@@Portobello-MushroomHackmons uses some of the most niche barely a blip on the radar Moves/Ability combos to create some insane strats that "can" win off surprise factor but is only as effective as the usual Sniper+Guaranteed Crit Move type builds that are common easy to slot in options... For example the move Stuffed Cheeks, a move exclusive to 3 Pokemon normally, which raises Defense by 2 and manually eats whatever Berry is held by the user (gaining its effect regardless of any requirement like low HP) this can be combined with Body Press for Defense Scaling, Salac Berry for +1 Speed, and for the Ability a choice between Simple for +4 Defense and +2 Speed or Harvest for repeatable boosts (or any other Berry Combo like +1 Priority or Crit Enhance). This also has the benefit of not being able to be abused by a Transform user (an overused sweeper check in Hackmons) as Stuffed Cheeks is unusable without a Berry while Transform Chansey most commonly runs Eviolite. My favorite thing about Smeargle is that it it essentially the blue mage of Pokemon. Blue mages generally learn a wide variety of spells off of enemies as well and their whole gimmick is that they can usually fit any role in the party.
I haven’t watched the video yet, but I once read on bulbapedia that if Falinks was trapped by other means, No Retreat wouldn’t be limited to just one use. If the title is implying what I think it’s implying, *_holy shit_*
The reason for the interaction is that if you are already trapped by another effect, you can use No Retreat multiple times as it only fails if you are trapped by it Mean Look also makes it work.
Odd, unintended interactions like this make me wonder if this also works in the real game. Because as faithful as Showdown tries to be, it does make mistakes sometimes.
I would be surprised if it didn't. Otherwise someone would've filed a bug report to showdown and they could fix it quickly. GameFreak, on the other hand, are not known for fixing things quickly 😬 edit: I think smogon has research threads where they gather data about game mechanics. Maybe there's a demonstration there somewhere of this happening in the game.
Oh yeah, I know Showdown will make changes to fix any discrepancies between simulator and cartridge, so I'm not blaming them for anything! I just think this is such an odd interaction, I can't help but be more curious! It would be interesting to know why those moves interact like that.
If Falinks is trapped by any other means before using No Retreat then No Retreat can be used as many times as you want. This is just a version of that interaction so it should also happen in-game.
I saw this set first maybe a year ago in a pokemon draft league game. I ran it a few months ago in a draft league run of my own. Crazy to think this set has now made it on ladder.

That’s a really funny gimmick 😂 And this a question for anyone with Pokémon knowledge: would a smeargle evo with ~350 bst in a fangame with no online matches be balanced? I feel like smeargle is non- viable for a play through, but if I buffed its stats, made double-battles more common, and gave it slightly better abilities, it could be viable for someone’s team
I'm not sure if it works in game, but more often than not this kinda stuff does transfer, as PS is a pretty good sim. For EVs, you really just need max speed and attack so that you can outspeed and encore as many things as possible
This is so damn annoying in Battle Stadium Singles, because Smeargle enjoys Baton Passing those million boosts instead of having to use them by itself. I like a format that doesn't ban moves, but the fact it's 3v3 means you might have the appropriate counters to every possible Pokémon that Smeargle can BP to, but just kinda have to choose a few to not bring 😢
As someone has told me many months ago though I can't recall who, It does work in game, in fact it's not new to gen 9 where smeargle was put in the game again, falinks could do this in gen 8 as it's not a jaw lock specific interaction just being trapped in general before clicking no retreat lets it be clicked multiple times, but falinks had no way of trapping itself and relied on the opponent to do so which was not happening in a real game, and smogon bans baton pass so baton passing ingrain for example isn't a option either for those metagames, so smeargle in gen 9 is the first time we can see this happen reliably, the conditions to make it possible that is

Kinda crazy how they made such a wild design as early as gen 2, a gen which also features a fish evolving into an octopus
