Very nice. I really like the choice of handle material. Tool handles are affordable and the wood is durable and hard. The sheath was a good match. The baseball stitch was clearly the way to go.
👍 Nice job. The knife looked excellent and I believe the sheath turned out better than you apparently do. Now you have a very personal version of a good knife.
This video is just in time! Always been a fan of Mora, but just tolerated the plastic handles. Recently I purchased the Mora #2 and #3 Classic knives. Wanted a smaller blade too, but the #1 was just not that much smaller than the #2. Thought about my Mora 511 knives with it‘s.6" blade and decided to sacrifice one. I literally just cut the handle off of one this morning. Bought a wooden dowel to fashion the handle out of, and some red stain for the handle. All this was inspired by you and your knife customizing videos. Hope it turns out for me. If it does I will be buying a leather crafting kit to make a sheath for it! By the way, I did enjoy your voiceover format. Maybe we will get more in the future!
Glad I can inspire you to do these things. The reason I make videos is to do that. I am finding that the more different knives I play with the more I feel I learn. The Opinels are great for this. I would like to see some pics when you done. Let me know. Be safe my friend
George , you just keep getting better and better at these projects. The wood may be a bit light, but it sort of reminds me of the birch handles you see on Scandinavian knives. Great project indeed.
Great job, looks good. The grooves in handle you could glue dark sawdust in it to match your tools or wood burn it. We had 74° Friday, crazy. Have a great day
In order to make the work with the saw and the file easier, one can use a piece of wood that is originally longer than the finished knife handle. Once the work with the saw and the file is done, one can cut the handle pieces so that they have the right length. A thin Japanese saw (dozuki noko) is good to have for those who do fine woodwork. While using them, these saws do the work when you pull them towards you. Kind regards from Bengt in Sweden
That turned out pretty good. If Mora made knives like this I would buy one. I'm not too crazy about plastic handles and plastic sheaths either. Years ago I bought a mora knife but after BPS came out I like those more because of the wooden handle and leather sheath. The other thing that's interesting is to see how long the tang is from the blank that you bought. You should take a photo and send it Mora. Even better send them the video.
I think you did a fantastic Mora 2000, very nicely done! I've used one of these blanks before, as well as owning a Mora 2000 and a Kansbol, so 3 of the same blade. I just love it that much. I'd love to see someone take a blade and turn it into a full flat grind it would be weaker but wonderful in the kitchen. As for sheaths for these, I've been tempted to just wrap the plastic in leather, but ive also seen folks making these Nordic style knives with wood first, to hold the blade, and then wrapping the wood with leather, so the bottom part of the sheath is leather wrapped wood, and the top is just leather holding the handle in place. One youtuber that i watch often is RustLegion and he does these kinds of sheaths very often. Loved the video!
Lol..I just don't have the tools or skill to change a grind...but hope springs eternal. I have seen the wood inserts before, and it works great. I'll have to check out that channel. Thanks for watching and commenting. always appreciated. Be safe
That's a great job! I'll have to spend a lot more time attending the university of Google before I attempt to make my own sheath, very well done!!! Yes, if you like the shape of the handle, why change it? Looks good.
Love your content. Cool Channel. Great Opinel Mod which brought me to your channel ...I dig that Mora too ..screwed one Up years ago n got me a New one Last year ...keep Up the great work
I did the same a couple years ago. I made 2. Antler for one & i made a 2nd out of hickory stacked n waxed leather combo. Though i used a rotary tool whuch made things much easier. Lol
Nothing wrong with voice over after, I see lots of folks that do that for their videos. Gives them a bit more control too on what they want to say and such
There is another Japanese saw called kataba. I have not yet tried this kind of saw. It looks like a kataba would be good for knife handle making, since you can make deep cuts with it. There is only a very short reinforcing back that will not get in the way. Kind regards from Bengt in Sweden
Your videos and commentary are fun. You have a great can-do attitude. If you tackle another wooden knife handle, you might want to consider using boiled linseed oil, but make sure it's food-safe boiled linseed oil. The hardeners they put in the stuff you get in the hardware store are poison. Not that I expect you'll chew on your knife handle, but better to be safe. IK use Tried and True brand when I don't want to use the hardware store brands.
I do use linseed oil and it improves the grip alot. I did not here because truth be told, I wanted to strength the handle more. Was not sure of the wood taking any abuse...lol. thanks for watching, always appreciated. And you be safely out there
Great project! How does that acrylic work for using the knife hard? I would have done Teak Oil or some other kind of penetrating, drying oil for a good grip and more reliable moisture protection. Varnishes tend to make handles slippery and cause blisters under heavy use.
@@2ndchancegeorgeoh I meant I figured you’d like the blade shape and knew they sold mora 2000 blanks so I was hoping you’d make a George special after trying it lol
Oh btw if you wet the leather 1st, cover the knife in cling wrap, wrap the leather around the knife, clamp it down & let it dry. You'll find the process of making the sheath much easier.
This is really impressive freehand work. Where did you get the 2nd blade from? Did you buy it separately or was it taken out of another Mora? Because if the latter, it would be interesting to see how to get it apart without marring it
Howdy George! I think that is a great effort for a first time. Way better than I could have done and certainly functional! Is there any noticeable difference in weight between the original and the wood and leather?
As far as the leather is concerned: adjust the leather while it is damp and shape it - this can also be done with your fingers. It takes more time than with a folding knife. It looks completely wrong at the beginning, but it gets better over time and the end result isn't bad - the edges just aren't as sharp. and also sew wet. Another type of sewing would be cross stitch or end sewing (I don't know how to translate that from German) but cross stitch and baseball stitch are pretty similar and the main difference is the look. The other stitch, which I and Google don't know how to translate, is difficult, requires more skills, but offers no real improvement. All in all, a nice and good job.
Voice-overs, realtime narration, whatever you like. You're the man.
Lol..thankyou sir, much appreciated. You my friend be safe out there
Happy daze! Freezing here. Aahhaa a MORA man0man! Whittle away friend!

You just can't beat seasoned hickory wood handles George. Used a sledgehammer handle piece for my Helle Laplanda and a pine wood core sheath👍🏻
