I decided to try a use it then lose it challenge for fly patterns. Once I caught a fish on a pattern I could no longer use it for the day. I wanted to see how many patterns I could catch a fish on in low clear winter water. What do you think, pattern or presentation?

One of my favorite video of yours. It's good to know my presentation sucks lol
Thanks! I think the big takeaway is that it's a combo of both to maximize your day on the water. There are enough curious fish that one is bound to eat any buggy looking fly. But some patterns on certain days will out fish others.
If only you had picked the right fly...you might have had a banger day.
Great vid Bob!
Gotta do this one again during summer.
I say adjust your drift three times before changing flies although there are times when the fish are keying on a particular pattern. But look at all the different patterns fish are taken on all the time. Look at how many different patterns Lance Egan catches fish on in the Middle Provo and the size of the patterns so the drift is very important.
There is definitely nuance. Like I've said in other comments, good presentation is a necessary component to catching fish, but it isn't solely sufficient to maximize your day either. Thats where the pattern comes in.
The age old question! I suspect it’s a combination of both but what do i know!
Definitely is a combination of both. I think of good presentation as a necessary condition, but fly selection will play a role in maximizing your takes.
Great day Bob! I'm going to say yes and no. It really depends on the fish's feeding habit. I've had days where they will only hit one fly, and I've had days where I can switch and they strike almost every fly I toss. Your flies though killed it. Gonna add some orders.
Yeah for sure. Every day is different.
Enjoyed the video man! What happen when you lost your whole leader set up??
It snapped off completely about a foot into the butt section from the fly line connection. Must have damaged it somehow.
@@TroutFlies is that the same thing we talked about on the last video??
Yeah thats the break that happened. FWIW I went and tested reusing the butt section multiple days again and didn't have any breaks to replicate that one. @@thedesertoutdoorsmen5166
@@TroutFlies good deal I just got my butt material and sighter in today! Gonna give it a go Friday!
What budget waders would you recommend?
What is your budget?
Bob, have you tried the Opros 3rd hand? I love it.
I haven't. I know it might be a better solution than pinning the fly rod with my knees. But I'm also wary of strapping more gear to me as well. I'm in danger of looking too much like I'm about to go fight in a fly fishing battle.
@TroutFlies well I wouldn't use the third hand for walking to, and from the water. But it is helpful with with fly removal, and doing fly changes. Not sure how resilient your DB 2 wt is, but my 3 wt has has issues with light cracking in the resin at the guide feet. So anything to help protect the rod I find helpful. However I understand. We already have tons of gear, and trinkets all over the place as it is. Plus you dealing with camera gear too. We all have a method to our madness. Just was throwing out an option that might be helpful.
I'm in the process of reassessing and overhauling my gear to be more efficient with comps in mind. So I'm open to any and all ideas. @@chasingbrowns
Presentation, You definitely will have better success with what ever pattern you are using if your presentation is more natural.
Agree, that it's far more important!
Presentation beats pattern, until it doesn't
50% of the time, it works every time!
Presentation beats pattern up to a threshold.
