Friends, allow me a bit of additional thought to say that this is a hard one, for sure. I recognize how people would feel that it was too much, but I don't think in the moment it was. Officer 1 went hands on because the guy was going for a gun and because he came on scene with a report that a guy was acting all sketchy, and he needed to get that guy safed up. That was good. That caused Officer 2 to pursue. Officer 2 starts to shoot just as Officer 1 disarms suspect, but Officer 1 can't tell if it's Officer 2 or suspect who is shooting in the confusion, so he uses the gun in his hand to shoot 3 times. Officer 2 shoots until his magazine is empty in the same vein, then reloads. In the confusion, each officer's actions seem objectively reasonable. It's terrible that this man lost his life, but he lost it because of his actions, not because of wrong on the part of the officers.
C'mon John... I beg to differ with you on this one. The guy was unarmed for Christ sake when the officers started shooting at him. And do you really have to shoot until you run out of ammo? Only God can judge but this was pure cold blooded murder to me> Thanks

PWM FUND The man was a combative threat while he was running away with the gun, and during the clench for the gun. I believe the officer responded correctly to the threat on ground. Even though the bad guys gun was taken by the officer, they were both still in a combative situation. To assume the bad guy doesnt have another gun or weapon is foolish in low light. Its a sad thing to see, but I think it would have been careless for the officer to not put shots on target considering the low light, and that the situation was already combative.

Active Self Protection You are 100% correct. None of this would have happened if he had just cooperated. His actions caused his death.
People may think the cop unloading an entire clip is too much but the point was that he stopped the suspect entirely and ensured his own safety as well as his fellow officer completely.

Look, I'm not saying you should ALWAYS obey authority, but I know and am teaching my sons that when interacting with the police, keep your mouth shut as tight as possible and simply follow their instructions _very_ closely and obviously.
I cannot imagine the mental state and worldview of a person who doesn't act like every command from a police officer needs to be followed swiftly for the safety of everyone involved. Rare is the time you ought not to.

People under "Article 14" can still conceal carry to work in places like court houses, or state offices, yet teachers who are also public servants can not. The right to your freedoms and ability to protection should not end at the work place. I understand if there needs to be limitations, so angry parents dont show up with a conceal, but the teacher who has to burden the daily risks should not be forced to surrender their constitutional rights just to hold a state/federal job.

Just to clarify for those who don't read the news stories after watching the videos.
The suspect had the cops called on him and was asked to leave the store because the clerk felt like there was an imminent armed robbery about to occur. The suspects vehicle was left running outside, and he attracted enough attention from the clerk to make him call the police.
The suspect had his gun in hand, and was tackled by the officer, who wrestled the gun out of his hand. When the officer thought he heard gunshots at him by the suspect with a second gun which were actually his partners gunshots at the suspect, he responded by returning fire.

zulizin It takes at least 5 minutes for cops to come most of the time, and in 5 minutes...Nothing happened. So, the clerk was obviously wrong in his assumption. Cops can't continue to escalate to deadly force based on thinks, thoughts and possibilities.
He was trespassing on private property he had been asked to leave numerous times, on different days, and was asked not to come back, but continued to. Depending on the area the response time of police is often longer than 5 minutes. We don't know what the response time on this incident was, but they were there onsite because the man refused to leave, and did not comply with the police after being asked to come over and talk with them. He likely would've gotten off with a warning not to come back, or after the non-compliance would've likely gotten a misdemeanor trespassing charge had they not searched him. If they had searched him and he didn't resist by pulling his firearm and they found it, he would've gone back to jail for the same thing he had already served jail time for in Utah, and had recently gotten off of probation for which was possession of firearm(s) by a felon. But he pulled a gun rather than risk going back to jail, and died for it.

The fact of the matter is that he pulled a gun on law enforcement, which resulted in a deadly struggle. This criminal could of had a second gun or a knife. In the moment if someone pulls a gun out on you, you’re fighting for your life, and that’s what we call *reasonable cause* for lethal force. You’re not gonna sit there and contemplate whether they’re unarmed after they just tried killing you. It’s easy for us to sit here and judge since we already know the outcome. But in the moment, the cops don’t know what else the guy has in his waistline. All they know is they’re fighting against someone who just tried killing them. In the end, you’d probably do the same thing. Let’s stop defending criminals and start defending cops who are risking their lives on the front line for your protection.

This happened in my area and there was a lot of people upset about it. Personally, I think it was justified. Armed convict, acting suspicious, car running, not listening to commands, tries to run and draw. That's too many strikes.

You see reloads more often in officer encounters than CCW because civilians most times are chastised for dumping an entire magazine into somebody. A civilian would probably face charges.

The suspect made the decision to end his life on that night, the entire situation would have been avoided if he hadn't gone for his gun. In a case where either the suspect dies or and officer dies, the suspect dying is always preferable.

Good example of why we should carry at least one extra mag. I have heard of officers in intense training scenarios being asked afterward how many shots they think they fired, they will say 2 or 3 and be very surprised to find that they emptied their magazine.
This happens to self defenders as well, and that can be used against you later. Dont answer that question right away.

Great example of waiting for the right window to open fire, and shooting until you're certain the threat is neutralized. brilliant work by both of these officers, though I would have liked to see them react a bit more to him having his hands hovering around his waistband and pockets while standing infront of the door.

There was a time when an officer put I think like 2 clips into a guy and he was still fighting by the time the guy went down the cop was on his last bullet. He did a video on that case and said that's why you should always carry the highest capacity mags possible.

I understand cop #2 shooting him if he hadn't seen if his partner had disarmed the suspect, but why did cop #1 shoot the guy with his own gun? He had disarmed him.

Because they could always be carrying a second firearm. In the officers report he said as soon as he got the gun from him, he heard gunfire so he assumed the guy had a sidearm, which you should always assume when dealing with an armed suspect.
So officer #1 couldn't tell if the perp in front of him was firing those shots or if it was officer #2 9 feet away on his left?
Just because the guy has been disarmed of one gun does not mean he doesn't have any other weapons on him. The criminal also shows CLEAR intent to harm the police and anyone around him. The disarm was to remove the immediate threat because it was able to be dealt with close quarters, and the shooting was to incapacitate the person as a threat entirely.
Also Cop #2 probably fired because he may have been unaware of the disarm, and Cop #1 probably fired because Cop #2 fired, assuming there was a further threat after disarmament. Anyone who sympathizes with the goon has clearly never been in a situation like this. You do not give benefit of the doubt to someone who has shown an intent to kill.
Id like to say I support the argument that he was disarmed & shouldn't have been shot by officer 1 with the suspects own gun, but I'll also admit that it's dark & who knows if he had a second weapon...
He did what he had to do! He made it a 100% chance that him and his partner are going home to their family safely

Easy ways to not get killed by cops:
1. Don't be a criminal
2. If you are a criminal then stop being one
3. If you're not allowed to carry a firearm then don't carry one
4. If you are illegally carrying a firearm and are confronted by the cops then just put your hands up high and let them know that you have a firearm
This will mean you will be serving some time in jail or prison
I guess if you'd prefer to die instead of going to prison then you can do what this guy did

All I can say is WOW, total professionals! I watched this video multiple times and never saw a gun! I can not imagine what these police officers have to do every day and the attention to detail they must have to stay safe and go home to their families. Well done. me, too I maybe saw the gun in his left pocket but not in either hand. But I'm guessing in the struggle on the ground it came out , if the cop actually shot the guy with his own gun (the perp's gun) then did the guy still have another gun, ? I guess he could have been carrying a second one or maybe could try to get one of the cop's guns . I'm not sure if at that point he was un armed why he was shot other than just the circumstances of a quick takedown, and some perceived threat. The video is too murky for theses old eyes to really see if he's unarmed or not.
