350 SL. It's a beautiful car and the body, chassis, engine and performance are incredible and almost as fast as the supra but the quality of components is deliberately garbage. They just crumble in your hands. Electrical connectors, small motors and sensors etc. Mechanical mounts made from cheap rubber. And with such a complex design, any faulty component can give false errors. Endless money pit. I miss the reliability looks and practicality of the mkiv. I'm thinking of getting a GT86 which is what the new supra should have been but with a new 2JZ engine
@@MrMeoow91 Great car! I liked the Mitsubishi 3000 GT and Nissan 300 ZX too . That era had some incredible cars!!!
But you didnt regret selling mk1-mk3?
Scotty... Keep these documentaries coming, they’re great!👍🏻
I guess he killed his new channel that he was putting these on. I dont think he gave it enough time.
Yea it came with a 2jzge(non turbo) engine.
When was the last time BMW and reliability coexisted?
Before Hitler started Barbarossa in 1941, then it all went downhill.
Exactly! Every BMW M for the last 30 years have been a total, unreliable disaster. From poorly designed engines to the brilliant (cough) and well executed SMG gearbox ...
Never
Never. BMW is good before 100.000 miles. After is 💩
History of car brands are so-so
Thank you scotty I always wanted you to make this video.
Great content.... THe Supra is legend... My ex wife had a new one in 1984 , 2 Tone Maroon Metallic... Automatic but it was a looker for sure back then... had super fat tires for that time, may be 225 mm wide . Coool content !
I owned 4 BMW with straight sixes and boy can they build engines, but the supra legacy is not something that you just pass on.
2JZ is second to none.
Yes the engine internals are reliable ,it's all the plastic external parts that tend to fail.
Toyota used the Supra name mainly for publicity to spice up their brand. The car feels and drives like a BMW.
@rockn roll no, what I'm saying is that Toyota used to Supra name for publicity to spice up their "boring" image. It drives like a BMW because I own a 21 Supra.
@rockn roll it should drive like a BMW because the car is pretty much engineered by BMW, and tuned by Toyota with bmw parts.
This is the type of content i like to see on youtube, thank you scotty!
Denesh Bm same!!!!
Scotty you’re the best mechanic in the world man.
i know why they did it, but nothing is going to beat the 2JZ-GTE in my opinion. Reliable, sounds great and can handle a TON of power. What more could you want?
Just a BBW in the passenger seat
The B58 is underrated , it makes more than the advertised 335 hp . Tuners found that it was making more than 335 at the wheels on the dyno.
1994 stands tall in history, that's my choice.
I thought the surpa came out in '93
@@shawnsta7779 nope
Tall as in '94 Celica
'94 was also the first year of the Gen 3 Integra.
@@shawnsta7779 Yes this 4th generation came out in 1993 and 1st gen was 1978.
Thanks Scotty, for your interesting videos.
great presentation Scotty, bravo
I enjoyed the review of the Toyota Supra and the summary of the history of the Supra. Thank and keep up the productions of these videos.
How is it that you’re such a fan of the new Supra after you trashed it months ago for being a low quality BMW?!
Opinions change as you learn more information, when I was young, I hated to drive in cars because it was boring. Now I love driving and riding in cars regardless of the make/model
Sponsorships...
Supra MK4 is my dream car. I want one so bad they look really good.
Afternoon Scotty!

Great documentary Scotty! Can u do one on the legendary G35!
Or the 37?!
Don’t be stupid
legendary? Bit of overkill.

Your most informative and educational video of the Supra's history, Scotty! Sure the current model has a BMW inline six and will have its haters but I may consider buying it someday

Scott your presentation is excellent.
You should be teaching this things in a University. Many professors don't have this knowledge.👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
I've been telling Scotty that exact same thing for months now.. he gives an very good presentation that is easy to understand and keeps a person interested the entire time.
He is teaching these things, Only without the pay cut and without demanding tuition.
Don't buy a car just because it became famous in a movie. It might be a great car but there are other great cars that don't have movie star prices.
Toyota: We don’t make i6 engines any more, so we needed to partner up with BMW
Lexus (also Toyota): Am I a joke to you?
they should put a LFA engine for the mk5...XD
They never did make any of those.
For Mr. Toyoda, to be a Master Driver was a matter of life and death! Good video!
i'm on the fact that they went to BMW for an engine when Toyota is one of the most popular car companies in the world. your telling me they honestly couldn't put money into building their own engine.
I'm farely certain they didnt because it would have made the car too expensive on the back end. Having to sale it for 100k+ decreases the amount of customers so they cut the cost. They didn't want to make the same mistake twice and not reach target sales.
I definetly feel you though, hopefully they implement something on the next gen, just doesnt feel like a pure Toyota if that's not what under the hood.
momo97110 the car would have costed 50k if Toyota designed it themselves
The 1jz was a Yamaha engine and Toyota used the Yamaha 1jz to make the 2jz. So yeah, they really haven’t made any performance engines without help or by themselves.
@@destruxandexploze2552 you can't tell people that...its like half these people going so hard for the car really dont know much about it
@@destruxandexploze2552 Only the 1JZ head was designed by Yamaha, the rest was by Toyota, including the 2JZ. Other performance engines like the LR used in LFA were mostly Toyota (Yamaha helped a bit too but Toyota still is huge and had the resources to make it) plus the new Supra is just completely BMW.
The short documentaries are great Scotty thank you
I... loved this video? So calm in this video and I enjoyed hearing all you had to say it was pleasant 😁

Scotty: why I’ll die before I buy a bmw
Toyota: * releases new supra with bmw engine
Scotty: where do I preorder?

Scotty: you son of a bitxh, I'm in
Scotty has said many times before that BMW makes great engines. And they've always been masters of the inline six. So it makes sense that he bought one.
Love the documentary style on this production. Can't wait til the next one....
What happened to the other channel? I don't see any videos showing up there any more.
If the old supra is worth more than the new one, wouldn't it make sense to just put the old one back in production again?
Impossible to do for several reasons
94 supra ❤️🙏🏻❤️
I had a 91 Celica gts when i was 18 and I drove the tires off that thing . It handled better than any car I have had since.
The original Supra is made by Toyota.
The 2020 Supra is a BMW Z 4 platform, so is not a real Toyota.
Any Supra enthusiast knows this
@@EmSeeMAC That weak line is getting old.

My 2nd car after my Tercel was a rusty maroon '85 Supra. This brought back a lot of memories! Thanks Scotty!
white 82 supra here bro.. no wing though... I Really wanted that wing! fun car, I thought the world of it back then and. getting it used, was a dream come true.. the reality is though, that it was slow and those recaro lookalike seats were the worst torture for ur lower back ever designed by the mind of man.

Great video. There’s no doubt the new one is a great car as far as performance and looks goes but everyone should stop calling it a “Supra”.
Exactly it may be an okay BMW sports car but I'd never consider this a true Supra
It is accept it
This video is very well done. Deserves a like.
If you need to revive Toyota Supra !! Make Toyota engine not a BMW !! ...
I like these types of video s
Hope you are having a great day Scotty. I vote the 1994 Toyota Supra!
How reliable will the b52 BMW engine will be? What do you 🤔 about the 2020 BMW m340 I? Is it a good buy ? since it has the same engine in the Toyota Supra?
94 always the best year
You make the best car videos 😁
I almost positive that the 2020 Supra won’t live up to its 25 year old predecessor. It’s only holding onto the name, reliability and power are still on the table. It won’t hit 2000hp, it’ll be far from it. Toyota not putting the effort in designing the same engine for a new era means it won’t be the same, bmw is good... but there’s no Toyota knowledge in it.
Just stop
Yup !
«Swif7 - All for me» plays at the end.
It's a shame they didn't offer the MKV with a manual gearbox option. Yes I'm aware of all the arguments in favor of a fast shifting positive feeling slushbox. It still (imo) takes a little s'more of the driver out of the experience of the drive.
True the manual can give you an extreme leverage in racing development over automatic transmission
They will in coming years, watch.
@@N20Joe and now it is here.
I swear so many are sleeping on the new B58.
Toyota already had 2jz engine molds. Make your own engines Toyota!
I agree, I think everyone would have been fine with an updated 2jz in that new supra body.
I personally don't even like the body of the new Supra... don't like the overlapping Hood Fender line or the rear end ... No Targa Top so for me it's not just because it doesn't have a 2JZ engine for me it's the whole package
You said HAD ,they most likely don't have them anymore, if they did they probably would of used them.
Scotty, you are the best! Regards from Romania!
Yeah, the B58 is an untapped beast!!
I tapped it and it still ain’t a beast 😂
How does Scotty have an access to all these high-quality videos? Amazing.
I'm 30 now looking for a car to last me until retirement, I hope Scotty will sell me his celica
I never understood why do people hoard their car until it’s worth nothing when they could’ve sold it earlier while it was still valuable.
Funny!
Lol! 🤣
