    Hey Gamesfromscratch, the Layer Paint addon for Blender recently went free and open source. It brings a Substance Painter-like experience to Blender. I'd love to see a video on it.

    Seeing all these nice new texture painting programs really makes me want to see blender finally improve it's texture painting support. I've been spoiled by it's controls, workflow and flexability and I find myself getting annoyed at other software (especially substance painter) that does things like camera controlls way differently.

  • @Elwaves2925
    @Elwaves2925 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I'm definitely going to try this out. I have a use for software like this but nowhere near enough to justify paying for it and I don't need all the fancy features. So free is ideal and it seems pretty simple to use. Cheers for highlighting it.

  • @thebelugaking

    I just tested this program under wine, it does work however it does come with some drawbacks with the wine UI such as the file browser for example, and files may not load up properly, but the software itself is perfectly useable.

    Interesting, I wonder how this stacks up against Armorpaint and Mixer.

    • @manasnagelia
      @manasnagelia 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah, I wonder. Mixer is not really a direct alternative to Substance Painter, so my question is which is better, Armorpaint or Agama Materials. I'll try both out and see

      @@manasnagelia Mac user too here, sometimes the backwardness of the Substance suite gets over my nerves. Do you know of anything similar more akin to this Agama material style? Benefits I see on this one: both designer+painter in one shot. Can drive many things via another map, example, normal map intensity or blending modes have an input too (on designer is not that straight forward). Conditionals? On designer gotta go inside weird FX-Maps or weird functions. Using mesh Normals inside your node tree? Good luck with that, has to be pre-baked for the most part, etc

    Great video. I was wondering if there are any vector-based painting 3D texturing programs?
    I use ClipStudio Paint for painting, which gives me a lot of control of the brushes and can also use vector layers. But since it's a 2D canvas, seam edges show up. I can try to clean up the edges in Blender, but it doesn't look as nice.

    If substance were to be started from scratch, I believe it should approach more this same mindset. I don’t get why so many things on Designer are so backwards, doing conditionals is through these functions nodes, then there’s these FX-Maps. Pixel Processors are the closest to a reasonable Pixel Shader but the syntax and way to go about it is a whole lot different to any node based shader tool.
    I like that the material can have embedded ways to react to mesh attributes from the get go without having to pre-bake them every single time.

    Now that we are getting multiple free alternatives, I wonder if Substance Designer and Painter are going to get cheaper.

    • @gamefromscratch
      @gamefromscratch  3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      To be honest, the vast majority of their customers don't give a damn about the pricetag of Substance... it represents like 2 hours of employee pay and is easy to justify. Tools like this more appeal to the amateur/indie market. The best result you might see is the indie version on Steam getting a slight price reduction, but I doubt that happens anytime soon.

      @DustinM83 The sad part about this is not that they will not lower their prices, its that even if they increase their prices people will continue to use them (Paid and pirated). I can't count how many people I have met over the years that use pirated software and will NOT go anywhere near anything that is legally free. Even though the free alternatives can do everything the "big guys" can do. And sometimes they even do it better.
      I'm a li'bit of an artist and a newbie game developer. Aside from affinity designer (one time fee of $50 and own forever), every tool I use is free. I will NOT pirate anything. I'd hate it if anyone pirated something I made. I even share videos like this one (Free alternatives) on the game dev discord I'm a part of and we still have a massive problem with pirates.
