    I'm glad you mentioned people trying to race you.
    I get that quite often, usually from some giant Ford F-150. They also seem to enjoy tailgating me. I just throw hairdryers at them til they go away.

    Hi there, been enjoying your vids since you got the MX-5, thank you for giving me some insight and inspiration while I saved. Finally joined the ranks of ownership yesterday with a black 2008 sport hardtop, very much looking forward to planning road trips in the near future. Keep it up!

    Have owned MX5s for the last 20 years, all as my daily drivers. Two NAs, one NB and now have a 2012 NC Sport Black. Best cars in the world. I love the MX5 wave but do find it is mainly NAs and NBs that wave back. Never been bothered about the road noise. Did a 450 mile trip up to Yorkshire with the roof down on my last NB and all was fine...did have to have the stereo cranked up a bit. Great video and thank you.

    I had mine for a year and bought new tyres that grip well, wet or dry. I fitted sport shocks and Eibach pro-kit springs. It's great to drive and after 10,000 miles no oil consumed.

    I agree with you about the road noise, it's quite noisy even in the retractable hardtop model, and the wet handling. As I used mine as a daily for a while I resorted to all season tyres which helped a bit. However my biggest complaint is the three quarter view when reversible or emerging from a junction that's not at right angles!
    I don't have the Bilsteins, mines a Kendo, so I guess the ride might be a bit softer, but that makes it comfortable for a longer trip.
    Keep the videos coming, enjoyable and informative.

    I’ve had my NC since new (early 2007). It is my daily and only car so it gets wet and dinged in car parks but it is the most satisfying car I’ve owned. Mine is a stock 2 ltr and it’s economical for both fuel and maintenance with the single exception being a non functional power hardtop so it is a full time coupe now much to my disappointment. I hope to find an affordable fix.I find myself still smiling going for milk even after 13 years. I like your vids, keep ‘em coming.

    Hi. Had an mx5 mk2.5 and recently moved to a mk3 Niseko hard top. As much as I love 2 seater convertibles this has to be the noisiest I have owned. Had a Z4, MR2 mk3, Audi TT and Mg,s but this has by far the Loudest cabin noise. I fitted a double din Bluetooth and people can’t hear me even with the roof up. I agree with the spin in the wet, when I originally bought this it was a bit wet and the back end shifted coming onto a roundabout. Mine had a leak in the passenger footwell but thanks to the forums I found this is common and replaced a small grommet under the wipers and now it’s bone dry. Gotta live with all the little things to appreciate the few days of sunshine in the country and enjoy the B-road experience. In my opinion nothing beats a drive through the highlands with the sun shining and the roof down. Keep the vids coming.

    Absolute legend. Had mine for about 4 months, same colour. Love it except for the water leak from the drain hole. Might change them out for bigger ones. Otherwise the car is very very capable on the road.

    Hi Dom, great video! Fully agree that the boot size is not a limitation: my wife & I have driven to France and Italy and we had plenty of room for the luggage we needed. We use it regularly for our weekly shop - there's plenty of room to spare. Ours has air conditioning but I only use it to clear condensation inside or if stuck in traffic in high summer. Agree about top down+windows down - I usually don't put up the windbreak either - then it's really "wind in your hair" motoring. I just wish I had more hair! :-D I like your wheels - what diameter/width/offset are they? Mine is also tail happy in the wet - I've had a few 'moments' so take it easier now. Wheel alignment is important - I just found out that I had multiple flats worn on the rear tyres, so have had an alignment and new tyres. Feel is better overall now. (2009 NC FL Sport in True Red with BBK sport exhaust). I fitted an ILMotorsport short throw gear lever - feel is precise like a surgeon's scalpel now. I had a Pioneer AVIC-F88DAB Naviceiver with CD/USB/SD Card/DAB radio fitted instead of the Bose system - much improved audio and all my music stored as .FLAC on an SD Card. Smug feeling knowing that we NC owners have loads more storage than an ND. I regard my NCFL as a small Grand Tourer in the old sense - quite refined and everyday driveable but a hoot when you put your foot down on the twisties. I also fitted the ILMotorsport combined LED DRL/Foglights by Vinstar. I hate having Xenon headlights on when not dark, so the bright LED daylight running lights are just what I wanted. The previous owner always drove with foglights on, but here it's illegal, strictly speaking. Most other lights are now LEDs including boot, cabin and reverse lamp - they make a big difference. Mods I'm thinking about: coilovers, 18" alloys, big brake kit, but she's very driveable and probably more comfortable without these.
    I'm enjoying your content! Please keep up the good work! All the best, Rob in Switzerland

    Great video. I've been following along and making some of the same mods (put the jass seat rails in a few weeks back, really helped me (being 6'2) so thanks for the inspiration). For future project ideas I'd recommend replacing the coolant tank and also upgrading the steering wheel, just fitted one from royal steering wheels this evening, a huge improvement if you ask me! Keep up the good work, I look forward to seeing more videos!

    I looked at loads of NC cars before I purchased my 07 Z Sport and quite a few had rust at the base of the steel divider between the window glass and the triangular section ahead of it. It’s a bit of a water/gunk trap. Mine was rust free so I ran a small bead of black silicone along the edge at the top of the door panel to stop the water sitting there and hopefully preserve it. I masked off the area around it before application to try and keep it looking tidy, but carefully removed it before the silicone set.
    I love NC’s and not much annoys me about my car but there are a few things:
    1. No cruise control.
    2. The interior plastics scratch way too easily.
    3. I keep nudging the window switches as I rest my hand between gear shifts. Surely there’s a gap in the market for a rubber or moulded silicone or 3D printed insert to prevent this from happening?

    Great video! I own the 1.8 version and I agree in everything you said! (I have owned mine for half a year).
    I use mine as a daily drive and it is fantastic!
    Cons I found... There is a tiny leak to the boot when it rains a lot or I wash the car (not coming from the drain holes) and I have a couple of weird noises: one metallic clonk noise when starting the car and another metallic squicky noise when driving....
    Appart from that , fantastics car! Keep it up!

    • @ryanthompson2893
      @ryanthompson2893 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check the starter motor and check your belt tension. Loose belts may squeal when you get on the engine a little but not at idle and a bad starter may clunk for some reason (it’s impossible to know without tearing apart the starter, actually this is all a guess.) You may also just have a bad wheel bearing and if that’s the case the stop driving it immediately and get it fixed. Bad wheel bearings can go from a tiny bit of play to catastrophic in seconds.

    Mazda have done well to make a very usable little sports car and improve on it over time. I have owned a couple of other small rear wheel drive cars and I can relate to a few things in this video. Still trying to figure out what my next car will be but the NC Mx5 is in the running. It's interesting what you say about being noticable - I found in both sports cars I owned people take more notice which is not always a positive thing. On the road boy racers try to race you and when you're sat parked you tend to get the older curtain twitcher brigade wondering what this young person in their fancy car is up to! Just something you have to live with I guess!

Gutted and caged it with miatacage rollcage, solid mount Miatacage hard top, omp race seats, omp race belts, fire suppression, kill switch, Olin coilover suspension, grip disc brakes and hard lines, Cusco limited slip diff, act clutch, racing beat resonated midpipe and ISR muffler delete tail pipe, enkei wheels with hancook rs4s. Current 2.0L makes great power even after 156k miles on the clock. Will likely Ls or lfx swap it next year. I would recommend it for anyone looking to do a first track car. Car really handles well on track!

    Great video and overall a great series of videos on your Mx-5 adventures. I love my Mx-5 Sport-Tech, it's a 2010, Mk3.5, great little car. I had a Honda S2000 prior to this and I actually prefer the Mazda. Some of the things you mentioned in the video: Oil - some burn a little, some don't, as it happens mine doesn't. Road noise - I think this is pretty acceptable, I don't notice excess noise in mine, I think it has a lot to do with the tyres you are running. Grip in wet - again it's very tyre dependent, my first Mx-5 had Hankook tyres, my current one has Michelin Pilot Sport 4 and I can confirm the Pilot Sports are superb, much better grip in both dry and wet conditions. A couple of things I think you could look at for future projects, get a sports back box, the Cobalt ones are good value and excellent, really give the exhaust a fruity tone without droning. Also, to improve handling and body roll for not much money or effort, get some RX8 anti-roll bars, they make a huge difference. I've got 'yellow dot' bars front and rear and they are a huge upgrade on the standard Mx-5 bars.

    I have a 2016 in blood red. I'm amazaed at the people that don't know what car it is; they'll ask if there is a 4 door sedan version.
    I replaced the antisway bars and it adds a lot of confidence in cornering - less roll. Also put in ram air intake for a bit more low rev response.
    I've never spun the car, and have snow tires for winter. It is my everyday car. Agree the trunk (boot) is more spacious than people think. I don't find the noise a problem.
    Best purchase I've ever made.

    We have a very rare to the U.K. NC model in fab condition, it's a Japanese import with 'Roadster' on the boot, also it's badged 'Japanese Car of the Year 2006' on the nearside only, it's so special with very low mileage as it only gets summer use, spends the winter months garaged, oh and it's an automatic and that suits us, also has keyless entry and air con. Apart from maintenance with new brake pads all round, road tax and insurance it's cheap and fun.

      Any decent suspension set up is going to set you back a bit, I think you get what you pay for. I’ve heard none other than good things about MeisterR, Zeta CRD’s for road tyres, ClubRace for track tyres, GT1’s for competing!

  • @jairo.cabello
    @jairo.cabello 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can't agree with you on the suspension. I put meister R's on mine (CRD) with the softest spring option and the change has been mind-blowing for any kind of driving. Car is way more stable on virtually any condition, which makes it more safe in my opinion when it comes to an emergency situation or a loss of control. Totally changed how the car felt, and with the soft spring the car is barely any more uncomfortable. Even my girlfriend has notice it, has she feels less sick on mountain drivers because the body roll has been dramatically reduced.
    Great video any ways!

    Biggest downside of the NC over the NB for me: Without that bulkhead between the seats for the speakers and wind-shield, the parcel shelf in the NB was so much more dog-friendly.

    Brilliant video!! I take it the weight rating on the sills on the driver's side is max suspension loading? Mine says 1360kg, which I was immediately suspecting wasn't the actual weight of the car, and confirmed if yours is 1100. Might need to find my local mx5 group to add to the experience as well 🤔

    • @CarThought
      @CarThought  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Yes VIN sticker weights are gross vehicle weights. I.E. the maximum weight the vehicle can be loaded to including the weight of the car/fluids/passengers. Lots of people mistake this for weight of vehicle. It should also list axle split ratios so you know where to load the weight.

    I bought a 2012 mk3 9 months ago and plan to keep it forever so it's a dry weather car. It has the lowered suspension so ride is hard and it's not quiet but thats part of the character. You dont have to go fast to have fun. It just feels fast and looks great in red with black hardtop. Sadly I have not driven it lately due to a mysterious knocking which could be the droplinks? and it cant be looked at until later in the month so missed all the good weather. I cant wait until its sorted.

    Coilovers help alot BC's for instance, Its not about driving to fast its about keeping control and Stock suspension can be very hard on inexperienced drivers, and that brings me to the grip, get GOOD tires on a mx5, get Michelin or Continental stay away from budget tires. You should check your drainage holes. If the one way valves fail (very common) it can let a lot of noise into the cabin roof up or down. Road noise seems to get funnelled up the drainage holes.
    Try aquarium foam placed in the drainage holes from under the car or for a proper job mx5parts sell a hood drain modification. Did it on my '06 and it made a HUGE difference to road noise.

I’m a dry weekend warrior, with occasional wet (driving to an event) and a few tracks a year so I’d go for something sticky that can do a bit of rain such as a PS4. But if you want everyday uk commuter (aka wet) id go for uniroyal rainsports.. if it’s a track focussed car probably AD08R’s or Toyo 888r.. everyone’s different! Only after owning the car for 2,5 years I have accidentally found out that the side mirrors can be folded to make space in the garage. They are so hard to move that before that I thought they were fixed and I'd break them if I push any harder. Wonder if you know that already :)
    8If your car is eating oil it might be that the thermostat failed earlier, the previous owner didn't notice it in time (or you even) and the car ran with a much too cold engine constantly which caused heavy wear on the cylinder walls. Nothing to be done except a complete overhaul. The oil consumption might also be due to the PCV valve but this is rare, the former problem is common to NC1s.

    • @GMak81
      @GMak81 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The MX5 as a whole will make you a better driver. The short clutch action teaches you not to slip the clutch. The handling teaches you how to feel for grip. The gearbox and pedal setup positively encourages heel toe downshifting. The "lack of power" (it's plenty quick for B roads, which it's built for) makes you get everything out of the engine, and really overall this car makes you feel at one with it.
      It makes you want to become a better driver. I have yet to drive it in the wet, but I've ridden motorbikes in heavy rain so I think I should be alright with this hahaha.
      With the roof down, when you're pushing on, this car is rewarding like a motorbike, it will make you smile and if you like driving, this car will make you LOVE driving.

Aircon still works fine after 13 years and clears steamed-up windows on a wet day in seconds. Brakes - why upgrade? The standard ones are progressive and powerful right up to the ABS cutting in. Usually people fit spacers for looks as the performance gains are marginal especially where the alternative is to fit a wider tire. As you’ve fitted to the rear you probably won’t notice a heavier steering feel, but maybe some vibration? but it can depend if they are hub centric or not? 20mm seems like a lot to me 🤷‍♂️ Remember you’ve greatly increased the load on your wheel bearings now, so they might not last as long, especially if driven hard.

      Thanks for the comment, they’re mintex racing 1166 track pads, renowned for squealing as the friction material is an endurance race compound (not as bad as XP8’s though!) You can see they don’t squeal when up to temp in one of my track videos. When you say tips of the pads, do you mean on the backing plate that seats into the shim? Or the back of the pad? Copper grease is normally used on the back of the pad to dissipate heat, but as I’ve never had any overheating problems I don’t think this is needed. I don’t see the point in greasing the shims as the total shim movement is probably only 20mm over the life of the pad, usually they’re covered in brake dust, which turns into a paste when mixed with the grease.. just don’t see the point tbh! None of the higher performance cars that I’ve worked on use any so 🤷‍♂️

      @@CarThought ha ha 'touche' - OK. It's just that mine does and mines a 2007 NC so a year older I think. I think the a/c is broken though, not sure how cold it should be. Think I've been lucky and got a special edition. It's a 1.8 and has leather heated seats, leather wheel, handbrake, gearstick and A/C. Would dearly love to get it bluethoothed up some how any ideas or videos on that? Love the videos, keep up the good work!

      Hi Robert, I believe the aircon to be an option, which mine wasn’t fitted with! Usually non aircon cars end up as track cars 😂 I’ve seen a few different ways of connecting mobiles, but there’s a problem with the stock Bose amps and apparently they sound terrible once connected up to a modern device.. not sure how true this is! Most people will replace with a double din touch screen as it has all the features and more (some have apple car play too). I should have a video soon investigating whether I can use an aux cable or not as mine also doesn’t have this. Thanks for the comment and glad you’re enjoying the vids 👍☕️🤘

    The 4x4 high ride height just ruins it. Get some Eibach springs to get it where it should be.
