Recorded at Celtic Connections 2009, Glasgow Scotland. Tim O'Brien - Vocals and Mandolin Jerry Douglas - Dobro John Doyle - Acoustic Guitar Todd Parks - Bass
You should hear the actual recording from Jerry Douglas’ slide rule album, Arty McGlynn plays in and the drive that he takes with him is just something else
I had saved this to my Favourites, and now in reflection this is the best version I have heard I am 70 years old now but I must declare this as the best it is accurate and to the point his voice is ace.
Hey Joe started its life as a folk tune. It floated around folk circles, was covered by the Byrds prior to Jimi' cover of the tune. The writing of this tune accredited to Billy Roberts in the early 60s. A bluegrass rendition is not that far out. The name of the game in music is interpretation. Tim O and Jerry Douglas do an awesome interpretation on this video. What makes it is their superb musicianship and energy. Besides the blue in bluegrass comes from the blues.
Hey Joe was written by Billy Roberts, whom I knew and played with when we played the same coffee houses in San Francisco in the early 1960's (Coffee Confusion, Coffee Gallery, Drinkin' Gourd) Jimi Hendrix gave Billy credit, righteously so. Tim O'Brien is one of the best versions I've ever heard, including the version with Billy Roberts and John Cippolina, whom I also played with in the old folk days in Sausalito at the Barge.
BTW, while we expect nigh-incomprehensible virtuosity from Tim and Jerry, props here to John Doyle, who shovels the coal into the belly of this beast, so to speak. Note that he isn't draggin' along behind them, he's drivin' this damn thang!! Powerful.
Yep... good observation regarding John's driving rhythm... but... this really is a tour-de-force from dobro-god Jerry Douglas, and while Tim's vocals are good, he brings some tasty mando chops and slick pickin' to seal the deal.
Get his album Red On Blonde. All Dylan covers based on Blonde On Blonde. He kills it. Just kills it. He’s amazing and plays everything. His sister Molly is good too, but he’s in a world of his own. Also, plays on everybody’s albums. Have fun.
Yeah. He’s pretty amazing. All the instruments AND the voice. Plus the song-writing. We don’t get all this in one person very often. I’ll never get too much of him, that’s for sure. Have you heard his sister Mollie yet? The two together will blow you away. Beautiful. That’s a “ Good work, God!” If everyone there was one. Truly. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻👍😃🙏🏻🙏🏻👍❤️
This is BAD ASS! Anyway you look at it! There's so much strength, passion, and all out respect for the American Rock N'Roll. They absolutely transcend the rebellious nature and raw screaming of the American spirit into this Celtic tradition.
An uncle introduced me to Jerry Douglas by means of union station. I usually like to listen to blues and classic/blues influenced rock and had no idea how much Jerry has actually been influenced by the same type of music. Now I can't get enough. Such a versatile player.
I have only recently discovered Tim O'Brien. As a lifelong Hendrix fan this was certainly an eye opener! Just goes to show that there are no preconceptions in music, and everyone can make a tune their own by putting their own personality and soul into the playing. Great stuff here, and I will be checking out more of Mr O'Brien's work. Thank you for posting @tomtscotland !
Yes... It was a self-styled blues band called "Ice," in Wheeling, WV, and we were doing mostly folk-rock stuff with some blues thrown in. It was during that period that Tim, who was a great finger-style guitarist, and harmonica player, took up the fiddle, and ultimately, the mandolin. The rest is history.
OMG...what a way to start out the morning. 30 minutes ago I discovered Tim O'Brien from Hot Rize, then find this video with Jerry Douglas! Holy crap...more coffee!!
Been enjoying Tim killing it on mando, fiddle and guitar since his days with the fantastic ‘ Orphilia swing band ‘ back in 1970’s Boulder Colorado . Nobody could ever be surprised he’d go so far with the very best out there .
Have to write something, but can't do it justice. Incredible musicians, incredible voice, hell I even began to respect him for persevering with such a dodgey haircut by the end!!! Brilliant. Inspirational.
I just saw John Doyle yesterday at Club Passim in Cambridge, MA. He was awesome! It is no wonder why this is such an amazing piece of music. At first, I thought...."Jerry and Tim, of course this is going to be great." But Mr. Doyle's driving guitar really completes this sound. I wish these three would tour as the super-group they most certainly are.
I've sat here contemplating for 3 minutes of what to comment on this video. I have listened to Tim and Jerry my entire life and I decided on this comment: Holy Shit.
É A VIDA??
That is a hell of a voice Tim has on him, also a killer mandolin player. Then you factor in the force of nature that is Jerry Douglas.... What can you say?
Have Mercy! I listen to Tim, Dirk, and Scott on Songs from the Mountains and The Crossing daily, but this is really a change up AND I LOVE IT!!!! What a great version! Thank you for your video! Great performance!
Great version and you got the lyrics right. Can't hardly find one version in 20 now that start with Joe with the "money in his hand." He first has to go buy that "blue steel 44" before he can go find his ol' lady.
BTW, you were very gracious in response to people's critical comments attacking this sentiment. Which is, like, the third time that's happened in the history of the internets. Props to you, sir.
This is such a great comment. Tim is an animal. Literally. Jimi Hendrix did not write this tune, so nobody stealin' nothin' from Hendrix. Was Hendrix an animal? Sure, if you believe he was human and not an avatar.
Bill Monroe invented bluegrass, this song is great, allthoughh it isn't bluegrass. Tim and Jerry are bluegrass players, I could listen to this over and over, the energy is wow...
Tim O'Brien is perhaps the greatest all around talent in bluegrass music ever ❤️💪🥀
love the grin when Tim's voice cracks at 1:15. What a voice! What pickin!
Ha! Didn't even notice it until you mentioned it 😉
This is quite possibly one of the most amazing recordings of music in the history of the world.
You should hear the actual recording from Jerry Douglas’ slide rule album, Arty McGlynn plays in and the drive that he takes with him is just something else
One of the greatest videos on TH-cam
Truth
I had saved this to my Favourites, and now in reflection this is the best version I have heard I am 70 years old now but I must declare this as the best it is accurate and to the point his voice is ace.
Hope you're still listening to this lad, cheers fae the Scottish Highlands.
The best version of this song ever. Absolutely amazing.
joshcho stephan does a good version too
@@davidlonergan7295 J'adore aussi mais c'est une version sans chant. Tim O'Brien chante en plus et plutôt bien...

You know it.
Tim O'Brien is such a talent.
lordy lord have mercy on the mandolin man.....that's some serious melody...
excellent....

In my opinion, he's the best rhythm guitar player out there!
That dobro playing is freakin amazing!
Still the best video on the internet!
Great singing, and with the Hendrix of the dobro, the great Jerry Douglas.
My freaking word I have no clue who Tim O'Brien is .. but after watching this im thinking he can part the red sea! Amazing job
T Cook O’Brien is amazing. Plays everything. Check out his albums.
Get his album Red On Blonde. All Dylan covers based on Blonde On Blonde. He kills it. Just kills it. He’s amazing and plays everything. His sister Molly is good too, but he’s in a world of his own. Also, plays on everybody’s albums. Have fun.

I agree, but I wonder if Tim would say he can’t
He sure dam can my friend! I also recommend The backest crow, and Water bound, sang by him. But he has many mindblowing songs! :) Have a good one!
This is BAD ASS! Anyway you look at it! There's so much strength, passion, and all out respect for the American Rock N'Roll. They absolutely transcend the rebellious nature and raw screaming of the American spirit into this Celtic tradition.
Dear Tim, ILY
Absolutely amazing version of this song. I was looking for something different, and these guys knocked it out of the park. Thanks for posting!
Tim O'Brien for President.
If fucking only!!
Indeed...ty ♡
An uncle introduced me to Jerry Douglas by means of union station. I usually like to listen to blues and classic/blues influenced rock and had no idea how much Jerry has actually been influenced by the same type of music. Now I can't get enough. Such a versatile player.
What do you listen to for blues influenced rock?
I love it that he strate up shouts! No vers, no corus... just full pressure on the adrenaline pipe throughout!
Great Jimi Hendrix song. Fabulous musicians, Tim and Jerry, and the guys.
Still outstanding!
Should have a million hits .
Yeah. Probly better we keep it to ourselves.
Here we have Tim O'Brien and Jerry Douglas there is nothing better
Oh how I love Jerry Douglas and Tim O'Brien and the great left handed acoustic guitar player Jimmi Hendrix.
I have only recently discovered Tim O'Brien. As a lifelong Hendrix fan this was certainly an eye opener! OMG...what a way to start out the morning. 30 minutes ago I discovered Tim O'Brien from Hot Rize, then find this video with Jerry Douglas! Holy crap...more coffee!!
How could someone not like this?
The great Tim O’Brien!
Been enjoying Tim killing it on mando, fiddle and guitar since his days with the fantastic ‘ Orphilia swing band ‘ back in 1970’s Boulder Colorado . Nobody could ever be surprised he’d go so far with the very best out there .
Jerry is working very hard to keep up. He is doing a fine job, this is fast, furious and GOOD.
If I go deaf listening to this too loud, so be it. Can't say that about many tunes, but these guys are absolutely on fire with this.
John Doyle is a human rhythm machine. Wow.
Is that the bassist or guitarist?
Have to write something, but can't do it justice. Incredible musicians, incredible voice, hell I even began to respect him for persevering with such a dodgey haircut by the end!!! Brilliant. Inspirational.
the best version i've ever heard
Holy crap. I think my ears need to reboot after that beating. Hands down the best cover I've ever heard of this song.
Off the chart energy and talent.
hhoooooweee!!! LFG! What tremendous energy and spirit this exudes!
Wow, this is just outstanding.
Tim O'Brien is absolutely brilliant in everything I see him
It's been 2 years now since I first heard this song. It's still the best. It still gives me goosebumps.
I just saw John Doyle yesterday at Club Passim in Cambridge, MA. He was awesome! It is no wonder why this is such an amazing piece of music. A bit ironic that he’s a lefty.

I never cared for that song, until NOW!
Frigging Tim O'Brien
+Daniel Egan right?

That is a hell of a voice Tim has on him, also a killer mandolin player.
Then you factor in the force of nature that is Jerry Douglas....
What can you say?
For a number of reasons (some obvious, some not) this performance represents a major touchstone of my musical youth.
HOLY @#$%!!!!!! This is as good as it gets.... pure acoustic, wooden heaven!
Jerry i love you. That is what a dobro is supposed to sound like! you rock dude.
Jimi is doing a standing O for this! Amazing!
I keep coming back to this video/song. Remarkable!
Yeah, me too. At least once a week!
Addendum:
Kudos to all involved for doing something genuinely original with an r'n'r chestnut.
Have Mercy! I listen to Tim, Dirk, and Scott on Songs from the Mountains and The Crossing daily, but this is really a change up AND I LOVE IT!!!! What a great version! Thank you for your video! Great performance!

What a voice. Perfect counterpoint to the music.
Tim is my spirit animal...
This is such a great comment. Tim is an animal. Literally. Jimi Hendrix did not write this tune, so nobody stealin' nothin' from Hendrix. Was Hendrix an animal? Sure, if you believe he was human and not an avatar.
