Star Control II - Facing the Talking Pet Unprepared

  • I couldn't find this scene on TH-cam, so I decided to do so.
    This is what happens when you confront the Talking Pet (aka a Dnyarri) without the Taalo's psychic shield. Done in Ur-Quan Masters.
    If want to do this yourself, I recommend saving beforehand as two full in-game weeks will pass and you will lose a huge amount of fuel.

      They have good reason. The Ur Quan are fascinating, some of the best villains ever written. And it's a tragic tale too.
      The Ur Quan are a little... How shall we say... Territorial. Like, if two even catch a glimpse of each other,they immediately try to tear the other to pieces. Through sheer will, they eventually managed to suppress their natural instincts enough to work together and advance their civilization. Notice I said suppress, because that murderous rage is still there. Fun fact- there's never more than one Ur Quan per Dreadnought.

      @zefciu ปีที่แล้ว +12

      The slave shield is not a punishment for some crime. Itʼs a part of their doctrine. Every sentient species must become either slave or thrall. So no. This only means, they wouldnʼt kill humans for disobedience.

    • @Arilou_Wyvern
      @Arilou_Wyvern หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, he was talking about the punishment for running around outside of the slave shields in a Precursor vessel. That's why he wants you to return to Earth and destroy your ship (the punishment will only be abolished if you start obeying the slave laws). The part you're referring to is a continuation of him explaining how the consequences for *"your* misbehavior will cause great suffering for your *entire* people" at 2:57.
      Also, as Zefciu said, the Ur-Quan didn't impose a slave shield on humanity as punishment. Here's a quote where an Ur-Quan explains it was done to protect humans:
      _"Although you consider us the enemy, these conclusions are flawed. We are your salvation. We bring you peace a peace built upon OUR social framework imposed upon your planet a new world order in which your prosperity and security are assured by the Ur-Quan. We will protect you from the hazards of this hostile universe, from dangers so hideous your simple minds cannot imagine their dark scope.... Soon, you will come to understand the boon of slavery we force upon you and then, you will revere and even love us for this gift."_
      They're really just a bunch of overprotective mamas who go around adopting all the lesser aliens they can find. Once you're under their roof, you best follow their rules if you don't want to get the switch.

    • @Spiritofpower24
      @Spiritofpower24 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It can, actually. If the player isn't fast enough to stop the Death March from happening, the Kohr-Ah will eventually target the Umgah and wipe them out. However, the neo-Dnyarri/Talking Pet will survive, and can still be picked up. You won't even require the Taalo shield if this happens. In fact, the majority of sidequests in the game can be skipped if you don't complete them before the relevant species is wiped out in the Death March; The Kohr-Ah will just murder them all, and then you can swoop in and pick up the loot (the absolute required pieces being the Sun Device, to complete The Process and free the Chmmr, the Utwig Bomb, to be modified by the Chmmr and blow up the Sa-Matra, and the Talking Pet, to neutralize the main force defending the Sa-Matra). Only problem is, you're in the middle of the Death March so you've got months, at best, to get everything done and complete the game before the Kohr-Ah blow up Earth and you lose the game. So not exactly the most advisable strategy.

    • @Nesendrea
      @Nesendrea 3 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      TheKnightOfSmite - The slave shield is not a punishment, it’s a status. When the Ur-Quan conquer your species, you are given a choice of whether to become battle thralls or remain imprisoned on your home world. The Ur-Quan don’t care which option you pick, which is why they allow you to make the decision yourself. All they care about is that they can control you, so you can never become a threat to them.
      This Ur-Quan was not promising to lower the slave shield. Basically, the Captain had annoyed the Ur-Quan so much by this point that they were going to completely destroy Earth when they got the chance (after the Doctrinal war). This was an offer to cancel those plans - nothing more.

      @@Malachite7 Such a coincidence that someone answers my comment about Star Control 2 right when I just completed the game!
      I hadn't played this game yet when I commented above. Now, as I just said, I just completed it just yesterday!
      I played the last to date version, The Ur-Quan Masters MegaMod, who extensively enhances the original game!
      Anyway, now that I myself completed the game, I know everything about the Ur-Quan.
      Originally, they were a peaceful species who was part of a cooperation of 7 starfaring species, the Sentient Milieu.
      Since they were solitary hunters, they served as explorers for the Sentient Milieu.
      Until a scout mission discovered on a planet a malevolent species with minds control power, the Dnyarri.
      When the Ur-Quan scout vessel landed on their planet, the Dnyarri immediately took control of the crew's minds and used them to get transported to the Sentient Milieu capital from where they rapidly took control of all species' minds, enslaving everyone into mindless tools, turning the Sentient Milieu into the Dnyarri empire.
      All? No. One species of the Sentient Milieu was naturally immune to mind control, the Taalo, who were Ur-Quan best friends.
      The Dnyarri weren't going to accept that someone keeps their free will so they used the Ur-Quan, who were their favorite pets because they were the most sensitive and vulnerable to mind control, to annihilate the Taalo.
      Then, they decided that 2 of the 6 remaining Sentient Milieu's species were useless so they once again used the Ur-Quan to annihilate them.
      Then they genetically split the Ur-Quan into 2 sub-species, the green who served as the thinkers (the administrators, the scientists, etc) and the black who served as the doers (the laborers, the builders, the soldiers, etc.).
      Over millenniums, the Dnyarri grew lazy and so there were times when they released their control over Ur-Quan.
      It is in one such lax moment that a green scientist Ur-Quan named Kzer-Za noticed that the Dnyarri released their control over injured Ur-Quan and so Kzer-Za understood that the Dnyarri felt what their puppets felt, making them disconnect from a puppet's mind when this puppet experiences pain in order to experience their pain themselves.
      This was a fateful discovery, pain earns freedom.
      Kzer-Za poisoned themselves and used a transmitter to communicate their discovery to every Ur-Quan.
      Then all Ur-Quan started to inflict pain in any way to themselves in order to earn their freedom, they even invented Excruciator, a device which they implant in their brain which trigger excruciating pain, and slaughtered the Dnyarri, it was the brutal end of the Dnyarri empire.
      Then they went to the Dnyarri home planet to decide what to do of the remaining Dnyarri.
      They decided that death was too kind of a punishment for the Dnyarri and so they genetically suppressed the Dnyarri's sentience and used them as talking pets.
      Then the green Ur-Quan who now name themselves the Kzer-Za in memory of the scientist who gave to all Ur-Quan the key to freedom and the black Ur-Quan debated about how to make sure that never ever again they would be enslaved.
      The Kzer-Za concluded to themselves enslave all sentient species while the black Ur-Quan, leaded by a charismatic military officer named Kohr-Ah, would rather simply annihilate every other sentient species.
      The Kzer-Za and the black Ur-Quan who now named themselves the Kohr-Ah didn't agree and so they fought each other.
      The slavers Kzer-Za and the genocidal Kohr-Ah are the product of the trauma inflicted to the Ur-Quan by the Dnyarri.
      The Dnyarri are genuinely evil.
      And the Orz too.
      And the Druuge.
      And the Mycon.
      And the Ilwrath.
      And the Thraddash are bullies, I manipulated the Ilwrath to make both the Ilwrath and the Thraddash annihilate each other, good riddance.
