The perfect tool, why on Earth don't Opinel make these for the No 12, I'd rather buy one than try to make one, well done to you George, (ps, patent it)
Yep always wonder why they have not. They could put it on the explore they..its a 12. Thanks fir watching and be safe out there
I’ve actually emailed about this before, I tried telling them it would be the perfect outdoor pocket knife. This was a few years ago but they said they had no plans in exploring the idea at this time. To be fair doing this on a large scale would probably require some new tooling they don’t have but I personally think they’d get a solid return on their investment.
If they made the saw blade for the No.12, they could not sell you the saw. It’s about sales. When you make it yourself, Opinel does not get that sale. If someone, looking at you 2nd Chance George, decided to custom make these, they could profit from Opinel’s lack of innovation and greed.
You can get Opinels in bulk, for less money per knife.
Yep, not me though...lol
They probably will now.
I did this a few years ago, using an Opinel No.12, a thin steel washer, and a modified jig saw blade. Worked pretty good and I can change the saw blade whenever I want.
Nice. I saw a Blackie Thomas video where he used a hacksaw blade. I think on a 9, but not sure. Thanks for watching, and be safe out there
Old Man...I think youre awesome!
Great job. really love the kitty. My wife came and watched over my shoulder and even she likes your little Mary.
God be with you.
Lol...thankyou much appreciated 🙏
Great job George. You solved some problems that are part of the Opinal. Improving the handle and handling the moist problem. I could not unfold the knife after a few days preparing food with it when making a canoe trip for several days. I also tried to improve it but it did not work out as hoped for. So the next step will be adding thin brass washers between the blade and the wood. For those who are appealed to the combination of a knife and a saw blade but do not have the skills nor the time that George has, there is a solution: The Victorinox Rangergrip 71 Gardener. I do not know if that model is available in the USA. We live in the Netherlands, so “close” to Switzerland. If you replace the toothpick with a Firefly from Tortoise Gear (US) and add some Helix tinder in the corkscrew you have a very nice combination. For those who want to make their carbon blades more “patina” you also can use mustard. That worked great on one my BPS knives.
Good information, thankyou. LOL, I looked for brass washers to fit but could not find any. I finally looked at the victorinox, never owned one , now that I looked, I am ashamed it took me this long to get one.....lol. thanks for watching 👍, appreciate the info and your support. Be safe
Opinel knives are awesome, although, living in coastal northern Germany, I prefer the stainless versions. Nice idea to make a knife-and-saw-combo.
You should widen the slot a bit more and use very thin washers, as well as impregnating the wood around the top by boiling it in wax to help against swelling in moist conditions and snag on the blades.
You can file a nail rest into the saw blade too to help with opening.
According to your batoning: try it the smart way - cut some wedges from small stuff first and baton the blade IN til it's almost buried to start a split, then take it out and go on with the wedges (watch the video of Felix Immler (the Victorinox-guy) on this matter). NEVER baton a blade THROUGH the wood, you never know, what will happen!
Go on oldtimer, you're awesome !
Lol...thankyou, good info. 😊
This time Mary supervised so it came out great, the nail nick on the saw and the handle modifications made it look even better. Thanks for the video, George.
Yep was pleased with it, now the sheath...lol.
I like your modification. One tool, two jobs. Looks good too! Maybe Opinel will take up your idea. Well done.
Thankyou, appreciated
I'll be surprised if opinel doesn't steal this one!! Looking forward to the sheath!!
Lol...I smell royalties...finally can retire....hope springs eternal
Your Opinel modifications are great. I've watched a few videos now. I'm actually more of a kitchen knife guy because I like to cook a lot, but Opinel knives have been with me for almost 50 years as EDC knives (i am 61 now).
I got my first Opinel when I was about 12 years old. It was an Opinel #9 made of stainless steel. A few years later I bought the #10 in stainless steel.
Then I worked as a chef for many years and discovered my love for high-quality (mostly Japanese) kitchen knives made of non-stainless carbon steel. This led me to buy a carbon Opinel. It's a #8 that I carry with me all the time. To protect it from swelling, I have simmered the handle in hot rapeseed oil. Not only is the knife now better protected against moisture, it also looks wonderfully mahogany-colored. Like all my non-stainless kitchen knives, I take great care of my Opinel and regularly treat the handle and blade with camellia oil. Although I still have my traditional Swiss army knife and my 30-year-old Leatherman with me on trips or when camping, as the additional tools are very useful from time to time, I use the Opinel 90% of the time.
I generally prefer non-stainless knives, which are very easy to sharpen.
It's fun to watch your videos.
Greetings from Berlin, Germany
Nice.I myself prefer carbon aswell. I am not very good at sharpening..lol. thanks for watching always appreciated. Be safe
@@2ndchancegeorge I don't really get on with classic whetstones either. I find it difficult to maintain the correct grinding angle. Professional sanding systems are simply too expensive for me.
However, I have bought the HORL roller sander, which at least gives me a good sanding angle of 15 and 20 degrees. This system isn't perfect either and I can't get smaller angles like 10 degrees, for example, which I need for some of my Japanese knives. That's why I try to keep knives sharp for as long as possible once they've been sharpened. To do this, I have a variety of honing leathers with different sharpening pastes, as well as a hanging leather like the ones used in old barber stores to keep razors sharp. If a knife really gets blunt or gets nicks, I take it to a professional knife sharpener who also specializes in Japanese knives.
Daily care after each use is important. Clean it, dry it, give it a few strokes on the leather, wipe it down and then put it in the leather or wooden sheath or on the magnetic strip.
If you love your knives, take care of them. Since I know my personal limits in terms of sharpening skills, I prefer to leave my knives in professional hands if necessary. I sharpen my Opinel, which is very easy to sharpen, to 15 degrees on each side with the HORL (if necessary) and then with the leathers.
Lol..I hear you. If in doubt get a professional.
That's a great mod George , just got a No 12 last week, haven't done anything to it yet. if you want a stronger and faster patina, just heat the vinegar and watch it bubble :) comes out super dark.
Ahhh, good tip thankyou. Be safe
That's was incredibly awesome George 👌 Great video and job.
George, several years ago, I noticed that the high-carbon steel on Opinel knives worked excellently with fire steels. I coupled that observation with my desire to carry a No. 8 Opinel as a backup knife when hiking and foraging. I had an extra clip for a knife that I got somewhere, and it was an embarrassingly easy project to flatten the end of the handle of a No. 8 and screw the clip in place. While I was at it, I gave the handle a light sanding to remove the printed name and stained the handle reddish orange. ( beech doesn't take colorants easily) and I dropped the point of the blade just a little. It's a light, handy, knife that I can clip to a belt, strap or pocket.
Nice, I have been thinking about a clip. Gonna have to do a mod and put one on. Thanks again. Be safe out there
The perfect bushcraft tool. The time and effort was well worth it. A very nice outcome. May have to add one of those to my list of projects.
Yep, best yet. It's a great project. Just finnished the sheath for it...stay tuned..lol. be safe my friend
Wow, George! That is bloody marvelous! Hell of a useful project!
Lol..yep, its my new walkabout companion....be safe my friend
Spooky, I was just thinking about a bushcraft knife/saw combo and here you are with a perfect project! 👍
Lol..do it. It's a great project. I just finnishedca new sheath for it. Be safe
@@2ndchancegeorge really loved it. I spent like an hour searching for a decent product and nobody makes anything. Considered building as you did, but I couldn't find an appropriate matching blade, just the saws... I never knew Opinel had the ideal bits!
What I really wanted was a knife with saw teeth on the spine, but then that wouldn't be good for battoning or striking the ferro, not to mention it would inevitably tear up a hand 😂👍
Always interesting to see someone improve on a manufacture's proven tool. Very interesting and entertaining. Another project on the list.
Glad you enjoyed. Fun project and satisfying. Be safe out there
The Opinel King buddy. Cool double blade. ❤
Lol..thankyou
Hopefully Opinel will see this and come out with a Walkabout Combo Bush Knife with Saw. Make sure you get some design Royalties.
Lol..right. thanks again for watching always appreciated
Now that, sir, is very beautiful and noteworthy. Weel done, and nicely personalized. I looks good, and seems to be very useful. Best regards from a young 36 year-old from Denmark.
Ok when you say young 36 years omd...it makes me think I am really old....l. thanks for watching always appreciated. Be safe
@@2ndchancegeorge Haha, sorry, I did not mean to imply that.
Lol..no problem. I am old lol. Be safe my friend
That is a very nice mod George. 2 thumbs up.
Thankyou 😆 appreciate you watching and commenting. Be safe
That's a great job you did. I have a No. 12 knife lying around here, got it for small money and don't use it because I can't find a need for it. After seeing this video, I'm honestly inspired to get myself a No. 12 saw as well and make my own Opinel Multitool. I'm not a fan of Opinels, but your modification videos always make me circle back to them. Awesome job, George!
I hear you. Considering the Opies are really designed to be a food prep knife, they are fun to play with. Appreciate your support. Be safe 😁
Well done! That is a fantastic tool! I believe Opinel would be wise to borrow your idea George!!
Lol...for a small fee hopefully..thanks for watching always appreciated
Hi there oldtimer!... tons of experience in that awesome build... I subscribed for more...
Lol..thankyou. working only another as we speak...hopefully it will go as well....maybe..l. appreciate the support. Be safe
i.ve made the same thing for a Silky saw, i have always two blades at me, super fine and rare teth and for this reason i've placed both ia a custom handle..
Nice. That's a great idea. Thanks for watching always appreciated. You be safe out there
A really nice tool you've made there! Thanks for the video!
Thankyou for watching and commenting much appriciated. Be safe 😁
This is an awesome build. Love making a tool your own.
Yep, this a very satisfying build for sure. Thanks for watching and be safe out there.
Great job George, it turned out Great….Opinel should make this combo…
Lol. Thankyou. I am sure they know about it. Be safe
i keeep comeng back to this it is in my opinion the most awesome idea ever
U girunately it was not mine. Blackie Thomas did one with a opie no 9 I think
Very Nice George!! Awesome Conversion!! Opinel needs to make one of these!!
Yep, would be a great walkabout edc.
Great job and idea. Be safe and enjoy your new knife.
Thankyou, fun project and will be taken out for some fun for sure. Be safe 😁
ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!
You're very like me; I have to modify things and 'make them mine' as well :)
I've done much the same with the handle of my Opinel No.8, except that I didn't put the grooves in the end - Hey, we don't want two knives exactly the same, do we? :)
I too took off the horrible lacquer but some of the stain is left in the wood and forms a lovely orangey pattern on the handle - Gives it that antique look.
Many Blessings to you, good sir.
Thankyou, they are fun to do. Endless things can be done to them. Be safe out there
Failure is the Stepping Stone to Success. Nice job.
Yes sir, nothing succeeds like persistance. Thankyou for the support my friend
Thanks for the wonderful video, and congratulations on your successful project.
Thankyou, appreciate the support and be safe out there
Better patient it before Opinel see this. I like it, it looks good.
I don't think so...it's been done before, not with the 12 but I think BLackie thomas did one
Can’t go wrong with an Opinel especially the carbon blades . Worth every penny used correctly they last a very long time. Nice work George careful with them sharpies lol . Merry is watching you 😳you said it Monster
Lol..thankyounmy friend. Appreciate it...don't encourage Merry...
That is complete awesomeness, looks cool and highly functional!
Thankyou much appreciated
Very well done. Looks like a superior tool now. You asked for suggestions. Maybe sew a loop to your sheath for a ferro rod so it's always handy
L..
Just finnished the sheath...you read my mind. Video up in morning. I different sheath from my norm. It worked ut well. Thanks for watching and the support. Be safe out there
@@2ndchancegeorge looking forward to seeing the new sheath.
Nice mod. I have modified my Opinel No 10 according to the bladeship and the grip pretty similar like you did. I also widened the slot for the blade for having it operating as a onehander. So that i can flip the blade out with a flick of my wrist. That works pretty good for some time. But even so I have impregnated the handle with linseed oil, it became swolen over time, so that the onehand abillity has gone. I like to try a two bladed version like yours some time, but with two knifeblades, somewhat trapper style, but with a droppoint and a sheepsfoot blade. So nice inspiration. Thank You.
Lol..you read my mind d. Was thing trapper with drop and spey blades. Thanks for watching always appreciated 🙏
Du très bon boulot! Oui, j'espère qu'Opinel va en fabriquer!
Un bonjour depuis le centre de la France.
Thankyou. I appreciate your support. And be safe over there.
The type of finish I have been using on my knives , chuck box , black powder guns , chairs etc ... is melt some beeswax take off of heat and stir-in walnut oil 1:2 ratio .
I have been using it for 15 years with great results.
BTW did you know that during the pandemic SPAM sold so well that they started a second batch ......
Lol...spam is king...be safe my friend
Best Opinel mod ever. You are awesome 🔪
Thankyou sir appreciate the support.
Good job , nice mod, drop point looks good.
Thankyou much appreciated
That’s a good vid - very informative-- got to be honest ! I do have the power tools to carry out these works BUT I would still have done it the old way by hand as you did . Personal patina and more satisfaction ( hand crafted😆👍). Just subbed ( UK)
Yep. I hear you. Appreciate the support
new sub, hope it's okay to comment so soon: nice mod George! been an Opinel fan for many years. believe it or not I made and then recommended the closed-blade lock to Opinel about 20 years ago when I was living in France, they didn't have it back then. they told me "it's fine the way it is", but seems they decided they liked the idea in the end. between the two of us we've elevated/"monsterized" Opinel to new heights. :😀 👍✌🖖
Whoa, that's cool. I love the lock. Simple and works. Thanks for the support. Be safe.
Bravo Monsieur une transformation intéressante et rapide et futée un bonjour d’un savoyard 😊😊
Thankyou for watching, always good to hear from outside the US. Glad you enjoyed. Be safe😊
That turned out incredibly well!
Yep pretty happy with it. Thanks for watching
Great idea! I hope Opinel copy your idea and offer it as a combo!!
Lol...yep would be nice. Thanks for watching 👍
Very functional mod George. Adding a ferro rod to the sheath is a great idea. Take care.
Thankyou sir
Hi George! ... Excellent video as always. I absolutally love these OPINEL's. How about nameming the knife as "The walkabout mates"? I'm surely going to give it a go! ... Cheers George! ... Kevin in Canada eh!
Oo hey, good name. It a fun project. You will love it. Thanks again for you support. Be safe up there
Dude, that is awesome man! Aren’t locking blades illegal to carry where you live? That really is a cool bushcraft tool. Thanks for showing the actual work going into it
Nope not in Minnesota. Thanks for the support as always appreciated
Absolutely genius idea ! Youve inspired me to go for it myself !
Nice that's the idea. I show these to inspire all. Just some inspiration and elbow grease and we good. If you do let me know. Would love to see pics or video. Can share it. Be safe as always
The all the way thru nail nick is awesome!
Thankyou..lol. sometimes when you make a mistake it works out. Be safe out there
Smart looking knife!
Thankyou. Appreciate your support, as always be safe out there
Nicely done.
It looks very useful
Thankyou sir appreciate your support as always be safe
Great job as usual, be careful with the sharp & shinny. Don't burn the Cottage.
Lol...got a little sketchy there for moment
🖐🏻 George , nice combo idea , 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks again my friend be safe
Great job great idea now I want one have to get to work on it but my idea for a name “2nd chance walkabout” again great video Thanks and have a wonderful day.
Lol...nice. thanks again for the support. Be safe
Wow you did a great job on this one George! Looks great and very functional. The curve in the handle gives it a lot of character. Would love to see you make a fire with it. Awesome.
Btw I use almond oil on wood handles, works great and doesnt go rancid
Thankyou sir 🙏
Should have put a thin copper washer in between the saw and blade. Love the idea and content. Keep it up buddy!
I looked for one but the ones I found were too big. I did put a washer inbetween...nylon I think. Thanks forvwatching always appreciated
Really super mods! I've wished for some time that Opinel would come out with a two-blade knife/saw, but never considered the possibility of a DIY one. Good call on changing the blade to a drop point, too, IMO. And with the jimping you added, the knife reminds me of my favorite fixed blade, the Green River Dadley. Even a lanyard hole, you really thought of everything! I smell a project coming my way...
So, did you have to quench the blade as you ground it to retain temper, or did you just go slow?
I go slow, it did not get hot at all. Thanks for watching always appreciated
I did mod my grip in a similar way.
The poky bits in the back had to go.
I did remove all the lacquer and gave it multiple coats with linseed oil varnish.
What still irritates me, is the tip shape.
I think I shall also make it a drop point, or even a spear point, like those old frontier knifes.
Yep, that's what I basically do
Solid work, thanks. Hitting subscribe
Thankyou, appreciate your support. Be safe out there.
Great video. I can't wait to see you on your walkabout video...
Lol..thankyou, planing the walkabout soon. Be safe 😁
Great video very informative nice modification.
Thankyou appreciate that. Be safe
First video, not showing how to turn the handle into a french fry 😂 great idea!
Lol..thankyou. appreciate the support. Be safe
Good morning george
Well we'll well...if it isn't the IG terror....lol. hope all is well young lady. Be safe
Good job! A toothpick and tweezers in the handle? Lol. Hope it serves well on your walk about.
Lol..hmmm, interesting...thankyou my friend
Your best yet George. Opinel should make it, and you should get royalties! I need to use it!
Lol...I wish. Be safe my friend
I've read that if you're batoning with an Opinel you should unlock the ring lock to allow it to flex as you're hammering it.
Imagine a 13.
Ahh good tip. I am nervous batoning these so tend to keep to smaller chores. Thanks for watching always appreciated 🙏
I put a patina on some of my tools using diluted gun blue. It goes much quicker than vinegar.
Yep seen that done. I don't havecany blue, but need to try that. Be safe
Nice Job, Great Mod.
Thankyou appreciate your support.
What a very nice work. Thank you for sharing your mods on the tools. Subscibed and liked for shure and i am looking forward for more content of you. Keep on going. Thumbs up.
Many thanks for the support. I just finnished a sheath for it. Came out well. Be safe
solid idea, subbed
Thanyou. Your support greatly appreciated. Be safe
I love the mods. So cool.❤
Yep fun projects for sure. Thanks for watching 👍my dear
Great work❗👋 thanks for sharing 👍🔪🏆💯
Appreciate your support big guy. Be safe
I like cats 😻🐈 and you have a lovely one..
Thankyou, she be the Boss..l. thanks for watching
Great video George! Did you end up soaking it in mineral oil? What do you use to edit your TH-cam videos?
I gave it a goid costing of oil, needs to soak in then do again. I use Pinnacle Stydio to edit.. only use about a 1/3 of what it can do. My computer can only just handle that...lol. be safe my friend
Nice job !!👍👏
Thankyou appreciated. Be safe out there
Brilliant!
Lol...thankyou. appreciate the support
Very cool idea! Did the stored blades cause a hotspot on your hand while working with the other?
Yes kinda, but nit enough to be a concern. This is typically a light duty tool. So I hope not an issue. It was more when using the blade and the knife was folded. It has more Ridge to it. Thanks for watching 👍
You have made a very useful Opinel....made it twice as useful in fact but, The ultimate bushcraft tool might be stretching it a bit.....lol
Yep. You right, here's the funny thing...that title was a you tube reccomendation....lol. I am with you there. Was testing out some new AI stuff...not impressed. be safe and thanks for the feedback
very nice . would like to do the same thing. looks to be very handy and useful
Yep works well forvthe overnight or walkabout trips. Thanks for watching always appreciated
I wonder will they see this, & start producing one. You should get in contact with them.
Appreciate the support. I am sure someone has come up with this already. But thanks for the thought. Be safe
Good idea, 👍
Thankyou. Much appreciated
Every knife should be foldable, solid fix, having a saw, a wine oppener, a scissor, a cutter holder and a scredriver holding bit with 4 head, one with two big, philips and flat, and one with small philips and flat.
True 👍
You don't have a cat ,she has a human? Great vid i always wanted one of those. The Opinel i mean. Have fun George.
And thank you.
Lol..true story. Appreciate your support as always and be safe out there
Lol.true story, appreciate the support and be safe out there
Great job sir!
Thanyou. Much appreciated 👊
Love the idea, but the reason I think Opinel don't make a combo model such as this because you have a discomfort from the blade not in use.
Yep. Cannot think of a way around that. Thanks for watching
Ideal! Pity Opinel don't do it. 4 3/4 in blade. When you go metric you'll realise that's 12 cm. Hmmm, Opinel No 12... 12cm blade...
The great thing about Opinel knives it they are so easy to customise. My EDC is a No 8 f
Yep, I love the opinels, such fun to mid. Any size will do. Thanks for watching. Appreciate your support. Be safe
well done sir
Thankyou much appreciated
you really need to contact opinel and get them to make this shieth and all i love it i ordered a saw and knife to make this
Lol...Its a fun mod. You will enjoy it. Send pictures....
Outstanding mod George. I absolutely love that idea. Would you consider making me one?
Lol...one was enough for me. If I make another it will be a giveaway. I just don't think I am good enough to sell these mods. There are guys out the who have the tools and know how to make mods. I just play...lol. appreciate the thought though. Thanks for watching and be safe
Thank you so much George. Keep those wonderful videos coming. Take care@@2ndchancegeorge
Very creative of you,you should probably work for the government, they need help 😂
Lol...trying to get out of work. Appreciate the support. Be safe
i love the combo i carry a swissarmy knife for whittleing cause i whittle alot but i love this you should send your idea into opinel and collaberate on a new knife with 2cg ingraved on it id buy it
Lol..I wish. Be safe my friend
That was great
Thankyou. appreciate the support.
That is a cool mod!
Thankyou. Appreciate you stopping
Very nice
Thankyou, appreciate the support
This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen, I have one really important question though.
If I were to send you two brand new open all knives, one of the saw and one of the blade.
Could I pay you to make one for me?
I neither have the skill nor the gumption to do this on my own, and I think this would be a one-of-a-kind piece that would be well worth whatever price you want to put on it.
What do you say?
Lol..sorry I cannot do that. If I do one, I will have to do for everybody that has asked already. I appreciate the offer. Thanks for watching and the support . It's greatly appreciated. Be safe
