the soundtrack to this game was amazing. My mom was a classically trained musician and she always liked it when we played DKC. It's such a polished game. It transcends its medium.
As someone that's literally listened to Donkey Kong country OST as a go to for music my entire life and wishing someone talked about the magic that is the OST, I'm so happy to see this
Dunkey's brilliant way to talk to his viewers is something i never stop admiring, he could be talking about footage from an empty street where barely anythings happening and STILL make it sound interesting to the ear
I remember as a kid thinking the underwater music from DKC was the most beautiful video game music I had ever heard so much that I recorded it on VHS using my VCR.
Best video you've ever done Dunkey, I could watch a 2 hour video just about David Wise and these games' soundtracks, they really make you feel like a donkey
I will agree while that even though the video was a little repetitive and the voiceover was a bit annoying there really was something for everyone 7/10
It's not just David Wise! Eveline Novakovic and Robin Beanland also contributed lots of music to the original Donkey Kong Country. Eveline also voiced the main character, Joanna, in Perfect Dark
this is probably my fav video Dunkey has done bc it resonates so much with me. i used to play DKC2 over and over as a kid and the music is what always stuck with me the most. the composers were tasked with just making some music for a monkey video game and ended up creating some of the most instantly recognizable, fun, and catchy tunes ever put in a game right alongside some straight up transcendental masterpieces. shit goes so hard. shit goes absolute bananas.

David Wise is truly one of the people who really helped advance video game music, because the music is so much a part of what gives Donkey Kong Country its vibe. The music just fits each level and is so insanely catchy but also deep in scope.

David Wise was and is a wizard when it comes to music. DKC OST's are so memorable and comfy, that I used them to put my siblings to sleep when they were babys. And we still jam to the OSTs as adults now. - A truly timeless trilogy.
Crazy thing is the songs he made for it were too large for the Nintendo so he spend weeks changing waveforms to get it to be able to play and trick the Nintendo into playing bigger files. He’s a legend. Music like that literally was impossible to play on the N64 Before him
I love how his jokes are layered like an onion, so only the sweatiest can enjoy the succulent core of the beautiful humor only a black content creator could ever understand, and therefore, create.
I had a tear of joy while watching this video. Honestly so happy that I enjoyed this game in my youth and now. The soundtracks really built a vibe and atmosphere in the games. Thank you Dunkey for this video and thank you for making me feel nostalgic for something I loved ❤️ Edit: 2023 and am back for more Donkey Kong December!
DKC music is uncontested. There's so much to digest in every song and just like Dunkey, you can have a field day breaking down what makes every tune stand out.
I love that Dunkey focused on the soundtrack most of the video. The gameplay is great but the music is a major reason for why DKC is so iconic. Shoutout to David Wise, the man who composed it.
Yeah, an the end is a brilliant troll. He briefly shows the Aquatic Ambiance level (without including the song) and says gameplay & graphics are also good. Normally people only talk about the graphics and gameplay and about a single song, Aquatic Ambiance.
Best decision I've made in a while was getting an early 2000s trinitron for free on facebook market. The old lady was just happy someone moved the 40 pound boulder out of the house for her. And now I'm playing NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, PS1 and PS2 on the best consumer display that those games were specifically designed around.
Really like the stark contrast of the last 2 videos being in depth retrospects of the series, and this one glossing over the entire gameplay, art style, and studio to gush about the OST. DKC's soundtrack is baked into this channels DNA, you can just tell Dunkey's wanted to talk about it in a video for years.
This was an unexpected surprise. I thought he was just gonna talk about DKC in general but he focused on perhaps my favorite part of Rare’s DK games: the incredible soundtrack. As he said, every 30 seconds the songs would add another layer and transform. I remember timing the first snow level to reach the checkpoint barrel by the time the fast piano comes in. It always felt so EPIC. I miss the days when videogame music put chills down my spine.
Dude fuck that snow level! It was the nemesis of my childhood for so many years. There was one barrel that always stumped me where the blizzard kicks up so it's harder to see the screen, and on those early 2000 box TVs they're even more fuzzy. Then if you fail its back to the beggining of the ice world. I got further than I ever had before In the level and missed the shot and my heart sank, but then the screen followed me as I dipped below into the SECRET BARREL! that let's you skip like half the level. I can remember so vividly the moment of distraught and then relief. Truly a gaming memory I will never forget!
@seth thomas I can definitely relate! The same exact thing happened to me. They're such amazing classic games. I'm so happy to share the whole DK series experience with my son.
Not sure if it's your jam, but Ori and the Will of the Wisps also has top tier music. I mean it's no DKC (because nothing is) but if you're looking for amazing music (game is really fun as well) it might be worth checking out :)
David Wise was also sound designer on DKC2 in addition to being the sole composer, which is why atmospheric sound effects are woven into the music as naturally as they are. The whipping sails in the wind acting as a snare drum roll in "Jib Jig" are a perfect example.
Dunkey’s appreciation for music ingrains itself into his takes on videogame experiences in a way that breaks out of the videogame youtuber mold. Good shit, Dunk
Connected so much with the bonus theme. I still remember when I was a kid and I had fever, I would wake up with a crazy headache and temperature, then, I started playing the song in my head and the more it played the better I felt. These soundtracks are absolutely life-giving.
A thing I love about Dunkey is that his bombastic style of raving touches on the wordless joy which video games make us feel-in a way that other critics refuse to because they won't express themselves. 1:00 hits the spot. I guess you could say this video goes bananas.
man mr. Wise's music on DKC was so genuinely good that the hype still goes on after almost 30 yeeeears. Forever love to this games and this soundtracks
As someone who grew up putting the game on pause more than once just to enjoy the music, this is one of the most accurate reviews of all time. David Wise crafted masterpiece after masterpiece in that game. Thank you!
Yeah I guess those were presumed and needed no mention in the sense that we all know they're great tracks already. Though he may dedicate the next video to them. 🤔
Playing the Donkey Kong trilogy on the Super Nintendo with my father was a massive part of my childhood. He passed away a few years ago. Now whenever I listen to the soundtracks, the feeling of nostalgic melancholy is so bitter sweet it's impossible to accurately capture with words. Everybody is familiar with that sensation of pressure building up behind your eyes just before they start to well up with tears, it's like that, but I'm all alone in a meadow on a summer's day, and I don't know when I'm supposed to return home, or whether I ever had a home to begin with.
Only time will make you truly come to terms with it. Like when you get out your crusty SNES and have your kid play it with you. And you remember how your father must have felt. This connection is strong and last longer than a lifetime. Hope you stay strong
My dad introduced me to the Super Nintendo I remember still being amazed when he beat super Mario world when I was probably only 6 or 7 he passed away from a heart attack a while back and not a day goes by where I don’t wish he was here but things like those memories keep me going and remind me of the good parts of him and now I pass on those good things to my children stay strong and blessed ❤
"This is like the music that plays when you meet Santa Claus in heaven and he gives you a million dollars." In a year of incredible Dunkey quotes, this might be my favorite. And very appropriate for the season. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, everyone!
Every one of the songs in this video are permanently stuck in my head for life. Each song instantly transported me back to constantly being killed in every one of the levels. Some of the best videogame music ever produced.
Don't forget to try out Country Returns and Tropical Freeze. Returns was a gigantic part of my childhood (I'm 16) and Tropical Freeze improved upon that game in almost every way. I'd say Tropical Freeze is the best platformer I've played so far, and that's comparing it to games like Mario and Hollow Knight.
THANK you for also including DKC3 and not treating it as if it were so much worse than the other 2. I love all 3 games a whole lot, especially the music. You just hyped up, talking about game OSTs is a huge mood, and basically me randomly to my friends every now and then. Thanks for all of your vids Dunkey, they are awesome.
This was just pure gold. DKC saga rules above everything else, the music of course is unforgettable. And somehow, you made it even more awesome with this video. Thank you.
Teasin' us this whole time with Aquatic Ambience!! Dunkey you know what you were doing! Now I have to go listen to a 10 hour version of Aquatic Ambience.
DKC 2 is the GOAT of SNES games. Amazing levels, great gameplay, a challenge later on, and the composer, David Wise, made an ABSOLUTE BANGER of stage tracks. DKC 1's music was great, but then David said "Imma crank this up to 11" for DKC2. Absolutely amazing tracks in that game. So many amazing stage tracks. I consistently listen to DKC2 stage tracks and go back to do a full playthrough of the game almost every year. That game is the GOAT in my 20+ years of gaming.
These games got me into video games, and we used to play the DKC series all the time with my Aunt and Grandparents. Hard to put into words how awesome and nostalgic it was to just quick browse through the music like you did
That level one song where the drums fade in and then it gets funky... well that has been my alarm clock song for years. I love that it starts out subtle before it gets poppin'. I can tell how long I slept through the alarm. Sometimes I wake up and it's jamming out, sometimes the drums wake me up. No matter what, I'm never upset to hear that song. It soothes me out of the dreamy sleepy state and into the waking state. I recommend it for all.
I cannot express the amount of love I have for this trilogy as it was my childhood. Every aspect of these games was imo made with pure love. Seeing loved brings me nothing less than pure nostalgic happiness. And the soundtracks, of my goodness some of them are still some of my favorite video game tracks of all time. This is a truly underrated trilogy.
How did you do this whole video without mentioning Aquatic Ambience? It's a straight up masterpiece and it was written about a Monkey riding a swordfish.
Speaking of masterpieces, this video is Dunkey's own masterpiece. His sensibility in editing and passion for the game is so inspiring. Makes me want to make similar videos of my own.
In a game about DKC music, I really appreciate the love for Eveline’s songs/DKC 3. We all know Wise is an untouchable genius, but Eveline definitely deserves her flowers.
The level of comedy to release a song last year announcing Donkey Kong December, not follow through, then actually do it a year later is top-shelf stuff. I feel it's going underappreciated throughout the latest string of videos.
I'n glad you did this video. Donkey kong country OST is really one of the best in the game industry, great bass, amazing ambience, the songs develop through the levels, sometimes is calming and other times just pump you going bananas. And you know what's even more incredible? this is made in a SNES cartridge with limited kb to work with, an amazing feat of engineering and programming.
There is an aquarium in my city that i had the season pass for, I figured out that the last hour of the day was virtually empty for like 90% of the time, so id smoke some weed and load up the underwater track from the aquatic level and just vibe with the fish. The soundtrack is just too perfect.
I love when dunkey does videos like this because I feel like I genuinely learn stuff. I've never had the chance to play many of the older DK games, so it's crazy learning that many of these songs I've heard so many times before came from the DK series this whole time. Thanks Dunkey!

I miss the days when videogame music put chills down my spine.
rare was pretty damn good with their music in other games aswell. banjo-kazooies ost is absolutely insane imo
Right? Dunk is helping me appreciate jazz through his own jam sessions and joy with Donkey Kong County. The whimsy is real.
IM SORRY
Connected so much with the bonus theme. I still remember when I was a kid and I had fever, I would wake up with a crazy headache and temperature, then, I started playing the song in my head and the more it played the better I felt. These soundtracks are absolutely life-giving.
A thing I love about Dunkey is that his bombastic style of raving touches on the wordless joy which video games make us feel-in a way that other critics refuse to because they won't express themselves. 1:00 hits the spot. I guess you could say this video goes bananas.
1:55 Saying "Echoing through the cave" with a light echo filter is just the typical Dunkey nuance I've come to enjoy often.

Stay strong, it must be very hard. Cherish those souvenirs too. They seem, and probably are, beautifuls.
It used to bother me SO MUCH as kid that you were only allowed to play as Donley Kong in the first game.
