    For 25 years I re-enacted the American Fur Trade era and attended many Rendezvous of the early 1800s period. The blankets of choice sold there were the Early's Whitney Point blankets made in England and shipped to North America for the Indian Trade for mostly beaver pelts and other furs. They are 100% new wool in various sizes, colors, and weights. I became a blanket trader for a few years and gave many of these beautiful high quality blankets as gifts to my family and friends. I never used a sleeping bag and tried to be as historically correct as possible. I still use these blankets at home during Winter and sleep toasty warm. The company has been in business since the 1600s.

      Thanks. I found out about point blankets when I found one in an antique shop. Based on the information that I could find on the label style and the color pattern, it was made between mid 1920s and early 1930s.??? It's a 3 and a half point indigo and black. It is my most prized wool blanket.

    I thought I was weird for having six or so. I've thinned my collection - sold a partial wool made in Mex. some years ago. I was hoping you'd give some info. on the Hudson Bay knock offs which are on Etsy. I thought there was a certified Hudson Bay which was actually made in England, but currently can't find verification of this. These are supposed to have a soft finish, and my guess if they are Chinese. The ads are AI written. I've got a Kozy (pink that's why it was given away) and satin trimmed (5 pounds at the Birmingham charity shop in 2002) one both made in Mother England 100 wool, most likely 80s-90s. Also a Mex. made one which was made to compete with the Hudson Bay back in the 90s for the historic reenactor crowd. Tan and brown/gray with trim with a diagonal denim like weave, thick and tough for camping. A great buy. Like your alpaca one, I think ones made in Mex. S Am. etc can be great if they are not made for the tourist trade, or are made to custom specs.

    I bought the EKTOS blanket, but I'm worried it's too cold. I need a wool blanket for my survival class out in Arizona, and this blanket can't even keep me warm under my fan at night. Which blanket would you recommend that's warmer and less than 200 dollars? I will add that our blanket will be our only bedding.

    • @funbobtime
      @funbobtime  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The Ektos 100% wool is a little thicker than the 90%, but I wouldn’t use either one by itself in temps under 55 degrees. If its big enough to layer over itself and and a warm base layer of clothes you may be ok. Don’t let that trip be the first time you sleep with it. There are several high end thick warm vintage wool options on Ebay for less than $150 all the time, and every once in a while a steal under $60. I have a Early’s Whitney 4 point that I would bring on that trip, It cost me $50 and a hour of careful cleaning. It’s not just what’s over you for warmth, the pad, or whatever insulation you can get under you will make a difference! Good luck!

    The Pendleton's that you featured in this vid are the higher end "art" blankets that they offer. way pricey and highly collectable. I instead got the yakima camp blanket ages ago (around 130$ at the time) and I bloody love that blanket. Queen sized and got me through some very cold winters. Unfortunately, that same blanket now costs almost 260$ (the Twin sized blanket is 190$). I also have the Ektos 100% wool blanket and it has yet to pile/pill up on me. This will be my third winter with that one. I sleep under it every night (the pendleton is the couch blanket for when it gets cold in the living room)

    • @funbobtime
      @funbobtime  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve been wondering how the yakima is, I haven’t gotten my hands on one of those yet, and I do love the Ektos 100% wool. It’s good to hear such a good experience with it! I’ve wondered if because they use recycled wool if the quality is more dependent on the blanket itself. I have two of them, one that seems to thin out with each use, and one that’s as good as the day I got it.

      Campo Alpaca has the best hand made Alpaca wool blankets by far. The absolute best prices also. I'm unafiliated with them, just a very pleased customer with about 10 of their blankets, a hat and two scarves. BTW, they are more artistic than anything Pendleton puts out. Keep warm in comfort friends!

  • @jedi_drifter2988
    @jedi_drifter2988 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I love EKTOS wool blankets, but If you're going to go for Pendleton pricing ... Go Alpaca wool it's better than sheep's wool and softer/warmer + hypoallergenic .

    • @funbobtime
      @funbobtime  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can find genuine Alpaca four less then $80 on eBay, and if you want the softest, that is the way to go for sure!

    • @jedi_drifter2988
      @jedi_drifter2988 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@funbobtime Many of them are not 100% Alpaca or small sizes. Also there are 2 different Alpaca breeds. One has a better grade of wool softer and better for clothing/blankets. The other breed is more industrial, which the wool is less expensive coarse/rough and uncomfortable to the skin, same as some sheeps wool.

      I bought a Faribault "Foot Soldier" army medic blanket 12+yrs ago just after they had raised the price to $100-$120. They stopped making them a few years ago but they had gone up to $250. Amazing quality wool blanket, and I own 4 Hudson Bay blankets as well as 10 other wool blankets. The Faribault Foot Solider blanket was similar to the wool Filson uses in their Mackinaw Cruiser, but the Faribault wool was much nicer and had a tighter weave making it better at blocking wind than the Filson Mackinaw wool. I also have a couple older "Faribo" small size stadium blankets from thrift stores. All are very high quality.
