Oh man...talk about nostalgia. I remember having this game for the 3DO. One of the few games I actually enjoyed after wasting $600 for that machine. Thanks for taking me back to my teen years by playing this game!

Wow. I've not thought about this game for a long time. I was trying to remember the name for a few days and it finally hit me and immediately watched this video. All those memories. Such an amazing game. Way ahead of its time and, maybe with a few graphical tweaks and control upgrades, it could hold up today easily

This is one of the (G)old amazing games, that I've played way after its time. It really carries that nostalgic sci-fi space theme of the 80's, 90's and before.
You can see that it influences many games like Mass Effect with the Rover resource-gathering minigames and planet scanning, as well as the free ship roam around the star systems. It also reminds me of Dune, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars and other space-themed movies and books at different times.
This is definitely a hidden gem. There is a very well written story and dialogues, as well as, many different and enjoyable game mechanics and high levels of replayabiility that derives from the different choices you can make during each game. You can miss out on a lot of stuff depending on your decisions and timing.
There are very well hidden and awesome secrets which match with my imagination of the crazy, weird, and amazing things that are out there in space that we'll never see (or will we?).
I have watched all of the episodes. It's a pretty great playthrough.
This made me entertain a novel idea.. When you said "Giant spiders" anyone would assume so.. but what if they were just normal sized ones, flying in giant spaceships (for them).
Why not the Empire of Auld? You are saving the universe. They OWE you their loyalty.

This game makes me want to play StarControl Origins sometime in the future. Also, why does the name "United Federation of Worlds" sound familiar? Oh right, Star Trek.

I remember this game, but not that exact gameplay and graphics. I have vague memories of StarControl but I remember I loved it, exploring, collecting matter and space combat. I don't think it was voiced though.

Did you play the 3DO version when it came out? That's how I first played this, way back in early 1994.
I did not; I had the DOS version. I'd heard some of the voices in other TH-cam videos, though.

They were a band in the 70s and 80s, with three names. Jefferson Airplane, then Jefferson Starship, then just Starship.

I think they do explain what happened to the expedition's original ship, but I don't know where: they tried to leave with it, but it was attacked and damaged by a Slylandro Probe and left without a working Hyperdrive. When you left the system, you found it drifting in the Oort Cloud and brought it with you.

This game has some of the best music around, my personal favourites are the Thraddash and the Ur-Quan themes.

I honestly can't recall.
Unzervalt of the Vela system, which means "Our World." I think it can be found in the manual with the historic narrative. Not certain, couldn't ever find my original copy manual.

For menu options, IIRC, but for combat and such, no. It is primarily keyboard based.

@@aulddragon one of the other reasons i like this game is because my dad was a scifi geek and he MIGHT of played this or similar dos game but he passed away when i was 10 years old :( this brings back old happy memories :)

I have the original version of this game downloaded from an abandonware site. There is no voice acting (Most likely because it is an old MS-DOS title and most sound cards at the time weren't able to handle that kind of technology) but it handles great on DOSBox.
The voices were in the 3DO version. Toys for Bob released the source code for that version some time ago, which got turned into the open-source port The Ur-Quan Masters.
+aulddragon Yuubuu should have used the HD fan recreation, because dwe at my house decided that they were better! Warship the creators of this game!
One of my favorite games ever. To my shame, though, I never got through it without using the hint guide map of rainbow worlds and quasi space portals. Really takes the challenge out of it, but even so this is one of the most memorable games I've ever experienced. Glad you're doing it!
Yeah, I enjoy the zany aliens. Reminds me a bit of Spelljammer that way.
