The most exciting thing in the 80s was knowing there was a new van Halen record released. The 2nd most exciting thing was knowing the band would play in your city, in support of that record.

Yep, it was like Christmas, your birthday, and the last day of school all rolled into one on the release date of the new albums! You could count on it pretty much every year from '78-'84. We'd put the release date on the calendar and run right out after school and grab the new album, then head right over to whomever had the best stereo and listen and lose our minds! Likewise when the tour promos started coming on the radio. You'd have to find somebody that was willing to camp out in line to get tickets back in those days and bribe them to get an extra for you, or you weren't getting into the show! They sold out fast back then.

Man people, there are literally so many things about the 80s that I miss that It would take me hours to even list them all. But, the ones that stand out the most are first, Thank God I was born at a time that I was entering 7th grade when Van Halen's first album came out. That was my very first album I bought with my own money. It was a big deal back then to walk to Tower Records' and check out all the album covers and new bands. Tower Records' was blasting VH 1 that day and the second I heard it I was buying that thing!!! Ed's guitar work was literally mind blowing the first time I heard it!!! The very next day I bought my first Electric guitar, it was a cheap Strat Copy from China and was hard as hell to play but it looked cool as hell and only cost me 15 Buck's. That album changed me and my entire life big time!!! I'm still playing all these years later. There was only one thing bigger than a new VH record coming out, and that was making sure I was at every concert they ever played within 300 miles of my town where I grew up. Culver City CA. I was fortunate to see VH 12 times in my life. I've seen every line up that they ever had, and every single show was off the hook. Yes, there were a few shows where they were straight drunk off there ass and although those few shows weren't quite as sharp as the others they were still something to see!!! Eddie was one of the very few guitarists who could actually still play amazing drunk off his ass!!!! Back then every single dude that played guitar wanted to sound and play like Ed, and that's still true today. Back then it was so much harder to teach yourself to play because there was no internet or cell phones or any other modern devices that exist today where you could learn how Ed was able to play all of these crazy riffs and solo's we were hearing. Ed's guitar work was completely Magical, and almost impossible to picture or imagine how he was doing any of that stuff back then. I was obsessed with trying to learn how he was pulling this stuff off. Every show I ever went too was always a huge party, and the most important place you could ever hope to be at during those day's. I remember I was so focused about not getting to stoned, or to drunk to remember everything I was seeing. Those shows we're so huge for me because I was trying to see and remember everything Ed was doing. I managed to pick up so many kick ass techniques and tricks by watching Ed play but those didn't come easy. It took me almost 2 years and 4 concerts to actually figure out so many of them. Ed was doing so many different things that nobody had ever heard or played before so it was very difficult. I remember being completely overwhelmed with how he played every single song !!! Every single song had so many different elements and techniques going on all at the same time and he was doing so much shit while running and jumping and spinning around that it was absolutely mind blowing. It was so difficult to clearly see how or what he was really doing while he performaned. I remember being so blown away after watching Ed play because seeing it live was crazy because if you played guitar then, then you realized that he was actually doing mind bending stuff threw out every single song. It never stopped or started !! It was literally technique, after technique continuely throughout every single song. Every other bands guitarists would do stuff that I was able to see and digest and recreate later without to much trouble. After all of those shows I was able to still see and remember everything I wanted to take from them without making myself completely crazy !!! But, after watching Ed I was only able to really get small pieces of the puzzle while trying to sift thru all of the pictures in my mind. There were just so many goddamned things he was doing so fast and so effortlessly that you just couldn't even hope to remember everything you were seeing. Slowly but surely I began to piece many of them together so that I could actually play them and use them in a song !!! The biggest piece of pie for me was when they released the 5150 home video concert footage from there first record with Sammy. That entire concert was absolutely Epic !!! That was by far the best live show I had ever seen out of all 12 VH concert's I'd ever been too. I literally wore that VHS tape out, and had to buy a second one from me starting and stopping that tape over and over and over again. That concert footage really helped me and was a game changer for me because that period was when I was really finally able to learn and master so many of the techniques that I was struggling to put together. Those were by far the best day's of my entire teenage life and will always be some of the most defining moments of my entire life. Anybody who wasn't alive or the right age to enjoy everything that made the 80s and 90s so remarkably special will never really understand what they missed!!! Any humane being who doesn't think that Eddie Van Halen was the greatest Rock Guitarist to ever live is 100% wrong !!! Eddie was hands down The Greatest Rock Guitarist to ever live. That topic isn't even debatable people!!! It just Is!!! And, it's not even close people!!! RIP Eddie, We all love you and miss you every single day for the rest of our lives!!!!!❤😢

I remember when the first album came out: We were all like "What the hell?" Never heard anything like it. Blew our minds! Grew up anticipating all the new VH albums. David Lee stuff is the real VH. Changed to more basic song structure and top 10 with Sammy. Just listen to "Can't get this stuff no more" or "Me wise magic" - Sammy could never write stuff like that in my humble opinion. More creative and crazy with DLR. Miss you Eddie! @@mvela1235 Sammy Hagar years were VH lite. You really think 5150 or OU812 is better than Fair Warning or Women and children First? I understand if you don’t like Dave’s voice but even Ed’s guitar playing was so much more dark and powerful than anything he did after 1984. I’ll never understand people who say that the Sammy Hagar years were better. I think that they’re the kind of people who just got excited that they were hearing songs like “dreams”, “ love comes walking in” and “why can’t this be love” on the radio 24/7. Even “ jump” as much as I hate that song was better than all of those wimpy Sammy era tunes.

I have a ticket stub for a VH concert from 1978 that says 8 50. Now that's a deal people. That's literally crazy people. It cost me a whole 8 dollars and 50 cents to be squished into the front of that stage with at least 4 or more super hot girls leaning on me for the entire 2 and a half hour show. Man, that show was so damn loud that I had expensive ear plugs in and it still was incredibly loud. Yah, I can't even begin to describe how incredible Ed's guitar sounded. It's almost impossible to beilve that Ed was creating every sound for every song completely on his own, by himself. You would swear there had to be more people playing some of the parts you were hearing. Everything that you here is Ed with one guitar, Mike, with one bass and Alex playing 1 drum kit. Absolutely mind boggling. It's a shame that most people really don't even have a clue how hard it is for the entire band and all of there songs and music were being created by 1 man playing 1 guitar. Straight friggin 😧

it kinda makes me laugh when I read about how people like one eara over another Van Halen eara. it's all Van Halen. Edward was ask once if he would do a solo keyboard album. he said he writes 90% of Van Halen music now . why do I need a solo album. my point is that if DLR and Edward were to kiss and make up . DLR was getting all the music and riffs that Sam and Gary got . so if DLR was singing on 5150 . the ? is would it be better . because he (DLR) was getting all those riffs that Edward had on 5150. or we were getting the dkot album after 1984. and I think that ship would have ran out after that. one. cuz we would gotten more than a live album in Japan in 2012 . so at the end of the day for me. it's all Van Halen. to me Edward wrote all good stuff no matter who was singing with him. he was a great musician from the first song to his last. with any of the 3.

That couldn't be said any better!!! That is 100% the correct answer and that should be how every single VH fan should feel about VH entire catalog. We all love Dave !!! Yes, we do. But, with that said. We should all love Sammy and Gary too !!! In the end, All of it, and I mean, all of it is Eddie's music, period. All of it!!!! Discounting any of It. Down playing any era, album, or song is completely retarted and takes you off the list as a real VH fan. Your gone!! Your off!! You and your opinions are irrelevant!!!! All of it !!! It's all really 100% Eddie and Eddie's music. Without Ed, there is no music and there is no VH morons!!! Hating on any of there singers. Hating on any of there songs or albums really is only hating on Eddie. That's really what that is!!! Your literally only hating Ed when you take that position. Do you people really think that if you hate the Sammy or Gary era music because Dave decided to go solo makes you a true VH fan? Your clearly delusional!!! Eddie would spit on you, and laugh in your face people!!! Eddie would never accept you as a VH fan unless you love and respect his entire catalog!!! Anybody out there who doesn't agree or understand this obvious truth !!!! Is a complete friggin Moron !!!!!😮

I grew up with DLR Van Halen and I can't see anyone else doing what he did with them. The music was so much more creative and crazy and fun with DLR - no matter who wrote it. Just look at the "top 10" stuff Sammy did with them and then DLR came back briefly with "Me wise magic" and "Can't get this stuff no more" - I like and respect Sammy but he could never do stuff like that. My humble opinion -
