Thanks Paul. You answered a really stupid question I had. I couldn't tell whether the grey or the white was the "on" state for output format. The old tick box radio check mark was much easier in previous versions of captivate. I see it is grey that is "on" or active.
To recommend one over all others I would need to learn much more about your business and your individual needs. I would have some meetings with the various stakeholders in your organization and survey them to find out what's important. Don't forget to ask people who will be regular users of the system what's important to them. Once you have this list meet with several LMS vendors who have solutions within your budget and see who meets your needs.
I presently publish my non responsive projects at 1470 x 900 with html scaling selected. This way you get a nice quality to your projects images but will size to what the learner’s browser automatically.
Hi Paul... I have a question it'll be very helpful if you can answer..... I have created a training module in multiple languages and want to check the users have completed the training in which language. So basically want to check the trainings created in multiple languages is helpful or not. Is there any feature or action which I can add from Adobe captivate ?
I usually have one module in French and one in English. This way the module selected determines the language. I don’t know of another way to report on this information.
Thank you for this tutorial, I'm new developing eLearning courses and I've been using Captivate to export files to Teachlr (SCORM 1.2), the course play well but when I left the lesson and then return where I left it the course not load, sometimes happens at the second or third try. Do you know why this happen?
At 9:49 you will see I clicked on the Advanced button. Ensuring that Never Send Resume Data is unchecked will ensure that SCORM bookmarking will be allowed. Also look at the number of attempts you are allowing learners. It's possible they have simply used up their tries.
Your TH-cam videos are very helpful! I have been searching for a video that might address why my PeopleSoft ELM end users are unable to relaunch a Captivate class after viewing a portion of the class or even completing the class. They click the relaunch button from ELM and the Captivate course launches and just spins. Have you ever experienced this? If so, how did you address it?
One possibility is to turn off bookmarking for your eLearning project before you publish it. This way if they exit the course and re-enter you will always start a fresh run of the course. To turn off bookmarking for your course click on the *Quiz* dropdown menu and select the *Quiz Preferences* option. Click the *Advanced* button near the bottom of this window to open the *LMS Advanced Settings* window. Select the checkbox for *Never Send Resume Data* and click OK.
Hello Paul, Many of my users having trouble with my buttons (next & previous btn). They said it's hard to click the next button, I also include in the slate mode when they hover the mouse in the button it will change color but some portion in the button is not working. Did I miss something? or should I need to add Clickbox?
It's hard for me to know without seeing your project. I don't recommend covering your button with a click box if you can avoid it. Consider using an image as a button instead of a shape. Shapes can be a little strange if they have an unusual or small shape. My basic feedback would be to make your buttons bigger. If you still need help with this, you can purchase an hour from my website for one-on-one instruction: bit.ly/Cp1on1
Hi Paul, this question is more professional than technical, but anyways, here you go: what files do you give to the client? I have a customer who is asking for the Captivate file, but I normally just give the SCORM file and the HTML5. What do you think?
This really comes down to ownership, and this should be negotiated up front and written into the contract. It comes down to what the client has purchased from you. Have they hired you to produce an elearning module that they will own, or have you been engaged to create an eLearning module they intend to license from you? For example, I have situations where I'm hired to produce eLearning in which the end client owns the material. In other circumstances, I have negotiated, perhaps a lower rate, where they get just the published course, in essence, they have licensed that project from me, and I retain ownership. The advantage of the latter is that you can sell rebranded versions of the project to other clients and also be re-engaged if they require updates.
Great, I understand. To be honest, I am quite brand new in this world and I am missing so many things. I will try to find information with regard to this topic, but most of the elearning info related to the content production of course. It is not easy to find the professional-issues aspects :s
In most cases, professionals like me and you figure this out naturally over time. My expertise is eLearning design and development. When I worked within a corporation in the Learning and Development department I didn't know any of this stuff, but once you start trying to do this on your own you learn the true value of what you do.
Exactly. I used to work creating content for higher education (basically activities in a LMS like Moodle). Now I am having my first experiences as a freelance with private companies and I am learning as I go. Many thanks for your advices! You can't imagine how useful are for me. Really appreciated :)
Great tutorial - thanks. Is there a video that helps you understand how you can share a captivate project with anyone else? For e.g. you could have various elements to the project; like (1) Intro, (2) Module 1, (3) Module 2 -and so on! Let's say you want to share just the intro element (which is a separate Captivate file called Intro.cptx) - how do i get that into a format that i can share easily?
I mean a way to share for colleagues prior to using in a corporate environment (so not sure whether that is for review purposes or collaboration)... I guess i want people to write comments somewhere to tell me whether certain elements need to be removed/amended, etc...
Greetings Paul, than you so much for every video you have shared, they have been of great help. At the moment I'm having some trouble publishing form captivate 9, I've done everything like you explain here but there seems to be a bug somewhere, for example if I leave the "Never Send Resume Data" option unchecked and load the SCORM to Moodle, everything works just fine, but the thing is the course I'm created is not supposed to resume where it left if the student quits early, it is supposed to start all over again, so I do just as you show and check the "Never Send Resume Data" option and publish the SCORM (this is the only different thing I do) and I load it to Moodle, but the problem is that when I try the course all the question slides stop working, it just show a blank slide and it shows nothing else then it continues to play the project on the next slide, it does this in different SCORMS, I've tried everything and the only thing that allows question slides to work in Moodle is to uncheck this option. Do you have any insights on this issue? PD: I've tried this uploading in two different Moodle sites.
Yes and no. A published SCORM package is a ZIP file that contains all the HTML, Javascript and CSS files that make up your eLearning course. You could unzip it to your desktop and open the index.html file and see the course. If the course is published with reporting turned on you may get a popup error looking for the LMS that it would normally be run from but most of the course should run in a browser window even without an internet connection. Where you would need an internet connection is if your course calls for resources that are located on the Internet. For example, if your course displayed a TH-cam video on one of the slides, obviously you would not see the the TH-cam video.
Paul Wilson Adobe Captivate Tutorials Thank you so much answering my question! Although, I may have another problem, which is when I open the file index_SCORM.html it’s not loading? It opens up a tab, but it’s just blank. Am I doing something wrong?
Paul Wilson Adobe Captivate Tutorials I published using SCORM 1.2 and with the reporting turned on. And no matter how many times I change the settings, nothing works. What do you think may be causing this problem?
Hi Paul thanks for the video really interesting. I see your point about uploading the Square Space. What would you do if you were selling modules for people to complete on the site? So it would be like an embedded file which people paid to view?
I'm late to respond to this comment but one of the most common questions I receive from viewers is how can they distribute their elearning course to their students without an LMS. This doesn't address the e-commerce solution entirely but I suspect you want to find an LMS with a paid component to it. I wrote this article that explains my views on this type of question. captivateteacher.com/articles/2021/4/18/to-lms-or-not-to-lms (I'm trying to go back and respond to every comment or question on my TH-cam channel).
Hello Paul. I am from Bhutan. The question is wont it be possible to upload the contents to my own website where my clients log into my website and browse the e learning contents?
Greetings! I just heard that Adobe Connect will be adding more advanced HTML5 capabilities. I was wondering if an organization uses external locations to store content for playback, should the end product file stay in the Zip format or should it be unpacked? , Which file should it be hyperlinked to from navigation within the LMS (the link the zip file?). Does that answer change depending on if you are hosting the content in Adobe Connect vs. some other electronic repository? Thanks so much for your excellent videos and any insight you have to share on this!
+Fire Sail Studios I'm far from an expert when it comes to using Adobe Connect. My instinct is that you would only create a package file (zip) if you are uploading directly to Connect but that's just a guess. I would suggest reaching out to Adobe on this one. You can email them at CaptivateHelp@Adobe.com for support.
Hi Paul, thank you very much for all your great work! I would like to ask you about an issue we are experiencing with our LMS. We have a number of Captivate projects in our own LMS. The LMS logs you out after 20 min. without activity. The problem is that, apparently, any actions you do using the Captivate course are not "aknowledged" by the LMS and still logs you out after 20 min. when it shouldn't. Is this an issue you have ever experienced? Any clues about how to prevent it? Thanks a lot!
Try this. When you publish your next Adobe Captivate project, Open up your *Preferences* window *SHIFT+F8* and navigate to *Quiz / Reporting*. Click the Advanced button on the reporting page. Check *Send Data On Every Slide* and see if that helps.
Thank you Paul for your Tutorials. They are very helpful. This is my first project and i am wondering if my file size is huge when i publish it. Even when i publish EXE file of one slide image, its about 6MB big file. My client wants it in Exe Scorm package and am afraid of the file size. The presentation have videos, quiz and also User Navigation using Unity Web player. So, I am wondering if 170 to 200MB is an acceptable Package file size. Your inputs will be highly appreciated. Thanks
Most of my courses end up being between 25 - 50 MB. You need to remember that eLearning is essentially a web page or a series of web pages. The goal might partially be to make your eLearning projects look amazing and be rich with multimedia, but it should never be at the expense of the user experience. As I build my eLearning projects, part of my time is figuring out how to reduce the bit rate of all my multimedia, especially video. I feel it is essential that you have software like the Creative Suite from Adobe to make sure you optimize everything that goes into an eLearning course.
Thank you very much Rhee. I hope you continue to get benefit from my videos as new ones come out. There are several new ones in the queue that you should see in the next two weeks or so that are really awesome.
Hi Paul. This is very helpful. Thank you so much! Here's a problem I am facing. My Captivate 9 output works fine on my laptop. However, after it was uploaded on the LMS I faced a challenge while testing it on through the client's app. The content is slightly heavy (150mb+). The audio is loading seamlessly but the video is taking time. Finally the video is showing from the beginning even though the audio has already advanced. So this is creating a lag between the audio and the video. Can you please help me sort this? I am using background music all through the module.
Hi Paul Thanks for the great video. I want to create an online course using Captivate to sell from a Wordpress Website. Do I need to use a LMS course program like WP Courseware to display all the lessons?
Hey Paul, thanks for helping on this video, but I still facing trouble when I upload at Moodle my scorm package. It doesn't run the animations made from Powerpoint. At Adobe Captivate it works perfectly... Do you have any Idea what I'm doing wrong?
Unfortunately I don't import PowerPoint into my Captivate projects and I'm not a Moodle guy either. Test your course over on SCORMCloud and see if it runs there. If it does, it should work with any compatible SCORM LMS. Best of luck.
I haven't got access to a Learning Platform and I was wondering if you could advise what the best way of giving access to my videos to users not on our network. My videos are responsive projects but can only currently be used by users on our network. I've noticed Adobe Connect -Is this something I should be looking at or would you say a Learning platform is a must?
+Tracy Wood When I worked for the Toronto airport we had about 1,200 employees that I designed and developed eLearning for. Of course our LMS was more than capable but it was an internal LMS only. No one from outside could enroll or view our courses. Since the Toronto airport is home to about 40,000 employees, there were a few occasions where courses needed to be made available to many of these folks as well. My solution was to have the webmaster put aside some space on the web server where I could upload our courses. You can see an example here: www.gtaa.org/pearsonawareness/Evacuation/index.html At the end of the course, the captivate project navigates a user to a special html page where they can enter their name and print it out for their manager to see. It’s not very sophisticated a solution but it gives users an ability to create a record of their training without an LMS. I’ve also used solutions like setting up my own Dropbox Pro account, which includes a mini web server that you can use in a similar way. Here is a video about that: th-cam.com/video/QSgpi8LKtGk/w-d-xo.html
+Paul Wilson eLearning Development - Excellent; this is really useful - I'll have a chat with our IT guys. Also, thank you for your you tube videos they have been and will continue to be an enormous help.
You can publish just about any Adobe Captivate project to TH-cam. When you publish to TH-cam you will lose any interactive elements as what you will be left with is a simple video. Buttons, hyperlinks, quiz questions will cease to function and simply be displayed for the duration of each slide length. If that's okay you can publish by clicking on the File drop down menu and selecting Publish to TH-cam. Follow the prompts for your TH-cam account information and video title and description and so on.
as I said...clicking on the File drop down menu and selecting Publish to TH-cam. Follow the prompts for your TH-cam account information and video title and description and so on.
Thanks Paul I see what your saying so I don't want to manage users, I just want to sell the course. How do you up load the captivate lesson to Squarespace?
I don't know what happened to my earlier response but what I do is I upload the course to my Amazon Web Services account and generate a unique link for that. Place that link on a password protected page on Squarespace and publish it as a page that needs to be purchased from your site.
Struggling to publish a captivate file with a linked swf (another published project). I can get it to play finally after many, many attempts, but I can only get it to open up in firefox and that's after I reload the course twice and then let the linked .swf finish loading. This is going to an LMS. What am I doing wrong?
There are so many unknowns here that I would find it difficult to know where you are going wrong. The first thing is the linked SWF. Is it just a SWF movie without any interactive elements? I would strongly discourage anyone from doing anything in SWF. All the major browser companies have vowed to drop support for SWF in the very near future. I would publish this content as HTML5 if it requires interaction or if it’s just a movie publish it as MP4 and bundle it together with your main course using the Multi-SCO editor, or simply have them as separate modules within your LMS course shell. Take a look at this video and see if these steps might accomplish what you want. th-cam.com/video/4xg_8dz6GD0/w-d-xo.html
Hey Paul, Is the process the same in Captivate 9? I followed all of the steps as you did them and still I cannot upload to the LMS. In fact, I cannot even see my project in the HTML5 browser. What am I doing wrong?
powapics So the process really hasn't changed, I would say the circumstances have changed. Today I wouldn't use SWF but would publish for HTML5. Adobe has announced end of support for SWF and most modern web browsers are not including SWF by default. Also mobile devices don't use SWF either so HTML 5 is really the way you should go.
Sorry...I don't think I was very clear in my original question....I am trying to publish as HTML5. I cannot view the project in the HTML5 browser or the scorm cloud. And when I upload to the LMS (which is LEO), I see the loading wheel but nothing happens.
powapics it’s impossible for me to know what’s wrong with your course but first thing I would check is to make sure you’re running the most up to date version of Cp9. If that doesn’t help try using a process of elimination. Say your course is 50 slides long. Delete the first 25 slides and see if it runs. If it does than you may have a corrupt slide between 26 and 50. Keep narrowing it down until you find it. Also, once you update to the final version of 9, you will need to add the JSON mime type to you LMS as Captivate 9.0.2.437 changed how it published multimedia files.

No. At this point SWF are disabled in Chrome by default. I recommend you publish for HTML5 only.

Thanks for the quick response!
Hi Paul, do you have a video of how to embed that zip file into a wordpress page?
Cheers buddy!
School Of ESL sorry I don't.
Roger! Tricky little that is...grrr
Yeah, the internet is pretty fractured with various methods to do just about everything. It's amazing any of this stuff speaks to the other.
Thank you so much Paul for your kind inputs. Your tutorials have made my life easier... :) Thank you very much!
It's a common best practice to merge video with the intended audio so as to avoid delays cause by load time.
Hi Paul
Thanks for the great video.
I want to create an online course using Captivate to sell from a Wordpress Website. Do I need to use a LMS course program like WP Courseware to display all the lessons?
***** Thanks Paul
Now I have a better understanding of how to do it.
Thanks for your time
I believe my older comments are missing. Sorry for adding comments on such an old comments.

You can see an example here:
www.gtaa.org/pearsonawareness/Evacuation/index.html
At the end of the course, the captivate project navigates a user to a special html page where they can enter their name and print it out for their manager to see. It’s not very sophisticated a solution but it gives users an ability to create a record of their training without an LMS.
I’ve also used solutions like setting up my own Dropbox Pro account, which includes a mini web server that you can use in a similar way. Here is a video about that:

+Paul Wilson eLearning Development - Excellent; this is really useful - I'll have a chat with our IT guys. Also, thank you for your you tube videos they have been and will continue to be an enormous help.
+Tracy Wood You're welcome. Thanks for watching and please share my videos with anyone you think could benefit by them.
Would be great to see how to publish to a web page
Hey Marco. Check out my latest video tutorial. I hope you find it useful. th-cam.com/video/TLla3t2rmo4/w-d-xo.html
hye..I have 5 slide interactive video and how to publish on youtube?
You can publish just about any Adobe Captivate project to TH-cam. When you publish to TH-cam you will lose any interactive elements as what you will be left with is a simple video. Buttons, hyperlinks, quiz questions will cease to function and simply be displayed for the duration of each slide length.
If that's okay you can publish by clicking on the File drop down menu and selecting Publish to TH-cam. Follow the prompts for your TH-cam account information and video title and description and so on.
ty for the reply..how to publish project in adobe captivate into video?
as I said...clicking on the File drop down menu and selecting Publish to TH-cam. Follow the prompts for your TH-cam account information and video title and description and so on.
ohh..okay.. ty again
Thanks Paul
I see what your saying so
I don't want to manage users, I just want to sell the course.
Thanks. I was just trying to copy the established work protocols but I'll try those other things.
Best of luck.
Ok...ta. I will try that.
Thanks so much
You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
and thanks for subscribing.
...but how do I publish to my internal server? Used to be so easy in Captivate 6 and 7...impossible in 8?
have you figured it out?
This might help: helpx.adobe.com/captivate/using/report-quiz-results-internal-server.html
Has anyone had issues of saving big files as a mp4 format? Every time I save I get 0kb.
no problems here
Paul Wilson Adobe Captivate Tutorials thanks. I'm not sure what the issue is. I'm stuck...
savontham my expertise is design, for technical support you should really reach out to Adobe.
Paul Wilson Adobe Captivate Tutorials thank you. I got in touch with Adobe and there were corrupted slides. I did not know it did that.
savontham that's good news that they were able to help.
Like #700 here. Lol Great information; thanks so much!
You're welcome Eric Brown, and thanks for watching.
