Francesca’s entire storyline in the book can’t be done now. Absolutely none of it can be the same when they erase Michael, AND show her having a visible reaction to Michaela immediately after she marries John. It’s all been destroyed for what feels like pandering. And if anyone tries to call me a homophobe, then just admit you never read the book.
I feel so bad for John. They had such a cute relationship in part one, and they threw it away for nothing. Why not make a new character to be inclusive instead of using characters that we adore.
The showrunner absolutely read the books, including Francesca's story in "When He Was Wicked." The showrunner absolutely knew book fans in particular would be furious about the genderswap. The showrunner absolutely understood the effect and impact of showing Francesca's underwhelming reaction to her wedding kiss and her star struck reaction to meeting Michaela. In the novel Francesca has two great loves. The Bridgerton Netflix series is saying John and Francesca have an easy going platonic love in their romantic relationship, but the real love is or will be between Francesca and Michaela. They want new fans to ooh and ah Francesca and Michaela and wipe out any remembrance of the hetero relationship between Francesca and John. If the showrunners cared about that relationship, they would not have included Francesca's odd reaction on her wedding day. They want the girly girl ultra feminine Francesca to always have been gay or queer. That's what they want.

The best book to show transition i ever saw is "The Untamed". I watched the show first and now reading the novel and let me tell you... Whoever was responsible for the casting, the director and the actors all read the source material! Whole conversations and scenes are the same, like copy-past, and some thoughts of me got confirmed after I read those scenes. The actors did such a divine job in portraying their characters, you can read their thoughts, even tho they don't say anything. A few things of the story got changed (instead of a possesed arm it is a blade spirit) but the important things, like relationships between characters are the same. I'm halfway through the novel and still in awe how accurate it got adapted!

@@goldenmule It's a difficult thing to decide, but I would start with the series and then read the novel. I skipped a few parts that involved other characters in the novel, because the series really did a great job, but the scenes between Wei WuXian and Lan Zhan are a little different, you can fill in the blanks the series left because of the censorship. And the best thing is that you have faces for your imagination.
I agree with you, so many popular characters are being changed to make the quote on quote modern audiences happy. I have seen so many series be rebooted but sadly doesn't follow the source material, but when fans of the original series state their opinion on the reboot the ones behind the reboot series get angry and call the viewers every horrible name in the book. To be honest, if those writers want to make a series that shows characters that are similar to them that's completely fine.
I felt that as well. During the season, I've noticed lots of bad writing, and the acting was not like the first two seasons. It felt bland and boring. Nice to see someone else have the same opinion!
