    The special effects team of Total Recall share their thoughts and memories on the seminal pic - from the almost disastrous x-ray scene, to the ‘smokey mattes’ approach for shooting miniatures and the final reactor shots.

    I don’t think people realize how incredibly amazing these practical effects were... ARE. This is and was amazing

    This movie stands on its own and did not need to be remade.

      The problem with the remake is that they cheaped out a lot.
      - They had the holographic collar instead of the mask, because superimposing a photo of an actor over the face of another is something anyone can do with their PC at home at no cost, while a 3D model of a mechanical mask with photorealistic details, that moves realistically and splits into horizontal slices is much more involved, time-consuming and expensive.
      - In the car chase sequence, every car uses exactly the same model, because, again, making one model and just doing CTRL+C and CTRL+V is easier and cheaper than making different models.
      - The complete lack of Mars in the remake is the major symptom of their stinginess, because creating a natural-looking landscape with only some artificial structures is way harder than creating a completely CG city, where every building is blocky, the curves are simple, and shapes can be stretched, combined and recycled.

      It wasn't a remake.
      It was based on PK DIck's original short story We Can Remember it for You Wholesale.
      That story was based on Earth with some events on Mars.
      Ron Shuset & Co decided to set Total Recall totally (pun) on Mars.

    Total Recall is one of my favorite sci-fi films. I remember being amazed by the special effects seeing it in a theater in 1990. It's funny with all the technology of today, Total Recall still looks more convincing than many films of the past 30 years!

    Those effects was made so perfect even now with CGI no one could do better.

    • @Nothing_Israel
      @Nothing_Israel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      A bit hyperbolic . Pretty sure even the people who made those effects would agree that if they had access to cgi they could have done better. The shot of Arnold on the train as the camera pulls away could have been better done with cgi as obviously the image becomes flat as they move the camera.
      But I think the practical effects used gives the film a unique surreal appearance- where things look fake but still beautifully strange.

    I've been dreaming (literally) about total recall miniatures effect this year. And not far enough 3 months ago this came out. It's like a dream comes true, TOTALLY. Thanks for making this video, much appreciated :)

    For a director who supposedly didn't care about the video market, he made sure they canceled the Letterboxed (Widescreen) LaserDisc version and only offered a full-frame version. It wasn't until the late 1994 LD that a Widescreen version was available (THX certified and AC-3 5.1 surround).

    At 5:55, he talks about using front projection to have the mutant people stepping out of a part of the miniature. Anyone know where would they have put the projector since the camera pulls all the way out? Is it hanging from above? And is there a one-way mirror somewhere in there too?

    • @DisckMedia

      If it's motion control they probably did multiple passes and comped them together. They could have blacked out the stage apart from the projection area and put it over in a comp

    • @SeanCC
      @SeanCC ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Where are the front projectors on the various faces in the Disneyland Haunted Mansion ride? It's the same principle. One of the most likely spots is behind the rocks on screen right.

    Sooo not used to seeing Michael Ironside playing a SUBORDINATE. Usually he’s the bad guy heavy(Scanners, Extreme Prejudice anyone?)
    But then again, as I have aged in life, Ronny Cox plays a better bad guy than than the good from Beverly Hills Cop.
    I was involved in the movie industry ... a long, LONG time ago on the production side. But if I had to do it over again I would have actually tried to become an actor just so I could work alongside these acting greats from the ‘80’s.

    Awesome.. i worked at MoPro we designed and fabricated a lot of the props used on “ Total Recall “ back when true artists and craftsman work on movies and TV. EEFFF the CGI B-S! When go spend my money at a movie. I don’t want it to look like a video game!

    Your age not allowing you to see this in the theatre, Or not having an idea to see it at all because of your age, (and making the attempt to sneak in), 10 yrs old in my case, not lending to researching upcoming theater releases and rather be running around with a football in the field (good stuff too) , really takes away the chance of seeing movie history being made doesnt it !? 20/20 hindsight babys a bitch. BUT I saw this on VHS when it came out so 10 yrs old seeing this on 21inch TV at 10 yrs old ?! Mind blown 😳 😐 💀 😑 👀 🤣

    As beautiful as it is that skeleton scene made no sense. All the dudes with the guns had to do was take one step to the side and shoot Arnold cause it's all played out in a few feet of space. Still one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made though.

    The film is a masterpiece, but I do take issue with the X-ray scene. Even if Quaid smashed through the X-ray, he would only be a few feet away from the guards who ran around to confront him. In the film, the X-ray security guards just stop chasing him after he jumps through, which makes absolutely no sense.

    • @bobrew461

      yes. it would've made more sense if a guard had grabbed him, then Quaid threw the guard through the x-ray scanner.
