Is Slipknot just "scary boy music"? The answer surprised me. Join me- a professional opera singer as I listen to Slipknot for the first time performing "Snuff".

I'm Cristina, opera singer, speech pathologist singing teacher. I have spent over a decade in the music industry as a performer, and I’ve done some pretty cool things as an opera singer, film vocalist, lyricist and jazz singer.
Here you'll find videos that deep-dive into artists that you adore. We'll unpack what makes a great and not so great vocal performance, and we'll also get into some voice tips and education about the science of the voice.

Give the acoustic version of this song a watch, you can feel the pain and hurt
Agree, think the acoustic performance in London from 2016 is on Corey Taylor's TH-cam channel
Came to say this.. live version is painful
i second this.
Indeed
I think the acoustic version is the best version. You can feel the pain in his voice. I’ve tried to buy it but haven’t found it
The song is about an unrequited love, it is full of regret because he believes he drove her away by confessing his love to her. The video is about his obsession with her and inability to let her go after they split. If he becomes her, he never has to let her go. The story goes that Paul heard Corey working on the song by himself and he was really self-conscious about it but Paul convinced him to keep working on it. Then one day when Corey was particularly down Paul (bass), Jim (lead guitar) and Joey(drums) surprised him with some preliminary instrumentals to go along with it and it became a collaborative effort that the band had not experienced before. I will save the rest of the story for when you react to the Live acoustic version that the comments will no doubt beg you to react to. By the way... there are NINE members in Slipknot at this time and Snuff is their most popular of the slower, emotional songs but you are right. It is not their typical sound. This video was directed by Shawn (lead percussion) featuring cameos from Malcolm McDowell and Ashley Laurence.
Thanks for the insight!
I thought this song was because his friend killed his self
@@ksensapp7702 the friend you are talking about was Paul Gray (Pig mask, Bassist) and he didn't commit suicide he OD'd. Snuff was the last song that both he and Joey Jordison (Kabuki mask, drums, died of a genetic disease) worked on. They were both alive when it got released, but since their death (especially Paul's) this song has been rededicated to their memory. When it was released it was about a friend who he confessed his love to but she did not love him back and it not only destroyed what hopes he had for a relationship but it ended their friendship too.
Well...people not usualy starts on Slipknot with Snuff, but that's a forever classic...and I'm emotional now, what a surprise xD
This is really a Corey Taylor song that his band helped him with. In order to understand this song and all it is, you need to watch the live acoustic version. Look for “Corey Taylor - Snuff (Acoustic) “
Paul I believe wrote the chord progression
@@spinxz_314 my point was that it is Corey’s pain to tell. Sorry I was not 100% detailed
@@verdonix1976 oh no I wasn't being one of those guys. I should have put a question mark on it. I couldn't remember who wrote it.
@verdonix1976 um, actually🤓 you are right in that it was Corey's song since it was about his ex wife. However, the meaning of the song changed after Paul passed. The original pain of the song (the studio recording and video) is different than the live version.
And the "Making Of". Je'sus, I remember when this came out and the pain he brought to this track was too much and he broke while filming
The love acoustic version will make your heart melt😢🤘💕
live version hits you so hard yeah
2:49 The moment she realizes that boys also listens to emotional songs :D
:*******)))))
não segurou as lágrimas por um minuto kkkkk
I’m just going through a lot right now so I’ll Let you s2x
Yep just has to be done right, with more solemn than anythinf
Every man has had that moment (sometimes years) where he sits with his head in his hands and songs like this BLARING in their ears as they try to choke down the tears. The scary songs are for when we're mad and just wanna fume or get hyped for a workout.
"Duality" - it will be what you are expecting and it's awesome.
Duality is good but I will raise you spit it out or surfacing
Or Psychosocial
One of the best Slipknot songs... one of the least "Slipknot" song. go for Before I Forget, or Wait and Bleed, or Duality for SLIPKNOT
Before I Forget is one of my favorites. Mainly for the tempo change and great vocals toward the end.
Agree, I always recommend Before I forget or Duality as perfect into-to-slipknot songs
Spit it out live at download
@@tommystatic nah. It's an entertaining vid and the crowd reaction is awesome, but for a non metalhead and for music/vocal analysis it's a bad choice
Disasterpiece lol
Man, just thinking of the live acoustic version gets me choked up. Especially once it was re-contextualised by Corey after Paul's passing.
This is like the calmest Slipknot song
And the heaviest
@@karenlandon5332 maybe emotionally, but this is definitely one of the “lighter” slipknot songs everything else-wise
vermillion pt.1 is fun.
Vermillion pt2
@@karenlandon5332heaviest? 😂 No
This song always hits me hard.
It is definitely different than most slipknot I have heard, as it does tend to be more what you refer to as "scary boy music"
There definitely is scary boy imagery in Slipknots usual presentation and most of their music is much harder but, for the most part, their music deals with real issues (mental health, social injustices, feelings of isolation, protesting against mediocrity etc…). They’re a really genuinely great band. If you want a gradual bridge into their heavier stuff Yen, Vermilion parts 1 & 2 and Dead Memories are all tracks that ease ya into the heavy lol.
In my opinion Snuff one of the best Slipknot songs. Please react to another great Slipknot song - Vermilion PT. 2
I never know for a fact which one I love the most, if snuff or vermillion pt2
Vermillion Pt2 is definitely scary boy music, it just sounds pretty 😂 Fantastic song though 💯
I’m sure you’re going to hear it from lots of people, but you should check out his acoustic live version. Gets me every time. So much emotion😢 Would love to hear you do Shinedown. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed with Brent Smith’s vocals. One of the most under rated vocalist in rock today, IMO.
Corey Taylor has an amazing voice. Snuff is a great tune and holds a lot of emotion. Now that you've heard their tamest song, go check out Custer, and Psychosocial. Then you'll get to experience the "angry boy music" you were expecting.
I know Psychosocial is really commercial compared to most of their other heavy songs. But it’s still one of my faves.
try Eeyore or People=Shi* instead
@@jimroot_04 i know them both :)
Lmao. She isn't even close to being ready for Custer. 😂😂😂
Ex Iraq syrian veteran here and I can asure you slipknot is hardcore and kept me going in my deployment! I don't think I'm human anymore after I lost my fiance but this song somehow makes me have tears and feel human again
I didn't know this had a video, and I would've NEVER guessed fucking Malcolm McDowell would be in it lol. He's a fucking legend. A Clockwork Orange is a masterpiece
The fact he cameod 🤯
As others have already said, please watch the live acoustic version of Corey Taylor. Also "fun fact" about this video. Corey wasn't supposed to break the glass and actually cut his hand doing it.
The band refer to this song as “Corey’s masterpiece”.
Like nothing else they’ve recorded, not even on the album it was on.
But obviously powerful enough that they had to include it.
This song makes me cry every freaking time I hear it, even when I hear it reacted to. This song mirrors an experience in my life so personal and devestating I doubt I will ever be the same.
Even though this song ends with the hope of moving on it still brings me right back to that relationship i thought would last my entire life.
Brilliant as always! Music is magic which just keeps giving. Keep on keeping on!
This song is beautiful
Ignorance is Bliss, Love that you have found what we have known all along, Corey is an amazing voice, Multi Talented
I just found you through the algorithm! Holy moly, I enjoyed this so much. Snuff is my favorite song. It got me through hard times and I have the first few lines tattooed on my wrist. I really love the fact that you teach us so much about the musical composition of the song and point out every individual thing. I'm not musically inclined at all but my baby brother is and he's talked to me about isolating a certain instrument, etc in a song and I have such a hard time doing it but I easily followed along with you! Thank you for the lesson!! Definitely subbing. :D
Cristina, your next step of Slipknot is to watch their masterclass of crowd control. Please react to "Spit it Out", Live at Download 2009! The performance is mindblowing.
The way the hype the crowd for that song is magical. I’ve experienced it twice now and magical both times.
Wow you’re a person that listens to all aspects of the song! I have listened to this song a hundred times, I love it. It good to see someone else really listen.
Great break down of one of my favorite Slipknot songs. I liked watching you experience it for the first time.
That organ sound is a Leslie rotary speaker effect. The musicians in Slipknot are world class musicians
Every time I hear this song I get so into it that I start crying.
He broke that glass not on purpose and actually did cut himself btw also these guys are from my hometown and I love em dearly.
He did do it on purpose and it was him dressed up as the chick and painted over tattoos and he even shaved his legs the rest of band gave him shit jokingly
My first time stopping by. Its uphill from here, the emotion hits me on this one. You owe it to yourself to watch the acustic version to break down the message. Much love, looking forward to the next one!
So glad you picked this one as your intro to Slipknot
They are scary boy music you just picked their safe song.
This one has a lot of meaning to the group 😢
They have a few safe songs in their repertoire. Part of the reason I transitioned into this band and into metal in general.
Ok, yes, but circle as well.
You should check out Psychosocial next
Is this a "safe" song? This is one of their heaviest songs, if you ask me.
I loved your reaction. Acoustic version is amazing. I hope to see more good music like this and rock/metal bands.
welcome back!
This right here is an excellent analysis
Thank you, I just stumbled across your page, subscribed! You are great at explaining music theory!
Her smile says it all.
One of their calmer tracks in kind with "If Rain Is What You Want" and "Dead Memories". I recommend "Me Inside" or "Gently".
Corey is amazing, love this song
One of the greatest songs ever! I never get tired of listening to this song!
great reaction in her eyes, faces and hands
One of my favorite songs
Great analysis as always! I like the way you point out interesting vocal moments in a music track without instrumentals 🤩
Similarly, I was introduced to Slipknot through their lyrical songs such as "Snuff" or "Vermilion Pt. 2."
My suggestion is to continue exploring their not scary boy but a bit heavier music like "Vermilion Pt. 1" or "Killpop" 😉
first time I heard this song immediately in my favorite playlist, this song is one of the Slipknot best and rare ballard cover
She stole my heart
to me it is actually insane that the first music you've listened from slipknot is "Snuff"
nice aim!
what and incredible song and very very different from the rest of the discography
Probably my fav by them.. Corey's voice is so smooth here..
You can listen to Psychosocial from the same album, Or from the previous Vermilion pt2😊
Hell yeah...
Your soooooo spot on your ear in music PLEASE 🙏 keep doing it 👍 😊
One of my favorite Slipknot songs.
Corey is such a fantastic front man!
I was driving bus for an A-list rockstar when this song came out. He looked at me and said “Damn! Slipknot wants to sell some records!”. Crazy deviation from the Slipknot norm, for sure! It starts out very melancholy, builds to anger, then rage, and ends with pure desperation. I can still listen to this song back to back to….
Her face when the drum appears my god can relate with that
React to more slipknot please! They are great imo
Corey singing this on his own acoustic is even better
Yasss, more slipknot pleasee
Im going to see them in August....i cant fken wait
It´s not about the voice it´s about the feeling
You really need to watch the live acoustic version - its even better and you can FEEL everything so much more.
Bands make 1 emotional song, sexy song, and a song with godly breakdowns
First time seeing your channel.Gotta say breath of fresh air.You actually know how to sing perit.Listen please react to anything from karnivool or twelve foot ninja. Pretty sure they're from your neck of the woods. Ty 😊
I'm in love with u with this one 😅😅
Snuff is one of their most emotional ones. There are others to check out if you liked this.
Danger Keep Away
Vermillion pt 2 (reg & bloodstone)
Circle
Prelude 3.0
wow she's absoluty beautiful
Great review. Because of it I subscribed to your channel. Next you have to review the Slipnot official video to 'Unsainted'.
Absolutely they're softest heart filled with oain kinda song. One of my favorites.
This is the first slipknot song that I heard; a friend of mine recommended it to me when I was 12, and had exactly the same reaction “is this slipknot?”. I was waiting a whole different music from the creepy guy too hahaha
Long life to Slipknot lml
Knox & Aria- flames Of Chaos 🔥
you have to see him live.... Corey Taylor is awesome in any way... its awesome to see him performing
Seconding (or Hundredth-ing, I suppose) checking out the live acoustic of this. Corey is an insane performer. I love the full band behind him, but the acoustic is really something special.
My take on it was he was telling himself if you love me, let me go as in let him die. That's why you see him as her at the end
All I know is now I need a cover by Cristina
she's BAAAAAAAACK 🎉🎉
🍾🍾🍾
Your preconceived notions of what you remember Slipknot as from when you were younger "scary boy band" are not really wrong, but Slipknot has evolved their sound a lot throughout the years as they've grown up.
It was really cool to watch someone as skillful as you are at breaking down all the different elements to the song. Thank you!
They have made a lot of really cool sounding music, now that you have gotten your feet wet I would recommend Wait and Bleed, which I think is just an amazing song. As many others have pointed out Corey Taylor is an amazing performer and especially the acoustic version of this song is very powerful.
Watching people experience Snuff for the first time helps me be
Snuff is the absolute exception Song from Slipknot. But almost every Slipknot fan love the song because it's just a genius track with so deep lyrics and emotions.
Judy Garlands "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is a great song if you want to feel some emotions. There is one version that was filmed right after she attempted self-deletion (only told people later) and I don't know how describe the depth of emotion she puts in to the performance. I get goosebumps just thinking about it.
Or Corey singing SpongeBob.
You really need to see the acoustic solo version of this.
From having you as our English teacher, to watching your content to practice listening.
that's what I call a plot twist.
ps this is such an awesome content
This comment made my day 🥰 I loved teaching you guys, was so much fun!
This comment made my day 🥰 I loved teaching you guys, was so much fun!
You started with their version of a ballad and it really shows the expressiveness and versatility of Corey Taylor's voice. Enjoy the Slipknot rabbit hole. More surprises ahead. 😊
Snuff is the Slipknot version of a Ballad. They definitely have heavier songs. But Snuff has my heart just as much as the "scary boy music" songs lol
I really liked the way you broke down the vocals, and gave a great reaction, they have other slower songs like Vermilion part one and 2, circle, goodbye, til we die, gehenna, killpop, dead memories, psychosocial of course, duality, wait and bleed, really any of their songs, they have many different styles to them from album to album and even song to song sometimes, its a great band to dive into
Do dead memories next! Congratulations!
As a lot of folks have probably pointed out. Duality or Before I Forget would be a more appropriate introduction to them!
You should cover this!
It looks like no one has taken a stab at unpacking the video without cheating and searching the internet to see if Corey or the band did a behind the scenes or explicitly answered it.
It follows a man tortured by the promise he once made to never forget or let go of someone who has died. We can presume he went through the 'normal' stages of grief at home, and in the opening shots, he's smoking a cigarette to calm his nerves before he escalates his coping attempts to dressing up as his lost lover in an attempt to recreate...something. Perhaps a night from years past.
The video tells a bit of a different story than the song and lyrics in my opinion, as those non-musical elements aren't present on either the album (album version is over 1 minute shorter) or when Corey does it live acoustic.
There are two more angles to approach the video from - one is from a kink angle from the shoe sniffing to self harm to cross dressing. A second would be the concept of a 'snuff' film and how this would fit into that genre... perhaps the video tape he keeps replaying may be so torturing to the main character that an otherwise innocent 'home video' has become as horrifying and painful as a snuff film following his loss. That's all too much to unpack for a YT comment section though.
Hope you do more reactions, I love how much musical knowledge and attention to detail you brought to this song!
Great synopsis. Another possible interpretation is that she is living but has left him; but either way, he can't cope with the loss and has taken to becoming her in order to try to fill the void. A third possible interpretation is that she never existed; she was a figment of his imagination that became so real his mind splintered and he started having multiple personalities, and he keeps reliving the loss over and over as in the "real" personality he keeps finding the clues his alter-ego left, such as the lipstick on the glass or the shoe.
One of the reasons I love the video is that it invites such speculation and discussion. There's no real "clear" answer.
Watch the acoustic version of this, it breaks me every time
Your eyes lady, ❤!
you need to listen to unsainted next!! there’s a lot of opera back up vocals/in the intro that i think you’d love :D
Corey Taylor... from can to can't..... same singer, amazing song.
I just started listening to slip not lately myself can't make sense of it but I'm starting to like ther songs
Listen to the track All hope is gone. That’s a good song. Speaks volumes to what’s going on in the world then and now.
Loving your reaction vids! Great to see you’re a Tool convert! Not hard to see why. My recommendation for a song would be Tremor Christ by Pearl Jam.
Listen to more Slipknot. They are one of the most diverse bands you'll ever encounter. phenomenal band. People hear the name and think crazy hard metal.. not the case. Dig deeper, you won't be disappointed.
Most of it is "hard metal" tho. Or hard nu-metal. Whatever 😄
Are those your REAL eyes?! Girrrrl they beautiful 🤘
Slipknot has a few of these soft songs. All of them are incredible
You should check out their song "Surfacing". Its great to play at parties and small get togethers
Great review!. Hope you find another rock/hard/ heavy band to check😊...tool again maybe?😊😊 ...
The song is about his struggles with addiction and separation of him and his wife. Great song amazing man and band.
