good idea, but automatic transmission will need the pump running at 750 rpm to make everything ready to shift, doing this will cause to feel hard shift at beginning
Not quite sure what you are trying to demonstrate here Damien? Is there a torque converter still in the system? I understood that to convert any auto trans for electric drive motor you need hydraulic pressure via a torque converter or a separate electric hydraulic pump that keeps normal pressure in the trans. I have a 1993 XJ40 4.0L Jag I am looking to convert and it has an electronic ZF 4 speed auto. It seems that if I run a torque converter I must have the main electric motor idling at about 400 RPM. If I do this I can also run altenator, air conditioner and power steering via an adaptor plate on the front of a motor with a double shaft. Any comments please?
I wonder if anyone else has done a electric to auto gearbox setup. Some older cars are hard or impossible to find with a manual gearbox and not everyone can afford a motor powerful enough not to need a gearbox.
EV West used a powerglide in their Pikes Peak BMW initially. I'm thinking of doing it in a mustang build just for faster shifts. There's nothing wrong with using the gears of an auto, you just dont need the torque converter. The hard part is keeping line pressure at a stop. You have to idle the motor or use an external pump.
Surely a major downside is that in use the motor would have to spin up, even when the throttle is released? Otherwise the transmission fluid pump will stop when off the throttle going down hills, with the internals still spinning.
@@Acceler2 Yes that could be done at the expense of range, which would already be hit by running through a slush box. The cons would seem to greatly outweigh the pros,
good day, I am wonder if you have a torque converter installed? I have googled and an actuator was suggested to keep the torque converter running like ICE, or else the wear and tare the cost automatic transmission life span. I would like to know how you deal with the problem? because I am planning on doing an EV conversion on my W123 automatic transmission also.
Hi from Mexico !!! ... I have a question... What is the cost difference between doing an ev conversion with the automatic transmission and doing it with a manual transmission?
Your setup is a good way to smoke the clutches in the transmission. The pump has to be running when you put it in gear in a real car, which means the electric motor has to be "idling"
hi i am working on a track car and currently i am having a problem with what type of gearbox i should use, can i know what type of gearbox setup is that? it would be great.
You can find information about the motor used (it's a forklift motor) in the other videos. But if you watch the newer videos, there are better options now than using an forklift motor :)
I think the potential is out there for this project. So this is the challenge I see; how do you have an electric motor that can idle like a regular gas automatic? Regardless of efficiency loss; this means more of the original parts can be used on the project. Indeed, the solution I would think is to have a two brushless motor setup. When the vehicle is "on.." and electric motor that only idles charges the steering pump, torque converter, water pump, and air conditioning unit. Also, energy could be required to heat the transmission to normal operating temperature. When the vehicle is selected in "drive" a separate motor can take over to spin up to higher rpm's. In other words, mimic the gas engine as close as possible using current without having the dual motor assembly any larger than the gas engine itself. Range and effecieny might be cut be half, but building time/labor costs could be cut much lower? Perhaps..
If the motor had a tail shaft, a pulley system could be attached to run the power steering, A/C and 12v charging system. I’m aware that electric alternatives exist, but I would like to think that this would potentially work.
Both ways take extra battery power to run the extras, vs just the motor to drive. But if you use a pulley system to run the power steering system it would only work when in motion, not at idle or a stop.
Hi I am interested into changing my v6 diesel with electric motor and I have a zf gear box with quattro. Can you give me a contact to further discuss this?
Why are you using the transmission? Supposedly there are not needed transmissions when you are working with electric motors, because they run at a pretty good torque even at 8000 rpm
AC's yes....DC are rather like 3,5-4Krpm but what he has done space-wise is strange...that is never gonna work with that torque...the shaft would have to be cutted/shortened
Efficiency reasons. Sure motors make the most torque at lowest RPM but they also draw TONS of current = inefficient = dead battery after a 1/4 mile. Efficiency of DC motors happens PAST peak power (half of no load speed). This is going to sound really counter intuitive but if you have a big enough motor controller you would get max performance (worst mileage) in 5th gear.
I think its better even though electric motors have instant torque and spin 20,000 rpm with a good power band. Let's say if you have .5:1 gear ratio that double the torque and final gear could be 1:1 like normal. You wouldn't lose too much power though the transmission because you don't have a torque converter
hello my friend, first of all i want to congratulate you and i say you than your work is interesting. i want to ask you about the aluminum plate than it links the electric engine with with transmission. How do you do about it????? Thank you and regards
Surely he's using a 'lock up' torque converter which has a nice smooth power uptake then no slipping when in lock up mode, effectively giving direct mechanical drive.
I know nothing about electric cars but now I'm getting it...😏....throttle or accelerator is connected to the controller/inverter😏😏😏...brain works..…whats that thing the motor is connected to?transmission?
hello, I want to convert my car to the electric motor, how much can be cost? how can do for obtein the certification for driving on the road? my car is Mercedes 300se 1988 automatic gearbox. Can i obtein the same power? ;)
Speed. The torque and power curve of a electric motor is relatively a square wave but for max speed say like cruising at higher free way speeds it would be more practical to have a few gears to shift through.
Wanting to electric convert my mazda 6 4wd wagon, looking into this right now and will charge it with my solar system , well thats the plan haha - now only to invest in the "range" battery system
This, is the first of your videos that I've ever seen, … so, … I got halfway thru the video & though to myself, ….. WHAT, ….. is the purpose of this test? ….. there is NO LOAD, (ie: … the car), ….. I suppose, (not seeing any of your prior videos), this was just a bench test to see if it would work at all. ….. I then thought, an engine, (be it petrol/diesel or electric), is an engine, it is "meant", to turn gearboxes to drive the vehicle. Would you be doing such a bench test with a petrol or diesel engine? ….. I don't think you would. Or as the title says "Controller", ….. I think you were testing it all, motor-controller & gearbox together. ….. I would have tested it in the car/vehicle, ….. if there was a problem, it would have shown itself there & not on a bench. GREAT video, … I love watching guys like you testing things because it saves me having to do it. ….. Thanks Mate...…….
Todo está bien MENOS las baterías, debes instalar un dínamo/generador cómo la represa Huber, para mover al motor eléctrico y a su vez mover el Generador, entiendes, entonces tendrás energía infinita, adiós petróleo y baterías
How would bench testing give you any idea of the under load amperage? And why does it decrease RPMs before shifting? Do you have a torque converter in there?
I can't wait for a continuation of the gearbox controller project :)

Oil pump is inside the transmission not in the torque converter.
The clue to what he is demonstrating is in the video title.

For those cases you can consider the Lexus GS450h or GS300h gearbox. There are videos about those on this channel as well.

Well you can use very low RPM on the electric motor 1000RPM at 60mph with a different diff, less noise.
