I’ve said it before I’d love all customers to watch and understand some of these videos so they know not all of us tradesmen are out to rip them off and the little extra bits we have to do to do a proper job are important.
This video is amazing. As a bathroom fitter there are so many great carpentry tips in this video that have helped. Pretty much every bathroom we fit now has a concealed unit and I hate this part of the job. Making the wooden pattres with the centre line is so obvious now you’ve shown it, and has probably saved me hours of work on each job since.
Really enjoy your lively narrative. The terms and jargon r not what I would hear here in California, but it is a delight to hear Robin explain things. A true craftsman!!
That copper work is a work of art!!! If only our plumber was like this. Each time that I’d encourage him to do some tidy work, he’d say it’s all going to be hidden. Really infuriated me but was stuck with him contracting it. Other thing he’d say is, clients are getting all these fancy ideas for TH-cam and they don’t know what the real world worksmanship is! 🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️😫

That's a new safety feature called a 'valve leak indicator'. Emits an audible bang for the hard of hearing along with a blue flash & loss of power to indicate there's a problem 😆
Top job Robin as always. You did the best you could with those cables. Can't believe the electric designer put sockets in the same compartment. RCCB were added to improve safety surely, not to compensate for compromised designs (Just a personal view)
To be a joiner you must know your own trade, and every other trade, You are expected to make it easier for everyone else to do their job, then know how to cover up, or make other trades bad work look good. To be a plumber you need to know ; sh1t flows downhill, payday is Thursday, Bricklayer; one on top of two Electrician; difference between blue, brown and green, Jobs not done until you've smashed everything within 12" of a wire or backbox Plasterer; throw the mud and blame the joiner.
How would you deal with making access for service to, or replacement of the shower valve when, for example, any plastic components on the control levers wear? My father made a removable access panel on the opposite side of the wall so the the entire valve and any plumbing could be replaced without the need to damage the tiling in the bathroom.
How do you get to these valves when they go wrong? I’ve had so many people as me to come and look at drips coming through the ceiling from them or they seize up due to the hard water, the look on peoples face when you tell them you have to remove tiles and they can’t get replacements 😲. I just like sticking to room side valves it makes life so much easier when they need changing.
Great video. Would you chop into a brick wall to install this shower valve if it was going on an external wall? I guess if 5he wall was 300mm solid brick would be OK, if it was modern build with block, insulation etc would you/could you buy putting a little lintel in? Not sure what the regs are on that? A better solution would probably be to build a stud wall directly in front of the block wall and install the mixer and pipes etc in that. You would lose 100mm or so of the room, but it would make installation much easier and avoid chopping the masonry wall to pieces.
Lovely job, Can I ask, was that open water pipe with the speedfit connector on, facing upwards, protected from the holes you drilled in the stud above it?
1. You can literally put an electrical supply under water. It’s just dependant on Ip ratings 2. Your entire house has water pipes and cables running right next to each other. 3. If something is leaking - it’s broken. You can account for this to a degree, but it shouldn’t break. If it’s broken then you will get damage but you can’t design and build a house/building on the basis that it’s going to break/leak or you’d have to build a swimming pool to put your house in.
I’m not a sparky and any sparky please correct me if I’m wrong, but I think they are in the correct zones as the run vertical from the socket positions and are outside of a special location.pretty sure it all has to be RCD protected, I’ve seen it where the back of a concealed shower valve was touching the back of a drywall box of a light switch (back to back in stud) I asked both sparky and plumber if it was ok and they didn’t bat an eyelid 😂😂😂

what was the drill bit you were using on this vid robin? I first fixed a bathroom a while back with all concealed valves. the bath filler (not tap strangely enough) i had to get absolutely bang on for the thickness of the tiles etc it was that much of a stupid design. litterally near enough mm perfect. that was a right headache
Never seen one of those flash things. Mostly I fit what we call a flick mixer. A noggin in the back and done. Some still want taps. Interesting to see all the pipes going everywhere in the walls that will be sealed in. I can remember when shower pipes were the only concealed pipes but you had to have an access panel. Also horizontal cables. When I left that was a no no. Cables were in line above or below the plug or switch. You could cut across to a hard wired stove from the control switch but that was about it. Going horizontal saves time and cable but not such a good job. The old way was so logical and you knew where everything was. Here we do the same pipes and cables in any direction with no logic. You are trying to fit something on a wall and never know what you will hit.

This is my own framing square that I am producing, it is stainless steel 3mm thick and is marked for metric roof construction, the square will be accompanied by an app with calculators and instructions for traditional roof construction
This is the ideal situation shown here, in real life the walls are in and boarded, plumber comes along to fit the valve, holes and boards removed every where. Plumber doesn't know anything about the tile work or shower boards going in. Unfortunately it's all down to planning the job correctly and doing things at right stages. Everything Is fine in this job as Everything seems to be new, but what about when bathrooms are getting overhauled and renovated. Also there's just as much work goes into the fitting of the wall plate elbows for the outlets. There's no way in the UK this would happen in real life, a joiner doing what's he's done. They are to busy to worry about doing something like this. Unless they are on day rate and not bothered.
also out of interest do you class yourself as a carpenter or a joiner? up here in south shields there are a few joiners but no carpenters. seems its not a word used up here. i might be missing a trick here.
Hi Paul, I am a Carpenter and joiner, so i know bench joinery and all site carpentry, when I served my apprenticeship we studied both disciplines, I know lots of my carpenter friends who from the north of the UK are referred to as Joiners!!! it's a regional thing!! in the south we are chippies!!
You spent all that time talking about how limited the depth range is on the valve then glossed over the backplate elbow. Usually have to guess your finished tile depth within 1-2mm with those, would have loved to see some tips for that
Sometimes you have to just work it out for yourself, or hire a professional. All that good advice and you still want more? He gives away all the "trade secrets" he knows, now you want him to read the instructions and compensate for your lack of common sense? Pro tip for all you budding diyers out there; if you can't build an Ikea wardrobe without making a single mistake; don't attempt fitting your own bathroom!

The polite thing to do is to ask for a follow up video or advice on where to find help with more details on the area not covered.
For the money then cross water mixers are they really should be easier to fit. They need to be easier to level and an easier way to get the correct depth. The mixers would be better with a soldered connection option well rather than relying on a compression connection inside a finished wall
i hope the customer is getting a good discount on all your time wasting on the job as it clearly shows they are paying for your upload time and comentry . hell i can't belive you get away with charging customers for you talking and messing about !
I believe in sharing knowledge and helping others and I live my life by this mantra. My customers and clients are fabulous people that I have been working with in some cases for decades, I do all my work on a price and not by the day or hour, I also make photographic records and video for my clients for their future reference. It takes no extra time and I think that filming real life work situations for sharing knowledge is the best way
Come the end of the job the client has photos/videos of various stages of the work that has been carried about by someone in their home...the work and extra video time taken all done on the price agreed by the client and tips, experience and knowledge passed on. Whats not to like, perfect!
It must take time from the job, but of course there would be an understanding with the customer in advance, or Robin would lose work. One advantage to the customer is that someone who films their work and makes it public, is holding themselves accountable - they are putting their standards up to be judged by the customer themselves, and thousands of other people with a lot of collective experience. It's the ultimate quality control.
@@ironpirate8 Sadly this shows an incompetent plumber (PRV discharge pipework) and incompetent electrician (cables out of prescribed zones and insufficient cable support). Not a good advert!
Great video. Looks like a good quality job. But I was a bit surprised to see and open ended pipe with you drilling a hole on top of it. Shower valves are delicate and can't have dust going in it. You can tell the plumber is good for using copper.… real plumber. But the rest is all plastic. Also I’m not sure about having wires behind a shower valve 🤔. I would have taken either the wires or the valve across. And I would have had the valve closer to the shower head. Forget having to walk away from the shower head/water outlet to change temperature then having to go back to check if its suitable.. but idk the design the customer wanted. But nice neat work and you are certainly a great carpenter ☺️.
That pipework deserves an award. I haven't seen pipework like that since trade school.

Electrical cables and water pipes run along every building allthe time and they all get signed off.
