  • Terry Molloy is one of the longest-serving soap opera actors in the world from his time as Mike Tucker on The Archers.
But in the 1980s he wore another hat, or in this case mask, when he was the third actor in classic BBC sci-fi show Doctor Who to give both life and voice to Davros, the creator and leader of the Daleks, a role he has continued in the Big Finish audio dramas.
In the time that Whovians would regard as 8.5, post-McGann and pre-Eccleston, the North Shields actor spoke to Front Room's Jason Bradbury about being a voice actor and one of the unrecognisable figureheads of the Doctor's arch-nemeses, following on from Michael Wisher and David Gooderson.
Clip taken from Front Room, originally broadcast on BBC Knowledge, Friday 28 January 2000.
The BBC has thrown the TARDIS doors wide open to celebrate 60 years of Doctor Who, and there's a huge amount of archive inside. Interviews, photos and documents sit alongside hundreds of programmes from the Whoniverse on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds. Begin your journey at www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho

Jeezo, the 'Yoof TV' style camerawork in that clip is enough to induce sea-sickness, lol.

What an amazing find from the archives! He played the first Davros I ever knew in Doctor Who and I've nothing but fond memories of Terry Molloy, but I never would have imagined there had been an entertaining and informative interview of him shown on the BBC at any point. Thanks for unearthing, this was a joyous watch.

I met Terry Malloy last night at Harrogate Theatre in The Hound of The Baskervilles. I didn't know he was Davros
    My mind was totally blown.

Jason Bradbury doing a passable Davros impression even without the mask.

It's also interesting to note that Terry worked with a real Mike Tucker in Doctor Who. (Mike has done a lot of stuff in the Whoniverse, not least writing, special effects and a whole lot more. He's a much nicer chap than the fictional one in The Archers, however, I'm sure!). Just saying!

Julian Bleach was / is great as the coolly supercilious and frailer Michael Witcher-inspired ‘old man’ version of Davros but for me it’s Terry Molloy as the bloated, ranting and bombastic ‘maniac child’ Davros who remains the definitive and unsurpassed Dalek creator. I think RTD really missed a trick in not roping Molloy back into the fray, particularly since modern prosthetics could really do that tumefied and jaundiced Davros creative justice today 😔

It always struck me that there was an uncanny resemblance between Davros and Ahmed Yassin who both ran similar organisations at the time

I don’t remember seeing this interview on any of BBC Doctor Who DVD’s or Blue Rays as an extra, but I am not surprised since It’s so bad I would bet that this program didn’t pass quality control for broadcasting.

Julien Bleach is too stereotypically manic and can’t stop moving. Micheal Wisher commands by being very still with barely a movement. Tapping a finger

Easier??? Don't forget he has to also give a good acting performance from under all that - Dr Who needed a strong antagonist for the show to work.
