Calathea is a plant, originated from the tropical forests of South America , Prayer plant, because they fold their leaves at night, just like they are praying to Almighty God, as humans do by folding their hands. It is found beneath the big tall trees of the rainforests. Therefore gets enough bright indirect light in the daytime and pitch dark condition at the night.This type of lighting triggers the closing and opening movement of Calathea leaves.
Why do calathea leaves close at night?
During the daytime, there is an ample amount of bright indirect sunlight. Therefore, the Calathea plant keeps its leaves open, so that it can carry out photosynthesis. But at night, when there is no light, the plant folds its leaves up.
Reasons for Calathea Not Closing at Night
The most common reason for which your Calathea is not closing at night is that, your plant is getting too much light. It is not getting a completely dark condition at night, which is very much essential for the closing of Calathea leaves.An artificial source of light is continuously penetrating the leaves of your plant and hampering its diurnal cycle. Apart from the lighting issues, watering problems and pest infestation might also cause the Calathea leaves not to move at night.
Almost all Calatheas close at night
Yes, almost all known Calathea species close their leaves at night. There might be some variation in the movement of the leaves of different species, but there is always a movement is there in response to light

Why calathea got brown tips?
Most of the time it is due to tap water quality
Tap water contains salts, chlorine, minerals and fluoride - all of which can build up in the soil of your plant causing the tips of the leaves to burn, turn brown, and curl up.
Calathea is a houseplant that really purifies the air, so it is a true eye-catcher in every interior that also makes a contribution to a better and healthier indoor climate. ... Calathea is also special for another reason: it closes its leaves at night and opens them again in the morning!

What you said is all correct but yiu are contradicting your statement about light there closing cycle its very impotant for it to have darkness no garden lights. Rest all yiu said is perfect, especially peblec techniques

Thanks , I have told this in video clearly that their night closing cycle is very important, because Calathea leaves move in nights due to a phenomenon called nyctinasty, which occurs when the plant reacts to changes in light levels to enable better photosynthesis during daylight. for better health of calatheas this phenomenon is necessary. I try to keep my plants as they grow in their natural environment.

Can leaves of a big Calathea Medalliion plant be cleaned with soft cloth?I have observed that when i clean it gently with a moist cloth the leaves start curling from sides & closing .
Also when i water it some leaves close.
I have bought it readymade in a 10 inch pot &it is in a well drained garden soil .We live in Pune.Could you pls guide.

Don’t clean with cloth ,some plants with beautiful leaves including calathea don’t like human touch . Instead wash their leaves with pipe or sprayer. Calatheas don’t like temperature below 18 degrees, so you are in area like that move your calatheas in little more sunny place . Almost all the calatheas and Maranta plants fold their leaves during night that’s why they are known as prayer plants . If you don't see this movement, but your plant is otherwise healthy, the reason can be your plant getting too much light. Just think of the plants in their natural environment and how dark the night gets.

it is not possible to propagate Calathea plants from stem or leaf cuttings. Calathea stem cuttings simply do not contain the correct plant tissue to grow new roots and develop into a separate plant.so as leaves , though if you spray some root hormone on leaves , root will come but it will not turn into full plant

Hi Aparna add some micronutrient/ seaweed in it , to prevent overdosing use granular form . And top your plant with any kind of mulch , dried leaves , grass shavings or moss grass .it will retain moisture as well as prevent overwatering too .
