- Highlights from an event celebrating the career of eminent historian Professor Sir Tom Devine.
Professor Devine was joined by Gordon Brown, former Prime Minister of the UK, for a discussion that explored facets of the nation's modern history at a crucial time for the country.
The event marked 45 years of academic service by Tom Devine to the Universities of Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Strathclyde.
I'm enjoying watching this -minute 26, so more than half way through, but I can help noticing that the only women participating in this fascinating debate have been the man's wife and a fleeting reference to Maggie Thatcher. This is no criticism of those involved in the debate but a reflection on the nature of Scottish society.
How many women have spent their lives researching Scottish history and how many do it nowadays? It is still a male dominated discipline with moves to get more women involved.
Most Women i know can't be arsed with politics or indeed History.
I am intensely interested in History especially our own. Tom Devine has a keen eye for the ever changing face of Scotland and its people. His observations on sectarianism are as valuable as Peter Taylor's.
Agreed!
@@alanbbrady8196 Dear Alan, I'm sorry that my response to your Post might seem a bit late, but it's because I've just read it . Your sweeping remarks about women "not being arsed about politics and history", grabbed my attention. Who's politics? Who's history ? My immediate response by way of this Post, has the unintended effect of ensuring your words are now, proven wrong.
