- Harlech Castle is a Grade I listed medieval fortification built along the Welsh coast near to the Irish Sea. Built between 1282 & 1289, by Edward I during his invasion of Wales. It played a major part in several wars, before becoming the main residence and military headquarters for Owain Glyndŵr's uprising between 1404 & 1409, before being recaptured by the English.
Today, Harlech Castle still stands proud atop a rocky knoll, but with the sea now having receeded no longer commands the coast. Instead, there are spectacular views from 3 sides, out to sea, and towards the towering peaks of Snowdonia.
Despite being a ruin, substantial parts still remain, allowing you to climb to the top of the gatehouse tower, as well as an almost complete wall walk for those views.
