0:15 "...instead of...well, you know...Donkey Kong, which isn't exactly the most graphically impressive game out there." That's not what people thought back in 1994.
I decided to pick up this game after seeing this video and recommendations from other sources. I usually don't like platformers much nowadays but this game is really fun. I have to disagree with what you said about the boss fights though. Sure some of them do overstay their welcome but they do the same thing as the level design where they introduce the basic concept of the boss, and then the boss starts to "evolve" and throw new adaptations upon this concept to further challenge the player and I find it cool.
I discovered your channel, I shit you not, 20 minutes ago, and this video pushed me to buy the game, as soon as I have the money I'll be picking it up. I've never played a Donkey Kong game and for some reason I assumed they were like... really clunky and shit compared to Mario but this looks smooth and fun as all hell. Thanks dude, really like the channel so far too ;)
Oscar Payn Thanks man. Hope you like it, it's loads of fun. The first world is a liittlle bland compared to the rest of the game but still great compared to most other platformers.
I remember when this was released and I was trying to explain why the game is good because of each level having a gimmick. You pretty much put my thoughts on this game in video form. Great video.
_"Considering Retro Studio's techno-wizardry, I assumed they'd do something to really show off the Wii U hardware, instead of... Well, you know, Donkey Kong, which isn't the most graphically impressive game out there..."_ The irony is so strong with this sentence...
I did not go out and by this because of your video. Because I already own it. But you did convince me to re-download it on my Switch and play it some more and I’ve been having a blast!
More! Just found your channel through GameMaker's toolkit and... youtube magic. Lovin' it only watched 5 of your videos so far. But great stuff. Since you asked I own this game because of the death throws of the NClub, and I'll have to actually bother to play it now!
The Rocket Barrel themes are actually all supposed to be played together. Each one is a part of one big one. Look up the mash up, it's actually really REALLY cool
Neat vid! I think experimenting with this style really worked out for you! I played Returns on the Wii, and I loved it to death. I've wanted to pick up this game for quite a while now, but every time I think about going to pick it up, I choke on the $40-$50 price tag. I know that makes me sound a little entitled, but being a kid in college with just a really small part time job to give myself a little spending money, spending that much on every video game I buy isn't that realistic. And something tells me that the fact that I have at least some type of small income is a lot more that what many people can say. Nintendo should really lower their prices after a year or so of having a game out in the market.
Games like dk tropical freeze and raymen legend makes me sad that we dont get that many tripple A 2d platformers as much as we used too back in previous generations
I would like to hear your opinions of Rayman Legends possibly in another video given what you had to say about this game. I honestly have played neither but to hear each given their own critique with the possibility of some comparing/contrasting between them would make for good content. In the end one doesn't have to be better than the other and both might be worth playing. Also, "Rare games these days that are actually fun"..."Rare". That was both humorous and painful, good job!
Funny you mention that, before I got to Tropical Freeze I was actually thinking of doing a video on Rayman Legends, but then I ended up enjoying Freeze a lot more, likely because of the difficulty. Legends, while having cool and interesting levels, is just far too easy unfortunately. Music levels are sweet though.

Honestly by this point in the gaming industry dynamic music should be a pre-requisite.
777boman well games like Doom and Prey still have dynamic music too 😊
Great video. This style is perfectly fine for you.

DKC games are more fast paced and momentum based than MARIO games. DKC also doesn't do power ups like Mario, it's more skill based.

I will be getting this game on switch
I love all your game design videos - please keep them coming! :-)
Every level having its own gimmick is also what made the original DKC series so good.
DK:TF is one of my favorite 2D platforming games ever. The soundtrack is solid gold!

My favourite platformer of all time
It says you have a Bayonetta 2 video at the end, but I can't seem to find it.

Have you been looking at my fucking notes or something
Do Dragon's Dogma.
I picked the game up because of the vid 🙏🏻
What's that? You decided to have a "swing" at impromptu videos? More like "Comedy Button", eh folks?!
Yeah this game looks great, let me just go buy it- WiiU exclusive pffffthahaha yeah okay kid lemme know when it comes out on a real system
You mean a system like PS4 or Xbone which barely have any games at the moment?
