    The fact that Jody takes such a personal interest in recommending mouthpieces and comes across so straightforward and honest, not to mention generous is sharing his knowledge, makes jodyjazz top of the list for me. Quality pieces can seem expensive but not as expensive as buying the wrong tool for the job.

      @@ClaudioGeo Yes, it's such a common misconception among students that every year they play they need to go up in reed strength. On the other hand there are so many students playing Classical mouthpieces with way too soft reeds.

    My saxophone teacher when I asked about the saxophone secrets, sound and ease of playing, he said the secret is in the mouthpiece. he was right but never explained it like I learn from this JJ video. I just bought myself a Jody Jazz *SuperJET for my new Mark VI tenor sax from China. I'm glad that I also learned about mouthpiece read combinations. Thanks.

    1. Arnold Brilhart Level Air 6 tip bari mouthpiece
    2. YBS-52 baritone saxophone
    3. Classic funk - I think lol, I like versatility and bright and cutting, but also soft and graceful when needed.
    4. About 5-7 hours, just depends on my other responsibilities. I’d practice 10+ if I could.
    5. Play quietly and graceful when needed, and play altissimo easier.
    6. Legere signature strength 3 (so many benefits)
    7. I played alto for 5 years and then took a 2 year break because I couldn’t play in tune and I didn’t know it, but I was sooooo limited by my $3 mouthpiece that came with my cheap saxophone!!! I became an adult, got a job and purchased my DREAM saxophone. The baritone, it came with the Brilhart mouthpiece, but I also bought a Yamaha 5c to try it out. I sounded so good, I’m like that darn mouthpiece was holding me back and caused be to QUIT. I also don’t want to brag, but throughout school I was always in 1st chair and people looked to me for an example, including my teachers. I cannot even play on that alto mouthpiece anymore, it doesn’t let me pass enough air.
    I bought a used jodyjazz dv baritone 7 tip mouthpiece and I love it already.

    First of all Jody, thank you very much for all of the info that you share with all of us! It is much appreciated. I'v'e only been playing the sax for about 3 months but I am definitley hooked. I love it. It's a Jean Paul tenor sax. It's more of a student-intermediate. I practice about 10 hours a week approximatley. The mouthpiece that I currently use is the mouthpiece that it came with...TS-4 mouthpice. I know that some mouthpiece arn't a cure all but a good one can certainly help. I want to play more altissimo and rock which I believe would be more of a brighter sound correct? I use a rico royal 2.5 strength cane right now. I thought you said that you might not recommend the super jet mouthpiexce on a student-intermediate sax but that super jet sure is nice. If I do give that one a try what size tip opening do you think I should use? Thank you very much!

    • @jodyespina9452
      @jodyespina9452 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Kevin, Thanks for your note. The SuperJet is fine on a student Sax, my comment was that it might not be the easiest transition for a beginner but since you are practicing 10 hours a day, I recommend that you try the Jet and the SuperJet and I think that the 6 would be the best tip on these but I think you possibly could also manage a 7. It's all about being flexible with the reed strength. I also think it's important in your case as a beginner to try the Jet as well, since it might be an easier transition. All the best, Jody

    I'll be down for tmea this coming February and I'm in the market for a metal mouthpiece. My current tenor mouthpiece is the hr * 8 as for Reed's I play on Boston sax 2.5. I've tried 3's as well but have preferred the brighter sound and flexibility from the 2.5's since I seem to feel more comfortable on those. so with that said. What facing would you recommend? I'm looking for something more on the brighter side. And wanted your recommendations on facing as well as reed strength depending on what mouthpiece I go with. I'm just hoping to find something not too resistant and something I can control really well.

      Hi, I don't work for Jody Jazz but based on what you are currently playing and the music you play I think they would likely recommend a Jody Jazz HR* 5 or 6. Those mouthpieces are great in a variety of styles, like jazz and gospel. I'd email Jody directly though! Hope this helps.

    I really love the sound of the Jodyjazz Jet for alto, but would it be pointless getting one as a beginner?
    I’m using the stock Jean Paul AS-4 optima at the moment and Rico 2.5. & select jazz 2m.

    • @jodyespina8277
      @jodyespina8277 ปีที่แล้ว

      that's a hard question - I would probably recommend the HR* 5M as the one that would be easier to transition to and help your playing and sound right away. For beginners, the Jet can come off as too harsh. A more experienced play can get a good sound out of the Jet.

    I followed the link to the 6 questions but the page was blank? I am looking for a baritone mouthpiece , ( I play a Yahama model YBS32) currently play 2 hrs a week on the standard yamaha 5c, ( ok to play ) a Rousseau 4R ( not really much of an improvement on the yahama mpc) and a Rico Graftonite B5 ( great sound when I get it right but hard work to play right, quite a few squeaks) Reeds I use Vandoren traditional 2.5, a new legere classis 2.5 synthetic. I play in a concert band and am the only bari sax player, surrounded by a lot of trombone, tuba, euphoniums so looking for a MPC with definetely more volume and I wish more bark/growl

    I use a alto 110/2 M berg Larsen with a 2 1/2 tenor plasticover Reed but have trouble with altissimo notes is there something wrong with my set up?

    • @gangofgreenhorns2672
      @gangofgreenhorns2672 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use an 85/1 SMS Berg on alto with a 2.5 Legere Signature tenor reed, and I think it's great with altissimo (I also use a 110/1 on tenor, and a 105/2 on bari). I would say the tip opening seems pretty huge, but I know that's a common thing with many Bergs/Berg players. I'd maybe try going down in tip opening, or just jump down to a 2 reed first and see how that works. I'm using a lip out embouchure and so an 85 (7 for alto on Otto Link scale) seems totally fine for me, but if you go down in tip opening I'd try out maybe a 95 or something first. Still a big tip opening for alto, but that type of baffle/chamber will always play loud no matter the opening imo.

    • @jodyespina9452
      @jodyespina9452 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Freddy, I'm familiar with that setup for Latin players - super open Berg the # 2 chamber is the dark chamber so they use the Plasticover Tenor reed to get more volume and brightness out of it. I've been with Latin players who had that setup and I've handed them the SuperJet Alto 8 with a Daddario Select Jazz 2H - and they freak out every time at how good it is, easy to play easy altissimo and so much volume with half the effort that they are used to.

    Hi Jody I ask about the custom dark sop, but I like metal, bec they are smaller in the chops, so I am thinking of the DV, Just wondering if you ever try the Dv with a rollover baffle? Wouldn't it move it to the darer side of your chart?

    • @jodyespina9452
      @jodyespina9452 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rollover baffle adds a small amount of brightness

    • @jodyespina8277
      @jodyespina8277 ปีที่แล้ว

      no - a rollover baffle can put a little more brightness on. I really think that a hard rubber soprano mouthpiece shouldn't be too big in the mouth and that if you want dark you should try the Custom Dark, altough the DV is not too bright in the soprano.
