We are all lucky to live in a time with so many amazing mandolin players and with easy access to their work. Chris Thile, Mike Marshall, Tim O'Brien, Sierra Hull, Jarrod Walker, the list is long.
Tim has awesome technique. When I played guitar more seriously keeping the fingers close to the strings was a key to speed. He barely seems like he's moving his fingers. Thile is not human.
@@JosephEaorle He's from the planet where they spend all - and I mean all - of their spare time practicing. It's the planet all the greats inhabit. Ability + Creative attitude + Awesome work ethic (plus that little extra something, of course) = Chris Thile.
The Gift of music is an amazing thing! Thank God that we have media such as this that we can appreciate things that we may not be present to view. Both these guys are incredible in their own rights and belong on the Masters Stage... The differences in their styles is what made it fun for me. Tim is great but I think Chris has a way of thinking outside the box that leaves you on the edge of your seat asking for just one more! Thanks for posting the vid, I wasn't there but I can enjoy it as if...
This isn't up for debate guys, yes there are amazing mandolinists out there but none cover the spectrum of music that Thile does with such authority. Think about this Chris plays folk, traditional bluegrass, classical, chamber, pop, "newgrass", jazz, and all genres with superman powers. Others do it for one or a few but I haven't heard another that covers music of all types with the extraordinary ability of this once in a generation musician.
It's performances like this that compel me to go to Greyfox Bluegrass Festival *every* year. I'm never going to not go until such time as I'm watching the great festival in the sky.
If you do not understand just how high level playing this is..... I truly feel remorse that you don't. I cannot recall more matched playing , well maybe Sam bush with either.
We live 14 years in Reno and had the opportunity to hear Tiny Moore and Jethro Burns in the late 1970's early 1980's at a Jazz Festival there. Watching them play was like Liquid Music...they just slithered their fingers along and the notes flowed out...Lovely to watch as it was to listen!
Very short story about Tim O'Brien. After a show with Daryl Scott after their 'Real Time' album release, I was at the merchandise table and commented that I had never heard of him before his work wtih Scott only to look up and he's standing right in front of me. I was mortified of course, but he just laughed and couldn't have been more gracious. I've been educated since. Awesome musician and a cool dude.
Tim isn't as flashy or self-promoting as a lot of folks but over the years I've realized that he's one of the great talents of our time. I met him once too and he was just a nice, unassuming guy. I like that.
Chris thile provides an extra added element of entertainment with his body English like I'm chord changes, he definitely liked leans into it is pretty cool it's good to know
Let me take a shot at that great question. Listen to all the resprctful and kowledgeable people commenting here. These people listen critically to this music they truly love. If it became just more mainstream "pop" music, I believe it would get a little(or a lot) dumbed down and bland... And truthfully I wouldn't learn much or appreciate it like I do from folks like you. So - thank you brothers and sisters for a lifetime... By the way I'm 70 this year . Keep on keeping on.
@@deanoverlie224 god bless you brother. Just turned 23 two days ago so I have a lot to learn still and music has been a large influence into the adult Ive become. I agree that if this became mainstream it would become dumbed down. I just wish there were independent stations that would play lesser known artists. At least then I wouldn't have to depend on recommendations based on bad algorithms that are largely based on popularity instead of associated genres and artists.
Because there's a sign that says sit down and STFU so everybody can see and hear the music instead of acting like a bunch of idiots at a rock concert. RESPECT !!! DO YOU UNDERSTAND?
@@benjaminlaster3773 Ha Ha Grandpa? Nope I was 25 when I put that sign up. You should have more respect than going around calling strangers Grandpa. Do you understand?
I don't agree at all. He's been playing these songs his whole life. Of course he's not going to take the same, safe path through the tune. If you know the changes, you know that he knows them and that he's still playing over them. You could say the same thing about Hamilton de Hollanda and how he plays Jacob's tunes but you won't find many Brazilians agreeing with you. They're so inside the music, they're outside!
I don’t agree, Chris is by far a more talented mandolinist. Watch his chording, But also watch his ability to run through notes and do it so flawlessly
Chris Thile has some impressive licks, but it always seems to go the same direction. Fine, bluegrass musicians have been exploring other influences since forever, no problem if he doesn't keep it straight-up bluegrass the whole time. But he never even seems to include any bluegrass. He jumps straight to the tricks. It reminds me of that guitarist we all know who jumps straight to soloing on the blues scale on every song. It doesn't have to be only bluegrass, but it's nice to include at least a little.
his personality and self- centeredness irks me. His whole NPR show was about HIM performing on almost every song. Not sure why Garrison picked HIM. yes, he can play, but there's more to it than that for having a good show and being a good performer.

It's fun to see two incredibly talented musicians, with very different stage presences and music approaches playing together like this.
Am still amazed at these guys 13yrs later!❤
Tim has awesome technique. When I played guitar more seriously keeping the fingers close to the strings was a key to speed. He barely seems like he's moving his fingers. Thile is not human.

On the day they filmed this he was! Really incredible playing.

I dunno, Avi Avital is pretty darned good.

Right behind Sam bush, but Thile is great but Sam is the best in the world
i saw this live 4 years ago and inspired me to play mandolin
And can you now??
yeah, eight years on now, hows that mando treatin ya?
I love the casual feeling of this virtuoso music. Tim and Chris are really at ease with this music.
These guys shred. Thanks to whoever recorded this so the rest of us can enjoy this masterful work.

I started applauding to my computer screen with my headphones one. Very well done!
Awesome!! Two of the best in the business
outta sight, two of my favorites!
Get it! Y'all are awesome!
Chris Thile's an alien from outer space
Both fantastic, but Chris is an absolute genius.
Amazing! Superb!
I love Tim’s effortless playing. No drama, no hijinks, no look at me. He just plays and beauty pours forth. Never an emotion on his face. Love it.
Amazing! Thanks for sharing. Love these guys!
What an amazing treat! Thanks for posting.
Chris -- coaxing the musical spirit out of his body
Chris's Loar goes in for the mic thud at 3:20, but he's cool about it.
Insanely good in every way
I love it when the players have as much fun as the listeners.
wow, great music!

Virtuosic, tasteful, magical, musical _stuff_!
You should be able to double like a video if you watch it again immediately after it finished the first run.
Yes
You still alive man! Miss ya 🤙
Tim's playing like it's any ol' thing, and Chris is full-on making love to his mandolin.

Bluegrass Pickin', Damn!! Love the way Chris Thile just goes off! Wonderful stuff.
I AM CRAZY ABOUT THIS PIECE !
amazing what 2 mandolins can do....
Fantastic!
Amazing!!!
He plays so relaxed. I guess he practices or something.
Wow! And check out Tim’s left hand. Makes it look so easy.
Great job
This is mandolin goals!
wow I like Chris Thile style of mando playing
Unreal.
wonderful
makes me deeply regret not making it to greyfox this year!

"Real Time" recorded in Darrel's living room is one of the best bluegrass albums ever, hands down.

what masters of the mando!!!
Awesomeness
Chris Thile “The Master”!
I second that motion.
Tony Rick? who does he play with? Antonio Arroz?
Is Thile a Wika's adept according to his red thread on the left wrist?
Wow!
haha! think I heard someone drop the ol F bomb when they started the harmony parts :D
pause right at about 7:02.. did i see david akeman??
chris thile won the world mandolin championship at like 11... for those of you who dont know... just saying
He's a pretty good musician too.
Why can’t bluegrass and folk be main stream? Even country music sounds like shit on the radio, I wish this kind of stuff played while I’m at work

I can see why they call it the masters stage.
providing you live to be 100
makes me want to take up mandolin...and by about the time I died, maybe I'd be half this good
Did you get a mando?
Wow as good as jethro burns the next best this century
Dang.
Amazing talent
mandolin awesomeness + dubstep moves = Chris Thile
Two great pickers
1:20
ooohhhhh burn
Chris wins.
pakwfoley It's not contest!
pakwfoley but listen to his CD "Red on Red"-- a great performer and interpreter of songs--- Dylan's on this CD.
He is great. Check it out Armandinho from Brasil
Good grief. The Gods of Mandolin.
the diference between these two is that timmy makes it look so god damn easy
and there are 7 people that dont like this video?.. Im guessing they are Kanye or Nickleback fans..smh
good
If you would like to learn to play Jerusalem ridge on mandolin, please check out my new tutorial. th-cam.com/video/ye5V4YKYipE/w-d-xo.html

If you can't hear the melody in his first break, then you don't know the song
What are you dumb?
scary larry,,,,edna kansas
ditto chloe
Chris Thile often has a look on his face while playing like “holy shit I can’t believe I did that”
I did not know Neil Patrick Harris played Mando.
Antonio Arroz -- lmfao
Do only young black people listen to rap?
Racist POS! I'm black and play in a string band. Hope you go blind
I don't care for tunes in a minor key!
No one cares
Negative comments are probably due as much to his "cool rocker" act as his playing. Personally, he bugs the crap out of me.
Yes. Absolutely fantastic playing but I hate watching him and listening to him talk. It’s like he went to school for charisma.
Chris. Stop moving so much. Stop it Chris.
Chris. O___O Stahp.
Jealous much???
You need help, dude!
Be great if Chris actually knew the chord progression.
