I have three tips extra that made huge difference for me. #1: If you have possibility to choose direct/wave from audio settings then go ahead and try both. My was in direct (using xSquawkbox) and when I changed it to wave it wen't so much better. But I've heard people getting it worse that way so try it! #2: Plan well. I mean that keep your charts ready. You can hear active runways from ATIS before clearance. Write down these and also SIDs for those runways. I write them down so when controller tells me SID I don't need to hear it clearly but just enough to connect it to one of I've written down. It is also faster to just underline or circle the SID from paper than try to write it down without even knowing what it really is, especially with new airports. #3: And adding to tip #2 you have to really try to memorize what controller will probably say and what are the "keywords" to listen. I still do have all calls on paper and I read them before I ask for clearance. This is great especially for beginner because whole ATC might be quite new thing. Oh and great tips overall. I have been watching some of your videos and I like them. You have a new subscriber my friend! :)
if everyone on VATSIM would follow AviationPro's suggestions and recommendations, then we'll be able to hear and communicate effectively. so glad you raised this important topic that every VATSIM member needs to watch and follow AviationPro's recommendations. Great job AviationPro and I believe all VATSIM pilots should watch his P1 rating training videos and get your rating to experience the real world procedures, as that's what VATSIM is all about, to best simulate real world in a simulated environment.
How about rule number 1 is for people to speak CLEARLY, and not trying to sound so "pro" by speaking fast and kind of "rolling over" their words? Separate your words people!
Hello Aviation Pro. I got on Vatsim the other day for the first time, after joining Intercity VA, and was struggling to understand the controller. Later I found that that vPilot had a check box to make it have realistic radio sounding audio, which purposefully degrades the sound. I unchecked this and could hear the controllers much better. I see that you mentioned that and it makes a big difference. Thank you for your videos.
signman Bob I'm so glad i read this. I jumped on vatsim today with the intention of doing vfr circuits and as soon as I heard the controller, I panicked and left. Just tried this and audio was so much clearer, thanks mate.
I followed the suggestion that was in this video about splitting the sound between ATC and the sim sounds. I did not have a USB headset, just a regular audio headset, so I purchased a USB adapter on Amazon, that has a headset output. Then I set the sound in Vpilot to use this output for the headset. The sim sounds come out of my speakers, and the V pilot sound out of the headset, and it makes a world of difference in the clarity of the ATC sound now.
Sir I Have one problem with splitting the sound between ATC and the sim sounds. so Sir, can you give me the link of Amazon product from where you bought Usb Adapter . and Note:- i have headset with AUX point Green and Red and Only One Sound Card in CPU. Thanks
Thanks! Well it's not very hard, it's also shown in the video. You simply use your desktop speakers (if you have them) as default audio device, and then in vPilot you select your headset as output device instead of your desktop speakers.
hello Captain , i have one problem, when i am try to "Split the flightsim audio and ATC audio " but when i plug-in my headset all sound came out from Headset. NO sound came out from my speaker. So how to fix my issue. Note I have only one Sound Card in my CPU. Thanks and Please make some Video about that step by step please.
You should be able to select a different output device in vPilot than your speakers. You might need to install something like the Realtek HD Audio Driver for that to work.
I use VPilot with FSX and I have this very annoying issue when the ATC instructions get cut off, and the RX button turns off too. I know it's not their fault because everyone else can hear them and I have had the issue for weeks. It's something wrong with my network or VPilot, i am sure my audio devices (Beats Studio3) are ok. If anyone has a solution to this that would be great. I have been having trouble even copying taxi clearance.
today i started with VOICE by flying from LHBP to EDDM. The Controller in Budapest was really really hard to understand and there was also the problem that it was the first time with REAL transmissons so i almost gave it up 🤣
Maybe it’s better not to fly to Budapest, if you watch my VATSIM video there you will hear that the ATC audio quality is not good somehow. Try to fly to Germany or Scandinavia, those controllers usually have good audio quality ;)
Helpful Video as always! Could you tell me your OBS settings if you wouldn't mind? I've bought a fairly "beefy" pc just to record and fly at the same time. FPS isn't an issue but the quality of the video is. I'm trying to find out if it's my PC or just the wrong settings! Thank you!
It’s not possible to split the audio and make the FSX audio come out of speakers when headsets are plugged in. Your overall audio will come out of the headset. There is no setting page for changing audio outputs in FSX. To be able to do it you need 2 sound cards.
It is possible. Set your speakers as default device in the Windows playback devices settings so that all application sounds, including those of flight sim, will run through your speakers. Then set your headset as output device in your pilot client, e.g. vPilot. It works for me.
Ik heb nogsteeds problemen met atc dat ik ze gewoon niet goed hoor. Ook zijn er vaak mensen die door elkaar heen lullen wat ook erg vervelend is waardoor ik ze niet hoor.
can you help. how do you talk on vatsim with yhe PTT key while the vatsim wondow is not open. when im in fsx i have to open the vatsim window to talk to atc. Its hard because i cant talk and do something in fsx at the same time.
Since I last wrote to you I switched to FS2004, instead of even FSX, because of XP11's high demands on specs which I can't meet right now :) Also switched to mostly using pilotedge. CAn't remember do you hav much an opinion on PE if you said even before, not sure? Thanks.
Never tried PilotEdge, but I don't feel like paying for something that I can also experience for free on VATSIM whenever and where-ever I want. Might try the free month sometime though, but I don't fly in the US a lot anyways, so I'd have to get a bit used to that first :).
Yeah I mean I'd rather not pay the $38 a month if it were free, but it's mostly the guaranteed 7 day a week 15 hour a day or so (if I remember right 11 am to 2 am Eastern US time [GMT -5]) coverage, and the quality of it too.. mostly just that they're there. It can get annoying though to a degree to get blasted for flying 1,000 feet over the max on a SID. Not that that's OK, but by the time you're hearing about it , or me anyway, I usually know I've probably botched it a bit. It's a learning environment as they say. Not here to promote it in any commercial way but I still use VATSIM. Just a matter of controllers being online :) Good day
well it doesnt i have tried every thing inluding a comlpete rebuild of my computer i can use teampeak fine but too many idiots on it i really want to us vatsim
You speak about other networks and using teamspeak, i.e IVAO and it being too good. But I'm not sure I agree that it's too good. Because of the regional accents, languages, and sometimes flying in to a new airport can lead to me still not hearing everything on IVAO. I find VATSIM at times can be so bad I am just guessing but this is less so with IVAO. My headset isn't a bad one either, it's not loads of money but it's certainly not bad. Disabling VHF simulation did help a bit, but I use both networks and after being on IVAO and then using Vatsim the difference is quite big. That being said, nice video, thanks for the tips
Thanks! Yes, that's another difficulty, that's why it might be more practical in your early years on VATSIM to fly in and out of regions where controllers speak without a strong accent for example. It's something real world pilots have to deal with every day! :)
Don't expect any headset to magically solve the VATSIM audio quality problem, it's just about getting the sound right directly on your ears without having all kinds of distortion from the flightsim sounds around it.
I think many people don't calibrate their microphones and never use the recorder to see how they sound, which with some controllers, is unintelligible.
It's the way they are doing it that isn't quite authentic. When I listen it doesn't sound like a fuzz plugin or something that adds static, but rather it cuts down the sample rate to make it robot slightly. Makes it really hard to understand. I compared it with real ATC just to see. Those guys are still hard to understand, but mainly because they talk so fast. You can hear "flight level" and flight numbers and such.
VATSIM is free, they can't invest money into elaborate VOIP systems. There are ways to use TeamSpeak and using whisper binds and possibly creating some new plugins but that would take a lot of work on VATSIM's part and also for setting up on the pilot's part. A TS needs a server to be hosted on, which is more money.
To be honest, for me flying with text is a much bigger hassle than having to deal with the audio quality. These tips should help to solve some of the problems ;)
Yeah I know, just dreaming... One problem I have is that I am unable to use the speakers for any sounds, I just can use the headset for all sounds. Are you guys aware of any software that is able to mute/lower FSX sounds when something comes over vPilot?
K.S. Flightsim As a controller on VATSIM, text pilots take a huge amount of time, especially when there is a lot of traffic or an event happening. please if you can go with voice, as this will make a controller's job on VATSIM easier and if you are scared or unsure, we will always look after you. however if you still believe txt is what you want, expect a delay due to us typing and coordinating other traffic.
Try everything you want, it's still gonna sound like ass until they make the new codec. I have nice gadgets and I still avoid flying on the network. I do have a PPL IRL and people who say "it sounds like real life ATC" have to be either on drugs or internet wannabes.
Your video didn't help a bit. It's the crappy vPilot BS software! With FSInn I didn't have any voice problems as in RL flying. In X-plane the voice is good but in FSX it's crap. Bye bye vatsim!

Thanks for creating this for us. Short, to the point. I added to my channel playlist.

If you already have good headphones but no mic, get a ModMic. I have one and it works great!
Hope I helped someone! :D

Hello great video. Can You show us from A to Z how to split ATC from FSX sound.
Thanks! Well it's not very hard, it's also shown in the video. You simply use your desktop speakers (if you have them) as default audio device, and then in vPilot you select your headset as output device instead of your desktop speakers.

You need to change the default audio device to your speakers in Windows playback settings and point the output of your pilot client to your headset.
does it requried two sound card on my cpu ?
can you make a video about that ? or And good yputube link please help because i can't sound window playback setting please help captain
my defult output device is speaker. but tell me, how to set vpilot output to my headset ? make some video or give me great youtube link please
you just gave me the answers to all my questions. loads of thumbs up!!!!
Thank you so much. Do more vatsim videos. I love them
You're welcome, will do! :)
Hello aviation pro.. how do i split vpilot sound and fsx sound? I have a headset and a speaker that both using audio jack. Any idea?

Hello, How to reduce the noise of the engine in vatsim?
Just reduce the sound settings in your simulator.
Thank u Captain
I believe you can split the audio in FSX without using an ATC client?
Probably, but it's very easy to it via the pilot client :)
Even now with the new audio codec these are still true. I still find pilots and controllers trying to talk fast and tripping up over their words.
Helpful Video as always! Could you tell me your OBS settings if you wouldn't mind? I've bought a fairly "beefy" pc just to record and fly at the same time. FPS isn't an issue but the quality of the video is. I'm trying to find out if it's my PC or just the wrong settings! Thank you!

I even noticed it when controlling, which is normally way above player quality :/
Compared to real life (eg. northern Europe) the quality of IVAO network is quite similar.
You speak about other networks and using teamspeak, i.e IVAO and it being too good. But I'm not sure I agree that it's too good.
