My eyes are welled with tears as I look back at the time I first watched the film when it came out some 30 odd years ago. It was such a heartwarming film, one of the most thought-provoking films ever.
@@bachisback71 yes, Smoke, Kiss of the Spiderwoman, Wings of Desire, Sweetie, What we do in the shadows ..the film ‘Locke’ is new Nordic film..really, check that one out.cool..
Brilliant, brilliant movie. Never been much of a Harvey Keitel fan, but he is breathtaking in this movie. William Hurt fantastic as well. That shot of him pulling apart that bird for dinner with the Grandmother..just beautiful. Tom Waites in the background......they don't make them like this anymore.
this DOES make me cry, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. All they want is not to be alone on Christmas, and he makes the old lady so happy. Isn't that what it's all about?
Anybody have the clip of Keitel/Augie telling the story before this Wonderful depiction of the same story? It really adds to the richness of the story. And, yes, I cry in the middle of this every damn time. Beautiful.
Thank you, this is my favorite film, and the best actor, harvey, every time i see this scene i have necesity of cry, the move is beauty, the scene is beauty, the history is beauty and the music is beauty, thank you very much really
When auggie tells the story before this scene I always wondered how can you embrace a stranger and pretend like they are family? Then when I watch her give him a hug and look worried then smile I realized she wasn't duped, she knew exactly what was happening. A Well told and well performed piece.
thank you-- one of the greatest songs and one of the greatest movie scenes --ever!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you, thank you, thank you.. ive seen the movie many times--beautiful film -louis
James, I couldn't agree more. I am like Johnny Appleseed trying to spread the word on this film, must've told 1000 people about it no lie. No to be too overwrought about it but there's enough spirituality and soul in this movie to keep one coming back time and time again. Maybe I'm just still jazzed after seeing Mr Waits perform it in St Louis a few days ago.
Harvey Keitel should have gotten an Oscar for this. This part was tailor made with an Oscar written all over it. If Tom Hanks or someone played that same role, they'd have gotten an Oscar. The Academy doesn't seem to like Keitel. (See also: his not being nominated for "The Piano", even though it got EIGHT nominations; or for his role in "Bad Lieutenant"; or THIS!).
Harvey is one of the greats. Oscars don't matter. His monologue in Smoke is immortal, as is his chemistry with William Hurt in this film. Never to be forgotten
ვუყურებ და ცრემლი მადგება თვალს, ბრწყინვალე სიუჟეტი, შემსრულებლები და სიმღერაა! I look and tears come to my eyes, a brilliant story, a performer and a song!
@dkelly26666 Also, you don't see it in this clip, but he verbally TELLS this entire story before it is shown, and he does it in one long take, without ever cutting away. Then, when you see the story, you feel like you've ALREADY seen it, because he told it so well. Masterful. This should have gotten a writing Oscar, as well.
After watching it 5 or more times I had no idea that JERRY was doing Smoke! Lost my mind. Great movie. I have seen everything he has done since Taxi Driver. The one where he plays a sax player who gets shot and finds a box that's magical??? Cannot tell the end. LULU ON THE BRIDGE. Yet Harvey did at least 7 movies prior to taxi and over all 40-50
El primer acercamiento que tuve con Paul Auster, sin saberlo, fué con esta película. Luego, con el paso del tiempo, leí algunos de sus libros. Pero la película, y esta escena en particular, fueron una de las cosas que mas me emocionaron en mi vida. Gracias Paul Auster. Buen viaje!
Frank, The women to whom you are refering is Clarice Taylor and did play Heatcliffs mother on the Bill Cosby show. African-American actress for over five decades, performing on stage, radio, television, and in film; co-founder of Harlem's American Negro Theater.
Not just that but how he get's there in the first place, By some time after trying to return the kids wallet who stole a comic book from his store. At the end of the movie which I had seen many times the song "When smoke gets in your eyes" Most time just ejecting the dvd or not paying attention I was awoken by the fact that it was JERRY GARCIA! being a true dead head for some 40 years or more at the time it blew me away.
@PaddyGB Yup, my grandmother died last week and you never really realize how much some people mean to you until they're not here anymore. Oh well. It's a beautiful song and rest in peace grandma. You meant a lot to me.
"well that old woman sure was half blind and deaf but not THAT blind and deaf that she wld mistake a white man for her own grandson" ... touching story
@Popsalful It's very hard to explain, but the character Paul was writing Christmas stories,Auggie told him about going to see the shoplifters Grandmother on Christmas Day-This is where Auggie actually stole the camera that he uses for his daily photo project up to the present day in the story...I don't know if this really helps, but there it is! Best to you.
Jerry Garcia? How can I love this movie/song more. Can anyone who reads lips tell me what the Grandmother is saying? Whatever it is..her expressions say it more.
it's a while since i've seen the film, but ISTR augie as much as saying that granny knew what was going on, but why spoil a good time? she knew her grandson was bad, but she always hoped for the best - and augie couldn't dash the old girl's hopes, he played along with the 'ideal' story just to make her happy. augie took a camera from a stack and started his project
Maybe he felt entitled to take the Canon AE10 having bought a whole "bunch of stuff" (precooked chicken, veg soup, potato salad. Santa Clause he ain't. Doesn't wear red and isn't overweight.
My eyes are welled with tears as I look back at the time I first watched the film when it came out some 30 odd years ago. It was such a heartwarming film, one of the most thought-provoking films ever.
I’m spending Christmas alone watching this video. Great movie.
I'm spending Christmas alone watching this too. Love it
One of the greatest films I've ever seen.
And Waits song was the perfect ending.
Davvero! Un capolavoro! Il regista ha dimostrato una sensibilità straordinaria. Gli attori, superlativi!
@@bachisback71 yes, Smoke, Kiss of the Spiderwoman, Wings of Desire, Sweetie, What we do in the shadows ..the film ‘Locke’ is new Nordic film..really, check that one out.cool..
Movie "SMOKE" is love.
Great actors and story.
Especially the last scene and music is great.
Thanks for the excitement.
From Japan.

A beautiful song paired with a beautiful story. I can never get through it without getting teary-eyed. Thank you so much for the post!
I cry like a little baby everytime I watch this portion of the film. Tom Waits... He's unbelievable.
Cheers!
RIP Paul Auster. Thanks for this beautiful story.
I think this is one of the best movie finals ever, so touching, so well made, Tom Waits is perfect for this one. The story is incredible
Tears in my eyes..
This song makes me remember the finiteness of the life.
Let's enjoy our life.TODAY! NOW!
This is one of the greatest and most underrated movie ever. If u don't burst in tears while whatching the last scene u have no heart
Simple, gentle, leisurely, quiet...wonderful movie ! :)
Harvey Keitel amazing, I love him :)
Moving, absolutely beautiful story and clip. This is art, poetry, beauty, emotion and feelings at their best.
Totally agreed. A beauty ❤
I still love
this song
This movie
& it makes me cry wonderful beautiful tears
Watched this movie 2 days ago ... Still not over it what a beautiful experience it was ❤
Anybody have the clip of Keitel/Augie telling the story before this Wonderful depiction of the same story? It really adds to the richness of the story. And, yes, I cry in the middle of this every damn time. Beautiful.
RIP Paul Auster. I've never been to NYC and if I ever go it'll never be the one I've gotten to know from your books. It's gone and now so are you.
Um dos mais belos filmes de todos os tempos! Poesia, simplicidade, humanismo e beleza 🙏🏼 Não sei quantas vezes revi essas cenas ! 😥
One of my all time greatest "things" period. I love you Dad.
Thank you for posting this! Smoke is one of my favorite movies, and this scene is just brilliant! :)
Fantastic ending to a fantastic movie.
Thank you, this is my favorite film, and the best actor, harvey, every time i see this scene i have necesity of cry, the move is beauty, the scene is beauty, the history is beauty and the music is beauty, thank you very much really

Una verdadera joya de la literatura, del cine y de la música. Gracias mil por subir tal genialidad...
I'm not a big fan of Paul Auster, but the story that Auggie tells at the end (the one in the video) is beautiful. Thanks for posting this video!
Really like this move, but loved the ending ...classic Tom Waits

Wonderful movie, wonderful music mmmmmyyy god :)
i believe the correct title of the song is "innocent when you dream" a wonderful tune and a great film!
This is amazing. Wonderful film-making; wonderful singing.
This film is very underrated

+Augest West Harvey is awesome. Fearless.
Great actor, shines. Gotta look into some of his other work.
Augest West Bad Lieutenant is a good one. Of course Reservoir Dogs.
What an excellent film, and an excellent sequence. I wish you'd included the previous scene, too.
Emotional part was the credits. Jerry had just passed away and while they rolled the credits the music was Jerry singing smoke gets in your eyes.
Um poema belo em honra da vida!❤ A amizade! Ao coração! Obrigado! ❤
thank you for uploading this! just great!!! love the movie, love the ending!

Ouch... Many memories come to my head. I have to see the movie again :p
I bought that brand of camera used in 1994 so I didn't get a box. It was neat to see Smoke and know I had a camera like Auggie.
Brilhantes interpretações num filme mágico
Wonderful, wonderful movie. The perfect ending.
one of my favorite movies, one of my favorite songs
This movie is CLASS.
wonderful,especially the chicken scene!

32 años sin ver esta película. ¿donde estaban todos los entendidos para recomendarmela?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY OLE MAN.
Canon AE-1, my favorite!
one of my favorite movies...
i bawl EVERYTIME.
Grazie per la malinconia
Thanks... it's the most beautiful way to say Merry C. to anyone
same happened to me just in the middle of the story!!!
filmed in my neighborhood!!! BROOKLYN!
It could happen..... in NY.... it could happen
I have seen it in every library of my city... I think it is not difficult to find.
Épica simplicidade!
Sublime. O que move verdadeiramente a vida senão a beleza, a verdadeira amizade e o amor. Nada do ouro dos tolos.
"well that old woman sure was half blind and deaf but not THAT blind and deaf that she wld mistake a white man for her own grandson" ...
touching story
Non è un film: è poesia.
Was there ever a better movie ending?
2:15 I just noticed that that shot could have been inspired by the Rain Dogs album cover

I didn't know Paul Auster and Tom Waits did a movie... interesting
"You're innocent when you dream"... you can find it in the related videos ----->
Jerry Garcia? How can I love this movie/song more. Can anyone who reads lips tell me what the Grandmother is saying? Whatever it is..her expressions say it more.
bravo!
Merry Christmas
RIP Clarice Taylor.

you're innocent when you dream
Best part of the whole movie
Please, can anyone read lips? What is she saying, I know she knows it wasn't her son. From there. Damn, this is a beautiful movie
I agree
"and it's memories that i'm stealing"
He stole a camera! Never noticed that before!
yes, i made a mistake when i upload the video, sorry :S
Genial.
Meeting of giants (Auster, Wang, Keitel, Waits) - in a pill ;)
More time elapsed from when the video was uploaded than between 2006 and the release of the film.
Lindo!!!!!!!!+!!!!!!!!!!!!!+!!!!!!!!!!!
you can see it on youtube -only dubbed into Spanish! :~)
How can find the film anybody now?
"Innocent when you sleep" of Tom Waits
The movie is good, but this part of the novie is the best!
i have that litttle table at the end there
