Doctors making these kind of statements on sunscreen need to be fined or have their licence removed, you would think it goes against the oath they took. Pisses me off no end.
The oath is basically rubbish at the point; and most doctors are sadly only in it for the payday. I have a friend who was kicked out of several doctor's offices, and the illness was dismissed as "anxiety". This person was almost gone from Sepsis. They had one foot in the grave. It was the closest call.
@@jamesnylan I'm sorry about your friend. Theres a lot of "bad" doctors but i don't think it's fair to say most just care about the money. These people dedicate a huge portion of their lives to study medicine and at least in my country they don't make nearly as much as they should. I will always respect any career that actively helps society. There's bad people in every single career.
@@simplifykelsey People have a hard time with that kind of nuance because of survivorship bias, I think. I’ve been the victim of medical abuse and I’ve also been taught to advocate for myself from the example of some wonderful physicians who have cared for and worked with me, but if I only had the first experience, I’m going to have a pretty strong negative bias. Folks also have no idea how the healthcare system works here in the States, it’s the dang insurance companies and political lobbying that make it complicated- but insurance carriers aren’t out there posting BS. They have PR and legal departments 🤣
@@simplifykelsey I think a lot of it also has to do with not having enough resources. Where I live doctors have insane work loads, and when they don't have enough time per patient, and are constantly overworked and tired, mistakes happen. Sometimes those mistakes can be dangerous to patients. It benefits everyone when doctors get adequate pay and rest and are able to focus on their jobs. That being said, every single profession has people who are good at it and people who are bad at it, not trying to dismiss anyone's bad experiences, I know I've had some that left me feeling less than confident in the doctor I visited.

As an Australian aka a country with the most skin cancer I was so shocked to see in recent yrs the discussion about how ‘toxic’ sunscreen is. If you haven’t experienced Aussie sun you don’t know what toxic is 😂 sunscreen works and is essential in summer and winter. Absolutely crazy how people talk about it
I had eye freckles! Nothing like the threat of eyeball cancer to make me pull out all the hats, umbrellas for the summer. I live in the Pacific Northwest in Western US. We are having scary heat domes that absolutly highlight the need for sunscreen....we used to only have 6 weeks of sun!
“there is a way to do your own research” YES i studied biology (undergrad and grad school) and so much of class was spent teaching us how to find reliable sources, how to read research articles, how to look for bias, etc etc. statistics can be used to influence people in weird directions as well! it can be so catchy to say things like “oh wow products with water have 70% water”. if it feels funky it’s ok to question it! i wish everyone learned how to do proper research in grade school, would make the internet so much better.
Everyone used to groan about it (because it was a compulsory course regardless of your major) but this was a big part of what I taught in academic language - correct referencing first requires good references. Of course you can use Wikipedia and Google, but only as a starting point - not the whole source!
"In my opinion don't wear any makeup, it's probably better." Yeah as a programmer, in my opinion don't wear any clothes, because I got a rash once that was really bad and painful. I've concluded it must be the synthetic fibres fault, cause like they're made in a lab or something, and natural is always better, right? xD
That’s why I exclusively cover myself with natural, foraged poison ivy, no synthetic devil fibers will touch this skin again. Oh my graphically blistered skin? That’s just toxins leaving my body hon! It’s called a detox, look it up, sweaty💅
What he's really saying is, "don't wear sunscreen or makeup, come see me instead when your face is horribly aged from UV radiation; I'll fix you right up!😘" If he was a medical plastic surgeon I would think this was a seriously malicious way to drive up the number of people who will need reconstructive surgery after their skin cancer is cut out; it would be good for business.
@@galatea5455i commented something very similar lol but you don't even need to go that far: - not wearing sunscreen ages your skin faster, which adds more insecurities for people to want to correct with like, facelifts, fillers, and botox... so, plastic surgery. - not wearing makeup, in a society that has increasingly more and more insane/unrealistic beauty standards, will help a person notice all the small things that can be perceived as imperfections, which through evil marketing turn into deeply rooted insecurities, which "only" plastic surgery can "fix"...
The last video was so ridiculous, "I forgot my sunscreen but let me get out my huge bulk of shea butter, my bowl, my 2864 ingredients to COOK some" 🤦♀
This scares me so much that these doctors make videos, because people will just blindly believe it- and even defend their info just because they’re a doctor. Scary stuff.
What scares me more is that they are PROFESSIONALS. And making these ridiculous statements. It makes me second guess every doctor and what they lie about to us as patients behind closed doors
A few decades from now we will know how horrible sunscreen is! Open your mind to listening to opposing opinions! My kids wear hats, uv protective rash guards and we avoid the sun from 10:30 to 4pm. We spend thousands of hours outside a year literally and never have had sunburn thanks to the Lord!
Where I live in the US it is landlocked. A few lakes and very rural. If someone at the lake started pulling out bags of crap and heating it up everyone would think they’re cooking meth😂
A LOT of doctors in my area (mid US) have gone full qanon or jumped on other conspiracy theories. They have so much money, have been so privileged their entire lives, and are so incredibly out of touch that they do/say anything they want and nobody has ever told them to shut up.
Some people are soooo scared to just say facts straight up. It’s always “my opinion” or apologizing when stating a fact. So I appreciate James for unapologetically saying what’s correct and factual.
these people don't realize that plant extracts contain water too. If you look at new Korean labels, it is obvious that 100% extracts contains less that 10% of the actual plant. But I think many of us believed that misinformation at some point
It’s almost a rule of the internet at this point but if something is being demonised THEY’RE TRYING TO SELL YOU SOMETHING. It’s a pitch! It’s never legit and always involves lying.
I've even seen Chiropractors pretending to be medical doctors, who can write scripts. They go way out of line and give supposed "medical advice" about things that they have absolutely no knowledge of. The plastic surgeon you showed annoys me; and you are spot on about him being full of it with the sunscreen discussion. I dislike his videos every time they show up on my FYP. All of these "experts" should be on Quackwatch.
You should look up the founder of Chiropractics, Daniel David Palmer. He was without a doubt a quack, and it perfectly explains why chiropractics is the way it is today. Palmer started as a 'magnetic healer' and his first chiropractic adjustment 'healed a man, who was partially deaf, through a spinal adjustment'.
@@jodimyers410 Not surprising considering the founder of chiropractics was a 'magnetic healer', and the early philosophy was rooted in vitalism, naturalism, magnetism, and spiritualism. I remember seeing a social media chiropractor guarentee on his platform in 2020 that people wouldn't get COVID if they had regular spinal adjustments and took Zinc. It's criminal.
As an Aussie, I get so angry every time I hear someone say "chemical sunscreens are terrible". The alternative is worse, mate. I might be an exception, but mineral sunscreens break me out bad
The only thing is agree is that chemical sunscreen can break people with sensitive skin out (eg rosacea). But I have rosacea and I’m perfectly fine with say Bondi sands and LRP face sunscreens (chemical). Just because it’s called “chemical” it doesn’t mean it’s toxic lol. If it doesn’t work on their skin fair enough, just get mineral sunscreen.
I love the point you made about doctors. I'm a doctor, too. Of *psychology.* I can tell you how to move past specific childhood trauma through individualized therapy.. I have no idea what is best for your skin. Maybe see a *dermatologist.*
So glad I nvr followed the hype. Already have more mental issues just from using Facebook and Snapchat. Planning on getting rid of those now too but it's so addicting lol

I'm so sick of professionals acting outside their scope. A plastic surgeon is not a cosmetic chemist. A heart surgeon isn't a nutritionist. I'm a therapist and apparently everyone who went to 2 sessions of an online therapist is now an expert on mental health. I'm just tired. It erodes peoples trust in professionals and research, it's an abuse of power and they're always selling something.
So true. I’ve been in practice as a clinical psychologist for more than 30 years and long ago I learned that EVERYONE fancies themselves a mental health expert.
Agreed. My chiropractor and I spend part of my session each week laughing about all the weird internet chiros that, for example, know all about the uterus and female hormones or giving chickens adjustments or whatevs. It's a good laugh, but it's not my profession's reputation on the line😅
I make custom-made cosmetics and mostly work for tattoo studios. I had to explain soooooo many times to a tattoo studio that I could NOT make a custom sunscreen for their studio because it wasn't as simple as they thought it was. Thank you for saying how difficult and expensive it is to actually make sunscreen !!! ❤❤❤❤
@mmmmmmmmaria when it comes to tattoo studio , yes I make aftercare cosmetics, specific soaps, I had to make skincare to preserve tattoo colors as well . And for other people, it really depends on what kind of skin care they are asking for. But some things are really regulated like sunscreen, some exfoliants are as well, any medical use ointments. (Even if I test all of my formulas) those examples need very specific tests and certifications. I'm from France and we are extremely strict on that.
There's a common replacement called methylsomethingziosone 😅 anyway, it irritated the heck out of my skin, and the sensitive skin body wash I tried that used it has been discontinued! I was so itchy!

Flashback to when I bought some perservative free lotion, lip balms, and body wash from a person's online store out of her home. They arrived spoiled. Black mold in the lotion and one lip balm, threw those out. Other lip balm was rancid, tossed. Body wash was okay but the fragrance disappeared after two uses, tossed out. 😠 Hail to preservatives! 🙌🏻
That means she also did not sterilize anything. I was trained as an herbalist 30 years ago and I see a lot of "teachers" online that are going to successfully teach their students to brew deadly botulism
That makes me think of the pink sauce lady Chef Pi sending fresh preservative free food to customers in the middle of the summer in the US during a heat wave. Its best to make small personal batches of your own preservation free skincare, if thats your thing or you are allergic to the popular preservatives. You also may have to refrigerate those items.
i've bought natural skincare without preservatives and it was fine. her issue is that her workspace was contaminated, she didn't sanitize her packaging. but without preservatives, you do have to use stuff really fast
As someone who has an actual cancer diagnosis (Marginal Zone Lymphoma, which is a type of Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma), and is currently on what is called a 'watchful waiting' program (essentially my cancer is Stage 4, but I'm currently fairly non symptomatic so they don't need to jump straight to treatment), I asked my haematologist a metric fuck tonne of questions when I was first diagnosed. Everything from diet, nutrition, supplements, food additives to avoid, ingredients in skin care, hair care, household cleaners, etc. His advice (and this is one of the top Professors in the field of my particular type of cancer) was basically just try and eat a balanced diet, get some exercise a few times a week if you can, work on reducing stress levels, try and get a good night's sleep, use common sense when it comes to things like Covid and other viral or infectious risks, wear sunscreen, and essentially don't get sucked in by fear mongering when the evidence just isn't there.
It’s amazing that a bloke who very likely made the majority of his money convincing people to have major surgery, in order to put foreign objects into other peoples bodies. Many of which are themselves are linked to potential cancer risks, alongside rupturing, and infections. Would go on about how awful it is to put “chemicals on your body”. I have no issues with people wanting plastic surgery, and I know nothing about this plastic surgeon. For all I know he could only work on people who require medical intervention, maybe he hasn’t profited from other’s insecurities who would be willing to spend a lot of money and brave the risks of going under the knife in order to quash them. But somehow I doubt this. For a doctor to sit there and have the audacity to spout misinformation against any advice that a dermatologist would say really boils my piss.
qualifications mean nothing yet. qualifications + reputation + proven results are the ONLY thing people should believe when it comes to professionals of any kind! ESPECIALLY to do with health.
This is so accurate. I'm a biochemist we are taught to read research papers and the statistics that are used. So we know if they did some creative math. I watch you because I can get truthful information not just your opinions. Thanks James.

Only tangentially related, but I went to a wax salon once, and the waxer said my armpit hair was growing in different directions because I shave in different directions and waxing would fix that. I couldn't believe the AUDACITY of that lie. And the room was so hot, and she had to pluck so many hairs from my legs that she broke off. I never came back.

I live in AZ in the U.S. and quite literally we are taught very young that even riding in the car with your arm out the window with no sort of sunscreen can and WILL cause skin cancers later on in life. My adopted dad has spent the last 15 years having skin cancer removed from his face and arms on a regular basis. He was a framer for decades working in the AZ sun without sunscreen in the 70’s through the 90’s before getting an office/corporate job.
I can’t stress sunscreen enough !!! In the dating scene I’ve met SOOOOO many men who I ABSOLUTELY ASSUMED were older than me only to find out so many were 22-25 and easily looked 30 ! And with 27-30 year olds looking AT LEAST 35 !!! People do not realize the severity of damage the sun can do to your skin & health !

There are so. many. fantastic one liners in this video. I feel your frustration and I truly empathize. I recently found a comment section full of people spewing nonsense about sunscreen and felt that I would’ve been better off spending my afternoon having an aneurysm. After a childhood full of severe sunburns because no one in my family ever thought to give me sunscreen, I really felt it when you said “fine, go burn yourself, I don’t give a shit anymore.” At least they didn’t rub beef tallow all over me? “She either had an affair with her father… or she’s lying” took me out though 😭
This is completely out of nowhere but watching your videos, mostly ones about shit going wrong in the beauty world, has encouraged me to get up and take care of my skin today. I don’t know how long this will last, but I’m grateful you’ve been able to just passively give me that push, as I struggle with self care. Thanks dude!!
I'm fairly sure that olive leaf cell extract is probably a water-based solution. Also crazy that she acts like hydroxytyrosol is somehow a replacement for water in products, rather than just an antioxidant listed in the middle of the ingredient list, not even close to the base of the product. And I'm sure other OTP products are the same, because hydroxytyrosol is a solid at room temp.
I feel like I'm crazy because when I see super shiny people - even if their skin looks flawless, my brain doesn't go "OMG THEIR SKIN IS PERFECT, AM JELLY" - I'm like "Are they okay? Are they greasy? Slimey? Sweaty?" James always looks fabulous and since I know why he's shiny it doesn't make my brain confused but XD
I can’t get into the whole glass skin thing, either. I’ve got mild rosacea on my cheeks, so if I’m rocking shiny skin, I just look flushed & sweaty, like I just ran several miles. And I live with a dog & two cats who shed PILES of hair, all year round, so I need to keep my skincare as matte as possible, or I’ll be picking dog & cat hair off my face within 2mins of application😭
Chemical buyer who works for a big skincare company. Listen to James. Also, the water typically used is going to be as filtered and purified as possible. Even for our products not made for humans, we use a really expensive osmosis filter.
So true about ”glass skin”! I am in these skin care and tretinoin forums online, right, and regularly there are these people showing their ”new glass skin” compared to their old, supposedly dull skin. The ”dull” skin pic is taken with nothing on the skin in normal or even dark:ish lightning with mouth turning down. Then there is this ”after” pic taken in bright, but warm lightning and with their skin smeared in whatever shiny, goopy serum or lotion. That is their ”new glass skin”. And people go ”aaaah, oooh, the results!”. 😩
This feels like ppl saying that you are paying for vaseline when buying oitment... Most medicines are also mostly filler ingredients, but without them, your medicine wont work properly and might actually be bad for you.
The sunscreen ingredients in makeup is probably those foundations that have spf built in (though it’s barely any). Also love the lady who used to be a nurse practitioner but still uses her old scrubs/her dad was a plastic surgeon so he gave her his old scrubs
This is why I love this channel. James finally simplifies the problems with, “doing your own research” and how to find the right people for advice. He also emphasizes how important it is to understand what you’re reading. For example, I only use NSF rated collagen for a supplement. Now, if I didn’t read up on what the certificate meant I might of thought it was to judge the effectiveness of the product…NO! It only means that the product contains what it says it does, that’s it. I love how James is so popular and actually seeks out the experts to discuss beauty products❤
I'm not being shady but the first woman's terror at water in skincare when her 'before skin' was clearly just desperate for some hydration is wild to me. How is a practising MD not under investigation for spreading dangerous misinformation?! (is he an MD even?)
I genuinely can’t stand the misinformation with the chemical/mineral sunscreen topic. I used mineral sunscreen for ages because I have sensitive and acne prone skin, but my skin was still breaking out badly while using it. Took me a long time to realize it was something in mineral sunscreen that was causing the reaction. No one’s skin is the same, I’m pretty sure I’m sensitive to zinc or something because the same thing would happen when I used Head & Shoulders.
New game... We all take a shot of water each time James has to say "sunscreen" in this video... Stay hydrated, friends 🤘 ...and terrify the woman in the first short, obvs 😇😂
The store I work at sells scrubs and lab coats. And stethoscopes. It's campus bookstore but maybe we need a sideline in selling "the influencer fake medical credentials kit"?
I'm glad people are becoming more aware of skincare and use of sunscreen (myself included). Solariums and tanning beds have been banned from commercial use here in Australia because skin cancer is so prevalent here. There have been national campaigns since I was young highlighting the use of properly tested sunscreen to combat this so it's quite baffling to watch people in this video concocting their own fake sunscreens. At first I thought you were going to discuss that influencers were avoiding water in skincare because they fear that deadly di-hydrogen monoxide hahah
Your comments on research methods are so spot-on that I’m going to show them to my class! College students use Google instead of academic databases because it’s so much easier, and many teachers actually recommend reading the abstract and conclusion only to judge a study. That’s fine if your goal is simply to evaluate if the study is relevant, but tragically you do indeed have to read the whole thing if you actually want to understand it.
7:54 Also, I don't want to be that person, but based on his skin, he's not been using *any* sort of sun protection for like ever, so I think it's interesting he thinks he's qualified to give advice on sun protection

@flowerpower3618 Completely understand your point! I live in the UK myself, so I wasn't commenting on the tan (spf doesn't prevent getting a tan) or the pinkish hue, but on the fact that his skin looks sun-damaged. Also because he clearly doesn't understand how spf works yet still gives advice on it 😌

I was working in chemical company for a brief moment, my role was to mix powders in a professional chemical mixers. Mixing powders took from 1 hour to many hours alone. Not to mention making emutions, water ot fat based, is equally long and complicated. Emulsifying whatever cosmetics home with a spoon for one minute is not only unhygienic, but also the slurry you produced is not properly mixed. This may lead to differences in the end product concentrations of your active ingredients (if they are even active anymore bc I assume you dont have a proper chemical equippment and wrong transportation may destroy thes ingredients), but also it may create a pockets of highly concentrated substances causing irritations or in some cases chemical burns.

As an Australian aka a country with the most skin cancer I was so shocked to see in recent yrs the discussion about how ‘toxic’ sunscreen is. If you haven’t experienced Aussie sun you don’t know what toxic is 😂 sunscreen works and is essential in summer and winter. Absolutely crazy how people talk about it
Yes! Winter too! People don't know that snow can reflect UV rays!

“there is a way to do your own research” YES
i studied biology (undergrad and grad school) and so much of class was spent teaching us how to find reliable sources, how to read research articles, how to look for bias, etc etc.
statistics can be used to influence people in weird directions as well! it can be so catchy to say things like “oh wow products with water have 70% water”. if it feels funky it’s ok to question it!
i wish everyone learned how to do proper research in grade school, would make the internet so much better.
Yes. I wish I had this knowledge.
Everyone used to groan about it (because it was a compulsory course regardless of your major) but this was a big part of what I taught in academic language - correct referencing first requires good references. Of course you can use Wikipedia and Google, but only as a starting point - not the whole source!
"In my opinion don't wear any makeup, it's probably better."
Yeah as a programmer, in my opinion don't wear any clothes, because I got a rash once that was really bad and painful.
What he's really saying is, "don't wear sunscreen or makeup, come see me instead when your face is horribly aged from UV radiation; I'll fix you right up!😘"
If he was a medical plastic surgeon I would think this was a seriously malicious way to drive up the number of people who will need reconstructive surgery after their skin cancer is cut out; it would be good for business.
@@galatea5455i commented something very similar lol but you don't even need to go that far:
- not wearing sunscreen ages your skin faster, which adds more insecurities for people to want to correct with like, facelifts, fillers, and botox... so, plastic surgery.
- not wearing makeup, in a society that has increasingly more and more insane/unrealistic beauty standards, will help a person notice all the small things that can be perceived as imperfections, which through evil marketing turn into deeply rooted insecurities, which "only" plastic surgery can "fix"...

New game... We all take a shot of water each time James has to say "sunscreen" in this video... Stay hydrated, friends 🤘
...and terrify the woman in the first short, obvs 😇😂
Leave my preservatives, I don’t want mold and bacteria in my skincare.
I’m 97% British DNA. I live in southern Calif and use 70% spf everyday of the year. I never deliberately go in the sun but still have tan skin. Some British folks are pink but more warm undertones. Plus he might be part Indian being from the uk
@flowerpower3618 Completely understand your point! I live in the UK myself, so I wasn't commenting on the tan (spf doesn't prevent getting a tan) or the pinkish hue, but on the fact that his skin looks sun-damaged. Also because he clearly doesn't understand how spf works yet still gives advice on it 😌
You are talking about the anti sunscreen doctor?
My first thought about him was he is probably one of the first candidates for skin cancer. He better stay in his office so he doesn't prove himself wrong as he ages.
I was brushing my teeth when you said, “Either she had an affair with her Dad…” and now I’m wiping toothpaste off my mirror. 😂
Whenever someone says, "Hear me out," I tend to tune out.
Love your content and whatever you choose to put out! Just wanted to say that when I watched you doing your skincare alongside (even quietly whilst talking/reacting), it convinced me to invest in a decent skincare and do some research 🥰 I now love my morning and evening skincare routines and that time of day reminds me of watching you 👍🏼
Correct James. Companies also PAY Google to have their information on there. We can't truly just google it.
Thank you for being a rational, voice of reason amongst all the influencer lies ❤
Can y' all hear it? It' s Hippocrates turning over in his grave in Larisa🇬🇷. Even from the opposite shore of the Mediterranean, it' s perfectly audible🤦🏻♀️.
🧛🏻♀️🖤
James, thank you for schooling this community with facts and science. You're amazing. 💙
The sunscreen agreement drives me crazy!!! I had a mother and daughter at work tell me that you shouldn’t put sunscreen on specially just your face. Mom was shopping for foundation. She liked bare minerals of course, but she learned that sunscreen is bad if put on your face. I was too flabbergasted to ask more questions
YES I'm on a break between classes at University and I needed some entertainment
I get so frustrated with the fake factual information because I see people believing it daily!
