Star Control 2 - Part 1 - Overlooked Oldies (blind let's play)

  • Star Control 2 aka The Ur-Quan Masters is a project that recreated this great old game from the original 3D0 source code into a form that can run on modern PCs. It's apparently exactly the same as the old game, so it's more of a rebuild than a remake.
Anyway, it's much bigger than I expected, an epic space adventure with imaginative aliens, free roaming gameplay, resource gathering, and of course space combat.
In the early stages, I didn't actually get into much space combat, but even so it was still very enjoyable.
For strange legal reasons it apparently has to officially be called The Ur-Quan Masters, but we all know that it's Star Control 2
The game is free so here's the link if you want to download it:
    sc2.sourceforge.net/
This is a request by ModernRelik on my 128 subscriber special.
Star Control 2 on Moby Games:
    www.mobygames.com/game/star-co...
"Overlooked Oldies" is a series of let's play videos of retro games that I somehow never played back in the day. Many of them will be suggestions made by subscribers, particularly on binary milestone request videos.
Intro music is from the classic "cracktro" by SCoopex. The full version can be heard and seen here:

I watched this series when it debuted while making the Ur-Quan Masters HD game. I had to spend years of my free time working nearly every night to make to finish the game. Sometimes it got tough. Listening to Jim play this game reminded me of why I loved it. Now I'm back watching it, doing more artwork. Feels like returning to old friends. If this is your first time, I recommend playing this game (it's free) or the HD game (also free), but if that doesn't appeal to you, I think this series will. This is by far, the best 'let's play' I've seen for this game. Jim goes on an epic journey not to be missed.

This is by far the best Star Control 2 Let's Play I have ever seen. I've streamed the entire playlist several times. Makes good background while I'm working. Anyway I like that it was totally blind, and I appreciated your enthusiasm and running commentary throughout. Also the recap video that discussed the thematic elements of the story was very well-done and brought up themes and symbolism I had never before recognized in this intricate plot.

I'm stopping back to say that this was the first playthrough that I ever watched and it is still my favorite. Jim is the perfect proxy to play this game for the 'first time' all over again. I recommend every episode and make sure to stay for the after party!!!

I love how the plot, quests, and objectives are revealed to the player in SC2. The game successfully drives the player to advance through curiosity and investment in the world. I consider this, along with Dragon Quest I, to be one of the finest examples of plot design in games.

This must be a good series, because I find myself coming back to it over and over.. atleast 6 times so far and I tend to like it more and more each time, while also noticing more and more each time.. by far one the best Let's plays I've ever seen and wish more were like this and honestly wish more people would play older games that deserved more attention. I wish you in general would also get a lot more attention, because you deserve it, Jim.

going through this series again. its yearly tradition around this time of year, you dont know how much this series means to me. currently in education as a game designer with good chances of making it into the industry, this series means so much for my approaches towards designing mystery and plot threads, and investing the player in a world. This is a wonderful journey that I'm extremely thankful for. Thanks so much Jim, hope you run through Ghosts of the Precursors if that ever deigns to exist. Cheers :)

I enjoy the blind let's play format too, which is why I like to do them myself, although they can be difficult to pull off without stumbling, especially with games that are more complex than a simple shooter or platformer. Maybe I should add something to the title that indicates it's a blind let's play.

I love Star Control I&II. I have the first one on my Genesis and all 3 on PC more than once! SC3 is kinda meh but the first 2 were so good. 1 was more about the melee and the fairly simple strategy game and 2 was focused on the narrative of the main game and the expanded melee. There's also Time Warp which adds a bunch of fan ships you can get free and while it took compatibility to 98 to get it to work on my new PC, it's so good for just melee all the time!
Glad to see people this great game!

Just watched this playthrough and going to watch it again, as far as a Lets Play goes for the most part it's done well although I'd like to see less cut out but that's just a personal opinion, mainly I'll be watching again for the story, not many games have a story as deep as this one, it really pulls you in and you actually get emotional at points which is something most games really can't pull off. I just wish there was a continuation of this franchise done as well as Star Control 2 was.

It seems the original writers of the game didn't really comprehend the vastness of space. Afterall in cosmic terms 100 light years is still basically our back yard compared to the scale of the milkyway... (Appart from that, the game was awesome. It's one of the few I ever actually managed to finish back in the day when it originally released, in a big blue cardboard box with great cover art :) )

    • @JimPlaysGames
      @JimPlaysGames  7 ปีที่แล้ว

It is on GOG, but as GeoRyukaiser said this version is superior and free. There's a link in the description bar to it.

Thanks for your playthrough ! For people wanting to give it a try too: What tips for beginners can you give ? Any tips especially for avoiding potential dead ends or other kinds of frustration ? Anything your wished you would have known when starting out (matters of playing convenience ect.) ? Thanks !

Save often. Avoid the Slylandro probes. Keep exploring. It's been ages though so there's probably lots I don't remember.

Are you referring to the HD version? It's still 2D, but just higher resolution. I actually made the trailer for that.

Ok NOW I'm watching it. XD
It took me a bit only because I decided that, since the game is so non-linear, I didn't want you to spoil something before I got to it because I happened to be taking a different path.
But, what with the Kohr-Ah annihilating everything in the universe in my playthrough, I think it's time I took a break from the game. :v Lets see how you do! lol

ME?, yes YOU. XD Shame you've never played it before, you deprived yourself of a lot of fun. I don't even like these type of games but I love Star Control 2. Yeah the light show going on behind him is distracting isn't it?

Curious as to why you're not playing through it with the voice acting enabled. It makes everything significantly cooler.

Yeah I really changed my tune on that :D

    I'm happy to say I did very much enjoy finally finishing it on my second run~ It was a lot easier with all the saved resources not being spent on more landers and men at the start. ;;
I never did find a GOOD strategy for taking on the Kohr-Ah, but bomb-rushing them with the Chmmr Avatars was effective enough. XD I really enjoyed the plot and variety of aliens, hehe.
Sad to say that the ZoqFotPik did not survive my playthrough though. ): Not even sure why, they just sort of... poof.

Does he ever get the voice files downloaded? The voice acting in the game really makes a difference.

Do you mean no sound at all or no voices? If there's no sound at all there a problem on your end. As far as the voices go, I install a voice pack a bit further on in the series, after discovering there is such a thing.

@TheEPROM9 those look cool. More Turricanish goodness. Seems like they would go better with the Pseudo-Retro series, but perhaps that's what you were referring to.

@TheBladeJunker well at least I get to play it now, and if I had played it before, then I would never have the opportunity to share my first impressions of it online :)

"We don't care about the plot!"
Oh, buddy… are you ever playing the wrong game! _Star Control II_ is _all_ plot! ;)
(Well, with some distractions, of course…)

Indeed! I had no idea what I was getting into, and I somewhat regret my intial flippancy. I was only familiar with the original, which was just combat. But this game has so much amazing depth and incredible sci-fi concepts. I was so impressed that at the end of the series I did a 20 minute video talking about how amazing this game is :D

That's on my "to watch" list. Hee hee.
And, as a Finnish band once put it… _Star Control II_ is "the greatest space adventure there [is]." For a small crew of random demoscene musicians and a couple folks from home, Toys for Bob did something truly phenominal…
The community has, somehow, made it even _better_ than that, with things like _HD_ and _Project 6014!_ They're really doing wonders!
It's funny. I only had the MS-DOS demo of the game, back when I was young, which I thought was amazing, in itself. (It was limited to the Sol system.) When I saw the big feature Electronic Gaming Monthly did on the 3DO version, I knew I was missing something gorgeous. Then, come 2002… I finally got to play the whole thing, via _The Ur-Quan Masters._
      … … …
      I lost. :D But, I didn't care. It was super-fun.
