Hey, Kakarot. I was wondering why some mobile suits can use beam weapons and why some cannot. Like the Gelgoog is able to use the BR (Beam Rifle), but the Dom, the Gouf, and the Zakus can't use beam weaponry. Could you tell me why?
It all depends on the power of the reactor. The Gouf and Zaku don't have a powerful enough reactor to power beam weapons. Beam weapons require a lot of juice from the reactor in order to fire. Another thing is that the MS has to be designed to use beam weapons. The Dom has a slightly more powerful reactor than the GM but since it was made before Zeon had MS-size beam technology they probably never installed the hand plugs necessary to provide power to a beam weapon (picture of what those hand plugs look like: gundam.wikia.com/wiki/File:Rx-79g-desertequipment-hand.jpg ) And not every MS can just use any beam weapon. Some beam weapons draw more power from the reactor than others. Like in Gundam Unicorn where the Delta Plus uses the Unicorn's BR. You can see that the internals of the arm overloaded because of the huge power surge required to power the Unicorn's BR.
