    As a Boilermaker I've seen some bad fit ups. You try everything to get it the best you can. Five or six years ago me and my welding partner had a heavy walled 8" supply line. We done everything we was aloud to do, to get a good fit. We had the weld tech, Gf and the plant man over the Boiler come a look at it. After awhile they said weld it. The weld was in the 6g position, the bevels matched up good but we had tight 3/32 gap on bottom and a 3/8 gap on top. It was a interesting fun weld to tig the root pass in it. Out in the field sometimes you just get bad fit ups. Very nicely done root passing the fit up in this video.

      if you get to work on oil and gas pipe lines that set up is not acceptable, so do not accept the set up, the bore of the pipe is stepped and would show on XRAY of the weld, that is why we have ASME pipe standard s world wide, good weld ok but not for ASME standard

    • @henryburleigh615

      @Justice
      the bore of the pipe and tube turn (fitting) is badly stepped This will cause lack of penetration etc and would fail xray inspection ,may be ok for some non pressure work but not for Petro/Chemical work

I learned alot but never joined the pipefitters union, too much travel and we were having our second child. I have been looking for a multi process welder to work with at home, they are getting pricey. Good video, thanks.

      He's on jackstands, in a nice clean shop, welding 5" or 6" carbon steel pipe. And his fit up, while not right, ain't nothing that a real welder would cry about as much as they did in the beginning in a damn video about a bad fit up.
      This not only is the easiest material. But it's the easiest size. In the easiest position. The easiest wall thickness. In the easiest place to weld. All done with top notch equipment, in a controlled setting.

      I was a pipe welder in an offshore module pipe shop doing cunifer, stainless, carbon and other materials mainly working for bp, shell and agip, even though the pipe fitting was qc it wasn’t all that good most of the time, a lot of the work was 100% bomb, the inspectors used to be ok if there was a miss match apart from agip inspectors who were very strict even when they could see the issues, I saw the light after 8 years and joined the U.K. fire service and just retired after 28 years service, I still watch pipe welding videos on TH-cam though who knows I might try and get back into it😎😎😎😎

    Excellent demonstration and explanation. I had never considered how helpful it would be for penetration to feather down the edges of a tack-weld - it makes perfect sense and I'll add it to my list of processes to try. One question, what's the thickness of the wall on the pipes being welded please?

    • @tolittletime
      @tolittletime 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They said it’s schedule 40 but actual wall thickness depends on pipe size. If this is 8 inch pipe the wall will be 8.18mm thick. 10 inch pipe would be 9.4mm thick. This can also vary slightly by manufacturer. I hope this helps.

    • @brucebear1
      @brucebear1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tolittletime Very helpful, thank you. It's hard to guestimate the size of the diameter by looking at a video made with a hand-held camera. It appears from your info that these two sizes of pipe have wall thickness somewhere in the 5/16"+ to 3/8" range.

      Eh learn how you’ll wed in field I run loose 1/8” gap with 1/8” wire about 95-100 amps and on hot pad crank up to about 135 ride bevels and feed wire in middle so it doesn’t suck back and after hot pass turn up to about 165-170 until cap. Lots of folks run a whole lot hotter on all steps but I prefer my method for me, heat is your friends with welding just remember the hotter it is the faster you must go for the most part

      For the welder, the only issue is that it doesn't pass inspection. For the line, when you have abrupt transitions in interior diameter it can create both turbulence in the line, and premature wear, as the product will constantly "catch" on the sharp edges and wear it away faster.

    I'm wondering what it looks like on the inside. What kind of material flows would flow through the pipe and what kind of inclusions or protuberances if any are on the inside of the pipe. Longevity of the pipe depends on how the weld turned out inside.

    So what was actually done differently for this weld? I know F/A so to me it just looked like a standard welding process but the pipes are misaligned, how/why does that affect how you weld it? How did you deviate from a "normal" weld here?

    I build tanks some times that last joint in a heating coil ain't quite right but no one knows after adjusting a cut angle or two with a zip disc sucks seeing tie ins all high low like that on piping jobs glad I don't see it at my job

    hoping next video its done using stick welding, same situation bad fit & all, just curious if its doable using stick, 😁

    Why do you use 90 amp for the root and 175 for fillers?

    When I welded we made anhydrous tankers, and all fit up had to be flush since they were under pressure and and human weld was ground out to after covered with a machines hot weld all except my hot welds for the final seam. The proper fit up would be required not for the looks but the safety. We took pride in our trailers and loved the job wish the compensation would of been there.

    Reasons you never put the flange on until after you have the pipe all welded out. Just an FYI for young fitter/welders out there. Good job dealing with a shit situation though.

    Is there a reason to Tig this istead of stick welding it? New welder here, just wanna know the thinking behind it

    I can still remember in 1966 that the welding rods being used by our military that are made out of 20% chromium, 20% nickel, 3% tungsten, 8% molybdenum, 5% tantalum, 5% niobium, 3% ferro-mischmetal rare earths alloy mixture, 1% carbon, .25% boron, 3% zirconium, 2% cobalt, and 29.75% iron. We use them to weld military grade alloys for various vehicles and equipments. And that also includes nuclear reactor components not exposed to radiation after the 2sd heat exchanger engineering section using inert beryllium fluoride salts.

    This is why I like to make all my cuts and weld on the elbows first, then set everything in the hangers and mate it all up in the air with clamps to avoid problems like this. in the last 10 years lasers help a lot to avoid problems like this.
