I know they keep teasing him about the portion sizes, but this just shows me that I can potentially feed myself for an entire week on $29, and actually eat something delicious. I LOVE all the episodes and everything the guys come up with, but I think this is one of the first videos where grocery shopping and enjoying food again feels within my reach (and calorie range!).
Spot on, this. I work as a chef and love to cook (a bit biased), but for people who don’t you could spend around 3-4 hours a week (planning, shopping, cooking) and have dinner for the whole week. This video shows exactly the kind of skills the average person needs to eat proper healthy homemade food without too much work. This is so important to know for basically everyone. It may even be fun. Well done Sorted.
His recipes also scale up very well. You can tell Jamie cooks for a family (especially kids) because his recipes are not only big on portion sizes, but also familiar punchy flavors.
It's even easier if you buy some things in larger quantities. Get eggs by the 5 dozen. Get chicken thighs (cheaper and tastier) in bulk and trim and individually freeze them. Get a whole boneless pork loin and chop it into pork chops, cutlets, roasts, and country style ribs.
I think what’s impressive Is the fact Jamie made enough food for a family of four (plus) for the same amount of money that fed 2 with Mike and Baz. In my opinion he stretched the dollar (or pound in his case) FAR FURTHER.
I agree, I know it wasn’t the brief but it most certainly opened my eyes to some cheaper dishes I can make for myself and my family and really stretch the money as far as possible.

And it is exactly what Jamie did - a baguette sliced in half, usually spread with mushroom paste (although there are endless versions - including with tomato sauce, to imitate pizza), pieces of ham and cheese, all put in the oven, until cheese melts. Hence the name. So Jamie unknowingly hit the jackpot and created a dish that is very popular in Poland, and which he had never heard of

Yeah I think Ben's estimate that Jamie's 6 plates could have been 9 is underselling it quite a bit. I think most of his meals could have easily been 4 adults or even 6-8 with kids. Sure Barry's bread bowl was stunning and something you'd want to pull off for guests, but when it comes to actually feeding a family, Jamie's meals were significantly better.
Can agree to this. Barry definitely wins but from my understanding, the badges are supposed be about their growth and/or ability as a chef. Jamie did do almost as well as Barry even the portion sizes would be perfectly fine depending on the person.
I think the fun thing about watching Jamie do this is his hands-on (literally...) approach compared to the other two. In reality, if this is a real batch of recipes for mid-week, it doesn't have to look pretty and chefy, it just has to look yummy.

I suppose making things easy by simply eating raw veggies and having less washing up is sub-optimal for midweek cooking which all of this is based upon from your standard

Agreed. Jamie’s could be one of the eat half/freeze half packs, Barry’s is definitely a level up one. Mike’s would need to be reworked of course, but good ideas.
I love this format! As much as I love the direct competitions when they're all cooking together I feel like it can get really hectic and they can get sidetracked pretty easily. Whereas while they are still obviously ribbing each other they spend a lot more time actually focused on the recipes in this series.
Ebbers' scoring seems odd to me. Like, no waste, perfect planning, 15/20. Is this like one of those law school tests that aren't technically designed around people getting a full score?
To me, a 20 would've been something like a chef-level skill, which isn't surprising that the normals can't achieve. He may say that there was nothing wrong with the dish, but that may be a generalization and if he was really picky he could list a few minute details that prevented them from getting the perfect score. And to be fair, as long as the scoring is constant between all three, I don't think it matters _much_ . The _most_ important thing is how they compared between each other, not how they compare to a perfect score.
The trend I've noticed is that they clearly nudge results within reason when they can to have the score card be tight for the badge counter. Some of the videos it would be very obvious if they fixed it (spice guessing), something like this is massively objective and so they can nudge numbers as they see fit.
You can laugh at the massive amount of food Jamie makes all you want but you can't deny that the man makes some tasty looking and sounding food. Also just listening to the food descriptions kinda makes me go "This is exactly the sort of thing someone with young kids would make for them. Exciting taste but also decently healthy." Idk. I think a lot of flak Jamie gets for his "masses of food that are flavor bombs" makes a lot of sense when you think of his work in the context of a dad wanting his kids and himself to enjoy the same food. To me at least, that explains a lot.
Jamie is really impressing this year. I think I would trust him in my kitchen with some planning and NO time limit, but great job. Too bad Ultimate Grocery Shop Jamie can't replace Pass it On Jamie.
Watching Jamie struggle with cling film made me think of plastic-waste wrap alternatives that you guys could test? I've seen some yt-cooks use plasticy one (that they at least claimed to be reusable) and there are products made of cloth soaked in beeswax etc.
There are a ton of silicone lid type things out there that are great replacements for cling film! Some stretch to fit the bowl (so you can shake it) and others are just toppers (great in the microwave or just for basic covering). If love to see them use less cling film overall
I feel like the fact that they weren't scored on amount of food is a shame. Barry and Mike made 2 * 3 portions where as Jamie had easily 3-4 portions of each meal. Definitely deserves a meal planning badge for that since he made his ingredients stretch twice as far.
i feel like it isnt though this format is supposed to show how you can plan meals for a week without any food waste and if you are buying food for 2 people and cooking for 4 without thinking about eating leftovers then that's 2 portions every day that is just getting thrown out and unfortunately there are a lot of people who refuse to eat leftovers so i think especially cause jaime was trying to cook for only 2 he shouldn't get extra points for cookingfor 4
Thought Baz had it, but Jamie came out swinging. I would love to see the rubric. Some of those score feel low and I want to know what boxes aren't being checked. Great series.
This is out of the perspective of a Professionally trained Chef. So yeah getting a 20 is extremely hard. 78% and 71% are quite high Marks given the Standard Ben and the Foodteam are able to set :P
I know it's a long time back now but I don't seem to remember Mike's work being quite all that bad. His scores for 2 out of 3 dishes seemed exceptionally low compared to the others, when I don't recall the dishes being quite that spectacularly worse. Jamie with potatoes and bread for one meal surprised me with the relatively high score.
@@fionaclaphamhoward5876 He recapped it in the episode though. Ben is always big on lifting people up and not sticking the boot in, but he made enough side comments that showed he really didn't like Mike's first and third dishes
Why does watching/ listening to Jamie always make me feel so cheerful, even when things are going wrong? lol I felt sympathetic for Mike and proud of Baz but this episode is just making me feel happy no matter what's happening.
Jamie's my winner without question. His food looked the most inviting, *and* there was so much of it! Big portions! Leftovers! No ingredients wasted! Absolute standout.
I'd probably chow down one of those plates in one sitting easily ngl, however ye if portion size was an issue and you'd want to reduce it slightly? Just set some aside for your lunch tomorrow before you plate up the rest.
Hey Ben, given it is summer and we can go out side again maybe the next challenge could be pick-nick lunch. Each has to fill a pick-nick basked with budget. Of course, cold foods easy carry, no spill, maybe a chaffing dish warmer at most.
I've been watching Sorted since Let's Talk Chocolate, and I really feel like I've watched such an evolution of the channel in general and the boys in particular. It's been a really wonderful journey and I'm glad to be a part of it. Some things haven't changed though. Ben's still a geek. Jaime loves big portions. Mike is obsessed with chicken. And Barry likes rose gold.
Still the winner to me, dishes looked amazing and definitely up my alley, plus the amount he made as said could've fit on 9 plates, and with such a budget that is amazing.
WHO takes longer than 20 minutes to make mashed potatoes? FABULOUS series....and economical..ALL three did a great job. Mike may have had some mishaps, but he was quick thinking in how he solved those situations that we all have experienced. Jamie, generous portions..and perfect for dinner and perhaps one lunch the next day. Baz...wow. Some really unique ideas. Thank you all for always educating and entertaining me....
I mean... It depends on your hob mate, mine's fairly old and takes time to heat up the pot of water on it especially if I'm cooking Enough taters to feed my family (6 people) add the mashing and mixing part and ye it'll probably take me over 20min
Would love to see another Pass It On, where the 4 boys are given the ingredients with instructions to make 3 separate meals no waste. I loved in the end comparing their PIO efforts to the actual Sidekick plan. Lol
my stovetop is broken at the moment and I have to come up with recipes that are oven-based, that first Chicken recipe is perfect!! thank you for the idea ✨🤩
This was a great series, I would love to see something similar with 3 chefs. Get Ben and two guest chefs to fight it out. James and Poppy would be great but any of the guest chefs would work.
Am I the only one who would have preferred to see all 3 at once or at least on consecutive days? I really like the battles, but the competition--for me--got left out because there was such a long wait in-between.
…. The next „mini“series battle should be something like going to a different country specialty store, all three have a small amount of minutes to run through the store and to plan what to get, and any product that was bought double with one of the other three will be thrown out of …. All with the same budget and cupboard stuff… maybe 🤔
Barry just had one of those days where everything goes so perfect you never want it to end, because you know it will be made up for in the future. Mike just had that, crap I am first and everything happens to the first person that the others take note of. And Jamie should get a badge for feeding a whole family with each meal :)
It's comes with a Bias as Jamie's are the 3 I would enjoy eating but for me that should have been the winner. It's home cooking so shouldn't have been losing points for plating. Absolutely love this channel and the new recipes and skills it's taught me
I love that Mike just looks sincere, I imagine he tried to cook on a date once and it went a wreck but his sincerity just saved the whole date. Haha Mikes always my favorite, Barry is the epitome of pretentious, and Jamie reminds me of my family, we cook a lot of food because we want to feed everyone all the time as much as they want.
overall gonna have to say Jamie by a mile. Exactly the kind of midweek meals I'd want. I think I'd also give it to him for the planning badge. Given the amount of food he produced hard to say for sure about no-waste. For me, I tend to eat leftovers for lunch as well so probably he landed that one as well for me, but hard to say so for everyone.
solid! 15/20. Its like the google reviews of some restaurants "that was the best dish i had in that city 4/5". Would be nice to know what they had to do to get 20/20
This was a great series! It wouldve been nice to hear what the boys could have done to improve their scores (eg 17/20 for Barrys best dish, what would have made it a 20/20?). The scoring seemed a little too random to me (as a teacher!).
The day my notification came in at 4pm lol. I like these, maybe do another series in 6 months and see if they do any better, think Mike has to redeem himself!!
Watching Jamie struggles with the cling film reminds me of something: Japanese/Korean saran wraps are superb, AND have amazing built-in cutter that makes it really easy. Next gadget review? 👀
...That has nothing to do with Japan, though? Those are ubiquitous in north america, too - it's just that these guys have the cheapest possible cling film and have removed it from the box.
Barry was so effortless about his (most likely) win but just being Jaime and all his mayhem should make up for some extra points is all I'm saying. I wanna cook with you!
Aw, JAMIE! That clove of garlic would have been AMAZING grated and tossed into your panzanella. Bonus points for feeding a family of four for the same budget as everyone else. I'm borrowing that spinach mash.
There's a bit of a heartwarming moment here for me. When I was young Dad would always cook too much food and we'd be eating leftovers for a long time. At the time I thought it was because my mom just passed away and he was still residually cooking for three rather than two. Seeing the huge portions Jamie put up made me realize this is just how a parent cooks; always too much to make sure their kids are full. I'm not aware if Mike or Barry have children yet, if they do then maybe my dad just shares Jamie's portions, but if not then this is an interesting habit of a foodie Parent.
My partner still cooks like he is cooking for his family of five, despite divorcing years ago, the kids growing up and leaving home, and now it's just him and me... I think it's very much a "dad" thing, maybe for many a "mum" thing too.
The goofery of the normals is obviously key to the channel. But to see how far all 3 have come when they apply themselves is really something. It rubs off on us too! I made a caramel the other day that only took 3 attempts!
Feels a bit harsh that plating is rated so highly that Jamie only gets roughly a C for his execution, even though he got everything done right and tasty. But then I'm probably biased a bit by those very friendly portion sizes. Getting that much food out of 8 pounds per day, without compromising on taste, is spectacular. It might not earn full points in the competition, but it definitely earns a virtual pat on the back from me. Well done!
Congratulations, Barry! What a comeback after the badge disaster earlier this year, you were really inspiring. I really liked Mike's ideas, could you make a video on how to "fix" those dishes? It just wasn't Mike's day. ♥️
Baz absolutely deserved the win and I would happily make his meals at home. But as for stretching the dollar for my entire family and playing to tastes all around the table, Jamie’s meals are most certainly winning in my household.
Poor Baz gets so much flack but he does a good job. Glad he's gotten the recognition he deserves AND earned 2 more badges. Others have made mistakes but not had badges removed so I still think that the removal was unfair.
Mike wistfully "I need to use the grater more", Ben "You think that's what let you down?" I cried😂😂😂😂 I love this series, so many good affordable ideas, cheers boys!
I genuinely laughed out loud during all episodes in this series! I’ve also never considered sidekick more than I have during this series. All of the dishes looked amazing and I’m definitely going to steal the cheat panzenella(sp?) and garlic bread roll-up 😊
As someone with long nails and sensitive finger pads, it's always hilarious to me to watch someone struggle with cling film. For the next challenge could we do something with multiple food restrictions? Like for people who have multiple allergies, can't use alcohol, that kind of thing.
Generally I feel like portion size in these kinds of videos don't make a whole ton of sense. If I'm home cooking, I'm cooking for me, and I work hard in a workshop all day. When I get home I'm ready to eat my neighbours cat, and I'll often have two or three of what is considered a "portion" of food. If I don't, I'll wake up at 1am and eat every snack I own plus whatever bugs unlucky enough to have made their way in to my kitchen.
@@TheTorbjoern same honestly, spaff is the only one that seems to serve actual portion sizes out of the sorted cast. the rest do what I like to call "restaurant" sizes in which it works if you're having a bunch of other courses too but generally I feel a bit letdown by that anyways because there's one dish I'd rather have more of instead of a bunch of smaller dishes

Ebbers' scoring seems odd to me. Like, no waste, perfect planning, 15/20. Is this like one of those law school tests that aren't technically designed around people getting a full score?
I noticed that too. I’m hoping that it’s a first time thing and that in the future, the only way to go is up and scores will improve in the future.
He's got to get back at them somehow for how they used to treat him in early sorted :P
The trend I've noticed is that they clearly nudge results within reason when they can to have the score card be tight for the badge counter. Some of the videos it would be very obvious if they fixed it (spice guessing), something like this is massively objective and so they can nudge numbers as they see fit.
I think with 15/20 its a staple dish, but not the wow factor like barry’s turkish bowl dish.
You can laugh at the massive amount of food Jamie makes all you want but you can't deny that the man makes some tasty looking and sounding food.
Also just listening to the food descriptions kinda makes me go "This is exactly the sort of thing someone with young kids would make for them. Exciting taste but also decently healthy."
Idk. I think a lot of flak Jamie gets for his "masses of food that are flavor bombs" makes a lot of sense when you think of his work in the context of a dad wanting his kids and himself to enjoy the same food. To me at least, that explains a lot.
Thats great and all, but a dad cooking for a family wasn't the brief. The brief was cooking for two, with a badge for plating up for grabs.
Isn't there some chainmail around?
They already did the beeswax one.
off topic but in this case he could have just used a plate on top of the bowl :/
There are a ton of silicone lid type things out there that are great replacements for cling film! Some stretch to fit the bowl (so you can shake it) and others are just toppers (great in the microwave or just for basic covering). If love to see them use less cling film overall
Maybe even alternative storage options etc for leftover and unused ingredients
"How many Italians can I offend?"
Well this should be good.
in all honesty I think Jamie deserved both badges as well just as much
Jamie's looked to be heavy on portions and flavor! And ... I'M HERE FOR IT!
I feel like the fact that they weren't scored on amount of food is a shame. Barry and Mike made 2 * 3 portions where as Jamie had easily 3-4 portions of each meal. Definitely deserves a meal planning badge for that since he made his ingredients stretch twice as far.
Is it really successful planning if you were meant to cook for 2 and not 4?
@@misterkayy he made six meals instead of three then, so when the other guys have to go back to the store and spend more money he doesnt
i feel like it isnt though this format is supposed to show how you can plan meals for a week without any food waste and if you are buying food for 2 people and cooking for 4 without thinking about eating leftovers then that's 2 portions every day that is just getting thrown out and unfortunately there are a lot of people who refuse to eat leftovers so i think especially cause jaime was trying to cook for only 2 he shouldn't get extra points for cookingfor 4
Spaff portions are the standard Samoan portion. If there's any left for a second portion then I'd wonder if Jamie is secretly Polynesian 🤣
@@Y0G0FU yeah, that make sense.
@@fionaclaphamhoward5876 Unfortunately, Mike's scores weren't where I was questioning. But I hear you.
@@fionaclaphamhoward5876 He recapped it in the episode though. Ben is always big on lifting people up and not sticking the boot in, but he made enough side comments that showed he really didn't like Mike's first and third dishes
Now I'd really love to see a video where Ben explains what Berry and Jamie would have had to improve to get the missing 22% and 29% respectively!
These battles are so informative and entertaining. Would love to see different takes on the same format for sure!
Okay so my _oven_ is broken, but the stove works.
I feel like Jamie did the recent lentil and kale shakshouka recipe because that "for two" was easily six portions. 🤣
Yeah, initially they said in consecutive weeks, it's been so long I had forgot what Mike made
Maybe 1 dish each per episode. Rather than all 3 dishes in the same episode?
I waited until part 3 was up and watched them all in succession.
Jamie's contribution would feed a small army!
Ben - We need two portions of food per meal.
Jamie - Two portions per plate? My kind of meal.
So nice seeing 'normal' ingredients; though I'm vegan I like talent, and these guys have it without excessive ego on display.
It's comes with a Bias as Jamie's are the 3 I would enjoy eating but for me that should have been the winner. It's home cooking so shouldn't have been losing points for plating. Absolutely love this channel and the new recipes and skills it's taught me
My thoughts exactly. When I cook for myself I don't particularly care how it looks, just as long as it tastes good!
Jamie's cooking is my style -- simple ingredients, good flavor, generous (aka economical) portions. I appreciate that he put veg in each dish, too!
This is such a strong concept for a series. I would watch an exact copy of this series again. So good.
Barry really outdid himself and I’m so happy to hear that! He was so scared of losing badges lol
Could be cool to see another version of this series with one 45 minute recipe, a 30 min, and a 15 min
Loved this series, would love to see a part 2 with the same budget - now food prices have risen so much would be interesting to see the difference
The bigger dishes just show how much further Jamie can stretch the budget and leftovers for more days are never a bad thing!
It would be nice to see more episodes in this format. Perhaps all vegeterian meals?
Absolutely loved this mini series!! Was a blast to watch! Great job Barry..
Would love to see this series using supermarket “own brand” items to teach us how to make great meals on strong budgets!
Or a review of own-brand products?
@@HelloCruelWorldItsMe yes! I think it would be very fitting for the current crisis!
ALDI only ingredients.
That shot with the Cornershop Baguette is a GIF for the archives.
We’ll expect to see it later on Twitter Pokhraj 😉
@@SortedFood HAHAHA
overall gonna have to say Jamie by a mile.
Would be nice to know what they had to do to get 20/20
This really feels like Jamie’s Comedy Special because I had a great laugh. The rubbing of the garlic and the clingfilm controversy was just top tier 😂
LOVE J's mini BeeGees shout out: "Stayin' alive, stayin' alive, ah ha ha ha stayin' alive..."💖💖🥰🥰
This was a great series! It wouldve been nice to hear what the boys could have done to improve their scores (eg 17/20 for Barrys best dish, what would have made it a 20/20?). The scoring seemed a little too random to me (as a teacher!).
Loved this series because the normals acted like normals! The meals were ones that I personally would love to try. Would def watch more of these.
The day my notification came in at 4pm lol. I like these, maybe do another series in 6 months and see if they do any better, think Mike has to redeem himself!!
Mike definitely deserves a second chance.
Watching Jamie struggles with the cling film reminds me of something: Japanese/Korean saran wraps are superb, AND have amazing built-in cutter that makes it really easy. Next gadget review? 👀
...That has nothing to do with Japan, though? Those are ubiquitous in north america, too - it's just that these guys have the cheapest possible cling film and have removed it from the box.
they also come on English wrap boxes as standard.
Stretch Tite and Freeze Tite. Both have a zipper to cut the film, a real time saver.
Can you bring back lost and hungry please, I used to love seeing you guys going on holiday and just eating amazing looking food.
Probably on hiatus due to covid
I certainly hope that some of these will turn into sidekicks: I would definitely do Jamie’s dishes. Well done, guys!
Jamie needs a clean film badge for this achievement!
Mike wistfully "I need to use the grater more",
Ben "You think that's what let you down?" I cried😂😂😂😂
I love this series, so many good affordable ideas, cheers boys!
Would love to see Jamie’s meals in Sidekick!!!
Jamie absolutely cooks like a dad. It's very obvious and impressive,
This was so fun! I'd love to see it done with different dietary restrictions, because those tend to increase prices or make things more repetitive
Like for people who have multiple allergies, can't use alcohol, that kind of thing.
this was definitely one of the funniest and best series you guys have come up with, love it
tbh jamie is my kind of guy- good eating with a lot of it.
This seems fair. Barry had arguably his best performance this series
I disagree with Mike: Spaff’s portion of Mashed Potatoes is actually a normal amount for me lol
Out of all of these on this little series, Jamie's recipes are the ones I want to eat
I lost it when I saw the cheese hanging off the side in the sexies 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
This series was great and really surprising. Still very proud of Barry and also of Jamie and even of Mike who, bless him, tried his best
Berry definitely earned that win but I think I would rather have eaten Jamie's dishes.
Well done, Barry! Well done!
I love the banter between all of you. I feel the jabs but I also feel the love.
I vote for Jaime’s dishes. Lots of leftovers for the week and it looks as if they could easily be frozen.
YES
You are not going to freeze panzanella salad.
@@melissalambert7615 Not a put together salad, but the excess ingredients can be separated or used for something else. His menu is the closest to how I cook and trying to make enough for lunches/dinners and something to stash in the freezer.
12:25 I like how you didn't remove the string of mozzarella stuck on the underside of the plate. Authenticity right there.
Yay! Get to see Jamie’s version!
I’ve seen Barry and Mike robbed in favor of Jamie a few times so was relieved to see it go fairly here. Congrats, Baz!
lol true 🤣
Jamie absolutely won in my eyes, if the whole point was getting the most value from the ingredients it's not even a question
My favourite series in a long time. I laughed my head off!!! Jamie did great today: solid portions and who really cares what it looks like? Barry was phenomenal and I’ve never seen a normal pull it out the bag quite like that before. And Mike… was there too.
Jamie: (uses Chorizo)
Me: “AHA!” (Ticks off ‘Uses Chorizo’ on the ‘Jamie Cooks’ Bingo Board)
A Jamie bingo board would be hilarious 😂
Ben's has "Benuendos", Barry's has pretentious items, Mike's is filled with chicken. I want to play!!!
We never got "uses bacon" but we got "roasts potatos" and "offends traditional recipe"..
Such a good promotion of your Sidekick concept. Well done!
I think Jamie's done a excellent job, there would be enough for the kids too! I don't see anything that my kids would say no to 👍
He did really well huh? You can tell he cooks for 2 adults and 2 little ones on the regular.
That explains his portion sizes.
IMO he actually did the best planning in this series. He prepared everything like he expected more people to show up and if they didn’t he was going to have leftovers for lunch.
I love that when Jamie drops the fork of food you can hear Ed cracking up.
