And never, never, never go out without a couple of energy drinks... You can outrun any zombie except ferrals, and you can duck & dodge & run and get away from them to a building with a ladder.
Find where in a building a plague heart is then go outside and call in a drone strike near that corner/wall where the plague heart would be. Instant death to plague heart, no ammo spent.
I love this game because there are so many ways to play it. You can literally make strategies to suit your own playstyle. Too many games overlook this aspect of reaching a broader audience.
One tactic I use when surrounded on top of a structure is to use the Stuck option on your radio it works with or without being in a vehicle, it won't put you miles away from the horde but if your lucky you'll land on the other side of a wall, barrier where they don't immediately see you then... Run!
@@KnightKnowledge I just figured this out last night like your friends I'm playing again for the first time in years and playing my first nightmare game. Pleasent Ridge I'm in this trailer park by the starter base completely surrounded by a pack of wild Ferals, climb up a double wide and I'm up their trying to pull off any headshot and the ferals we're having no part of it, they move so fast and even when they stop they allways manage to park their heads in a spot you can't aim on so I'm contemplating how the hell I'm getting out alive and you know what they say about necessity lol
@@andrewwashere82 I did it just the other night I was at the bounty brooker surrounded by plague ferals and 2 blood Jags, no health no stamina, no car lol
How come no one ever recommends molotovs on these videos? I can’t express enough how clutch they have come in taking out hordes of zombies without making much noise to attract more zombies like guns do
I have a couple of lesser known tips as well. For one you can put rucksacks into your inventory. All you need is to have a trader. Either one that's called via trade depot or enlisted through friendly/allied enclaves. Open up the trade menu and push the equip/unequip button on the rucksack and it will be "unequipped" into your inventory. If you want to deposit them into your storage you will need to "equip" them back into the rucksack slot or it will be put in the misc items slot of your locker. Number 2 is that if you cant open a door but there is a large enough window leading into the building you can silently break the glass with an arrow. It will only make about as much noise as killing a zombie with an arrow. Number 3 is don't underestimate the scouting skill. I see many people talking about stealth which is good and definitely useful for quick searching buildings. However the scouting skill is good for just about everything else. Showing you where all lootable containers are when indoors can save you from some headaches as well as when attacking infestations it will let you know where in the building the zombies are clustered in so you can more easily pull them where you want to eliminate them or finding that last zombie to clear it out. And enemies don't show up on your mini map without the scouting skill
Bouncing borises are also super useful against Juggernauts. They can stagger and even kill them. I used to think they were hot garbage but I re-tested them about a month ago for the heck of it and was pleasantly surprised by the work they put in.
I enjoy watching your SoD2 videos. You have a very good way of presenting the information where your not a chatty Kathy and you get right to the point. Also the info you give isn't just recycled information that other channels constantly give. Thanks for your hard work and keep it up!
Nice video I like the way you present your information. You have a lot of good tips and the only one I would add is fire. I have played for approximately 2000 hours and tested numerous things. A typical load out includes health and stamina items along with a few lures like firecrackers and of course fire. Fuel bombs are my preferred method of BBQ death and I always have them. The ammo tip is nice but latter on in the game you will find weapons that can hold enough ammo that carrying extra is redundant. I read a comment that stated that you deserve more subs...I agree.
Most vehicles and specific objects don't allow ferals to crawl up. They'll hide their head by colliding it into the object you're one so shoot them in the back and it will make an opening.
I respectfully disagree with a couple of the points. - I feel durability shouldn't be overlooked. Granted, the more durability you have, the more it takes to repair it. However, it also lasts longer when in the field. So many times I had to return to base or to an Outpost to repair a weapon, just because I had one or two engagements with zeds and the weapon is now yellow or straight out broken-red. -That said, the rebar blade is the best sword in the game, even though it uses more stamina than I'd like. But the rest of the pros outweigh that con. The grasscutter is also a good second, but comes up short when compared to the Rebar Blade. Even the durability is low, I also like the Ultralight axe. Even thought the stats say it's average, it seems to be more than the stats say it is, with more and faster swings, numerous dismemberment/insta-kills, and low weight. -The sledgehammer is the best Heavy weapon, because the pros it has vs the slightly slower speed(ever so slightly because Heavy weapons are just slow). The knockdown (and alot of the time knockout) factor makes it the best. -For Blunt weapons, it is the Freedom Ringer or the Apocalypse Bat, if you can get them. If not, then the Transmission Mace or Ancient Mace. The weapon choices should be for a specific type of combat. Blades for insta-kill/cripple, Blunt for knockdown/stun, and Heavy for crowd control/raw damage.
Good info very informative I tried the hardest mode but once you run into that tripple feral horde Bro it's all over much less the humans that can one shot you!! Still u showed me some things I never thought would work thanks! 👏🏽👍🏾
So ive only played on nightmare mode, so i cannot answer for the differences, but some of the strats i use are: standing on some vehicles and bldgs will cause aggro'd zeds to freeze and yell at you, but not reach you (including ferals and juggs), silencers are valuable. A silenced .22 draws very little attention. Swordplay + a high lethality bladed weapon are valuable. Stamina is required if you want to live, so finishing a zed in 2, rapid slashes is far better than beating a zed down and performing a finisher. Try to get a .50 cal weapon as soon as you can. You wont be using this yourself. Your community members do not require ammo in order to defend the settlement. Having a .50 at home, equiped on a survivor not controlled by yourself, makes incomming juggs a joke. You ear influence very fast, especially when playing with friends, so dont be afraid to buy everything you want. Parts, vehicle fuel, and vehicle repair kits are highly valued items. If you dont stock up on these, there will be times where they will be an issue.
@@KnightKnowledge so ive used it myself, and gotten surrounded by 5 hordes and 2 juggs, and i remember being surprised as to how much attention it grabbed, since before using it myself, my only experience with it was having a survivor follow me with it equipped and having him remove plague hearts for me. They draw considerably less aggro than the player for sure.
I’d also add that you should never stick around for horde invasion of your base. The chance that one of your base citizens gets killed is extremely high even if your good at killing freaks. Just let the base defend itself and sacrifice the 3 ammo.
I have a 12 man base with 6 survivors sporting BFG's and the rest with raider AR 15s. Juggernauts and any other zombie stands no chance. I've seen many folks talk about managing noise to reduce threat because they're fearful of a nightmare zone siege but to me they aren't that bad.

It all veries based on personal pref. I like to use a bladed weapon with high lethality, and the swordplay skill. Slice em up real quick and move on before the other zeds can come investigate the noise. Plus dismemberment causes a slight "stun" that makes taking on multiples very safe.
1. Sewing with backpacking and resourcefulness so I can have additional health and carry 8 strong painkillers. 2. I'm swapping outposts on any difficulty because you can't have enough inventory space to bring everything back anyway, so it's better to maximize ammo and grenades. I also like lite load-outs with marathon skills, because that helps to outrun many problems.
Stealth + Gunsling are the best skill combo to bring in higher difficulty if armed with repeating crossbow it's easier to clean infestations and whoop a trio of Ferals without causing a horde. Never bring followers in missions that consist of fighting NPC enclaves. Scentblocks, one of the most broken consumables in the game, it renders you (almost) invisible to any zs or freaks and it lasts 4-5 mins, enough to clean 2-4 plague hearts even more without getting ganked. Reversing hordes with your car, it won't destroy the vehicle. Helping rewarding NPCs till they become Allies, not those assholes or beggars who can't look after themselves they ain't giving you shit in return. Dealing hostile npcs: Gunslinging with high .cal, 2-3 headshots(including while they're struggling on the ground) will kill them but if you wanna play safe snipe them on a high ground with cover where the zeds won't reach you like billboards, use long range 7.62 or .50s.
The parking cars in front of gates at your base trick has one flaw Juggernaunts can bash them out the way and on occasion i have noticed the game respawns them away from the game after say 3-4hrs if its preventing attacks.
I wouldn't mind playing nightmare if the hostile enclaves weren't terminators that eat bullets and can instant kill you. It's already annoying in dread zone, which is what I'm sticking with for now, but atleast I have a chance to get back up and take cover. The last time I tried nightmare, I'd get downed with an instant headshot and then immediately get shot to death before I have a chance to mash and get back up. That was a while ago though, so I dont know if that was tweaked with the juggernaut update.
@@KnightKnowledge Yeah it's tough. Even on dread zone I tried taking out a hostile enclave with a shotgun and got wrecked. I would've been dead 10 times over if it was nightmare, but eventually I said screw it and just left them alone. Didn't want to lose my character and waste even more supplies.
Hey alpha, try facing a horde of only plague juggs and ferals on day 2 as well as you can't heal yourself if you get injured, you can't sleep because you have no one else because you have exiled everyone else and allow nobody else to join, if you have no coffee or expresso it's game ove and you have to restart because if your stam gets too low and you forget to drink it you'll never get your stam back.
As a solo player in Nightmare mode, Scent block is your Best friend when clearing out Plague Hearts and Zombait to kill those Hostile Enclaves. I always take a gun with extra stack of ammo, snacks or energy drinks, healing items and fuel, never came across any undrivable vehicles so far in this game
I have 16 so think it should all be the same I just wanted to know your full render settings did you customize anything or do you use the default 1080p60fps render settings. (render with gpu or cpu?)
I've only been playing on dread difficulty and only just now maxed out a character with the close combat specialty. Which is just using the close combat knife, no melee weapon. You can execute front facing zombies.
Molotovs. bring Molotovs Most of the enemy u fight will be hordes in nightmare zone. Additionally, firecracker is a livesaver. even when u climb up the car surrounded by zombies, or when u return to car to put loot into trunk. U can direct numerous zombies away from your car with firecracker
I know this very late, but free up home base slots and don't waste space on bed facilities. They are useless. It only stops the community members from complaining, many experiments have been to show its smarter to use the available slots for other things then for beds, including outposts. Stamina is key in higher difficulties. Learn zombie fighting patterns. Exploit the higher ground. Watchtowers are also not useful, when your people have good to great guns. Gunslinger aim swap. Unequip melee weapons and stay with just knife for faster executions. Heavy weapons can fend off ferals quite handily when proficient. Cars block holes in base fortification. .50 cal guns can hurt Jugs the same in the belly as it does for headshots. Crossbows can break windows to allow entry into a building, if the doors are locked. Conversely, if one door is locked try another, chances are its unlocked. Lastly if you want to play to learn or just have fun then add me and let's take back the town from the plague! AcenMax5 xbox Be safe and never give up survivors! End of Transmission...... .... static.....

I had tried playing hard mode twice and my follower keeps dying. So use a tactic by doing a mission of escorting that person to that destination. Instead of taking him/her to the designated site I would take them along with my follower to the heart plaque and destroy it. It was tough by all three of got the red plaque, The person who I was supposed to take to that designated area got the most red plaque all the way 80%. In the end all my follower died with me remaining left. I thing I will try hard mode one more time but this time I will put robzombie at hard and resource and community at normal mode. Is this consider cheating. The game mode said if I changed from hard to normal I will loose all bonus upon completing the game. I had beat the game in normal mode at the start of the story but just wanted to try a hard level. This game makes it harder than Days Gone. I usually play legendary mode in Fall Out and Elder Scroll. Thx for your tips and tanks Ill give it a try
I enjoy using the crossbow as well, but there are times that the single-shot, slow reload speed isn't practical in nightmare difficulty and am glad I brought a silenced gun instead!
@@KnightKnowledge You should try to get the Quick Shot Crossbow from a trader, it has a 10 bolt mag and is semi-automatic. This is really op, also because bolts are so cheap to craft and you collect some back
@@KnightKnowledge you'll basically need to go to every wandering trader. Occasionally it will be one that sells the Echo X1, X2 and the X3 which is the repeating crossbow. Car armor isn’t necessary, the smart move is to be at home base as little as possible. Chose an outpost to be your main hub of operations and only go home to drop off rucksacks.
My load-out on nightmare mode consists of: 3x painkillers, 3x Energy drinks, 3x Fuel bombs or molotovs, 3x ScentBlock. With Army Issue backpack + Melee Weapon: Bastard of Belleau Wood + Ranged Weapon: Prepper's 10/22 (51 round capacity) fitted with an Advanced suppressor. With Sniper Tower support & Artillery Strike support.
Try getting atleast two ammo outposts, get the Trader facility to summon an ammo trader, buy from enclaves and use the radio to find more ammo rucksacks
Dealing with ferals is pretty easy. If you can’t get a headshot then use blunt mele. Swords are garbage in nightmare, quick executions and blunt weapons are the way to go.

My friend and I tried to take out a faction and even tho we had the jump on them WITH shotguns, it was a very difficult fight!
Dante Tirado what I do is spam zombait on them, take some scent block, and watch the show
@@KnightKnowledge Yeah it's tough. Even on dread zone I tried taking out a hostile enclave with a shotgun and got wrecked. I would've been dead 10 times over if it was nightmare, but eventually I said screw it and just left them alone. Didn't want to lose my character and waste even more supplies.
@@succulentpotato8150 I've seen this method mentioned a lot. I guess I'll give it a try the next time I play
Dante Tirado well if u play on xbox then u can join me but I don’t have a mic
Congrats on 1k subs keep up the good work
Thx for the good advice. How did you get this grey camouflage hoodie for your survivor ?
It's random apparel that you can loot from any container :)
@@KnightKnowledge Thank you ! :)
Real Talk, this game is STILL too EASY! Nightmare got NOTHING on me!
lol; the last time I played in Nightmare, I spent a good twenty minutes just cursing and going "nonononononononono" ^^
As someone who is currently going through a lone wolf warlord legacy challenge on nightmare mode.. you have no idea
@@sunkeeper8009 jesus why do that to yourself!
GTFO
As a solo player in Nightmare mode, Scent block is your Best friend when clearing out Plague Hearts and Zombait to kill those Hostile Enclaves.
"Park our extra cars, in front of our side Entrances, to prevent zombies from entering the base"
GATHER ALL THE CARS! MAKE A CAR WALL!
EDIT : Subscribed, helped me a lot, didn't even know you can climb on Cars. lol
Glad it helped! I used zombait the other day, worked pretty well!
I always take a gun with extra stack of ammo, snacks or energy drinks, healing items and fuel, never came across any undrivable vehicles so far in this game
Maybe I'm just unlucky in nightmare mode 😅
Haha yeah, sounds like you are😂
How did you make this video so short yet so informative? :)
Glad you liked it; I'm a technical writer, so short and to the point is natural :)
artilery outpost 1st, bring a loooot of juggernaut. then astalavistaaa
Yes! A well placed artillery shot will eliminate those jugs
Hey John, I was wonder what is your render settings? Your videos looks so clean!
what would you like to know in particular? I have most of it set to default (Vegas Movie Studio 15) at 60fps
I have 16 so think it should all be the same I just wanted to know your full render settings did you customize anything or do you use the default 1080p60fps render settings. (render with gpu or cpu?)
@@xcMmogg1 everything is default ;) 1080p60fps, cpu rendering
@@KnightKnowledge thanks man!!! Great State of Decay videos
Can’t tell you how many communities I’ve wiped out with everybody dying lol
This is why I only play Lethal difficulty with friends! The AI isn't good enuf unfortunately
4:43 what is this move? Has it been changed or removed? (I just picked this game up last month, haven't seen it before)
I believe you're referring to the quick finisher of the maxed out cardio skill Powerhouse.
@@KnightKnowledge appreciate it!
I've only been playing on dread difficulty and only just now maxed out a character with the close combat specialty. Which is just using the close combat knife, no melee weapon. You can execute front facing zombies.
Molotovs. bring Molotovs
Most of the enemy u fight will be hordes in nightmare zone.
Additionally, firecracker is a livesaver. even when u climb up the car surrounded by zombies, or when u return to car to put loot into trunk.
U can direct numerous zombies away from your car with firecracker
Fuel bombs are the best.
@@BenignAndaHalf definitely. Fire bombs spread further and faster than molotovs.
AcenMax5 xbox
Be safe and never give up survivors!
End of Transmission...... .... static.....
If you lack beds, doesn't it make them not regain fatigue (as quickly?)
Willie Pete grenades are very good against plague hearts
Definitely! It's too bad we can't craft them or obtain them reliably!
@@KnightKnowledge yea
I love nightmare mode it s challenges but the curser of map on the road itsconfusing and killing me ..because to many zombie on the road..oh one tips if you and you guard close call to death just exit to main game ..it will help you ..your hero will not death ..
Thx for your tips and tanks Ill give it a try
how did u get the golden sword btw
do you have a timestamp for that sword you're talking about?
@@KnightKnowledge its the first 30 seconds intro part if u pause it at 030 its the best view of it
@@TheEmperorHD its the katana machette, you get it as a rare drop from plague heart
Ok is that prison Mike??? No wonder you are winning the nightmare mode.
I promise that crossbow is the best ranged weapon in the game. You can kill the zombies silently and it won't attract any zombies.
This is really op, also because bolts are so cheap to craft and you collect some back
@@kingpin580 i've never encountered one yet.. hopefully soon!
I have those crossbows too.. it is so goddamn good.. i can take out an infestation without them knowing it..
@@KnightKnowledge you'll basically need to go to every wandering trader. Occasionally it will be one that sells the Echo X1, X2 and the X3 which is the repeating crossbow. Holds 10 rounds and even without gunslinger has a reasonable reload time. Also they occasionally carry the bolt crafting kit facility mod which increases arrow production at the workshop.
What is the best trait to recommend?? On dread and nightmare zone
I don't particularly spend time looking at traits. I just make sure the ones they have aren't negative ("causes fights more"). I had a friend spend 30-45 minutes finding random members with the Unbreakable trait; i'd rather just spend the time playing ;)
@@KnightKnowledge I got an unbreaking and high altitudes traits on my one survivor but after I finish the. Warlord I accidentally deleted that character ......now I'm just looking for .just keep on going traits for heavy weapon user hehe
@@justice4736 Noooooooo; lol
I never go in to destroy hearts park outside chuck granades in windows
Nice strategy!
Most important tip of all complete builder and trader or builder and warlord legacies in low difficulty mode then using that play nightmare.
those perks dont scale up, if you beat them on dread, dread and down gets the perk, not nightmare or lethal
parking cars in front of entrances works until that juggie trying to get in destroys them
Car armor isn’t necessary, the smart move is to be at home base as little as possible. Chose an outpost to be your main hub of operations and only go home to drop off rucksacks.
General Zod is always the answer
KNEEL!!!!!!
If you have the bolts to spare, should you try to bolt a plague juggernaut to death
I actually did, it took forever and about 50+ bolts. It was hilarious, but time consuming
Your intro kinda sounds like a Jets Pizza ad lol
Just yell at ferals through your monitor and they will get sad
My load-out on nightmare mode consists of: 3x painkillers, 3x Energy drinks, 3x Fuel bombs or molotovs, 3x ScentBlock. With Army Issue backpack + Melee Weapon: Bastard of Belleau Wood + Ranged Weapon: Prepper's 10/22 (51 round capacity) fitted with an Advanced suppressor. With Sniper Tower support & Artillery Strike support.
Me playing sod2 on nightmare getting 2 aks in one hour with my friends screaming at me
But how do you not run out of ammo?
Try getting atleast two ammo outposts, get the Trader facility to summon an ammo trader, buy from enclaves and use the radio to find more ammo rucksacks
@@KnightKnowledge Ah, thanks
Firecrackers. You're welcome.
3:56 what's that gun?
It's like a Pyro launcher from the independence pack idk the name
Hi John Wick
I hate ferals :(
They are easy to kill in nightmare mode from afar but if its close range shit good luck
Dealing with ferals is pretty easy. If you can’t get a headshot then use blunt mele. Swords are garbage in nightmare, quick executions and blunt weapons are the way to go.
Ferrals cannot climb on cars
How can these tips help me when this fking game FREEZE AND CRASH all the time
Try not to be hostile to other enclaves because fighting AI is hard cuz they legit have Aim bot, and one of my characters died. R.I.P Mia
I almost never attack enemy enclaves in Nightmare+ difficulty unless I'm playing with friends!
There mustve been a patch or something for SOD2 where Jugs can't get through doors because a Horde with 2 Juggs a screamer and a Feral got through the door and they wrecked 80 of my team
I noticed tonight that juggernauts were able to get inside buildings as well. Unpleasant 🤣
I purchased this game on steam today - waited for the download - tried to login - Microsoft says my email account is already in use ??? Everytime !! I have hundreds of games . I dont have an XBox I hate this company soooooooooooo much . Fail ! !
Mods i use mods
Yeah a nightmare mode wouldn't be difficult if the game wasn't so ignorantly glitchy they need to actually patch all of the problems with the game instead of adding all these stupid Bounty broker updates that are just garbage and actually fix the game so we can play it without it being unplayable
Is dudes tips are pointless his friends are not beating this game without using exploits on nightmare mode simply because game has not had the proper patches with all the constant updates towards Bounty Brokers instead of fixing actual glitches and for him to say so is just a fabrication he might get herd mentality like followers to back him up but that's still no reality no one is beating this game on this difficulty without using exploits and cheats and Community editor
Sorry to hear that you're having such a hard time with the game. Not that they need to be defended, but they don't see the point of cheating and enjoy the challenge.
@@KnightKnowledge yeah just like I said you would try to claim your not using exploits or cheats when literally everyone does not because the video game is difficult at this difficulty but because it's in such a deplorable unplayable condition that the only way to make it to the end is factually by cheating or using exploits teamwork alone and legitimate logical gameplay will not work
