My pick for best claustrophobic thriller is easy: The Descent. That movie scared the crap out of me before the “scary” stuff started happening. I actually started to feel more comfortable once it turned into a horror.
I agree. "The Descent" caught me off guard with how good and effective it was. It didn't get a whole lot of advertising as I recall. But, boy was I happy when I left the theater.

I’ve been watching your videos since around 2011 when I first learned “how to TH-cam” in elementary school, and now I’m about 2 years into university. Hope all is well, please keep up the great work and congratulations on nearly 15 years as a channel!
My favorite claustrophobic thriller is John Carpenter’s The Thing. While they do go to different places. At a certain point these people are isolated to their base with just each other.
A true classic that deserves to do better on the box office. I loved the sequel or remake with much better CGI instead of practical effects. But the bombed too so no more sequels. A true underrated gem.
I read the script for this movie in college for an assignment in screenwriting. I didn’t realize it ever got green lit and was releasing. That’s kinda cool.
My fav claustrophobic movie is probably Gravity. I went with a friend to see it, not really knowing what was gonna happen. I remember multiple times, my breathing had gotten so shallow that my chest hurt. When it ended, my friend told me his breathing had also gotten super shallow I don’t think the movie is fully claustrophobic, but also Train to Busan. The parts where the characters had to sneak past all the zombies on the train had me white knuckling
Gravity was such an amazing experience. It really felt like being there and feeling everything. Also a pretty good reason why not knowing anything al all about what a movie is about gives the best experience. I had no clue there was an accident about to happen, just that it had “Sandra Bullock in space”. Yet we are here watching movie reviews!
When you mention claustrophobic movies, “The Platform” comes to mind right away. I love horror/thriller movies, but I haven’t seen nearly enough of them, so it’s great to look through your comments section and make a list! I thought “The Platform” did an excellent job of really placing you in the building and feeling trapped to that one section.
This isn't a movie, but if this premise sounds intriguing look up Ben Bova's classic short story "Men of Good Will." In it, Russians and Americans are fighting everywhere except on the moon, and as it turns out, the reason for that peace is unexpected and brilliant.
Exactly, we're supposed to believe these smart folks are dumb enough to bring war to their space station. No on0e wins a nuke war, it's done, over, why Continue the fight? I found it too silly.@watamatafoyu
He's very kind to it. It's so sad how poorly this movie turned out. Just no utilization of the fact that they're ON THE ISS. Very little tension since the viewer knows everyone's motivation. The astronauts didn't feel like they were astronauts, etc.
"Buried" is the first movie that came to my mind for claustrophobic movies. That movie surprised me how engaged I was and the ending really surprised me.
My favourite claustrophobic thriller is the first Saw movie. Though a lot of that story is told via flashbacks. So if it has to be strictly in one location, then I'll go with "The End?" An Italian zombie movie set mostly in an elevator.
Underwater has at least a really good opening, in terms of claustrophobia. The rest of the movie has that woman from Twilight and the bartender from Deadpool, and still works for me. Some alcohol may be required.
I don't think it's considered a thriller, but when you say claustrophobic and "Crimson Tide in space" the first thing that pops into my head is The Hunt for Red October. Such a classic.
I am not someone who is claustrophobic, but the Descent is my pick for most claustrophobic film that I've ever seen. I actually left the theater covered in a cold sweat. It's an excellent film.
@@watamatafoyu concept is cool but that movie is unwatchable. It’s literally shaky cam motion sickness inducing. It’s a good movie but you can’t watch it without getting sick

The novel 'Lucifer's Hammer' -- written by Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle in 1977, while the cold war was still very hot & 20 years before the ISS even existed in the real world -- had a sub-plot identical to 'ISS', but shit kicks off after civilization is devastated by a massive comet impact. I don't recall what it was named in the novel, but it was a joint space station with both American astronauts & Soviet cosmonauts on board, with communication breakdowns, secret orders, murder & mayhem, etc.
@@gianni_hello I read it over a decade ago, but it held up then as an expansive, nightmarish vision of a pre-digital age cosmic apocalypse, and I think it still does hold up; an alternate (end of) history, for a time when it truly felt like the nuclear sword of Damocles was hanging over humanity's head, infusing everything with a nihilistic subtext. The scope is (obviously) massive, & the tidal wave passages definitely stand out, but the savagery, greed, & vicious tribalism that immediately sweeps over the surviving population like a contagion is also memorable, feeling brutally realistic.

Thanks for reviewing the smaller movies, even if they're not as thrilling as expected. My first pic for a claustrophobic film would be Cube. But loads of great suggestions in the comment section I see.
There need to be a film where they cast Brad Dourif, and he acts in his unique way, so you are convinced he's the villain, but is a complete good guy. Like, Sir Galahad levels of shining virtue.
I had to sleep in my parents room for 3 days after watching The Descent. Caves, slimy " humans", basically no escape. The movie did its job when I had to bring my sleeping bag next to my Mom and dad's bed.

Star Trek first contact would be my favorite sci-fi thriller. The borg (basically cybernetic zombies) taking over the ship deck by deck. Those scenes where the crew are walking through those borg infested decks is pretty creepy. Of course that being said, my favorite horror movie is ghostbusters 2. That subways scene with all the heads on pikes always scared me
Saw it tonight, and really enjoyed it. The first half is a bit more suspenseful, but I think that’s because it’s establishing the characters and setting the scene for how each person will play their part, and it still surprises you.
I remember seeing the trailer for this a few weeks ago with my grandfather and my brother. My brother said something about how this movie was going to be fantastic. Then both me and my grandfather whisper explained that movies go to January to die.
Why would astronauts even follow orders at that point, you think the US/Russia is going to what send a shuttle up in the middle of an active war to transport one of their crew down for a court martial?
I guess I'll have to see it, because that point would rest on which nation still has the capability to retrieve them. The only way this can be a plot is if both nations still have that capability. Otherwise...the game clearly belongs to the nation that can get its own crew back.
A claustrophobic sci-fi/horror movie you might not know about is "Crawl or Die" from 2014. A squad of marines on another planet are forced underground by alien monsters. They need to get the last human capable of procreation to an escape ship, but to do that, they have to crawl through a seemingly endless tunnel system, all while being pursued by the monsters. Very thrilling!
So the ship in the first Alien film is actually quite small it’s just got massive engines and is towing a bloody huge (I forget what it is, I know it’s industrial but I can’t remember if it’s the mining thing or if it’s a refinery for processing the ore) but the alien or the humans never actually go on to the thing their towing as far as I know. It’s they equivalent of them big 18 wheeler you see but the film only takes place in the cabin at the front of the lorry.
The Nostromo is essentially a tug boat. The refinery they tug is suppose to be unmanned automated factory, so I'm not even sure if it has life support.
I agree the first part is so strong with the distrust! However there is a big plot hole for me that occurs at the turn which you find out at the end regarding the amount of seats available and a characters motivation to leave
The Cave with Lena Headey and Cole Hauser is pretty claustrophobic. It is about a cave diving team that comes across something they didn't expect. I don't want to give away too much.
Favorite claustrophobic movie? Favorite is hard but maybe the most interesting use of confined space: Fall (2022). It's a pretty good movie and its was kind of interesting that the characters were confined so tightly to such a small space yet they were literally in the open, able to see for miles in every direction.
I want to recommend a movie I translated for work (I make subtitles for a living) called "Capsule", where Britain is secretly the first nation to put a man in space and other forces work against them. We spend almost an entire movie in the capsule with the astronaut, it's very claustrophobic and intense.
Sounds about right for January film. Seems to have the same fundamental flaw as Sunshine. Conceptually interesting movie but devolves into a horror slasher film and unfulfilling ending. Oh wait that was Life as well. Best claustrophobic survival thrillers? The original Poseidon Adventure (never saw the remake) Sphere, and Das Boot though I should really see Crimson Tide some time.
Dead Calm (1989): Sam Neill, Nicole Kidman (her breakthrough role), and Billy Zane. Two yachts, one is sinking, and only one survivor from it climbs aboard the other. Great moments of tension on each boat in the middle of the ocean.
Speaking of Alien Resurrection with Brad Dourif, there is a great Alien Resurrection fan edit that just came out called Alien Rebirth, Alien fans need to check this out!
So.... Nobody's gonna mention that this is just about the closest live action among us we're ever gonna get? I say that and I don't even play among us.
I felt that this movie came out way too early than it is appropriate to do so amidst the tension between the West & Russia. I still remember that Russia threatened to detach their side of the ISS irl...
Argh… someday we will learn to live in peace. As a Russian-Ukrainian I can say, on average ordinary people in russia don’t have hate for Americans. But the government does everything to instigate the hate and tension. A lot of older generation fall for this propaganda. It’s a shame we are being ruled by stupid old people and an old insane authocrat.
I really liked how you gave a review of the movie but didn't spoil anything. I was considering seeing this but will now wait until it's available at home...and don't have to worry about already knowing what's gonna happen. Great job!
Know Jeremy won't see this, but I've been a subscriber since your channel had less than 10k people. This was the second channel I subscribed to back in the day after subscribing to some cooking channel I can't even remember anymore. Came for the honesty, stayed for the FF6/Chrono Trigger/LotR fanboy. Hoping you and your friends/family have a great 2024.
I just saw it, it's not bad for a January film, but I don't think it's worth full price of admission, I have a Regal Unlimited subscription so it only cost me 50¢. Convincing visual effects, but I agree with Jeramy, the first half is much stronger than the second. _For All Man Kind_ does this type of story better.
Panic Room, Prince of Darkness, Oblong Box, Buried Alive (pick one), ..Buried 2006 and The Cube and A Man Called Horse and Pitch Black and Night of the Living Dead and Clue and most prison movies..
Sunshine. I’ve seen it about 10 times. Creeps me out and fascinates me every time. Been chasing that dragon ever since. I didn’t realize how hard it is to make a movie about people in a spaceship and it be good.
Alien still counts as that kind of thriller because, despite the relative size of the ship, the crew is in space & trapped inside the vessel with something trying to kill them & the sequence with Tom Skerritt in the ventilation system was definitely claustrophobic
My favorite claustrophobic film is "Day of the Dead" because it got everything you want on that genre esp. the villain character Capt. Rhodes, he makes The Governor and Negan from TWD looks like a saint.
The best actor bait I’ve experienced was in Knives Out. Every time I was given a chance to trust Ransom’s motives, I took it. Because it was Chris Evans. That had to be intentional and was genius.
Buried is a film with ONE actor on screen, who happens to be Ryan "Deadpool" Reynolds... and it's pretty good. Also, this movie's trailer was being bashed by a lot of people who thought that ISS astronauts would never turn on each other since they're, you know, scientists and not soldiers.
I've only seen the theatrical previews shown at the theater and the premise was interesting. I thought about seeing the movie tomorrow, but told myself to see what Jeremy Jahns thought of it. After watching your review, I'm like, maybe I'll watch reruns of F-Troop or Hogan's Heroes on TV instead. Update: It's 2 days after my initial post. I saw the movie on 1-26-24 and here are my independent thoughts. [1] The movie was Ok, but not great. [2] Not much action, but there was suspense. [3] Could've been more thrilling if the astronauts will to survive was embellished. [4] The actors/actresses are a bunch of unknowns to me, but they performed well.
Favourite small cast space movie. Life. Old school "it came from out of space" kill em off one by one type of movie with great performance from great actors!
It may not be my _favorite_ claustrophobic movie, but based on the review I heard, this movie sounds like it wants to be “ The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street” from the original _Twilight Zone,_ and that’s a good thing to try to be…but maybe it takes a Rod Serling to pull it off!
I actually like Cloverfield Lane better than Alien. I'm a huge Aliens fan and still think the second one holds up. Just found the first one a bit boring coming from the second. The actings better/more iconic in the second too.
I kinda hated this movie. I've put longer comments elsewhere, but the short version is that whomever wrote this has no idea how the ISS operates. The lack of even basic understanding pulled me right out. One problem is there only being ONE Soyuz for a crew of 6 when there should be at least two. Also no mention of Crew Dragon, despite that being operational for 3 years now? Apparently filming started in Feb 2021, and in the nearly 3 years between noone thought to fix that? Probably even more basic is that the film expects us to believe a crew member wouldn't already know the protocols and station modules/nodes and have to have this explained after boarding.
Phonebooth, The Diving bell and the butterfly, A Prophet (Un Prophete), Mother!, the original film from which Guilty (Jake Gylenhaal) was adapted from. Den Skyldige i think? Ex Machina, The Shining, Moon, Hotel Mumbai, United 93, Repulsion, ALien
ISS always meant International Space Station to me, until I became a high school teacher 20 years ago. Now it only means "In School Suspension". (I always imagined the joke of an administrator telling a student they had ISS, and the student exclaiming, "MY LIFELONG DREAM TO CLIMB ABOARD THE INTERNATION SPACE STATION HAS FINALLY COME TRUE!" Unfortunately, but predictably, this has never happened in 20 years.)

John Goodman in that and John Goofman in Oh Brother Where Art Though - epic
That guy (the Greyjoy) is great. I just watched him in a Danish mini-series 1864 and he, again, played a villain. He's good at it.
Been waiting for this review! Nice premise here. Humans got a long way to go.
Insightful as always. Fantastic creative description about a film already felt I watched.
10 Cloverfield Lane was pretty good. Fortunately we all knew that there would be aliens involved so the bizarre ending wasn't too much of a shocker.
I love anything with Mary Elizabeth Winstead
That’s a real shame. This is one of only a few trailers I’ve seen recently where I was like “damn that actually looks awesome!”
“Don’t Breath” is definitely my favorite claustrophobic thriller. I had never seen a movie have that much tension and suspense
Yes when i saw it the WHOLE theater was so quiet in the basement scene.. like it was SILENT never experienced that before
Favorite claustrophobic movie? Favorite is hard but maybe the most interesting use of confined space: Fall (2022). It's a pretty good movie and its was kind of interesting that the characters were confined so tightly to such a small space yet they were literally in the open, able to see for miles in every direction.
This is a really fun movie that is great for those that don't try to outsmart everything and allow themselves to be entertained
Hey jeremy hope you're doing well can you please review The Holdovers
I wanna see that one too.
I want to recommend a movie I translated for work (I make subtitles for a living) called "Capsule", where Britain is secretly the first nation to put a man in space and other forces work against them. We spend almost an entire movie in the capsule with the astronaut, it's very claustrophobic and intense.
It was really good.
I'm looking forward to a part two.
Love the reviews as always!!!
Dead Calm (1989): Sam Neill, Nicole Kidman (her breakthrough role), and Billy Zane. Two yachts, one is sinking, and only one survivor from it climbs aboard the other. Great moments of tension on each boat in the middle of the ocean.
Ohh January, you never disappoint 🤣
Oh man I’m glad you clarified. I thought this was going to be a horror movie about In School Suspension.
It stands for Irrational Spook Story
Speaking of Alien Resurrection with Brad Dourif, there is a great Alien Resurrection fan edit that just came out called Alien Rebirth, Alien fans need to check this out!
So.... Nobody's gonna mention that this is just about the closest live action among us we're ever gonna get? I say that and I don't even play among us.
pretty much all of these movies are amongus.
Fav claustrophobic movies: Apollo 13, Deep Blue Sea, The Descent, & Panic Room.
Fav movies -
The Descent
REC
It would have been much better if Gerard Butler was on board.
THIS
IS
I.S.SPARTA!!!!
(kicks capitalist out of airlock)
Considering how super professional astronauts are, this premise has almost zero chance to happen. 😂
Crimson Tide is my pick, watching Gene Hackman and Denzel at it was gold!
Happy to see Pilou Asbæk get some international recognition, he was great in Borgen
Carpenter's The Thing is such a great claustrophobic movie
Event Horizon and Identity. liked both
My favorite claustrophobic film is "Day of the Dead" because it got everything you want on that genre esp. the villain character Capt. Rhodes, he makes The Governor and Negan from TWD looks like a saint.
Good. But the thing is the best
The best actor bait I’ve experienced was in Knives Out. Every time I was given a chance to trust Ransom’s motives, I took it. Because it was Chris Evans. That had to be intentional and was genius.
In keeping with the space theme, I really liked Life. But someone mentioned 10 Cloverfield Lane in the comments and that’s awesome too
The Descent comes to mind.
Yup
The Retreat with Jamie Bell Cillian Murphy and Thandy Newton is really good shut in film.
The descent! Easy pick for claustrophobic thriller
Another solid review. Same opinion.
I will say, I loved the scene with Chris Messina out in space. Actually, in any scene he was in, I enjoyed it.
Aside 'The Thing' my fave claistrophobic film was the German film 'Das Experiment' brilliant.
I actually like Cloverfield Lane better than Alien. I'm a huge Aliens fan and still think the second one holds up. Just found the first one a bit boring coming from the second. The actings better/more iconic in the second too.
Aside from Alien, the best claustrophobic horror movie is The Thing (1982)
The Descent is a great claustrophobic movie
Top 3 picks for best claustrophobic thriller in no particular order: As Above So Below... Life (2017)... The Decent
Brad Dourif is more than an Alien: Resurrection actor. He WAS Grima Wormtongue.
My favorite claustrophobic scene (I know you asked for movie) was Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey when they’re in hell being chased by that grandma
