Sony is just half assing most of this backwards compatibility or “classics”. The PS1 classics showed great promise but they’ve been drip feeding games and just not releasing the bigger games. We got lucky to get some games like Legend of Dragoon and such. The PS2 emulator is still shit compared to what Microsoft was able to do for OG Xbox games on the Series X. Again it’s Sony half assing it. I’m not holding my breath for PS3 backwards compatibility to be great either. They’re going to half ass that one and just say “they play like they do on PS3”. So no higher resolution or boosted performance and all the screen tearing. I hope I’m wrong but god they like proving I’m right.

By that logic, what was the point of any platform ever emulating the PSP if we can't play from the original PSP UMDs?
And people use PCSX2 and RCPS3 with modern controllers without a second thought, even for games that did utilise the pressure sensitive buttons.

@@strykah92 No, the logic still stand. Why would I want to emulate (poorly) a limited game library when I can alredy do it MILES BETTER on PC?
Where not only the original pressure sensitive PS2 and PS3 controllers still works, but where there are even third party options (retro fighters sells a modern controller with both sixaxis and pressure sensitive buttons) that supports that feature, that was pretty important in major games like Metal Gear Solid and Gran Turismo.
The only advantage to an official emulator on SONY's hardware would be to be able to directly use your own PS2 library and, maybe, fully emulate it with official hardware support.
Instead we get a very limited and poorly executed experience on a minimal number of games. One of wich is NATIVELY AVAILABLE ON PC.
I don't need to hide it: Ripping an ISO from the internet and play it on PCSX2 is still the best way to enjoy PS2 games today.

You're also consistently getting "backwards compatibility" and "emulation" mixed-up. Which is kinda funny. They are not the same thing. Backwards compatibility is the function of a device playing software from a previous version of said hardware. You can _achieve_ this via _emulation_ or dedicated hardware.
In context to games media: It is almost always correlated to physical media, or previously purchased digital content. The point is that if you've previously purchased it, that specific device/and or software should be compatible with the new hardware.
For example: The Xbox is backwards compatible. While the game still needs to be downloaded, you can put in your original disk into the new hardware and (eventually) play your game. There's extra-steps involved, but at the end of the day this is an example of previously purchased "thing" running on the new "thing". Backwards compatibility through software emulation.
These, by contrast, are pre-packaged emulators and games being sold piecemeal. They are as much being "backwards compatible" than you trying to fit an N64 cart into a Switch. You wouldn't call a Wii "backwards compatible with an NES". It's the reason why none of these are marketed as backwards compatible options.
Thus they are sold as what they are: _New digital versions of said games._ They package the image files with their emulator because it's the _cheapest_ way to go about re-releasing these games. That's it.
Back to the "Sony owns other peoples 3rd party releases", or whatever that was.
If they wanted too, they could get in-touch with Remedy or Double-Fine and talk about an actual re-release. But that costs money. And it also assumes the people that own the original games would want to follow through with that. That's when it starts to get into port territory. So they come to the developer with this option, ask for a fee and then pop this out. Nobody has their hands tied to put the PC version of Psychonauts on a PS5. But it's way easier and cheaper to toss this out the door and be done with it. For certain games that were not released on other platforms this makes sense.
For the games I cited: It does not, and it actually makes less sense to do so because of all the reasons previously listed. It's lazy. And apply the per-mentioned initiative, with I assume is an underfunded budget, and you get moments where you have to ask yourself: Who is planning the releases here? Do they not know that every-other device under the sun has -insert this version- of said game, which is far superior than what they are offering? They are not constrained by having to only release that version, why choose to do this with this game? Who is running this thing? Is their some-sort of metaphorical wheel they are asleep in-front of?

What pisses me off is that 6th gen consoles require cosiderable uprgrade in resolution to stay faithfull when played on modern display - what i mean by that is that their resolution was high enough so that there was no "low res" when playing on crt tv (unlike much more jagged psx). So when i think of Gran Turismo 3 i think of sharp image and stellar 60fps, and not some blurr. Outputing slightly upscaled ps2 games on large modern tv is not doing it justice, becasue if these screens were the majority back then, all of 6th gen consoles would be built to accomodate for it. So upscaling it to even native screen resolution is the way to do it justice becasue that is way closer to how these games felt when played on a screen meant for them.
Also you can buy a handheld for like 250 dollars, that will handle most ps2 games on 2x native res, with smaller screen where even native res will look great. How on earth sony who have all the specs for ps2, can't program actually decent emulator?
My honest opinion is that all these older consoles should have all their specs released, there should be official tools to recompile the code of every game, so that fans can make better emulators, and custom ports that would use much less resourcess. Or at least they could make an emulator that would compete with what we have on pc and handhelds.

Sony used to have good emulation up until the PS3 life cycle.
PS2 had full PS1 chipsets until the slim models after 7000x replaced it with emulation. Said emulation was rocky, but got more compatibility by the time the last PS2 model released and the PS3 was rearing its 600 dollar head.
The PS3 was more capable of emulation so it used PS1 emulation, but put the full PS2 chip on board. They later removed it to cut costs, naturally.
This was pretty justified, but the models of ps3 that emulated ps1 and ps2 had the SOFTWARE removed entirely! This meant that past a firmware update, you couldn’t play the games you owned because Sony removed the software emulator from your console!
Sony made this change around the same time they introduced slim model PS3s and around the same time they started working on PS2 classics in the store.
This meant you couldn’t play your PS2 games but instead had to rebuy *a couple* of them on the digital store to play them with arguably worse emulation.
The PS4 has support for CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Ray, but Sony took away the software to read CDs in order to introduce streaming with Spotify on their consoles.
The PS4 was also planned to release with or have software emulation for ps1 and ps2 native to the console, but of course they took it away when selling classics on the store became profitable.
Whenever you see Sony selling any of this stuff, remember that it’s all based on BS that is being drip fed to us because they’re too scared to do anything that could appease actual PlayStation fans over investors because it has a slight risk of losing profit.

    • @TheOnlyPedroGameplays

@@MichaelM28 I’m talking about rumors, as I’ve now read, but this doesn’t mean Sony is just a-ok nor does it mean anything else I said is wrong. Soon after Sony removed any traces of backwards compatibility from PS3 models starting with the 400 dollar 40gb model onwards, they introduced PSN games that are PlayStation 2.
So that people would get their games instead of buying used from GameStop for example, they didn’t allow for any discs to play ps2 games.
This means that the emulation for ps2 games was now on Sony’s end and not on the players end. Custom firmware gives you the software to run ps2 games like the emulator already does, but it shouldn’t have to be an option.
Truth is, the ps2 compatibility would actually be very beneficial to the console if Sony had just stuck through with making it a console feature that supported discs, too. Instead, they locked away every piece of it.

Even if you meant something else by that statement, it does insinuate that PS1 emulation was removed, which is false.
Also the software PS2 emulation never allowed non-PS2 hardware PS3 models to play PS2 discs at any point. PS2 classics on the PSN were first released late 2010ish but the situation in which PS3 models could or could not play PS2 discs never changed. Respectfully, you might have some Mandela effect going on.
On a side note, I do have a jailbroken PS3, and while yes you can rip PS2 discs to the system and use the software emulation to play them, the vast majority of games have varying degrees of visual and performance issues. It’s debatable whether PS2 games via software emulation ever should’ve been made commercially available.

The console can't produce widescreen so it squeezes top and bottom and let's whatever TV you have force a zoomed perspective instead. That's what I believe happens anyway, because no buttons or circular items look circular at all on a widescreen TV. It's all olive-shaped, including the letters in written text. That's a common problem even today with subtitles created for 4:3 and then applied to a widescreen release which makes the letters go w i d e. You may not think of it, but if you force such a DVD into 4:3, the letters look nice and normal. It's a shame that this purgatory persists with PS2/other emulation in modern days.

It’s such a shame that it is still really difficult to access and play these old titles. There’s a huge market of consumers who were teenagers during PS2, PS3, PSP, etc. who want to play these games again but have to jump through hoops to do so. You’d think Sony would realise this and have better backwards compatibility support. Surely we are at the point where we can have a PS2 and a PS3 shrunk down to a SoC.

It's a huge bummer that the retro community is now coming out with amazing recompilations of older titles and yet none of these companies seem to want to do this for their older game re-releases. It would allow them to give each game major upgrades without messing with the game code and ruining the experience. I know it may be some work for each title, but you'll have a version of each game that'll be in far better shape for future consoles moving forward.
Also, I love Rich's Bespoke shirt.

Even if they could up the resolution 2 to 4 times of the original game, it's still going to look weird and out of place, and all UI and text is still going to be hella ugly if not unreadable.

If Sony did this then all would have access to PS5 code which could be a risk for Sony
So Sony, if respecting the PCSX2 license cannot use PCSX2 code as a basis for their emulator and with the need for signed programs on console the two cannot co-exist.
